  • Saeco just re-engineered their Talea Giro superautomatic, releasing the 'Plus' version in the US. This new iteration features a bi-pass doser, improved grinding functionality and some minor functional changes. Watch Gail talk to us about the upgrade and show us how it works.

@BelgianEvo You can keep it on when not in use, but it heats up pretty quickly so if you're not going to be coming back to it again within the next hour or so, I'd power it down. It usually takes about a minute to run through its cycle to get going and then you can steam/brew from there. - Kat

@BelgianEvo You are correct; the beans will determine dosage (7 - 10 grams) and then the dial determine water volume. The max it will grind is what is used for single shots, so keep that in mind when you're dialing in your water volume -- too much and it will taste week, etc. For a double, tap the cup twice in the beginning & it will go through 2 complete brew cycles. - Kat

@BelgianEvo Yep - it does. It has the same insert on the bottom as the Talea Touch, etc. - Kat

@tr7027 Yes, on both accounts; it is a home machine, not a commercial machine, and fairly easy to use so if you haven't used a superauto before, you'll get the hang of it quickly. - Kat

@BelgianEvo It will really depend on your preferences; for example, if what you're trying to replicate is a standard 12 oz. double shot americano, then setting the water volume to 6 oz (so close to the top of the dial) and then hitting it twice will achieve that. If you're trying to replicate a double shot for a latte or cappuccino, then moving the dial just a notch or so above the bottom and then double tapping that is idea. - Kat

They have Talea Giro or Odea Giro; primary difference is that the Odea line do not have bi-pass dosers, have smaller footprints and smaller capacities (water and beans). Also less tweaking features in regard to dialing in the shot (SBS, etc.) - Kat

@Niccaz2005 I don't know that I'd recommend one over the other, save for space considerations. They both perform similarly and well - Kat

@manohelada The Incanto does have some programming options on it, while this does not, so that's always a plus. I like the Incanto's metal case, but I like the side access water/brew group/dregs box on this. It's a tough call -- I think either will be a great buy. - Kat

We have a video called Brew Group Maintenance that gives the run down on how to clean the machine regularly. Check that out and let me know if you have any more questions - thanks! - Kat

BTW, I'm a longtime user of a Saeco Italia from Starbucks for 7 years. When the boiler needed to be replaced, I got a new one. I was aware of the problems of the earlier Talea and Odea as I got one for my sister and my parish pastor and they had leakage problems too. I figured they would fix it with the new version but I guess not. Very disappointed

@SeattleCoffeeGear : Thanks for the answer ! :-) Another question : When you select 3 beans and turn the dial all the way to the left, will it grind the same ammount of beans as when you select 3 beans with the dial all the way to the right and the only difference is the amount of water used? Grtz

@SeattleCoffeeGear : So it's better too use 2 complete brews with a lesser water volume if you want to fill a large glass rather then use allot of water with only 1 brew. correct? :-) And is the machine suppose to stay "on" the whole time also when not using it, or can i shut it down when i have my coffee? How long will it take to make a coffee from a cold start? Is it like the senseo things or will it take longer?

Super late comment on an old video, but I am still using this machine. At 1:42, you asked if it had the newer sensor for oily beans. Never heard or saw the answer. You happen to know the answer? Thank you so much for all your awesome tips!

I just received mine today. When I took it out, the steam wand was just dangling from the unit. I turn it clockwise three times and seemed to be secure. I then followed the instructions and I get the red flashing light after I hear the noise for a few minutes. Brewing the espresso works fine. A little later, noticed a leak under the unit. Any suggestions? I would hate to send it back and wait another week or month for espresso. Thanks in advance. I left msg already to SaecoUSA

Do you know how to manually start a rinse cycle on a Talea Giro ? Normally the machine does this on start up, but if i made 5 drinks and now want to initiate a rinse cycle at the end i cant figure our how to do it??? Driving me nuts!

Is this a good espresso machine to have for an amateur and just for home use?

@daddyg70 This isn't common and should be swapped out by them immediately as a defect - Kat

Hi Gale. I'm subscribed to this channel. I have searched so many of your videos in the hopes of finding some answers to what is happening to my machine that is costing me hundreds of dollars to maintain each year. Every year I have an issue when it comes to descaling the Giro Plus at least once. It will go through the motions perfectly until it's time to start. My machine will go through a test cycle, make its usual noise then the noise will decrease in volume and suddenly... POP. Then the red light will flash fast. I prime the machine again and flush through some water, but the second I turn the steam/water dial off it goes through this cycle again and POP. I have had this machine serviced regularly and each time I take it in for this particular problem they fix it in no time and charge me close to $400. What the? Can you help? Please, I need my baby better or daddy is going to put him out with hard rubbish and get a rubbish one with pods:(

Hello Hellen Lawrie. Sounds like it's the rinsing through the spouts that's not working well. We would think this is related to the brew unit, motor, or gears based on the description, because in order to rinse through the spouts, the machine has to rotate the brew unit to work mode and put it under some strain. You can try to finish the descaling through the steam wand and hope for the best, otherwise it's going to need a bit more repair.
However, not sure what the repairs were done by the repair center, but at some point it becomes more trouble (and money) than it's worth depending on the age of the machine. So keep an eye out for that. Hope that helps with your machine!
