Great video man, very informative. One thing I like to use to clean pitch and gum off of my saw blades and such is "Easy Off Oven Cleaner." I put my blades in the kitchen sink (SHHH, Don't tell the Mrs.) give them all a good spraying and let sit about 15 minutes. A quick rinse with running water and they are as clean as a whistle.
BLO should be a scented candle fragrance in my humble opinion. That with a couple coats of paste wax is one of my absolute favorite finishes. I also use it as an excellent for CA finishes when I turn pens.
Would just like to add that in the good old days Turpentine was used as a thinner on oil based glosses and varnishes before it became too expensive but it gives a greater shine finish than Mineral spirit/white spirit/turps substitute they are just a cheaper solution.
I understand why...every video about solvents either is confusing or so dry it's unwatchable. "Paint Thinner" is the most overused label...technically any solvent used to thin paint is a "paint thinner".
If this left you more confused you need an intro or practice yourself with each product. Buy it and/ or watch videos to see what it can help or Destroy!
I love the smell of turpentine too, and from what I've read online quite a few others do also. Of course you have to be careful not to overdue it, but generally I see turpentine as a good old-fashioned product with a fascinating history. One guy online even suggested adding a drop or two to the laundry to give it a fresh pine scent! Haven't tried it yet though.

Great tip with acetone. I am 5 min into video and I found info that I needed. I need to clean up my (beater) bike a bit before I apply some rust proofing paint and I was not sure what to use to prep the metal. Thanks!
I used to work in a small custom metal fab shop that had been around for four generations and we used MEK to clean aluminum before welding on it. Aluminum has to be super clean for good tig welds, at least in my experience.

Boiled Linseed oil will NOT act as a thinner for oil based paints because oil based paints ARE almost always linseed oil with color added. So adding boiled linseed oil will not actually thin oil based paints since they are already colored linseed oil. In other words, you can't thin linseed oil by adding linseed oil. However, I suppose by adding it, you could theoretically mute the color a bit but I have never heard of anyone actually doing that and it would make no sense anyway. To thin oil based paints, you use mineral spirits or turpentine. Mineral spirits is a better choice, though, since it costs far less and does the same thing. By the way, mineral spirits makes a great parts cleaner. It's what I use in my parts cleaner station. (I've been working with all these products for almost 60 years now. I also build reproduction period furniture and restore valuable real period furniture. ) Also, be very careful with how you use acetone and lacquer thinner. They can destroy finishes, plastics, etc. I do use them on metal, when cleaning electronic contacts, etc. One other thing: Denatured alcohol is not the best way to clean sawdust from wood as mentioned in this video. It evaporates quickly but sawdust does not evaporate. However, it won't hurt wood and it can be used to clean wood without raising the grain. (Water raises the grain and, in fact, water is used for that very purpose. Once the grain is raised, it can be removed.) To remove sawdust, you can wipe it off with a slightly damp rag or blow it off with compressed air. If you really want to get rid of all the dust before, for example, lacquering, use a tack cloth.

Great video. I have just treated an english white oak beam with boiled linseed oil and after 3 days its dried way to dark. I obviously didn't sand it enough prior and would like to use acetone to remove the oil before i go back to the sander and start again. Would acetone do the trick and break the linseed oil down so i can wipe it off?
I love using acetone too it makes your hands really really cold because it evaporates so fast! Reading the can it says to not let it contact your hands (ops I've let it a few times...) probably because our skin acts as a membrane so chemicals can leech into our body (cancer???). What is considered "good" adhesion for metal? I have experimented with so many different products... Epoxy sticks to it so hard that I cant scrape into it with my fingernail without nearly breaking it. Self etching I can just about always peal up with my finger nail, regular DTM paints easily pull up with the fingernail test. What should you be looking for to be considered "good" adhesion to metal?

Thanks. They are different, but my guess would be that Acetone would be a bit stronger, although there are certainly many times where Lacquer thinner will do a job that Acetone cannot.

Just watch a entry level chemestry series. There are good reasons why different solvents react to different materials. Most organic compound are soluble with many solvents. You need to simply look at the MSDS sheet. You should also dump that denatured alcohol. It is just ethanol with additives and poison added to it so people wouldn't drink it. Save yourself some money, forment and distill your own.
Hi, I need your help... I just got my new home and the kitchen cabinets were not painted as I expected and I stared putting paint on it, but I noticed that the paint was satin and needed some gloss, I went to store and got some gloss but I at soonest I put it on the fist cabinet, it was so glossy, I think they used semi-gloss...now I want to remove the clear gloss I put on that cabinet...I brought thinner to removed it ..is that ok to use?... I just need to remove the clear gloss coat..not the paint... please help me before my husband gets here next week...lol
First I would try just dulling the gloss that you already have on there.... believe it or not try a paper bag first, if that doesn't dull it enough, try some really fine scotch brite pads.
I got a empire chest Thanksgiving weekend, It was in a home of heavy smokers. It’s been stored in my garage airing out for over a month now. You should look into the negatives of toluene and xylene. Then you might pick xylene instead. Xylene is still pretty bad but ... look into it.

Any suggestions on getting the smoke smell out?
If you are going to paint it, paint it with Kilz first.
TSP didn't work?
I agree use Killz first or else the nicotine will seep through your paint
Shellac is an excellent natural sealer. Try it.
