Well I did it. I got the shield plus. Then I won a cheap auction on a max-9. Took both to range. I ended up keeping the Ruger and selling off the shield. First time I fired the shield plus, I was pretty impressed. I never cared much for shields. But I liked the groupings and feel of the max-9 better. That takedown pin is nothing really, didn't like that about the Ruger. But it was simple to takedown.

I don’t run optics on my pistols, but it is all the rage now and it’s nice to see manufacturers produce what the market wants.
The Ruger Max9 is a fine little pistol, imo. I know they’re not really considered as “professional” grade manufacturer, but I’d put a Ruger up against anything. I don’t see this as a budge gun at all!
If someone doesn’t want to spend professional grade prices and wants to buy a solid gun made by a company that actually stands behind its products, Ruger is for you.

I’ve been a Shield owner for many years but but the bullet when the P365 hit the market for capacity. I’ve never shot it as well as the Shield but did ok. I bought a Plus the day after it was released, took it to the range with my wife and ran about 300 rounds. She liked it so much we bought a second one for her and ran 300 through it. Love it, the Plus is a winner! I’ve owned a Ruger LC9S and didn’t keep it very long so I doubt the Max 9 will be a consideration for me now. I started carrying the Shield Plus immediately with the P365 getting cased. Some say S&W is late but since it fits all holsters and aftermarket parts, it’s a no brainer for me. It costs a little more but look at the savings for current Shield owners who don’t have to buy new holsters, lights, etc.

Do enjoy your willingness to acknowledge your own bias/body mechanics, something a lot of shooting channels seem incapable of. Your Wife's input is also great as it gives that wider info pool to judge from.
One other feature I do like on the Max9 is the rear sight shelf allows one handed slide manipulation, if needed. An added dislike is the need for a punch for disassembly, though in fairness the need to tear down your pistol in the field, for a civilian? Kind of moot, but still wish it didn't need one. But hey, I got biases, too.

Thanks for your review. Enjoyed the video. I would like to extol the virtues of Ruger’s Customer Service. I can’t speak for Springfield or Sig but I’ve had excellent customer service and response from Ruger. Which begs the question in a perfect world you shouldn’t need customer service at all. But I had a non-repairable issue with my original LCP Custom and had had the gun for several years. I sent the gun into Ruger for inspection and repair and they could not repair it. Not only did they replace the gun but rebuilt the Custom which wasn’t being made anymore. Sorry for the commercial but they were that good. Thanks.

I've had a Max 9 Pro for a few months now with a few hundred rounds through it, great reliable little pistol. Mine came without the thumb safety, I prefer that if I conceal carry. The front sight is fiber optic and tritium. The rear sight is blacked out but has a recessed U milled into it, just fill it in with white or high vis paint it will make lining up the sights a breeze.

I.. LOVED... everything about the Max-9... EXCEPT the trigger. Of all the 4 or 5 micro 9s out there it fit MY hand the best including the P365 and I am a Sig guy. I didn't like the long take up of the Max-9 but what REALLY bugged me was the almost 2mm sideways slop both to the left and right of the trigger. I solved ALL my trigger issues by installing the Maxxis Short Stroke Trigger from Galloway Precision. It has a wide, flat face. The take up virtually disappeared and the wall, break and reset are awesome. This simple to do $36 upgrade has turned the Max-9 into my EDC.

I just bought this gun this past weekend as my first concealed carry gun and basically my first gun ever. I paid $500 for it at a gun show, with online retailers showing $560. I have only had a chance to put about 30 rounds through it and I don't have very much experience shooting guns, but from what I could tell, I like it. I'm a pretty big guy but I think staring out with something smaller while I figure out how I want to carry is good and I will upgrade as I go. It's good to see someone with more experience than me give their opinion on it.

I had a Shield 2.0 but have long since gave it to my girlfriend after getting my P365 and never looked back. The Shield was definitely better than the LC9, PF9 and ~ = with micro 1911type guns e.g. 911, P938 etc. But nowI think the Plus maybe too little too late and won't make that huge of a splash, especially with more capacity now for the G43X/G48 pistols.

    • @JacksonWalter735
      @JacksonWalter735 3 года назад +6

While I prefer the Shield Plus overall, I think it just depends on what you're looking for. You can't beat the features and value that the Max-9 have compared to the more expensive Shield. The Max-9 is noticeably smaller than the Shield Plus with their 10 round flush fit mag (the extended mag on the Max-9is around the size of the flush fit mag on the Shield Plus) which is great for conceal carry. You also have better sights and an optics ready pistol.
The Shield Plus is great if you're looking for a better trigger. The Ruger LC9 had the best stock trigger out of all the tiny guns, but that has been overtaken by far with the trigger on the Shield Plus. The break and reset are just unmatched. The larger size could be great for those who want a bigger grip too. I know many people who think the P365 and Hellcat are great for conceal carry, but they're too small to shoot/hold comfortably. The Shield Plus has about the same length grip as the P365XL that gives it more room for your hands to grip while still being small to conceal carry overall compared to larger guns. It's also compatible with many Shield accessories and we know how popular the Shield is.

This looks much like a smaller Security 9, which in my opinion is a fantastic small 9mm. Fits normal size hands well, has a great smooth trigger with a nice break. The compact model has 12 rd and 15 rd magazines and is only about 1.2” wide. It shoots with very limited recoil and is easily concealable with the right holster. Yet only costs around $325. I’m also thinking of picked this one up too. I have the LC9S and shoot it extremely well and don’t find recoil to be an issue at all so I’m looking to sell or trade the LC9S to pick up the Max 9. I also have small hands so I think that is a factor and likely why your wife shot it pretty well.

I prefer the Hellcat (most capacity in smallest form factor out of all the microcompact 9mms), but the Max-9 sounds like a winner to me. It's the most affordable one, still tiny for conceal carry, comes optics ready, has a great trigger for conceal carry (haven't shot the Max-9 with ammo yet but I dried fired it many times when I saw it at my local Scheel's), and I love the fiber optic sights.
The only downside would be the tool takedown (same with the LC9 series), but that's not really an issue because most people only disassemble their guns at home to clean.

I have pretty big hands, the shop I work at has a few so I picked up one. I've shot all the others. My personal opinion this one is my top micro compact 9. Then the shield plus, 365xl, then the Hellcat, which is my least favorite. Just my opinion, they're all good firearms.

@@runningbear6391 Too cheap to buy one? Aside from the P365, it's less than a $50 difference between the Max-9, Hellcat, and Shield Plys (Jacksonville, FL area). Ruger has some crappy guns (Ruger Security 9 in my opinion), but the predecessor to the Max-9 (LC9, LC9S, EC9) are great and reliable. Even the crappy first Gen LC9 with the terrible double action trigger still functions today. I haven't heard many stories about those single stack Rugers catastrophically failing or being too cheap and breaking down since they purchase them.

I thought I was gonna hate this gun when I first got it because of the trigger. I really like the grip and the fiber optic sight though. And it shot great for me out to around 30-40 yards. The trigger to me wasn’t as bad as it seemed it was gonna be once I was shooting it. I have heard the Galloway trigger is the way to go. With a better trigger will be a great gun especially for the money got it around 330 transfer and all. You can’t beat that. Hoping to see a review on the cz p10m soon!

Have shot all 4 of the micro compacts. I view them as “get off me” guns as opposed to target guns. Of the 4, this is the only one where my natural grip doesn’t cause failure to lock open on the last round. Also allows for a full grip with pinky extension while still being very concealable. I’m sure I’ll end up with all 4 of them in my collection but the max 9 is my first.

Have to agree on his assessment of Ruger pistols. The triggers generally aren't great. They contain sharp edges on the slide and controls and they generally don't shoot as well as other guns that might be slightly more in price. BUT THEY ALSO ARE GENERALLY VERY DEPENDABLE. For less money one can buy a Taurus G2 and it's likely as dependable with a better trigger. The optics ready thing? Personally I could take it or leave it for a CCW. Basics carry the day.

I also especially like how you dont talk down about safeties. You can either like it or not and then train. I like either Da/sa guns or a striker with a safety. Most other gun tubers like to remind everyone over and over they dont like safeties in an attempt i feel is to persuade you to not buy pistols with safeties. Now if they review one with a safety, tell me how it works and its design and i dont need to hear wvery time how they dont carry with a safety. So you are my go to guy

First off, I like Ruger and have several Rugers in my collection. When Ruger and S&W recently released their versions of micro double stack 9mm's with the Max9 and Shield Plus, my eyebrows raised. I could see in photos on Rugers website that the Max9 frame was modeled after their Security 9, not a deal breaker, but the ergo's of the Security 9 are nothing to get excited about. Even though I've carried a Ruger LC9S for over 3 years, (I chose it over the original Shield mainly because I liked the trigger better) I almost instantly found myself leaning toward the Shield Plus. Better ergo's, finally a better trigger and 1 more round in the mag. That was enough to finally sway me to the Shield...albeit the 2nd evolution of the original. I have yet to shoot my Shield Plus, but can already tell it's just a bit better than the current competition. Great review as always.

I added a hogue grip and used a toothpick to put white acrylic paint into the square notch on the rear sight. I shot best with it compared to my hellcat, LCP MAX, and S&W 380EZ. I have smaller hands so it fits perfectly, especially after adding the hogue grip. I really like the trigger on it, there’s less of a “wall” and has more of a semi-firm take up, which helps keep me on target. I was just at the range today with all these pistols and the Ruger MAX9 was the most accurate.

Ruger may not be Glock, S&W, or Sig, but they are good at what they do. I have not had any bad experiences with them on a functional level.(everyojne makes mistakes, and there are known issues with some product from any given mass production manufacturer) i tend to go to the "bang for buck" option in most cases and i think that the Max-9 is that for a reliable EDC, if the grip suits, which to me it does.
