Heard he was playing in Rotterdam. Got tickets and I was there tonight. Absolute joy to watch him being competitive and winning the first set. That backhand is a piece of art, even more in real life. Felt like the last chance to see him play!
Lucky you!
Likewise Rich!! As soon as they planned the match, I booked my tickets.
What a show, that backhand. The ambiance was also very nice!!
And Medvedev really showed that you can't blink.
Amazing memory in my pocket.
@elbouiss Great to hear man, indeed a memory to cherish.
yeah I love watching Medvedev play.
People need to stop only commending Stan's backhand. HIS FOREHAND IS EPIC TOO. ALWAYS HAS BEEN. technique, power, everything. So smooth. Plus a solid serve. The guy is one of the most beautiful ball strikers ever. NOT JUST HIS BACKHAND.
But I guess his forehand is one of the top ones, while his backhand is THE TOP one lol
Nothing compares to Federer's backhend @@jimmychan9582
@@jimmychan9582 Exactly right. S/O to Stan's power FH and touch too. Great privilege to watch over the years
Stan has everything. Backhand, forehand, serve, volley. But his strength is hogging the baseline. At his prime, you can't get a ball past this guy. He'll somehow defend, counterpunch and then launch rockets after 5-10 shots or more in the rally afterwards to close the point... he was truly scary in his peak God-mode days.
@ baseline warfare with (basically) two forehands.
I will deeply miss Wawrinka and his beautiful obh.
obh ?? what is this ?
@@stangreen3007one hand backhand
@@stangreen3007 mo*on
Yep
Indeed, his one hand backhand is beautiful 👍😎💕
Stan the man is still so dangerous. Its a joy to watch him play
dangerous for one set and then he is tired out.
Stan isn't Federer who could play until 41, unfortunately, only Federer can still beat Medvedev at nearly 45.
Stan
if only he would work on his stamina
@@MrPiotrVDon’t you mean his Stanima?
God, I miss Wawrinka as a force on the tour. 2012-2016 was my favourite period - not only Fed, Nadal and Djokovic, but Murray and Wawrinka making it through to the business end of slams and winning some of them. Some epic battles in that period.
Yeah and I also liked watching Ferrer, Berdych, Haas, Del Potro......great era for Tennis.
I will miss Wawrinka and his lovely obh.
Yeah, strange how a simple shot can look so great. With the demise of serve volley, its the only real crowd-pleaser, plus occasional mad rallies.
Shutup bot
@@dn-anonymous What do you mean "the demise of serve volley"? Most players serve and volley all the time.
Stan is not the GOAT but he is an example for all players in the world.
🌍 Example of perseverance, progressing linearly until winning your first slam close to your thirties.
🌍 Example of longevity, being able to maintain a good level on main circuit at almost 40 years old.
A tennis legend.
For me, he is one of the GOATs 😌
Stan is being smart---entering top tournaments while he still can and racking up hefty bank deposits.
He is the Man that defied the Gods.
A glimpse of old "Stan the man", what a backhand and excellent tactics and execution. I was so rooting for him.
0:39 That forehand dropshot by Medvedev was the epitome of elegance.
😆
Massive finesse
Elegance and Medvedev in the same sentence seems awkward
Lol was looking for this comment. I kept rewatching that
Why he didn't just put out his racquet when Stan hit the ball right past him....?😑🙄😒
Stan is one of the raw talent in tennis history that's why this guy won 3 gs in goats era who are not from this planet
talent? Lol guy worked his ass of against people twice as talented.
@@potatoar7564the big 3 also worked their asses off, you act like the big 3 were just chilling at home eating doritos winning slams
@@potatoar7564Agreed, but that backhand is more than hard work. Him being able to serve so fast despite the height and awkward motion is hard work, but the biomechanics of that backhand are something that can't be taught entirely.
@@ericnekli7631 His body type helps a lot. Players with thin, weak bodies cannot hit backhands like him. Although, of course, they worked on building his body "like a tank" for that type of tennis he was producing (Stan himself said that his fitness coach Pierre Paganini, who was also crucial in shaping Federer's game, including his famous footwork, had more influence on his game than his tennis coach).
@@Nautlius01 everybody know they are special
Stan, boy what a backhand.. i could watch it all day. just a work of Art. this gama was more entertaining than the Australian Open final.
Define gama.
@@duanehorton4680😂😂
@ what is gama?
It's a pleasure to see you playing Stan, you still our great player
I love Stan, such a fun and unique player. There will never be another like him ❤️
wawrinka has the best BH of all time
I think Roger has a better BH
@@jjkanal640not even close, If Roger had stan’s backand, he would have won a few more slams.
while nadal exploit roger BH all the time (except 2017), stan attack rafa by his BH
@@Randomhillbilly2312 It doesn't work like that. Roger was a very different player and his BH was a very different shot with many brilliant qualities that his game was based on, and that Stan never had, especially in defence and on the return of serve. Roger's BH was extremely skillful and versatile, with so many options (touch, magical passing shots skills, half volleys from the baseline etc.), even though it didn't have Stan's power. But it made him the most consistently winning player of all time (his 23 consecutive grand slam semifinals is a record that may never be surpassed). Stan's game, including his backhand, has always been more erratic, much less consistent. That's also why it was less successful, and why Roger beat him in almost every match they played.
@@muhammadazzam7545 There we go, that old, immortal myth again. The only matches where Rafa was really exploiting Roger's backhand were those matches at Roland Garros, where Rafa was destroying everyone's backhand. One-handers, two-handers, every single player he faced there. Including Stan's backhand, which he destroyed in very much the same way in their Roland Garros final. Stan was massively struggling on his backhand against Rafa in that match,. like everyone else at Roland Garros against Rafa. You can still watch many matches on RUclips where Roger had no problems on his backhand against Rafa. And no, not just in 2017, but throughout their whole careers, from the early years. He beat Rafa 16 times. Only Djokovic has more wins against Rafa. Wawrinka could beat Nadal 3 times (and lost 19 times).
Stan looks more lean and seemed to move faster and have mote stamina. It’d be great if that means he can be more competitive but either way I’m happy to see him on the court!
One hand back vs two handed back duel was fantastic
Only Wawrinka can go backhand to backhand with a double hand backhander for that long and come out on top of the point.
You should watch Kovacevic
@@realbillymiller1011 on par with peak Wawrinka? If so I shall check it out.
I remembered watching him comfortably handling BH-BH exchanges against Djokovic all match long (at AO?), while most other OHB players at that time (Fed, Thiem, Dimitrov, ...) would switch to FH inside-out shot sooner or later in the same situation. Gasquet is another player who does not shy away from BH-BH exchanges.
@@chubun6631Thiem has the most consistent/dangerous backhand of the three players you mentioned. But in Thiems case, his forehand is even better than his backhand and inside out still provided a tactical advantage, while Wawrinkas Wings are evenly matched, with the Backhand being even more consistent.
@@realbillymiller1011 i like kovacevic but...no. stan's bh is the best ever and kovacevic doesn't even come close.
Du bist ein echter Ehrenmann, Stan Wawrinka. Vielen Dank für dein kämpferisches Potenzial.
At the end of the first set, I was really believing that Stan could make it! Next time
Stan is one of the only players who I hope runs around his forehand on every shot. Thing of beauty.
dang this match looked crazy good, super high level from both
not really that high. Medveded still strugles to generate pace alone. He won on dropshots because stan is old. Now wawrinka doesn't play well for like 2 years now, maybe more. Of course his backhand is beautiful, but his game misses strategy. He just hits the ball back and look for angles until the down the line winner or his opponent breaks. If you don't believe me just wait for his next match.
@@thiagobadin5331 Medvedev has issues because the balls are so darn slow, made to favor players like Sinner and Alcaraz. These balls are injuring players and making the game more boring to watch. This was an epic match though.
@@thiagobadin5331love Stan, but the level from Meddy, besides Rublev for example, is not that good
Was there. An exceptionally high level from both in first set. The returning from both was superb, so some epic rallies!
stan hit spectacular shots today
Medvedev would be one hell of an NBA player and fast break master. His fitness and speed for his size is absolutely off the charts.
A Master class in Tennis . The old guard vs the new . Amazing and spellbinding to watch ! Salute to both players !
Stan just playing for prize money at this point in his career, he knows he can't mix it at the top level anymore, but it's still an honour and a privilege to watch him grace our screens with incredibly watchable tennis. He's a legend.
Stan is playing to compete and stay in shape. He is not winning too much prize money these days.
Stan the Man. One of the GOATs imho.
Enserio Wawrinka juega tan bien con casi 40 años de edad ? Es uno de los mayores talentos que he visto
Vintage Stan Wawrinka. My favourite played of all time. In his prime he he was the threat to the big 3, bullying Nadal in AO 2014 final
His best win in the majors has to be FO 2015. Those backhand lasers were eating Djokovic up
Tweener from Stan the man 😮❤❤
Wawrinka has the best backhand. Even his forehand is very powerful. His foreman reminds of Del Potro.
Dang! I was so hoping than Stan would win. That first set though was awesome!
Amazing match 🎉 Rotterdam is one of the best looking tennis court for televised matches
Two of my absolute favorite players. Totally different games, but an excellent example of how the complexities of tennis can produce equally beautiful outcomes in different styles. Stan, in his heyday would not, IMO, gone down to Medvedev, 6-1 in the third.
Best one handed in the game ever 👍🏻
Of course this wawrinka is not consistent at all if we consider how he used to play, but he still got some great shots tho… first set he played unbelievably well for almost 40 years of age against one of the top players on tour. Good job!
He has the shots against the best in the business. As he gets older, stamina will always be a big problem. He can have a brilliant game/match here and there, but usually can't go all the way.
@@chubun6631 that’s exactly it and unfortunately this is not enough to win, especially with the big guys. Well, he might also have this problem with other players as he managed to play finals in a couple of 250 but not winning 🤷🏻♂️
@@chubun6631 He is just a bit slow full stop regardless of age. His shot-making is first class but he won't chase down balls consistently, or can't, because he gets there a fraction too late. He hits even better than Federer but the latter was incredibly good at defence too before injuries caught up with him as they do after 25 years of elite play.
😮😮😮that cross court half volley winner at 0:27 made me faint😂❤❤❤. We love u Stan the backhand😊 journey man!!! (Especially those inside out backhands)
Stan - Several Weeks Away From
( 40th ) Birthday - March 28th - 1985.. 👍👏👌💪..
Danill Needs A Trophy Sooner Rather Than Later.. 🙏..
stan the man,my holygod one-hand backhand, never ever see this type player agian🥺🙏🏻
I dont care he lost. Stan is just a JOY TO WATCH. What A Player!!!
0:50 What a beautiful point, That too on a set point. 🎾
Always a great player Stan the Man
It’s really nice to watch the match with little volume. Just to silent off the unnecessary noises.
Anw Stan’s play is closest to Federer’s. only sharper. Very nice to watch.
To me Wawrinka has great touch while Medvedev doesn't, but Medvedev is a warrior, never gives up and in the end wins.
Это у тебя нет навыков😂😂😂
@@wladurban8520 don't worry, I've got plenty.
The turn around for these tournaments is crazy. On Monday Stan was knocked out of Montpellier, within a week entered travelled to and been knocked out of Rotterdam. Insane.
Turnaround is one word, not two.
@@duanehorton4680 Thank you for that duanehorton4680, that it?
Love Meddy! Stan, what a fighter! Great match!
I feel for Stan trying to run the best he can with his beat up knees. Still hits some of the best shots in tennis history 😊
love stan 4ever!
We will all miss the best one-handed back hand in the history of the game when it's gone.
Wawrinka is a joy to watch
OK let's hope that Meddy finally ends the drought
Saw him in st Petersburg in 2015, his bh was so amazing after Beating Djokovic at Us open final
Stan’s pushing 40 btw. 40!! And he’s still so good!
Молодцы
Still don't forget the 2015 Roland Garros final when Stan beat Nole. Nole was playing good but Stan was just unbeatable that day.. On his peak, he could beat anyone, including the big 3.
Stan has the most elegant backhand in the history of tennis .. Period .
After Roger Federer of course 😊
Denis Sapovalov also has a beautiful backhand
@ I agree .. the problem with Shapovalov that he makes a lot of unforced errors .. if he fixed this problem he can be easily world’s number 1
Roger's backhand was a joy to watch. Hit with grace and elegance, and - especially in the Ljubicic era - with great power and precision, too. But Stan's BH is on an other level in terms of power and consistency.
@ agree 100% with you, he does make too many errors
Winning 3 GS in era of Federer, Nadal and Dokovic is crazy.
Wunderbares 🎾❤️🎾❤️🎾❤️🎾 keep swinging 🎾😇🎾😇🎾
Great to see Stanimal playing at a high level the first couple of sets.
Wawrinka, Thiem, Federer have some of the smoothest backhand stroke. Must be a Swiss thing
Thiem is Austrian but yep they all have great backhands
Henry Bernet, the 18-year-old Swiss one-hander, won the Australian Open juniors just several days ago. So there is some hope for the Swiss tradition. But those three players had phenomenally good backhands, although I'm not sure I would call Thiem's (or maybe even Wawinka's) backhand "smooth". More like "powerful", a bit laborious at times, but extremely effective. Players like Gasquet (or now Musetti) were on the smoother, more elegant side.
I think in this match you can see that Stan is nearly 40! Med is a very good player and one can see why he has a US Open to his name. But if they were playing at their best, Stan would have won; only dude out of literally less than half a dozen of players to have bested peak Nadal, Djokovic and Murray (i.e. 3 out of 4 of the Big4).
That big match Stan was there but Medvedev is incredible defensively..
I love Stan!
The game has evolved so much that Grand Slam Champions like Thiem and Wawrinka struggle to win matches after coming back from injuries. I think Wawrinka is on a 7 match losing streak, but If he keeps playing like this, I think he will end that streak soon.
Love love love Meddy!
Great stuff by Stan but time remains the undefeated champion.
physical match!
Stan just doest have the gas to play long matches anymore. Otherwise he would still be deadly opponent
Stan plays like a 25 year old, but as the match progresses, he slows down like a 50 year old man and pants and puffs.
@@pauljohnson6019best case scenario for him would be to push and win in 2 sets
@@pauljohnson6019 True. If he loses the first set there's a high chance he's loses in straights. At least he still has power in that backhand
@Kwame1957 Yes, he's soon going to end up like Murray.
It's hard for older player to keep the same energy for 3 sets or more. When i watch the first set feels like wawrinka go all out and then gas out for the 3rd set
Wawrinka mil veces antes que Mevdeved, te amo Stan ❤❤❤
Stan looks youthful in his movement.
Great all round game from Stan. Looks alot fitter.
People say Stan should retire. I don’t know why. Beauty to watch. Challenging a former number 1 like this. Sure the legs were gone mostly after that first set but what a match. The oldies aren’t done yet: Stan, Gasquet (almost), Monfils, Dimotrov (afraid also nearing his end). Let’s enjoy while we can. I’m not putting Novak in here for that bivouac reasons. That’s still another level.
Stan😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Great player. Stan
0:42 WTF is that😂😂😂
Stan the Man!
dear lord make the courts faster... Nothing goes through
Отличный матч,Стэн блеснул,Даня показал класс.
Stanislas Wawrinka is back.
How?
Still good but the age makes it difficult to keep up that tempo for 3 sets
Massive Wawrinka fan, but why couldn't Danil play like this at Australian Open??
Stan makes that noise even to take a step.
Stan's serve let him down again.
Guga had a cooler backhand.
I am convinced that if Stan had been just 5-7 lbs lighter, he would have won another 3 or 4 more Master's 1000 events.
Not Federer, not Novac, not Nadal, i wanna see a superchampion with the backhand of Stan.
Antes encontraba más ofensivo a Medvedev, encuentro que su juego está muy pasivo, generando poco daño.
Meddy gonna repeat 2023
🤣
A Wawrinka 8 years younger would be very difficult to beat by Medve
Everyone knows he can beat Stan if he can take it to the 3rd set.
Stan’s still got the level. He just can’t maintain any longer than a set. His aging body is the limiting factor here.
Because they are both probably near the end of their careers , when they are gone , who is around to replace Wavrinka & Dymitriov??
Along with Federer , their games made tennis a lot more interesting to watch than it otherwise would be
The court looks so slow
You literally see that they miss the speed the courts and balls have had early.
Stan has the backhand sword
Stan still has that quality that made him dangerous, just as much as Nadal, Federer and others. But as it was the case with them, he is troubled by his age now. Simply can't do anything against the death march of time. The Tennis generation of the Big 3 is the greatest Tennis generation ever... Everyone of them is peak quality, but just couldn't contend with the unstoppable forces that were the Big Three. Put them in literally any other generation and they'll have 5+ slams at least.
wow so cool
Stan thanks for still staying in tours
Wow...Stan was giving Daniil a run for his money in the first set...😣😒
Day 1 Match ;(
*This needed to be a Qtr/Semi-Final*
