1977 double live album "You get what you play for" with the late Gregg Philbin on bass. Glad I was around when that came out. If you like commercial REO then enjoy this era.
Just saw them a week ago in Austin and they still rock. Any true REO fan misses Gary but he's been gone from the band over 20 years now. And you gotta admit Dave really puts everything he has into his playing. Watch him when they do "Back on the road again". That may be Bruce's song but Dave steals the show with his guitar. For 5 guys in their 60's, they can still get the job done, and they still all look great for their age. Can't wait for their next show in my area, I'll definitely be there. I've seen them over 50 times since 1982, and it seems to me they just get better everytime.
One of the most underrated front men in the history of rock and roll. Dang, Kevin is good. I've seen them seven times in the 70's and 80's, and this show is as good or better than those shows. Of course, they were all great.
REO Speedwagon has always had a big influence on me. Gary Ricrath was a great player. I used to learn all his riffs back in my youth starting out on guitar!
I've seen REO live a few times and being a guitar player since I was 12 and now i'm 43, Dave still kills me with his chops. All those saying REO isn't the same since Gary.. Come on... Dave has been with REO for decades now and He is just a killer, under-rated guitarist...
I saw Gary 3 times and Dave once. Dave is vert good and gets a bum rap, but he has just been playing Gary's leads. And Gary's Les Paul straight to the Marshall just sounded better. Obviously I have a slanted opinion because I think that Gary was one of the best during the early REO days. Kevin and Gary were great together but they never had a real hit after Gary left. His guitar made Kevin's song come to life.
@@TomBequette I know he had to get back surgery late 2023 so they brought in Matt Bissonette to fill in while Bruce recovers. Matt in the world of bass players is a legend, he's played with David Lee Roth 9his brother Greg was the drummer, he also played with ELO, Ringo, Satriani, Rick Springfield, and Elton to name a few.
ive had the amazing luck to have seen these guys several times in the 80s and 90s and they are just awesome live. literally sound exactly as the record. great great great band and musicians
This is a reincarnation of REO that I really like. They are fk'n STRIPPED and TIGHT here! I also think this is before Cronin started to get really old, as he is in many of the later vids I have watched. The drummer really sets the platform I think. He is probably the only REO drummer w/o the double bass drums and a ton of toms. You can have the "power ballads," but really, the classic, old school tunes sound awesome!!!
Had no idea Richrath died until I saw these comments. I played in several bands when I was younger, and I’ve always enjoyed his work. We played several of REO tunes in our sets. RIP fellow rocker
wow, so all these years later, REO keeps pushin on! So many super groups keep playing, but even though vocals & performance has become weak, its ok, as to their past. Not these guys, as good today, unstoppable actually! Kevin, you got it, we wont see another you boss! RIP Gary, he knows his band will keep going with perfection. Thank you REO for so many years...it will never be time for you to fly!
boy, oh boy..would I love to meet hese guys again!!! The are awesome people...been a long 34 yrs...hope to make it happen again someday....the rock me always!! :) xoxo
Saw them in mid 70s, R.E.O. T.W.O. tour. and they rocked the house, went to 3 or 4 more showes after that, up into late 80s and they still kicked ass. Saw Gary Richrath and his band at a motercycle rally in Iowa in the 90s, and yes he gained a little weight through the years ( dont we all ) but he still set that LES PAUL on fire, great show. this bike rally is still goin on every 4th of july . great bands 3 days ALGONA, IOWA. Put on by ABATE OF IOWA......
my mom worked at a motel in the late 90s like 97 or 98 and they played out here in southern missouri and i think it was bruce who at 12pm asked her if laundry had came through yet and they were supposed to be out that morning but when they got to kevins room they knocked on the door and he had a womans bath robe and one of those pink things you put on your eyes and he came to the door and said get the fuck out and he said something else but i dont remember everything he said but it was funny as hell when she told me that and she hates him for that reason and that reason alone but i can see why he would say that i mean if i was up until 4 in the morning every night and not seeing my wife and kids for long periods of time i would be pissed and want to sleep in for a while too
Amato is an excellent guitar player. It's basic 3 chord rock and roll with great lyrics. His solos are solid. He's as good as he has to be for what the band is.
who are the ~30 people that would apply a "thumbs down" to this?? They have to be haters and complete idiots. the tone is great, the songs are great and well written (like to see them try and write and soo many amazing songs), it's well performed as well as stage performance! Amazing.
Being from Northern Illinois, I remember REO as a local garage band. The only original member left is Neal, the keyboard player. But that is ok. The original front man was a guy named Terry Luttrell. (spelling?) He was on the first album and did it well. But he never would have carried the band to commercial success like Kevin Cronin did. Kevin is a great song writer and front man, and I give him credit for carrying REO to the commercial success that they had.Now addressing the current line up. As much as I loved Gary Richrath on guitar, David Amato has done well replacing him, not only doing all of Gary's licks, but is actually a better technical player than Gary is. Gary has actually gone way down hill in his later years. Brian Hit is a great drummer. He is agressive, but tasteful when being so. Neal hasn't lost a step on keyboards. The current line up of REO is great. By the way, I played guitar for a living for more than 30 years. So I speak from experience when talking about both Gary and David.
+Kevin Doran So cool your post. They are coming to Gibbston valley, New Zealand, for a gig in January 2016 at the greatest venue ever. Natural amphitheater. I'm real excited. Wonder if I'll look stupid asking for a autograph on a LP, selfies with the band are the rage nowadays Hahaha
Kevin Doran who did you play for.also I appreciate your expertise when come paring Gary to David. for me it ain't REO without Gary. he was an exceptional writer and I believe a very underrated guitar player. how many hits have they had since he was kicked out.....I believe zero.
Robert, I should have been kinder and more clear when I was talking about Gary. When I said down hill I meant his health, not his ability as a guitarist. (RIP) He was a hell of a player and a hell of a showman on stage as well. But man did he have a temper! LOL! As for no hits since he left, I read an interview with the original bassist for REO (I think his name is Regis?) He was under the impression that REO does't want any new hits that they are happy just performing the old stuff. (He now lives in Florida as a property investor) Many bands from the past feel this way. KC (of The Sunshine Band) says he never wants a record deal again, he is having too much fun touring and not being under the thumb of a record company. As for who I played with, I would rather communicate that with you in private if that is possible. Thanks for the response.
gaston0770 I miss gary too i would always see him in a bar or in the gas station or just around somewhere and i would talk to him sometimes when i was little and back before i knew who he was i didn’t even know until fall of 2015 and i didn’t start listening to their music until 2 years ago but i can remember my dad turning up the 1977 album up real loud in the truck or when ever one of their songs came on the radio for example roll with the changes came on and i remember on september 15 2015 coming home and my dad got on the computer and he watched some of their live videos and i remember it was the hi infidelity show in denver on like back one the road again when kevin and gary were waving and i said they look like a bunch of girls up there because i didn’t know anything about them or anything from the 70-90s because i was 10 and then i got a playstation and i was playing grand theft auto and the rock station was on and i thought this is way better than everything else and since then ive been listening to old music and i really hate the new music and its turned all the kids my age now into cunts because thats all they do and now they see all these people rapping about stuff that no one cares about but yet they love it and i have no friends because i was raised with common sense and dont do and repeat everything i hear or see on the internet because i just find it purely stupid and i wish that there was more kids like me but theres only one i know of and i never see him more than once every few months and life is boring and the only thing i have to do for fun is play guitar and if it weren’t for gary and reo speedwagon i would never play and id probably be dead by now from depression and boredom but the point is fuck all the new shit kids don’t understand any of it and they talk like all the rap music they listen to and even at the catholic school they cuss and talk about sex and drugs and they kept setting me up to get in trouble because they know they won’t get in trouble and one time i even found a bullet in my back pack that someone put in there and im lucky that no one put drugs in there or else then is be in jail for something that someone else did because the mayor was bringing in the drugs but if this were 1973 none of this would have happened because times were good nothing like any of this ever happened because back then this thing called discipline happened and to this day in this town it only exists in my family and thats sad that we let the world get so bad that even little kids now are doing drugs but when we let kids listen to rap music we should have expected that this would happen
gaston0770 NO, Gary and Dave both are good. Let's not start with comparisons between musicians, of course Gary was excellent with Reo, but Dave does an excellent job too.
I know I'll come off sounding like a "Get off my lawn" type old guy, but when I first saw this band live, the passion was visceral, the fire was in their belly. This sounds like what it is; Great musicians trying to eek out a living the best they can. I have eternal love in my heart for REO and I hope they make as much money as they can. I just long for the old days. youngsters, get to work and give us some ORIGINAL ROCK!!!! Or at least tell me if I'm missing anything new.
As we age. so do the musicians and bands that we grew up with. Very few bands that were considered "classic rock" just a decade ago are still playing. Most retire and fade off into obscurity. Granted, REO is only a shell of them former selves, but so am I. As long as REO/STYX/FOREIGNER/KISS/JOURNEY, etc etc etc still tour, I will support them.
I think this is true. But the big upside is for us, the live music fans. Sure, it would have been amazing to see them in the 1970s, but I wasn’t alive for most of that decade, so I’ll gladly pull out my wallet and buy a ticket when aging rockers who have perfected their “best of” show come through town.
+Vortigan07 Yes, I told Bruce that and he was very appreciative. I will always love this band. They started from my home area. And Gary inspired my own guitar playing career big time. RIP Gary. Miss ya man.
I knew nothing about these guys until about 3 years ago when they came to town touring with Chicago. Kevin had hurt his leg somehow between the previous concert and us, and was on crutches. He had to sit on a stool for the whole thing, and even with that I was hooked. Now I can't get enough of them. This was amazing. Thanks!
+dwashbur Kevin hurt his leg trying to impress a pro basketball player who was in the audience by doing a flying leap off of a piano. (I don't remember who the basketball player was). The athlete later sent a note to Kevin saying "I wasn't impressed". But we all do silly stuff in life and what Kevin did is forgivable.
i just pretend to watch 1 or 2 songs from this show and ended up watching it in its enterity and ironically the song i was looking for wasnt on the setlist hahaha, amazing performance to say the least, great songs, great show and they were thigh as a lamborgini engine. We can cant get bands like this anymore nowadays, so enjoy these 70, 80's bands while they're still on tour and support them 'cause once they're gone, that will be the age when music really dies. On the other hand, lot of hotties in the crowd 😀😋
For those of you that don’t know, this concert was actually released as a live album. One version of it was called arch allies, because sticks was on the other disc. If you want just the loan REO Speedwagon part of the show, I believe it’s called extended versions. I ended up buying the CD thinking that maybe it was some kind of demo compilation or some thing, and was really disappointed. Dave motto is a great guitar player, but he can’t replicate what Gary Richrath does.
Recently saw REO and not only is their music timeless but clearly so are Kevin, Bruce, and Dave. Look at them here and look at them in 2023. 22 years later and they more or less look the same! I'll have what they're having! Rock and roll really does keep you young.
Love you guys and your love songs for along time finally went to one of your concerts with 2more of my faviorte groups Styx and Loverboy loved the light shows and singing was even better in person hope you come back to Grand Rapids in2023
Saw them at the MN in the late eighties. Cheapest concert I have ever been to and also the best. They seem like they aren't just performing, but are having as great of a time as the crowd. It is almost like they just get together to jam and, oh yeah, there just happen to be thousands of people enjoying the jam session.
HELL YAH GOOD WORK WHEN YOU CAN GET IT, THESE GUYS STILL FUCKING ROCK. I WORK IN A GROCERY STORE AND FEEL OLD AT 57. YET WATCHING THESE GUYS, I'M OK. FORGIVE MY SPELLING.
Wish they'd tour Scotland! I'd love to see them!!! Amongst one of the best bands in the world. Alongside our very own Led Zeppelin :-) Only good thing about the UK!!!
Craig Nixon Been a fan myself since 80' and caught them in Belfast in 86' on The Wheels are Turnin' tour then emigrated to Canada in 90' and have been fortunate enough to have seen them a few more times out this way, always a great Rockin' live show
I think they're playing Glasgow, this December. With Status Quo. They're definitely coming to The UK. I'm afraid to say. Ol KC's voice isn't what it was. I've seen them 4 times in London. I'm sorry to say, I won't be going this time
+1600362 Give David some credit. All REO fans love and miss Gary. David had some big shoes to fill. Gary chose to leave the band. David has done as fine a job as can "filling in" for him. (no one can replace Gary.)
Gary Richrath was indeed awfully underrated as a guitar player ! RIP Gary !
My first concert as a teenager was REO and Styx in a gymnasium back in 1975 .. still one of my absolute favorites!
1977 double live album "You get what you play for" with the late Gregg Philbin on bass. Glad I was around when that came out. If you like commercial REO then enjoy this era.

Does anyone know what happened to BRUCE HALL In 2024 I heard they got a new guitar 🎸 player from ELTON JOHN band somebody reply to me soon plz?

I don't know why I keep craving for Gary Richrath everytime I watch this band live.
Seen them live twice, and I would go back again and again, they never get old.
Sam Man gonna see them this sunday in scottsdale.
I got a pick from Bruce Hall last time I seen them. Was in the 2nd row.
Sam Man You are so lucky! I would love to be 2nd row!!!
Bruce Hall looked so happy on the bass the whole time, they all do - like they are still having the times of their lives playing sold out crowds.
Sam Man You are right. They always look like they are having the time of their lives! I enjoy them so much and can listen to them over and over.
I live in the UK and have seen Reo 5 times - I can assure everyone they are the real deal live

Nice
my mom worked at a motel in the late 90s like 97 or 98 and they played out here in southern missouri and i think it was bruce who at 12pm asked her if laundry had came through yet and they were supposed to be out that morning but when they got to kevins room they knocked on the door and he had a womans bath robe and one of those pink things you put on your eyes and he came to the door and said
get the fuck out
and he said something else but i dont remember everything he said but it was funny as hell when she told me that and she hates him for that reason and that reason alone but i can see why he would say that i mean if i was up until 4 in the morning every night and not seeing my wife and kids for long periods of time i would be pissed and want to sleep in for a while too
Amato is an excellent guitar player. It's basic 3 chord rock and roll with great lyrics. His solos are solid. He's as good as he has to be for what the band is.
The problem is Richrath was a very unique player. His sound was very identifiable.

We can cant get bands like this anymore nowadays, so enjoy these 70, 80's bands while they're still on tour and support them 'cause once they're gone, that will be the age when music really dies.
On the other hand, lot of hotties in the crowd 😀😋
Best REO concert, I've seen many shows of this band this is by far TH BEST in terms of sound quality and similarity to studio versions.
Amazing band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love reo speedwagon my faborite band
Recently saw REO and not only is their music timeless but clearly so are Kevin, Bruce, and Dave. Look at them here and look at them in 2023. 22 years later and they more or less look the same! I'll have what they're having! Rock and roll really does keep you young.
Your serious?
For me it just isn't quite the same without Gary. He really could make that guitar sing the songs and he could just play effortlessly.
No kidding! Seen them 5 times! But only with gary ON guitar!! HE was so underrated! R.I.P GARY!
What a great Band, love it
Must of been an awesome live concert!

When they coined the term Rock Gods this is who they were talking about!!!!
I was a teenager and they were (are) tight. Just love the music and lyrics and thats coming from a brother deep into hip hop
It's 8/10/2014 and I am seeing them in 2 hours here in Indianapolis! I promise, they are still amazing!
How this band is not in the HOF is criminal

Great Band !
Great band, grew up listening to them. Thanks for sharing!
Saw them at the MN in the late eighties. Cheapest concert I have ever been to and also the best. They seem like they aren't just performing, but are having as great of a time as the crowd. It is almost like they just get together to jam and, oh yeah, there just happen to be thousands of people enjoying the jam session.
Great band, they sound like on the records. So underrated...
This is their half of the "Arch Allies: Live at Riverport" DVD with Styx!
Me encantan,me traen recuerdos de mis veranos con mis tios.los mejores!!!!!
Awesome music good old classic rock 👍🤘
HELL YAH GOOD WORK WHEN YOU CAN GET IT, THESE GUYS STILL FUCKING ROCK. I WORK IN A GROCERY STORE AND FEEL OLD AT 57. YET WATCHING THESE GUYS, I'M OK. FORGIVE MY SPELLING.
Kevin and Dave haven't changed since 2001, they look decades younger than they are.
+Sam Man yeah today Kevin is 64 and he don't look it
yeah it was Gary
+Danielle Perry neither died
Plastic surgery does wonders.
My favorite REO song and live version of it is Roll with the Changes at 46:23
I didn't know them till isaw joined Cicago in a recent concert. I think they are great.
Had a chance to meet these guys about 7 years ago. It was an out of body experience.
i met them too ... they're really down to earth
yamariz martinez They are genuinely amazed/humbled that we all still love them so much!!!

love of to see these guys
Sana kahit minsan lang.....makabisita sila sa Pilipinas
I'm sorry to say, I won't be going this time
me encanta esta banda
RIP Gary!

Dave Amato can play with the best of them!

Yep an awesome band Reo Speedwangon
I can,t stop it thought gus
Not the same without Gary Richrath. Its like having the Stones wothout Keith!
+1600362 Give David some credit. All REO fans love and miss Gary. David had some big shoes to fill. Gary chose to leave the band. David has done as fine a job as can "filling in" for him. (no one can replace Gary.)
