Oh My Goodness! What a Lot of Elbow Grease. I thought I was Crazy, you Win in a Good Way! You exemplify the old saying, "Where there's a Will there's a Way!" Great Job for a talented amateur!! That was a Lot of Work!!
It was a lot of work that’s for sure, but it was the only way I could update that ugly spot in my house for under $100. It really is the focal point. I have loved it so much that now I forget hope much elbow grease was required. I would have loved to just hire it done but that just wasn’t in the budget so I decided what I had was time and I could consider it my line a daily puzzle and workout all in one until I figured it out and loved the result. It was definitely worth it.
The paint sticks are a great idea. I’m working on this project now and I was about to buy baseboards for trim to hide the gaps. I like this idea better. Thanks!
No, I didn’t because I didn’t want to try to figure out how to put spindles back, so I just cut the carpet out all the way around the spindles. The carpet was stapled down so to pull it up I had to use pliers and a lot of muscle. It was definitely a workout for the day.
@@DIYIsMyHappyPlace thanks- turns out after I ripped up the first step, I found particle board used for the treads. Which I think won’t look good painted- so I guess I’m going to nix the project. 😩
Great job! I have a question. My house has runner on oak staircase, I am thinking of removing the runner and wonder if there’ll be a lot of holes left on the staircase. The runner was professionally installed 20 years ago. Thanks for your help.
It most likely will have holes but adding putty, sanding and other stain or paint will cover any imperfections you may find. As shown in my video I even filled in the larger holes along the edge by the wall with paint stirring sticks. Then I puttied and sanded them. I can’t see them at all now.
I've been putting down laminate flooring in my house and was dreading the stairs because of the spindles. Thanks for the video, I think we will stair or paint them once we rip up the terrible carpet.
I have had the carpet remnant on for over 2 years now and it has never frayed. It is an outdoor carpet that was in a roll and it is very durable. Thank you for the question!
I give the materials in the video, but you bring up a good point. I should share specifics in the description. I will try and get that added within the next 5 days. Thank you.
Mine does not have a landing area, but if it did, I would still risk it. I feel like a landing area even if it ends up being nothing but plywood, could be refinished, or painted to look like hardwood. My steps were made of a very rough hardwood. I sanded and them and added wood putty to the holes until they were smooth. Then I stained right over it. Good luck!
@@johnmiller9219 It might be worth getting wood planks for that section rather than trying to work the concrete into looking like wood. Or you could go with a new look and simply paint the concrete to blend in and embrace the concrete/stucco as a new design element. At least until you are ready to take it on. I think painted concrete can be fabulous. I will say that whenever I have a surprise during my DIY projects, which happens often, I know I create extra work for myself, but I keep telling myself it's worth it in the end. Many times I have tried new ways to do things over and over until I am satisfied with the results. A square peg into a round hole seems to be a common occurrence. I look at what I have, study it out, and try to figure out how I can make it work. Good Luck!
Reworking or trying to rework poor workmanship is quite a challenge. I would've done it differently but that's me. I think with what you had to work with and not wanting to get yourself hundreds of dollars in debt, you did a pretty good job. I think it looks MUCH better than before.

It looks good to me I don't see what everyone else is complaining about it's a DIY project.
I appreciate it! Thank you!

Fantastic! Good luck!
Wow great job!!👏
Very nice job on staying under the budget. That's always nice!
Thank you so much Jose! We are still enjoying them!
How did you get the carpet out from under the spindles? Did you take the spindles off?

@@kittyho5727 you too! Good luck!
I think it's a huge improvement, especially for an economical way of updating a staircase! Great job!
Thank you so much. We sure enjoy it.
how long it took you to finish this? from ripping the carpet up to last?
I worked on it on and off for a week.
I've been putting down laminate flooring in my house and was dreading the stairs because of the spindles. Thanks for the video, I think we will stair or paint them once we rip up the terrible carpet.
KR good luck! It was quite a bit of work, but it’s so inexpensive! It’s worth the effort.
Im at the same dilemma, how will you transition heigh difference between stair threads and laminate upstairs.
Thank you! You are so inspirational .
Your Welcome!
So glad I saw this
Thank you!
This is the exact same staircase design in my house. I was thinking of ripping my carpet up in the next couple months.
I definitely had to do a lot of sanding to even out the wood underneath, so make sure you have a good sander, but it’s so worth it! Good luck! 😊
Amazing! How did you handle the carpet at the last step up top? I assume your floor on 2nd level is carpeted? Did you use some sort of a divider?
I just tucked the carpet under the floor on the top step and stapled it there. It’s a smooth transition.
Love this so much ❤️🔥😯😍😍🥰I need help with mine got big gaps🥺🥺🥺
Thank you so much Metteo! I'm sure it will turn out great!!
Great video! Did you do this all by yourself? How long did it take?
I did do it all by myself. It took a couple weeks because I was making it up as I went along, plus it was just a side gig, but it sure was worth it.
Wow. Great job! Only negative comments are from out of work contractors, I’m sure.
You are so kind!
Kona is my favorite too!
I love it. It's so rich and dark, but not black. Thanks for watching!
Did yiu remove the nails from the stairs? I am affrais if I remove them the stairs will come off. I guess I could cover them with putty.
No I didn’t have any nails sticking out. I removed the staples that held the carpet down.
nice job!
Thank you so much!
Great Job and THANKS FOR THE TIPS!!!!
Good luck!
Looks good ❤️
Thank you!
With the carpet remnant don't you have to worry about it fraying at the edges? What did you do to prevent that?
I have had the carpet remnant on for over 2 years now and it has never frayed. It is an outdoor carpet that was in a roll and it is very durable. Thank you for the question!
That looks real good. You are so crafty and resourceful!
Thank you so much!
Here in Omaha watching, also my first apt. At 19 years old was in Papillion
holylambmedia omg I’m from Omaha me too!
That's awesome! We are neighbors!
holylambmedia love it!
what materials did you use

Kona looks black but when I google it, it’s more like a brown. See your steps black or dark brown?
They are actually dark brown.
what to do with the landing area? my landing has carpet, have no idea whats under it

@@DIYIsMyHappyPlace thanks. pulled up the carpet on my landing appears to be raw concrete or stucco. gonna be a massive job
