Who'd have thought that this match would end up being so significant. This was the final Grand Slam match win (fitting that it was at Wimbledon) of Roger Federer's illustrious career. Sonego should wear this loss like a badge of honour.

All the people in this comment section saying, "Oh a 40 year old Federer got to the quarters. Djokovic is dominating in a weak era" are undermining not only Djokovic's achievements but also Federer's. Not every good player who has aged to 40 can win like Federer does.
I don't think they realize the genius of Roger Federer. He was one of the fittest guys on tour when he was dominant. They have lost sight of how fit these guys are and how advanced sports science is nowadays. Their nutrition, fitness regimes and recovery procedures are controlled to the T. A
One reason for the dominance of the Big 3 has been their superior fitness right from a young age. They haven't lost a lot of that fitness. If anything Djokovic has become even fitter. And all three of them are unbelievable match players. They find ways to win. A lot of players will lose matches in slams where they lose the first or second set. Don't know why so many people emphasize that Roger is almost 40, like that is a handicap. He is completely focused on this one tournament, hasn't played basically for a year and a half which means he is fully rested. His game is perfectly suited for grass, quick points means that he doesn't spend much energy (no long rallies). On grass, experience, serve and precision of shots are most important - not speed and durability. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he manages to reach the finals, maybe even beat Novak. This is maybe a strategy of Roger fans to reduce pressure and expectations from him. Coming from a Serbian, Novak fan :)

If he gets better. When he makes much less mistakes and plays overall better and a little luck. It's very hard, but not impossible. These 2 are two strong players out of the next gen. I hope

Nahh, he won't. Too tuff for him beating 2 amazing 25 years old players.

I would say, he has a 10% chance of winning this slam. His first tough game is going to be his next game and he hasn't been at his best till now. He has shown some glimpses though but he hasn't tightened the screws yet which is understandable for a 40 yo guy.

GOAT . Sonego was a tricky opponent but Federer was stronger as the game moved on . Both players made a joyable game to watch , well done .

Last ever win for Federer. Sad, he looked vintage here

I am glad to see Federer moving forward, but I am honestly surprised to read so many comments talking of how he is cruising through opponents and playing close to his historical top form.
What Roger is doing at almost 40yo is fantastic and of course he still has the magic touch, but he his forehand so far as not look as the killer shot that it used to be and his serve percentages and aces are fine but not impressive.
He has not faced serious challenging opposition so far in Mannarino, Gasquet and Sonego, with home-hero Norrie being the biggest test, so it is probably very soon to pick current Federer as a favourite for the title. If he was to beat Medvedev/Hurkacz, I'd still say that he would not be the favourite in the semis against Berrettini or Augier-Alassime. If he can pull it off, really great for him!

Last singles win in Fed's career. Tiny whiny hope of a comeback if his knee gets better in the future . . ??😭💙
