    I believe the Dragon's Tooth sword is loud like that because it's playing the sound effect 5 times; since the damage in-game is calculated as being 5 instances of 20 damage to make up the total of 100 damage that the item's description says in-game

    On the topic of discovering things every playthrough: my last playthrough (probably my 30th or so) is when I finally learned that both Mr. Renton and Sandra can die in the hotel. If they do, Jojo immediately starts sassing toward JC like Jojo is gonna "let" him stay in HIS brand new hotel if he really wants to, but there are gonna be some changes around here and JC had better be cool with that.
    A few playthroughs before that, it was knocking out all the UNATCO troops BEFORE sending the NSF distress signal, so Walton Simons says something to the effect of "Colonel Lewes isn't responding, so I guess you took care of the troopers ... you win this round, but your killswitch is still active," instead of his usual "I've ordered the troops to kill you."
    GOD I love this game.

    the reviews saying the game is too obtuse to enjoy is so insane to me, I beat this game as a 10 year old by just running around skipping through conversations and shooting everyone. They're missing the point that this game has so much freedom that if role-playing or stealth never even occurs to you as an option you won't ever be hindered or stopped.

    I remember reading the planetdeusex forums, and one of the many silly little theories was that Jock was killed off camera at some point and replaced with an AI in the helicopter for the rest of the game.
    The reason why? There are credits for both Jock and 'Black Helicopter' at the end of the game.

    It's wonderful that you can put out a Deus Ex review in 2021 and find new things to say about it that I've never heard before. You bring such a unique touch to your reviews, I treasure each of them and have rewatched so many, sometimes multiple times. You're far and away my favorite youtuber, its criminal that your stats aren't in line with other channels that produce content at half the quality. I've shared your videos around to my friends. I actually found out not long ago why the Dragon's Tooth Sword has such a loud hit sound. It's because each attack is actually coded to be 5 simultaneous attacks, and the overlapping sound effects make it loud and a bit static-y. That's also why the sword can't destroy things like security cameras, despite the info card's figure of 100 damage. It actually does 20x5 damage, which is below the required threshold of 50.

      Not sure whatever happened to her, I think she might have peaked early, still left a delibal impression.. every time I attend a masked ball I am fucking strapped with Snickers, although you know, it's hard to not take up an appetite with all that lead paint.. as another great leader once said.. "lead paint, tasty but deadly!"
      Wait.. is that why we're always trying to shoot the poor? Holy shit.. and I thought it was malicious, this whole time we were just trying to feed them.. fuckin ingrates...

    Funny thing, you can get both the sniper rifle and crossbow about 5 minutes after you leave the dock, while the gep gun can only be found about half-way trough the game. Also, if you want a decent combat build without actually spending skillpoints on weapon ability, get the sniper rifle and keep slapping every weapon mod you find on it, by the time you get to new york, it should be a very effective no-scope headshot machine. Also, you get exactly one reward for being non-lethal, if you kill the nsf troops inside castle clinton, Carter will not give you extra stuff at the armory.

    edit: This is the best video covering Deus Ex on the internet. The time you spent showing and talking about all the details and optional fun things you can do really shows the breadth of the game in a way I haven't seen anyone else do. I also appreciate the mention of Goldeneye as an influence; I find that it is very, very under-recognized in general by the PC gaming community, despite how revolutionary it was for when it came out, and despite the developers of games like this one and Half-Life citing it as a major influence, most PC gamers seem to regard it as a mirage rather than a real game simply because it was exclusive to a console.
    Project for a New American Century. That's the real version of a "Majestic 12" who are all operating to carry out a goal in coordination with each other, even if they appeared to have disparate roles in the Bush Administration and wherever else the people who put their names to that document were during that period.

    On the subject of paul, some RPGs today have found that the answer to "character that dies having relevance later" is to have multiple characters that can fill that role. You have the primary, expected character, but also a background character who can act as understudy and do some of the same things slightly differently or for different reasons, and if that one can die chuck in a third person you barely meet at all who can fulfill those plot beats.

    I still remember the days before the internet.
    It was nice. Things really were different after the floodgates opened, and the usage of the internet became ubiquitous through social media in the late 00's. Before then it was just that thing nerds used, and I knew that "normies" and the general public wouldn't be able to handle it. They'd be stumbling drunk into a place they don't understand, and nothing would be the same anymore.
    Now the world is slowly becoming 4chan, and the internet has become srs bizness for real. The more the line between reality and the internet blurs, the lamer both get.

      I'm only a -late- mid-millennial and even I miss the days when the height of online social media was myspace, enjoyed by a minority of users. And even they weren't casuals like those of today. Hell, a lot of profile pages were extensively customized. The term "casuals" came about with facebook and the throngs of normals it attracted onto the internet. I shudder to realize I even miss the time when Farmville represented casual gaming.
      P.S.: I somehow confused the cutoff point of the millennial generation for the 90s. I spawned in '88. If you're born before the turn of the millennium and came of age after the turn, you're a millennial, hence the damned name. Couldn't be simpler.

    I love how John Romero, the guy who made Daikatana, one of the most dissapointing and hated games ever, also played a major role in helping to make Deus Ex, and he did so AT THE SAME TIME as making Daikatana. He created the opportunity in the first place by offering Warren Spectre the creative freedom to make the game of his dreams, and also defended Deus Ex and fought against its cancellation. Nobody would ever guess that someone responsible for making such a horrible game could have also been so instrumental in making such a great game. It goes to show that you should be careful not to judge someone based only on the outcome of one project.

    Hey Grim. I fell into the "why does everyone like this game?" camp until a few months ago. I originally played in the mid 2010s and was trying hard to go stealth but was angry how failing stealth made every enemy know my position. This year I started streaming it with my friend acting as Col. Campbell giving me advice on discord. I was in a rough spot where a guard would turn and immediately see me after I quick saved. I ended up firing my crossbow and the tranq dart missed by a wide margin, hit the wall, and the guard immediately went to where it hit. This was the moment it all clicked. As stupid as it fucking sounds, as obvious as it could be.
    I think what really happened was I stopped trying to judge the game or get it off my backlog and was just playing it. It wasn't me as a player against game designers with flaws, it was me fucking up and somehow recovering in a very relatable fashion.
    Anyways, I love you. System Shock 2 was my first Immersive Sim. I still wake up screaming and break out in cold sweats when audio compresses.
    Also don't worry about pleasing me or video length. You make me happy just being you and doing things how you enjoy doing them. We are in the existential dread part of our lives where it's been 30 years since the cold embrace of the world and still feel like we squandered everything. We didn't squander it, Grim. We don't need that feeling of recognition (the fame worship mentioned by the AI) to be happy. We just need to support each other and let people know they matter because we are all humans trying to keep the flame of hope alive in a void of existentialism.
    Stay awesome!

    55:40 It is a very authoritarian ending, yes. But a huge part of the reason authoritarianism is bad is that most authoritarians are greedy, unwilling to listen to the needs of their people, and promote themselves over everything else. If we take Helios as he seems, these don't really apply to Helios - he has little to no material needs or wants, he actively wants to understand the human race and what it wants and needs, and it seems to have little to no ego. It's almost like the thought experiment of the enlightened dictator, a dictator who has all the power but who's primary goal is to maximize his people's happiness (though you have to be careful with that phrasing because you can have a society with high average happiness that exploits and harms many to achieve it). A human could not, realistically, do this role, and even if they did, apon their death you'd have a huge power vaccuum. An AI could actually do the enlightened dictator job, never clogged down in red tape or politics, always looking to make things better for the people it rules over. In practice, one can imagine many 'bugs' or unintended outcomes that would undermine it's perfection.

    "Why they gotta make killing dudes and finding ways to do so, so enjoyable"
    Funny, I never had that issue with Deus Ex... I _did_ however have that issue big time with Dishonored, so much so as to nearly ruin the experience for me. Mostly because that game actively does chastise and penalize you for going lethal, yet playing non lethal is kinda dull...
    Also tranq darts stack, once you get higher skill you can easily double tap and it sends people to sleep near instantly.
    And I'd describe Dragon Age Origins as a great AAA game made by people who cared, it's also the Swan Song of Bioware. The last game made by the golden age team and before the dark times. It was directly the result of them needing money to finish Dragon Age Origins, what many in Bioware considered their magnum opus over Mass Effect (though history went the other way) that led to them floating too many shares, and EA performing a hostile takeover using shell companies. RIP Bioware.

      It doesn't help that they treated Brent Knowles, like Milton in Office Space, and did their level best to scrape his name off of DA:O, as the one who'd created & written the entire setting, retroactively elevating David Gaider from character writer for Alistair & Morrigan to lead writer. Dragon Age 2 is what happens, when you jealously toss out the existing world-building, and believe EA's hype about yourself, with five years less time than it would take to start from scratch.

    • @planescaped
      @planescaped 2 года назад

      @@futonrevolution7671 That I did not know. Wish there were more people covering DA:O, but it seems to have sadly been forgotten. Partly because it became lost in Mass Effect's shadow and partly because of it releasing when good bioware was becoming EA-Bioware.
      Nice portrait btw. :P

    • @futonrevolution7671
      @futonrevolution7671 2 года назад +1

      @@planescaped Thanks, chief! Yeah, DA:O's been a victim of revisionist history, by EAWare's need to convince people it's not just a label slapped onto a different studio. You can't make it seem like it's just a first draft for DA: Inky, or that The Warden isn't integral to the setting, or that the first ME had a plot that made actual sense (granted, it was basically a competently-told version of Star Control 3, of all things), if you acknowledge its existence.
      Poor Dragon Age 2 has been dumped into the same pit, as its EAWare transitional period marketing material... *especially* David Silverman's "When, you press a button, something awesome has to happen. So, Button Awesome, connected now!" and Jennifer Hepler going on and on about how player choice in a story requires meaningful options "from virginal girl-next-door to crazy-up-against-a-wall-let's-get-it-on-right-here" interviews. Small wonder that her only major contribution to DA:O was the Branka portion of the Deep Roads.
      I keep trying to make a guide for running a 3x Ranger + 3 Wolves + 3 Bears party. Being able to add a 4th Ranger makes the "Quests and Legends" mod a requirement for the build. It litters the cutscenes with wolves zooming around, backwards, and floating bears with upside-down spherical bodies. Unfortunately, it runs into *slight* problems with Old BioWare's memory leak issues, though, and - since you can end up with unsummonable invincible pets, if you're not extremely careful - I can't find a way to get through Denerim Market without the game crashing. Scenes in the party camp allow you to summon even more, which has gotten me up to a max party size of 29. Maybe, some decade, I'll mod the casting animation to have enough time for Spiders; they'll probably spawn under the map like Leliana in speedruns.

  • @joshuacollins385
    @joshuacollins385 2 года назад +10

    Left/right is always too simplistic, but the game (outside of the authoritarian options) is definitely anti-government and anti-authoritarian, and that can be both a left and right wing attitude.
    One part that comes to mind is that in the USA of Deus Ex, civilian gun ownership has been outlawed, and that this makes most civilians defenceless. While 2nd amendment rights are typically seen as a right wing talking point, plenty on the left also think that self defence is a human right, leading to left wing organisations like the John Brown Gun Club, the Socialist Rifle Association, and Redneck Revolt.
    Is Deus Ex left wing or right wing on that? I'd argue it's neither, it's just opposed to the concentration of power.
