- biography of Gordon lightfoot
Gordon Lightfoot's musical career began at a young age. Growing up in Orillia, Ontario, he learned to play piano and drums before picking up the guitar at the age of ten. His parents were both musically inclined, and his mother was a choir director and pianist. His interest in music led him to perform at local events and eventually to form a band, The Two Tones, with his friend, Terry Whelan.
In 1958, Lightfoot moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music, but he struggled to find success in the competitive music scene. He returned to Canada and settled in Toronto, where he began to make a name for himself in the city's burgeoning folk scene. He was soon signed to United Artists Records and released his first album, "Lightfoot!", in 1964.
The album featured the hit single "Early Morning Rain," which quickly became a classic and has since been covered by countless artists. Lightfoot's distinctive voice and intricate guitar work caught the attention of music fans and critics alike, and he soon became one of Canada's most popular folk singers.
Over the next few years, Lightfoot continued to release successful albums, including "The Way I Feel" (1967), "Did She Mention My Name?" (1968), and "Sit Down Young Stranger" (1970). His songs often dealt with themes of love, loss, and nature, and his poetic lyrics and haunting melodies captured the hearts of listeners around the world.
In the 1970s, Lightfoot's popularity continued to soar. His albums "Don Quixote" (1972), "Sundown" (1974), and "Summertime Dream" (1976) all received critical acclaim and were commercial successes. He also became known for his powerful live performances, and his concerts drew crowds of devoted fans.
In 1976, Lightfoot suffered a near-fatal illness when an abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptured. He underwent multiple surgeries and spent several months in the hospital, but he eventually made a full recovery and returned to music. He continued to tour and record throughout the 1980s and 1990s, releasing albums like "Salute" (1983), "East of Midnight" (1986), and "A Painter Passing Through" (1998).
Throughout his career, Lightfoot has received numerous awards and accolades. He has been nominated for 16 Juno Awards, Canada's top music award, and has won six times. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 SOCAN Awards.
Lightfoot's impact on Canadian music and culture is immeasurable. His songs have become part of the national consciousness, and his voice and guitar work have inspired countless musicians. He is often referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and is considered a national treasure in his home country.
Despite health issues and a slowing of his touring schedule in recent years, Lightfoot continues to perform and record. He remains an active presence in the music world and a beloved figure to his legions of fans.

Gordo deserves better than this AI bot commentary. He was a human being and a great craftsman in the art of song writing and performing. Give him the send off he deserves-with a human being telling his story.
Never fear Larry, tons of well deserved accolades & human based Tributes are pouring in for Gordon Lightfoot now.
I enjoyed Rick Beatos lengthy piece on Gordon.
His music was magic, truly a gift from GOD Almighty.
Gordon, RIP in Jesus name !
A terribly produced piece of electronic merde full of incorrect data and the usual abominable mispronounciations. Fortunately, our dear departed friend would not take offense at any of it. He'd simply smile and enthrall us all with another soul-stirring song. A vocal embodiment of ALL things that can be felt. THAT is who he was, is, and ALWAYS will be. 💔🙏🌈🇨🇦👑
@@psalm2forliberty577 You are correct, sir! And I know that. We’re all rowing the same boat, and Rick Beato’s piece was terrific.
I agree
Yes.
No one lives forever, but it still hurts to see him go!! Rest In Peace!!! Many songs and many years of great music!! Thank you so much for sharing that with the world
😭💔🕊️❤️☘️🌌
I couldn't have said it better myself. Such awesome music & it will still live on!
Jesus Christ the sovereign God loves you my friends I hope you can personally get to know the Holy Trinity, God miraculously healed me of my chronic breathing issues that plagued me for years on a near nightly basis if not every single night

God did this healing instantaneously within a group anointed prayer over my health, doing what nothing else would for years
So sad :(
Very sad news totally agree with you this one hurts
Disgusting clickbait for the purpose of exploiting the deep sadness and pain we Lightfoot fans are experiencing at this moment. RIP, Mr. Lightfoot. Your legend will live on forever.
The prononcing of some of the names is ridiculas
no kidding and that stupid music too
Yes😔👍👋👋
"Clickbait" is right. I couldn't believe the title and so I had to look. This is a cheap and disrespectful way to get views.
This is such a travesty.
😢R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot - your songs have enriched every soul who's heard them.
They truly have. His music has enriched my soul.
@@alittlewheiser521 Yes , even a young boy from south central Los Angeles, I play guitar today because of Mr Lightfoot and his great music.
@@rodterrell304 that’s awesome. Can you play a lot of his songs?
They honestly have. Seven Island suite changed my life. All of his songs had not just a beaty but also a truth to them
The backing track to this video KILLS the tribute to one of the best singer/songwriters ever. A true LEGEND ❤
... and the surname pronunciation is a little out of place too.
Not to mention the AI voice and the references at the end of the video which suggest Gordon is still alive and touring.
Gordon Lightfoot was a true Canadian who loved his country.
He stayed in the land he loved.
His songs are musical masterpieces; his voice was amazing.
He’ll live on forever through his music.
He will always live on in our hearts
One of the great voices of my youth. Rest well, Mr. Lightfoot! 😢
Amen!
I want to know who he pissed off. I say this because I didn't hear of his death until tonight. I was on line when I found out. The fact that his death was not covered makes me love him even more.
He wrote and sang beautiful songs and I am sorry to hear of his death. He was a gem.
I agree. He was great in concert and he made a funny comment by saying now I'm the great rotund one.
Part of that Canadian quality infusion that raised the musical game of the late 60's alongside Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.ruclips.net/video/zeaO5UZ5OcI/видео.html&pp=ygUeY295b3RlIGpvbmkgbWl0Y2hlbGwgYm9iIGR5bGFu

An iconic legend
I remember SUNDOWN was hot when I was in college. Since I was too poor to buy his album and there was no Internet back then, several of us tried to catch his lyrics on paper when the song would come on the radio. Among about five of us, we got all the song lyrics. It’s amazing how proud we were!! I’ll never forget Mr.Lightfoot!!
Sweet! That was a tear jerker!
Great story ,love it!!!
A legend lost. His music made you feel and his musicianship enthralled. There will only be one Gordon Lightfoot. RIP.
One of the best story-teller song-writers ever! Rich, layered and textured music. Didnt like his curly permed hair era but his music was always solid. His sense of humor came through more and more as he aged. Legend.
It saddens me that we lost such a music icon. I have great memories as a child listening to his music. You will be greatly missed Gordon.....We love you ❤

@R.R. absolutely! What a legend and I will play his music forward 🙌
absolutely ... Eternal Blessings Gord !!!
I'm saddened as well. I love his songs and his talent. What a great performer mych better than the junk kids listen to today and at least his songs tell a story
First saw Gordon at an outdoor venue in DC in the mid sixties as a teen. Quickly fell in love with his music and he became my favorite artist. Helped me through many different experiences. He was a thoughtful poet who added tranquility in difficult times and was a soothing presence. God rest your soul and thank you for sharing yourself with us. ❤️
Took a drive down an old country road this morning and listened to "If you could read my mind". rest well Gordon.
The soundtrack of my youth. RIP Gordon.
Yes. Ditto
Induct Gordon Lightfoot posthumously into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!!
The nostalgia that his songs still brings to me. His lyrics were magical. My young years were filled with his wonderful works. R.I.P. Gordon. "Hear the mighty engines roar, see the silver wing on high.
She's away and westward bound, far above the clouds she'll fly...."
There the morning rain don't fall and the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home in about three hours time
Rest now. Your work is done. 😞
Thank you, Mr. Lightfoot for creating memories that will last forever in our hearts. May you rest in peace and love surrounding you forever.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
May God's live always surround you and now you are enfolded with love in God's arms meeting him face to face with God smiling down on him with love, dignity and grace.
I can't believe someone would actually use the death of Gordon Lightfoot for clickbait.
I'm 67. Loved him and his music immensely. ❤ what a great songwriter.
I’m so grateful I had the chance to see him in concert at the Hollywood Bowl 1974. Just after the release of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot album ‘Don Quixote’was released. He will remain my very favorite singer/poet/philosopher. A true troubadour. I will hold him in my heart and memory til my passing. His songs brought me much comfort and joy. Farewell to a Canadian National Treasure and ,good honest man.
I absolutely agree with you, Gordon Lightfoot was a legend, poet, and knew how to tell a story with lyrics & music tied together. Thank you for your heartfelt comment. 💔☄🌠🕯🎖🏆 ⚘⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🇨🇦
And in a blaze of tangled hooves he gallops off across the dusty plains in vain to search again. What a poet songwriter.
Seeing Gordon go brings me to tears. He was such a great singer with a great voice, and he made every song feel so emotionally full. Rest in peace.
This man's music had a great impact on me. Thank you Gordon.
I hardly have any good memories of my Dad. He wasn't a good man. However, his taste in music was. He loved Gordon, and because he did, I do. Thank you for the music sir. RIP. ❤
You will live in the hearts of your fans forever. Your music will never die.
False headline. This video wasn't three hours before his death
You sang about you. You sang about me. Those who listened to you were pleasured into listening to ourselves through your thoughtful lyrics and the ways you had of penning them for not only yourself, but for all of us. Rest now, and leave the listening to us.
We people of the great lakes region have lost a great friend. Is Gordon did the Relatives of the crew the edmond fitzgerald a great honor. We should now honor gordon lightfoot. Rest in peace gordon you deserve it
Man left a mark, helped to lessen the load for lots of folk, for decades. Thank you, and RIP,my friend.
RIP BEAUTIFUL Songwriter, singer and Canadian! xxx Thank you for your gorgeous music! xx
We all know that we will die one day, but the death of this Canadian friend hits me so hard... I always loved his music and my favorites are of course; "If you could read my mind love" and many more. I bought his vinyl album in the 70's and later I changed those beauties on CD.. RIP my friend, you left us many good memories with your music. ❤ from the Netherlands.

It hit me hard too. Love his songs.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald always had a special place in my heart..As a kid I use to see the Edmund come down the Detroit River and his storytelling song always breaks my heart thinking about what them 29 went through..
Loved his music so much, great memories they still bring.
WHERE'S THE "LAST VIDEO??" This is nothing more than cheap click bait bullshit.
Gordon Lightfoot was a very down to earth person, met him way back in the '70's at "Tanglewood" in Lenox, Massachusetts during a concert there. A very friendly man, with a great sense of humor.
RIP Gordon. Thank you for a lifetime of music
Every song he crafted was a timeless gift to us and to future generations.
RIP to an amazing man !!!
One of my all time favorite singer/songwriters ever. All his songs are amazingly crafted. A real talent.
so you click bait his "last video" then show barely anything of it wtf, click bait crap.
Awesome singer... were gonna miss him but his music will live on.
There isn't a song better written that captures a mans feeling of frustration, anguish, and loss trying to cope with losing the women he truly loved !
"If You Could Read My Mind"
Great classic song lyrically, instrumentally, and of course vocally by the HOF artist Gordon Lightfoot ! I'm so glad I got to take my wife to see you in concert several years ago ! Thanks for your great songs that we will continue to enjoy ! RIP & God Bless !!
So many of us have been touched by Gordon's music. Wow, to have his music in our lives for all these years...what a celebration!!
RIP dear Gordon.
Condolences to his family. RIP Gordon Lightfoot one of the greatest singer song writers. Thank you for blessing us with those beautiful songs and that unique voice
From a time when the music was just pure and innocent.. the music today no longer evokes that same feeling but your
music Mr.Lightfoot will resonate in the hearts of every Canadian from the shores of Newfoundland to the mountaintops of British Colombia. For all of us who had the pleasure of listening to your music, we thank you!!!Gordon Lightfoot, Stompin Tom and Gord Downey are what Canadian legends are made of and we are forever grateful for their legacy that they left behind🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
It's just my opinion, but I think music was not pure and innocent even back then. I think every generation has people who make claims like this. Besides, music written by naive and innocent people tends to suck. Lightfoot wrote with honest introspection and his semi-autobiographical characters would explicitly or implicitly expose their own sins, not innocence.
Sad day. Sundown finally came for one of the greats. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot.
disrespectful title
I've gotten old, but his music never does. Listening to him brings home the beauty of Canada, and a rich history of a strong noble people. You need not be from Canada when listening to the Railroad Trilogy and perhaps feel a lump in your throat or shed a small tear. Well done Lightfoot! You succeeded. You served your country and fellow man to the end!
he was the best folklore singer of all time. through his stories, you could see the world.
RIP Gordon.
Been a fan for many years.
A good innings at 84, but it’s still a shock.
Who the Hell is the commentator on this. He butchered so many pronunciations that makes the whole bio so plastic. Sorry Gordy. You deserved better. RIP.
RIP Mr Lightfoot 😢 Thank you, you've given me so much through your music. Much Love from 🇺🇲 Your hometown (Orillia, Ontario) and my hometown (Auburn, New York) had 🇨🇦CANUS🇺🇲 Games for 20yrs. We switched cities every year for one weekend each Summer, where all kids in every sport would compete , parades, games, staying in Canadian homes, and hosting in American one's. For as long as I've loved Gordon Lightfoot, I didn't know until this video, that he was from the hometown that I (and Auburnian's) hold fond memories of
A true legend, a great singer and songwriter, and songs that will always touch our hearts everywhere! Thank you, Mr. Lightfoot, for all you have done!

I spent many hours listening to Gord’s Gold back in my college days in the 70’s. His songs were poetry set to music, telling stories and expressing emotions that anyone can relate to. My life was enriched by his music and I will miss him. RIP.
Love his stories and music. He's on that long carefree highway now.

The passing of a Brother. Farewell brave and noble Knight. You brought us your chalice filled with light. Honest courage til the end. Our Brother in life; your passing, as true Friend. RIP Sir Gordon Lightfoot.
Oh dear AI is really losing the human aspect, I pity you people liking this, this is an AI biography
He was a great poet and a musical troubadour. He touched lives through many generations and will continue to. His poetry and music will remain in our hearts for a very long time. Thank you Gordon Lightfoot.
The Legend lives on...
I was so saddened to hear that Gordy passed away. He was sometimes called Canada’s poet laureate. I really have enjoyed his music over the years, and he will be missed! Rest in peace, Gordy!
The greatest folk singer of all time.
What an Iconic inspiration you were sir. May your storytelling lyrics and melodies continue on. Godspeed Mr. Gordon Lightfoot
So horrible …..what a career may he rest in piece
Terrible AI or bot video! Stock video and computer voice. Do better!
OMG Again another legend 😢
Saw him in concert only one time, but that was unforgettable. He and one other guitarist sat on stools onstage and played song after song, interspersed with the briefest of banter - between themselves or with the audience - for almost 2 hours, and then they were done. It was more like sitting in the back yard or the living room than a “concert.” It was just sweet music, smartly crafted lyrics, and a musician comfortable and sure of himself and his product.
He was one of my influences when I started playing in the early 70s. Amazing writer/composer that will be sadly missed.
I'm so grateful to have been around when his music was born. His music is timeless, and his stories will continue to find new ears.
RIP Gordon, you were one of a kind.
My favorite Shakespearean/ modern day songwriter, artist. I've been playing his songs on my guitar, singing since the 60s, "never" growing tired of his immense body of work. Not hearing Gordon perform in person has not diminished my love for Gordon, as his video performances will live on for me, at 74, I will continue enjoying his legacy with my guitar, singing as best I can. Thank you Gordon ❤
Magnificent singer songwriter. I am so sorry to hear the news of Gordon's death. All his songs are evergreen. I love them all........ RIP you gentleman. Your memory will never go away.
Song for a winters Night was a beautiful winter song,RIP GORDON YOU WILL BE MISSED
The man was a master communicator, great songwriter, and a wonderful musician and producer. RIP fellow Canadian.
Deepest condolences to his family and friends
There's an old saying that if even one person thinks about you, you're not really gone. His music will long on for a very long time if not forever.
Many of us guitar players hold Gordon up as one of the best composers for guitar ever. Such an amazingly authentic emotional expression of human experience through his guitar playing. And marched with his poetic lyrics and superb voice. RIP Mr. Lightfoot.
RIP to Gordon Lightfoot one of the greatest songwriters ever! Thank you for the 6 plus decades of great songs, feelings, and memories. See you on the Carefree Highway. ❤
Please delve into his massive catalog - he was so prolific, natural and legendary. RIP Gordon, you were one of the best. 💔
If I remember correctly, as a kid in FL - Lightfoot was the first performer to sell out the Tupperware Auditorium in Orlando... as an 'Unknown!'😆 People of all ages loved, & continue to love his material. What a treasure! R.I.P. Gordon.
Rest In Peace Gord. You were certainly One of the Greats!
