Fun fact: You may notice that Daggoth is triggered to tell you to build a spawning pool once you hit 150 minerals. That's because in an earlier version of SC before patches, the pool used to cost 150 instead of 200 (imagine the Zerg rushes then!). In SC2 the game utilizes a different "mod" for the campaign, so that any patches they do won't effect it, but back in SC1, when they patched it for multiplayer, it would effectively change the campaign as well.
The Zerg scared me so much as a kid. I literally had nightmares about them. There's an upcoming cut-scene of a group of Terrans on a science vessel that has been infested by the Zerg. It was literally the stuff of nightmares when I was a 9 year old playing this for the first time.
It really annoys me that SCII has lost so much of the style SCI had. The zerg WERE terrifying, they were disgusting and dark and vicious. Now they're cute. They look like puppies. SCII was a huge downgrade in terms of style and identity from the first game. The art, the sound, the story, none of it match the original.
The reason that there's so little tutorial in the Zerg campaign is that at this point they expect that you have already finished the Terran campaign and that you have the basics of the game down so they throw you into the deep end. I must say I quite enjoyed that.
And then the Protoss campaign is the very definition of learning how to run and assuming you know how to walk. They assume you've got two campaigns under your belt and understand fully how the game works.
Just remember, us old timers that started out with sc1, building multiple hatcheries at the main was a must. That was the only way to increase drone production. I am enjoying you playing. Please don't forget defensive structures. It does help out in campaign setting.
It's possible to beat this mission with just the over-powered hydralisks daggoth gifts you, so long as you can micro them effectively. Another thing to keep in mind is that the strong version of your units, like the hunter killer (or devouring one for zerglings) start out with all the upgrades excluding the damage and armor upgrades.
Yes, im sure its easier in remastered because those first cannons lowko killed didnt get rebuilt like they would in sc1 but yes ive done it, it took me an hour but its possible, Hunterkillers are insane they are basically hydras on crack XD
Fun fact: Zasz will tell you to morph into spawning pool at 150 minerals, because it costed so before. Should I say that it wasn't a smart idea for multiplayer to have it at 150?
It was actually Daggoth who instructed you - the one with the blue background. Granted, a couple of times in the campaign (notably Zerg 2 when you rescue the Hunter Killers, and at one point in Zerg 10), Daggoth has the wrong portrait.
That sounds stupid since Tassadar is also a hero. Also that sounds stupid. Also, also, as much as i would love seeing him, i think its gonna be impossible. I would be happy to just have him as a SC2 announcer
Not just that. Creating an in-game tutorial with flashing unit, in-game hints and screen overlays required a serious development effort. Creating Starcraft 1 was by itself a great challenge to the team, as it was build on top of the Warcraft II engine, that used top-down view of the map, but SC utilizes isometric view. The latter was the cause for various pathing issues for the ground units in the game, Dragoons being the ones to still suffer from that. Having said that, I guess it was not affordable to invest in more-interactive experience in the tutorials. I love how things turned in SC2 in those regards though.
ahhh the instructuion manual! it had all the lore packed into it and all the artwork inside! still too this day i write "your ass here" with a target or arrow on the toe of my work boots jus like the marines taught me too hehe. nastalgia for a manual. i read that thing front to back many many times as a kid
Lowko. You keep complaining about gas distance for mining. Perhaps placing a new Command Center or Hive Or Nexus next to the gas might solve that issue?
Lowko, please, very much please, during next mission turn up music volume a little and do the following: 1. Press Enter 2. Write: radio free zerg 3. Press Enter 4. ???? 5. PROFIT P.S. Am I the only one, that tried to cover whole map with creep in Zerg campaign maps when bored? P.S. 2 Similar as in WC3, when you click on neutral critter about 14 times in a way that it gives reply, there will be Easter Egg Lowko :) Works only in campaign and single player games.
"Very little hand-holding in general. I guess that's one of the characteristics of this game." Kinda, but honestly that was how it was done back then, period. Most games were actually way, WAY worse than StarCraft in that regard. You had a manual, and then go ahead and learn on your own, buddy!
Thank you Lowko! I played SC1 since I was around 5-6 years old, so I don't really understand and remember the storyline. Watching you playing it sure is fun. :)
"we can eventually morph hydras into lurkers" oh lowko... You sweet summer child... That's in Brood War only. I miss the days of replaying StarCraft and the sad realization of remembering I don't get medics, lurkers, corsairs, dark templar/archon, and Valkyries until the Brood War campaign.
Thank you for awesome videos man you speak very articulately, which helps me kinda learn English through your videos. Hope to see more of SC1 makings from you.
Think about dehaka: no such a thing called overlord and creep. Terran-Zerg. Also, lurker is a thing in BROOD WAR. Also, lowko can see the unit damage the same way he did in sc2. I know lowko will never read this comment though.
About the damage stuff, not quite the same as in SC2. In SC2, you will be told which unit can deal a different damage to specific tag (Stalker deal more damage to Armored type unit). In SC1, the tag and the damage type are hidden. The unit size matters. Sizes: large, medium, and small. Some of units' damage could be different because of unit size. For example, Vulture's damage type is "Concussive", which deal 100% damage to small units, 50% to medium, and 25% to large. Under this calculating, Vulture can deal 20 damage to a zergling, 10 damage to a hydralisk, and only 5 damage to a Ultralisk (Not counted in their armor; if counted the damage can be much lower). The table about damage type and unit size is still there: classic.battle.net/scc/GS/damage.shtml
Cue the best music of any rts game or faction ever. 11:42 also note, they arent Hydralisks, they're Hunter Killers, elite versions. A lot of units in the campaign are unique elite stuff, so pay attention to that (i say 4 years after the upload)
in the zerg escort mission, you can win with just the starting hunter killers since they are hero units and come with all upgrades for their type for free, without even losing any if you micro a little bit. just clear a path and send the drone. just sharing as it is intersting.
Lowko, consider making multiple hatcheries per base close to minerals and vespene, you're gonna need macro hatches anyway, might as well use them to increase resource gathering efficiency
I have been loving this playthrough! I can't wait for the next episode to come out. Once you are done playing the Brood War campaign, are you going to play the SC2 campaigns again? I would really enjoy watching them and seeing how the story connects/continues. Keep up the great work, have a fantastic day! :D
Lowko, no, zerg already exist at planet CHar, a player (you) is a young cerebrate assigned to conquer Tarsonis for the swarm due to psi emitter placed by Kerrigan which generally annoys the Overmind and tasked you to find out this device or the source of energy signal thats also why the protoss come to planet Tarsonis. Tarsonis isthe first battlefield for 3 races.
One strategy me and my friends tried was the "Hydra Train". You build 9 or so hatcheries, expand early, and build an infinite number of Hydras while putting the Rally marker within the enemy's camp. Happy hunting 😊
Lowko, a real funny zerg strategy in the campaing is to mass zerling. Make 11 control groups worth of them with the metabolic boost and the adrenal glands and they destroy anything. Altho, that strategy does not work in brood war (the campaing si harder).
Another pinch of nostalgia: Creep do not climb down/up ramps :) When I watched SC2 in first time it was a big surprise for me that creep now spread across ramps too! And in the second mission I just packed all Hunter Killers together and A-clicked my way to victory. They're just too good. *Spoiler* The Protoss who've been scattered in second mission (and also in pre-final Terran one) were actually the remnants of Tassadar's army.
In SC1 the zerg feel like a valid threat and something you need to take care when dealing with, especially due to things like the sunken colonies and how hard they hit. All the units aren't an insta kill and a lack of healers on any army means any damage they deal matters, because the zerg do regenerate. In SC2 the armies have been focussed more towards proper online competitive play so none of them have any glaring differences in strength. So It's way more arcadey. I was the same as alot of people in the comments, Zerg were scary as hell when I was a kid. It was great :)
The voice acting for the first Starcraft is second to none of Blizzard’s games at the time. The writing for the dialogue and plot is very superior to the second game.
I don't think you quite get how mind blowing the Overmind was to those who played Starcraft for the first time during the original release. You play through episode one the Terran campaign and the zerg are just some savage dangerous feral alien race. Then you play episode 2: Enters the Overmind. Yes the base units are savage creatures, but those who weld them are highly intelligent, in fact probably the most intelligent beings in the whole game. A complete contrast to the semi back water vibe the space Terrans exude. The zerg swarm is a extension of the will of the Overmind the perfect creation of the Xel'Naga. It blows you out of the water how sophisticated the Zerg actually are and why psi distributors affect them so much. Suddenly there infectious and assimilating behavior doesn't seems natural but instead made with insidious design of a being that will consume the universe all with devious intelligence. The Overmind deserved more than just a cameo in Star Craft II. I don't know how but Amon was just some spooky guy, far less intimidating.
Marines might seem weak, 1 on 1, but their strength is in their range and numbers, when they focus fire down their counterparts. It's nice how the units are different in strength and style, but they balance out, in the end.
1998 the RTS genre wasn't that old, at least the modern RTS genre. Dune 2 was 1992, which is only 6 years earlier, and everything before (like Siege: Dogs of War) was still quite different.
I believe Starcraft's Zerg were based on Starship Trooper's Zerg so it technically wasn't the first. Also the last vid for the terran campaign on Brood War is a parody of Starship troopers as well.
No spoilers but there are no lurkers (or devourers) until Brood War! In other news, if you're enjoying the Overmind already, I can't WAIT for you to reach Mission 4...
I wish I could experience the zerg intro for the first time again. Imagine playing back in the day, limited information in magazines when the game came out, no youtube, etc. You play the terran campaign and you meet the zerg but you don't really get a lot of information. Some even mention in-game that it may be a confederate weapon. Protoss seem to dislike them, but who are the protoss anyway? then you end the campaign, you start the zerg... and the game hits you with the single most awesome introductory line in recorded history: "AWAKEN MY CHILD AND EMBRACE THE GLORY THAT IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT". This god-like entity with an amazing deep voice talking to you in biblical terms. The moment you realize just how deep the zerg - and the game - are. And then sc2 happened... what an incredible downgrade storywise.
"Zerg Blobs are talking to me, lovely." - Hate to break it to you Lowko, but you are one as well. The main gripe SC1 players who care about lore have with Blizzard is that they completely ignore the characters they established, which they did wonderfully even though you have no player choice and only see game from their perspective. Magistrate was turned into outlaw by Mengsk and later hunted some pirates for Dominion alongside Tom Kazansky Wraith pilot and Magellan Science Vessel of Dominion and Protoss forces of Preator Mojo of Aiur in Custom missions, but mostly he is not spoken of again. Which is a shame, because we get quite a bit of info about him from the fact he was named head of one of thirteen original colonies he was probably member of Tarsonis Old Families like Nova and Duke, yet his approach of caring for his subordinates was probably what got him sent to that backwater. Brood War Terran Commander is different character and given how James acts around Matt Horner it is assumed he was the Magistrate, but no one confirmed this. Cerebrate is never seen or mentioned after Brood War and it is assumed Kerrigan killed it, because she did not want a rival power in the Swarm. And Protoss executor is talked to by other characters, apparently he is younger that Tassadar and was born when Tassadar was already an Executor himself, Fenix comments they fought side by side for hundreds of years and unlike most protoss he is not so set in hirarchial ways of their society that he is willing to work with Dark Templars, which is a big no no since they unleashed psionic storms that nearly destroyed Aiur millenia ago when they started poking around Void energies. Artanis is in awe of him and Tassadar both, yet Blizzard decided to retcon Artanis as the executor you play as and explain his rank of Preator during Brood War as a demotion. Which makes no freaking sense since by that time there was no one left alive who had the authority to demote a commander of that rank. Maybe Aldaris, but he would have his hands full keeping the status of Arbiters as highest caste intact with Conclave gone and no one would accept such status change to a hero like Executor was at the time. When you will played Protoss during Brood War, I hope you will noticed how Artanis reacts to the player and why I think that retconing him as the player character is idiotic.
The Overmind is the single most badass character in the game. We need an Overmind annoucer in SC2. The Zerg campaign is great.
I wish but he's Dead that's why.
TheVocalTune same reason anuberak sounds awful now :(
@@TheVocalTune kerrigan and gym are dead too
Ikr? I hate how they try to make Zerg characters more humanoid and cute.
Overmind did nothing wrong.
Fun fact: You may notice that Daggoth is triggered to tell you to build a spawning pool once you hit 150 minerals. *shudders* Four-pools.
Yep pretty sure SC64 I grew up on is 150 too
I miss the voice of the Overmind as the zerg announcer.
I use Abathur in SC2 which is close enough!
USe Abathur and Dehaka, their voices are very similar to Overmind and Zasz
''awaken my chiled and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the overmind, the eternal will of the swawrm.'' there you go mate :D
Spaaawn mooore overlords 😋🤙
Overmind is the best
The Zerg scared me so much as a kid. I literally had nightmares about them.
There's an upcoming cut-scene of a group of Terrans on a science vessel that has been infested by the Zerg. It was literally the stuff of nightmares when I was a 9 year old playing this for the first time.
That cutscene is terrifying, but it's one of the best in SC1 (second only to the Brood War intro).
Yeah, that cutscene is still awesome. It's like a scene from "Aliens".
"Thank God for cold fusion" XD
You make it sound as if they are not real. You know they are, right?
It really annoys me that SCII has lost so much of the style SCI had. The zerg WERE terrifying, they were disgusting and dark and vicious. Now they're cute. They look like puppies.
SCII was a huge downgrade in terms of style and identity from the first game. The art, the sound, the story, none of it match the original.
I love the bullets bouncing off the hydralisk's "hood" in that scene. Clearly has +3 carapace.

Who else wants the overmind as a co-op commander?!
Heroes of the Storm hero as well please
How the hell cound the overmind be in HotS lmao
A dark archon made of Tassadar and Overmind....
That sounds stupid since Tassadar is also a hero.
Also that sounds stupid.
Also, also, as much as i would love seeing him, i think its gonna be impossible. I would be happy to just have him as a SC2 announcer

I do believe that StarCraft came out when instruction manuals were still a thing, which is why there is less in-game tutorial.
Not just that. Creating an in-game tutorial with flashing unit, in-game hints and screen overlays required a serious development effort. Creating Starcraft 1 was by itself a great challenge to the team, as it was build on top of the Warcraft II engine, that used top-down view of the map, but SC utilizes isometric view. i was thinking the same thing lol
thats what i did in sc1
Yes please release these more often. I enjoyed playing them the 1st time in the 90's, enjoying them again now. Enjoying watching you play them.

That's what I did when I was stuck on this mission not knowing how to win...
I also didn't know "radio free zerg" it was a "cheat code".
Kevkos l feel you Man. I did that as well.
clicking on neutral wildlife multiple times make them explode as a nuke (not a joke)
Not in Remastered :)
Doesn't remastered have BW built-in?
@LowkoTV Please, release these videos more often :D
Not holding your hand is a general theme of pre 2000's games
The Overmind is basically a fleshier version of Sauron 😂
"Very little hand-holding in general. I guess that's one of the characteristics of this game."
Kinda, but honestly that was how it was done back then, period. Most games were actually way, WAY worse than StarCraft in that regard. You had a manual, and then go ahead and learn on your own, buddy!
To be fair, is there any part of SC2 where it told you to get upgrades either? Maybe I'm forgetting it.
"Zerg blobs are talking to me!" Ummm, you're one of them...
I believe he said blobs, you naughty mind ;)
Keyzar Ghazal it was auto-correct, I swear :D
I can certainly understand why the auto-correct makes his move... There are two of them after all... ^^

That one drone that was hanging out by the crystals throughout the first game! :)
Very little hand holding in SC1 because it came with a manual, which actually has quite a lot of the backstory inside it :)
Coming from a SC Vet from 98 your videos make my brain hurt...
*tears up* The memories, those dial up days playing the campaign over and over again because the internet connection was too slow.
Lowko: "The race, Zerg, did not exist before this mission, I suppose."
40k called. Tyranids would like a word with you.
Tyranids were a copy pasta of Alien
Lowko! I always wondered, how did Zerg become your main race? Was it obvious to you? Like love at first sight? :D Great content by the way!
giggity363 it's all about that toothy, chitinious, acidic, creep pulsing love for sure ❤️

Spamming Hydralisks like a true Zerg main
Oh man, Hunter Killers, probably the most terrifying unit in the game next to reavers.
1998 the RTS genre wasn't that old, at least the modern RTS genre. Dune 2 was 1992, which is only 6 years earlier, and everything before (like Siege: Dogs of War) was still quite different.
The nice part about the gases being far away is that you can have 4 to 5 harvesters per gas
man sc1 zerg campaign was very scary while i played it as a kid. SC2 I dont find zerg terrifying anymore but replaying sc1 it it is still scary.
Lowko You can build hatchery closer to the gas so you can put only 3 workers
Lowko in SC 1 the best strategy for zerg is mass hydralisks like 6 to 7 control group worth of hydralisks
I believe Starcraft's Zerg were based on Starship Trooper's Zerg so it technically wasn't the first. Also the last vid for the terran campaign on Brood War is a parody of Starship troopers as well.
Lurkers appeared only is brood war and DTs are currently banished lore wise (but not for long), so no worries about the detection :)
Except that one mission (8th I think) where you should not allow a single DT escape
VArsovski10 True, but he'll be well informed when detection will be needed
I remember playing this game on pc. So nostalgic :’)
No spoilers but there are no lurkers (or devourers) until Brood War!
In other news, if you're enjoying the Overmind already, I can't WAIT for you to reach Mission 4...
Hydralisk/Guardian combo is very effective for later Protoss missions.
hydra /guardian expensive and long, hydra n zerglings swarms still the basic. Muta n zerglings is the super combo way back then
I wish I could experience the zerg intro for the first time again.
In this game, named units are as strong as the base unit with all upgrades.
The name of the mod is starcraft2 mass recall , and you can play sc1 in sc2 engine and graphics
First time I played this mission I wondered "What's that eyeball?? Why is he so important"
I...I didn't know english back then
"Zerg Blobs are talking to me, lovely." - Hate to break it to you Lowko, but you are one as well.
More live matches pleaseeee
OMFG THAT DRONE ON 5:07 IS TRIGGERING MY OCD
This is gonna be good.
I want the Overmind to be the next Coop commander.
Has anybody told Lowko that ranged units have a chance to miss with each attack, especially when enemy units have cover or are on high ground?
