      Stan has everything. Backhand, forehand, serve, volley. But his strength is hogging the baseline. At his prime, you can't get a ball past this guy. He'll somehow defend, counterpunch and then launch rockets after 5-10 shots or more in the rally afterwards to close the point... he was truly scary in his peak God-mode days.

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. 6 дней назад +8

      @@Randomhillbilly2312 It doesn't work like that. Roger was a very different player and his BH was a very different shot with many brilliant qualities that his game was based on, and that Stan never had, especially in defence and on the return of serve. Roger's BH was extremely skillful and versatile, with so many options (touch, magical passing shots skills, half volleys from the baseline etc.), even though it didn't have Stan's power. But it made him the most consistently winning player of all time (his 23 consecutive grand slam semifinals is a record that may never be surpassed). Stan's game, including his backhand, has always been more erratic, much less consistent. That's also why it was less successful, and why Roger beat him in almost every match they played.

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. 6 дней назад

      @@muhammadazzam7545 There we go, that old, immortal myth again. The only matches where Rafa was really exploiting Roger's backhand were those matches at Roland Garros, where Rafa was destroying everyone's backhand. One-handers, two-handers, every single player he faced there. Including Stan's backhand, which he destroyed in very much the same way in their Roland Garros final. Stan was massively struggling on his backhand against Rafa in that match,. like everyone else at Roland Garros against Rafa. You can still watch many matches on RUclips where Roger had no problems on his backhand against Rafa. And no, not just in 2017, but throughout their whole careers, from the early years. He beat Rafa 16 times. Only Djokovic has more wins against Rafa. Wawrinka could beat Nadal 3 times (and lost 19 times).

      Henry Bernet, the 18-year-old Swiss one-hander, won the Australian Open juniors just several days ago. So there is some hope for the Swiss tradition. But those three players had phenomenally good backhands, although I'm not sure I would call Thiem's (or maybe even Wawinka's) backhand "smooth". More like "powerful", a bit laborious at times, but extremely effective. Players like Gasquet (or now Musetti) were on the smoother, more elegant side.

    I think in this match you can see that Stan is nearly 40! Med is a very good player and one can see why he has a US Open to his name. But if they were playing at their best, Stan would have won; only dude out of literally less than half a dozen of players to have bested peak Nadal, Djokovic and Murray (i.e. 3 out of 4 of the Big4).

    The game has evolved so much that Grand Slam Champions like Thiem and Wawrinka struggle to win matches after coming back from injuries. I think Wawrinka is on a 7 match losing streak, but If he keeps playing like this, I think he will end that streak soon.

    People say Stan should retire. I don’t know why. Beauty to watch. Challenging a former number 1 like this. Sure the legs were gone mostly after that first set but what a match. The oldies aren’t done yet: Stan, Gasquet (almost), Monfils, Dimotrov (afraid also nearing his end). Let’s enjoy while we can. I’m not putting Novak in here for that bivouac reasons. That’s still another level.

    Stan still has that quality that made him dangerous, just as much as Nadal, Federer and others. But as it was the case with them, he is troubled by his age now. Simply can't do anything against the death march of time. The Tennis generation of the Big 3 is the greatest Tennis generation ever... Everyone of them is peak quality, but just couldn't contend with the unstoppable forces that were the Big Three. Put them in literally any other generation and they'll have 5+ slams at least.
