  • In this episode, we finally begin the long-awaited construction of Orlaith’s new utility room and downstairs bathroom, and let’s just say things don’t go exactly to plan! We accidentally bust a water pipe, creating what can only be described as an indoor paddling pool! Later, our kids manage to burst another pipe-this renovation has turned into quite the adventure!
    We also hit a few roadblocks with a stud wall’s position and turn to Orlaith’s brother, Cian, for advice and he joins us via video call while on a treadmill! After a good laugh and some clever suggestions, we’re back on track!
    In between construction mishaps, we move some lambs that have shown great improvement after a mineral drench, set out mineral lick buckets for the sheep pre-mating to help with fertility, and catch up with Robbie as he prepares firewood for winter.
    Join us for all the laughs, hard work, and unpredictable twists as we tackle this renovation project head-on!
    Thanks for watching, see you next time!

    You could put a bit of a storage cuboard under those stairs with a couple of half length doors through where your new partition wall meets the stairs. Wouldn’t be a huge job to frame it into your partition wall for a handy man such as yourself David. Anyhow, thanks for the videos always enjoy watching them 👍

    You will always get extra points for creativity. You are a good lad David. Tell Orlaith that anyone with children and a farmer understands that things will be lived-in. Add in some construction, and it is impossible to have a tidy home. Hope the redo goes quickly. ❤

    It’s so lovely to see Orliath laughing. It must be very hard to be the wife of a sheep farmer! Please tell her these are the best years of your lives, when your children are young. Put a built in cupboard under the stairs from the new bathroom using the space for 2 or 3 big drawers or hide the cistern behind the wall.

    I used to have free access powered minerals in a five gallon drum with a sheep’s head sized hole in the side which I hung on the fence at all times. Animals know what they need if they can get at it. Well demonstrated in wild animals seeking out their requirements. The buckets are also full of energy, no doubt welcome this time of the year.
    I hope you haven’t bitten off more with the alterations. Would a bathroom have fitted in the utility area? It would have made for a much easier job. It seems a shame to mess with the play room, the floor looked lovely.I was thinking, will it be difficult putting in a ventilation fan?

    Put a shower in the downstairs bathroom David - when those three kids become teenagers you will thank yourself for it - you have no idea how long they spend in the bathroom in the morning until you have teenagers and the fighting over bathroom space - this is from experience - even a 900 x 900 corner shower

    I know Kiwi Farmer (NZ youtuber) had empty cows and a sterile bull in 2023 - also white muscle in some calves born which means they don't survive and the sterile bull means non breed cows (selenium deficiency) - a disaster really - he had the vet out to do a blood test on the bull and a sperm test - selenium, Zinc and other minerals really low with no swimmer in the sperm - Vet gave the bull a mineral shot and free choice minerals and in 4 month the bull was back to 90% sperm count - those farmers need to get their cows tested for minerals even 1/2 a dozen to see what they are working with - empty cows is a empty wallet - beef or dairy it is the same result

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  3 месяца назад +1

      I was chatting to a few dairy men and copper & selenium deficiencies seems to be the main problem. Really should blood test more problem sheep. My vet was telling me he has pooled some blood samples for testing in problem flocks, pretty efficient way of getting an overall picture.

    • @TifJones-p8s
      @TifJones-p8s 3 месяца назад

      @@sheepschool365 for NZ it is Zinc not copper - sits side by side on the periodic table and if one is very high the other is very low - I think the more mineral blood tests you do - foot rot, fly strike - are they part of the mineral def as well? No one will know until they are tested and flaged as having that problem - maybe you need to learn to draw blood David - with the aid of your head holder test fly strike sheep and foot rot sheep yourself and sent the sample off - also make great content for farmer around the world

    Have you done much soil testing lately? Our country can be a bit the same with the minerals, but it seems to be worse when the soil is out of balance and nutrients and minerals are getting locked up. May be worth a look in the home block and your ma’s, see if you can find a difference? Don’t stress about the toy mess, we only got twin lads 4y and it’s a bomb site as soon as they get at a room 🤣🤣🤣

    Blood test a few ewes in poorest condition. I did a few years ago, it was a good move. Found out what deficiencies I had and treated accordingly. I'm wary of lick buckets for several reasons.

    • @sheepschool365

    Why dont you have loose mineral and salt blocks out like we do in Canada?

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  3 месяца назад

      We have three options here. Mineral drench, a bolus or lick buckets. Loose minerals are pretty uncommon for sheep here..

    • @Dennismelnychuk
      @Dennismelnychuk 3 месяца назад

      @@sheepschool365 we also have lick tubs, but minerals we purchase in 50 and 2000 pound bags, same with iodized cobalt salt its available in 50 and 2000 pound bags along with 40 pound blocks which is by far the most popular. I'm sure your feed companies have loose minerals and salt that they add into the feed and pellets. During the winter when it's frozen solid out and the livestock are on feed we use a dosatron and put liquid vitamins and minerals into the water for all species of livestock.
