    Hello: First, thank you for posting this video. I just got my Instant Pot yesterday and am doing a whole 5# chicken in it. I appreciate you stating that you used the Poultry button because I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT WAS A FEATURE ON THIS POT! I'm still learning about all the features of this machine. I have your model, too!! I am cooking it at 5.5 min per pound, rounded it up to 28 minutes. I will use the natural release method. I didn't brown the chicken but I did use a rub and injected the chicken with 1 cup of Creole Butter, a Cajun marinade sold here in grocery stores in Louisiana. It's made by Cajun Injector. I'm pretty sure it will taste great. I'm just so thankful you stated the Poultry feature button. I used the Meat feature last night to make a beef stew that was fabulous. Thank you for sharing your video and cooking techniques. Much appreciated!!

    Thank you for the inspiration to cook the chicken as I was new to using the Instant Pot.
    I cooked the whole chicken using calculation, 5.5 x lbs (total pounds. First, I brown (in oil) the neck, and other parts, take out, then brown 4 sides of seasoned whole chicken (adds flavor to the broth), take the tongs to remove the chicken, place it on the trivet. Place neck and other parts back in, add 2 cups chicken broth, add the chicken on the trivet back into the Instant Pot.
    When finish cooking, (NR) wait 10 minutes, then QR release. Remove the chicken, (lift up the trivet by the handles) and move into an oval dish (side 3 inches or higher). Remove the skin, separate the meat from the bones. The meat can be used for more meals by portioning it into separate containers or wrapped to go into the freezer.
    Pour the broth into heatproof large measuring cup or bowl; removing the neck of other parts. Place on rack to cool before going in the fridge (next day, I skim off the fat, freeze the broth for later use).

    Anybody watching this....please do not do what he did. Don’t put you hand over the steam vent..even with a towel over if there is a big chance you will burn your hand. Just keep you hand out of the way and use one finger, or some tongs to move the knob from pressure to vent position. I watched another vlogger burn her hand doing exactly what he did.

    good concise video. after watching a few IP whole chicken videos: a) the tie is a good tip b) quick release is the way to go.
    in videos where people do a similar cook time with natural release, the chickens are obliterated and look overcooked. plus it takes longer.
    most presentable result i've seen in the videos i watched.

      To use natural release without overcooking the food, reduce the initial cooking time by, say, 5 minutes. This principle is absolutely the same as when using a stovetop conventional pressure cooker. It's a good idea to keep a notebook to record cooking times and results.

    Does the Insta Pot steam and hiss like the old fashion pressure cookers during the sealed high pressure cooking phase?

  • @DMDBOTH
    @DMDBOTH 6 лет назад +6

    Multiply the weight in lbs by 5.5 to calculate how many minutes it needs to be under pressure. a 3½lb chicken would be 3.5lbs x 5.5 = 19.5 minutes. I tend to round up and err on the side of caution however, if you are going to put the cooked chicken in the oven to brown then likely 19 minutes would be fine. Your 5lb chicken should have cooked for either 27 or 28 minutes . Hope this helps.

Day 1 I was going to pressure cook a meat ruclips.net/user/postUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and potato stew, decided I wouldn't eat it that night so I went with a slow cook so I could go to bed and put it away in the morning. I love that versatility! The sauté feature works great and adds tons of extra flavor to dishes, and I can easily sizzle meats in the bottom then deglaze for some restaurant worthy flavors.Big bonus - you can cook a whole frozen chicken in about 2 hours. Question: what is the difference between an instant pot, slow cooker(if you are a baby boomer, crock pot) and electric pressure cooker? Please explain, which one should I get? Thank you.

    • @3GCooking
      @3GCooking  5 лет назад

      The Instant Pot is just the. Named brand for an electric pressure cooker. They work by building up pressure inside allowing steam to rise above 212 degrees and cooking food through both pressure and heat for quick cooking. For example chicken cooks about 6-8 minutes per pound. A crock pot is typically used for "low and slow" cooking often with cook times from 4 - 6 hours. Instant Pots have a slow cook option as well so if you plan to pressure cooker it may be a good option for you. I haven't use mine for that, I always just use the crock pot. Hope this helped.

      +Annalise Paige Best way to do it would be to take out the chicken and let it rest. While it is resting put in your veggies and set for 5 minutes then do a quick release. You may need to vary the time a few minutes either direction. If you put the veggies in the the chicken they would be mush.

    love the video. do you suggest breast side down or up when cooking under pressure? I tried your method, 5.5 minutes per lb. breast side up. but when done, the breasts were still raw on the bone side, as was the inside thigh. any ideas? the chicken was fresh out of the fridge.

      Hi Philip, I brown the chicken breast side down, but end up cooking it breast side up. I've had really good luck with 25 minutes for a chicken up to about 6.5 pounds. I tried an eight pound chicken about a week ago and it ended up needing a few more minutes.

      I like it a lot it seems like it's the best of both worlds of the duo and the ultra. Plus you get the sous vide mode it's a real powerhouse machine. Which one do you have?

    It seems like this is more like a braised chicken than a roast chicken. A roast chicken would use a dry heat. A braised chicken does get tender, but the texture is not like a roast chicken. I'm going to give it a try, but I'm not sure I'll get a nice roasted chicken from this method.

    • @3GCooking
      @3GCooking  6 лет назад

      +Janice P that's true, I would probably put roasted in quotes. I wrestled with that and settled on just whole chicken for the title. Let me know how it turns out and what you think.

    When i cooked my whole chicken the other day I had so much liquid in it! When i started i only had about 1 1/2 cup of liquid and when my chicken was finished the whole chicken was covered! Can anyone explain what happened??

    • @3GCooking
      @3GCooking  6 лет назад +2

      +Taylor Kline most chicken that we but from the store are brined in a salt water solution that causes them to retain a lot of water. When it's cooked allot of it gets released and there is no evaporation in the pressure cooker so all of the liquid status inside the pot.

    3G,
    I really enjoyed your video.
    Pro: You listed your ingredients in the text. Constructive Criticism: While I am certain you are fully aware of cross contamination, it might be worth a mention in future poultry videos to aid those younger cooks. All in all, very well done :-)

    Is there a different form of fat that you can use to brown the chicken?

    • @3GCooking
      @3GCooking  7 лет назад

      +Shanna Ogden Absolutely, some good alternatives would be coconut oil, vegetable or olive oil. One thing I would not recommend is but because it will likely burn.

    • @3GCooking

      +William Hepfer tallow is like lard, lard is rendered pork fat, tallow is rendered beef fat. You can use another type of fat like vegetable oil. Butter might burn.

    So comments about venting apart , if you fancy a dose of food poisoning follow this video. Patting a raw chicken with kitchen paper then putting the towels in the side. Just to make sure there’s a good chance of a good dose of food poisoning carry on without washing hands picking up glass containers , spreading germs all over kitchen side .. If your going to blog please , observe basic food safety . Get a back put the chicken it . Wash your hands then when the top of the bags secure give it a good shake . Also sauté mode . Invest in glass lid from instant pot , stops oil splatter burns . Because any oil will catch you and it stings . You can see this guy wince .
    That apart , IP do’s chicken really well ...

      Thanks Peter. Food safety is so important. I had the benefit of the magic of video editing on my side, the benefit for the viewers is that they didn't have to watch me clean up either 😀. I did make it a point to call out washing my hands on my latest video for chicken and rice. Check it out if you get a chance. Have a great day!
