    This game is a true masterpiece, everything about it just "fits together". The world, the puzzles, you, EL0HIM, Milton, Alexandra, the overall purpose of the game.... it all just comes together. It's extremely impressive. I think this game will stand the test of time extremely well, it's a real classic in the making.

      I agree completely. The solidity and complexity of the story and the game play and how they just fit together perfectly is just staggering. After playing it through a couple of times I had no problem buying it again for VR. Definitely worth it.

    There was something magical about this game. On paper it looks a bit weird - puzzles combined with reading of short existential philosophy texts, but the final result with the nice music and the mysterious story was such a blast.

    This fucking game took my breath away. I loved everything about it, the game play, the puzzles, El0him, alexandra, milton. I loved reading everything about in the archive and the time capsules struck me with awe.

    • @Phalxxx
      @Phalxxx 8 лет назад +10

      Same here. Some of the capsules and library entries really got me. For some reason, the one about reminding people to set their pets free (and help them survive without their owner) I found quite heartbreaking.

    • @Trogloglation
      @Trogloglation 8 лет назад +3

      I know right?! That one also got me. There was also this other one called "lyrics", I think. Basically singing everyone's "got it" (you know what he's talking about). But then it goes "Dog's got... Dog's fine!".
      Well shit. That's when the pieces came together for me.

    "The Talos Principle" is a convergence of factors, each great and very well-executed in their own right. The puzzles are so gratifying to solve, the environments have just the right amount of implicit story-telling and mysticism, the story is at the heart what makes us human, and the soundtrack elevates everything into an exquisite experience. One of my favourite "games". Brilliant work, Croteam, truly excellent.

    This is not a game, this is an experience of a life time. Thank you CRO TEAM for making this. The puzzles are amazing but the philosophy behind it is what made a deep impact on me. I was shocked to realize that Talos was created by the same team that was making Serious Sam for 15 years. Usually such devs would be a one-trick horse. Hell, even more diversely skilled teams like Maxis often make a flop once they try a different game genre. But here we have an absolutely polished masterpiece, perfect both in aesthetics and gameplay. A pleasant surprise, this one.

    Major spoilers in the video!
    Just finished the game and I'm totally stunned. I heard university courses about the pihlosophy of conciousnes, but The Talos Principle still shed a new light on my perception of the problems surrounding it.
    I hardly recommend to experience the story! Read as many QR-Codes and texts as you can find in the game to understand the deep topics it adresses. Overall the gamedesign is awesome! The puzzles alone would be enough to make an oustanding game but the story really adds so much. Sometimes you play a game and say: wow I actually learned something here (apart from solving puzzles). Maybe the Talos Principle is the king of them all since it doesn't teach just a language or maths, but it makes you develop questions about the nature of conciousness and the human existance without the "boringness" of a philosophy lecture.

      +Selss Portal is catering to a different demographic. Talos Principle is a pure and later on extremely hard puzzle game. I found my self scratching my head oftentimes trying to beat a puzzle but it also has this rewarding feel to it.

    • @zerotactix5739
      @zerotactix5739 7 лет назад +6

      In my opinion Talos Principle made Portal its bitch. It's longer than both Portal games combined and while at it, the quantity NEVER sacrificed quality.

    • @anotherdepressedmusician
      @anotherdepressedmusician 7 лет назад +4

      +S Well you're only saying that because portal 2 has a very involved story and is extremely action-based. Puzzle wise and well, gameplay wise, Talos Principle knocked it out of the park, nailing both atmosphere and mechanics.
      Let's be honest, even though I love portal, it would eventually get boring if it had no action.

    • @carnictus23
      @carnictus23 7 лет назад

      S well IMO and a lot of other peoples', it's not. But then again, even though they're both puzzle games, TTP has this feeling to it, like bliss, and an incredible story and OST. A lot of portal 2 is comical, and those parts are generally taken less seriously. In Portal 2 it felt like I beat puzzles to get past it, not to get a Sigil like in TTP, which is more rewarding.
      Just my opinion.

    • @Optimus6128
      @Optimus6128 6 лет назад

      I found both Portal and Talos Principle puzzle easy enough. But I loved Talos because of how majestic and interesting it is, with it's visual, music, philosophy, emotions. Now, the puzzles in that DLC that came later are much harder (still haven't finished this one). Maybe some of the star puzzles are harder on the original too.
      There is also The Witness, again majestic and zen, but doesn't have the spatial puzzles (it all seems like cardboard puzzles, even though however later it expands in the environment, interesting ideas for sure), also much much harder and no story. A different less casual experience.
      But from all these, Talos remains one of my favorite game experiences.

    It's interesting watching this "Making Of" video, and reading some of the comments here, and comparing it to my own experiences with the game.
    I liked The Talos Principle a lot, and I think that it's a very good game, but it does have certain flaws that cause the game as a whole to not entirely "work" for me. This is more easily seen if you compare it to one of my all-time favourite games, Riven (the sequel to Myst) which is another puzzle game set in an enigmatic, mysterious environment, but with a very different tone, playing style, and execution.
    Watching Riven's "Making Of" video (it's on RUclips) and comparing it to this is quite revealing. Both games were created by teams that really care about their craft, but I believe that the Riven team were more focused on unifying gameplay, narrative, and environment design from the start, whereas the Talos team began by developing certain game elements (the puzzle mechanics), then developing the environment (the various worlds of ruins), and only at the end deciding on the overall story.
    Talos' story is quite cool -- but it doesn't quite work for me. Firstly, it does veer into pretentiousness a few too many times. It tries to shoehorn in philosophical discussions that don't necessarily fit the gameplay or the "revealed narrative", the storyline as the player uncovers it. The fundamental difference is how the games actually express their core narrative. Where Riven (and to some extent other games in the Myst series, and games like Portal) express philosophical themes through the events the player witnesses and the worlds they explore, Talos too often tries to "dangle" philosophical ideas on top of the game that don't entirely cohere with the actual gameplay experience.
    For example, the story and world of Riven touch on ideas such as art vs science, the nature of religion, civilised vs primitive societies, hubris, and morality, but nowhere in the game do we get an essay or lecture on these topics: instead we explore a world that's been bent out of shape by a mad, twisted megalomaniac, and the game gives us freedom to draw out its themes for ourselves. Though people praise Talos' story -- and I'll admit that the backstory, taken by itself, is interesting and creative -- it doesn't entirely fit with the overall game, and I think one of the reasons is that it was added on at the end of the development process.

    • @allthatyousee18
      @allthatyousee18 Год назад

      Watching Talos' "Making Of" video has really made clear to me why I find the game frustrating. The core gameplay -- the interesting puzzle mechanics, combined into well-designed puzzles, in a world of scenic ruins and quirky technology -- is a very nice, cohesive, polished experience, with well-balanced challenges and a nice mix of fun, character and mystery in the world as we experience it. In the video, you can see how they developed the core of the game -- beginning with an interesting new gameplay mechanic, and the carefully developing levels and the aesthetic of the worlds on top of that.
      I'll also admit that many elements of the story do work. The QR codes in particular are a really nice touch and add the right mix of fun, immersion and personality to the game. We hear the opinions of others who've explored the same worlds we have, which helps the world feel more "real". Notably, I think this is the right way for games to introduce philosophical elements -- through the opinions of different characters, with different personalities, acting in the world. Instead of reading essays on the nature of religion, obedience vs disobedience, and so on, it's far more engaging to read the QR commenters debate whether or not Elohim should be followed.
      However, I think where the game went sideways was in trying to shoehorn every philosophical idea that was somewhat related into the game, in a way that wasn't organic. I'm pretty sure the two guys in the video who wrote most of the final story could make a cool game (or write a short story) out of the narrative they came up with for Talos -- but Talos itself wasn't it. I believe that the deepest cause of Talos' disjointedness -- between its core gameplay and its overarching narrative -- is from bringing in two outsiders to decide on the overall story right at the end of development. Croteam clearly had good instincts in finding writers with creative integrity -- which is why the storyline is overall pretty good -- but without "baking in" the narrative from the start of development, the game was doomed to end up with its fundamental disjointedness. Heck, the iconic "jammers" are core to the game (the game could be called "Jammer" in homage to "Portal") but we have no idea why ELOHIM has a thing for jammer-themed puzzles in particular.
      The idea of a simulated world is cool, but as is said at the end of the video, one reason why the devs chose this premise was because it gave them freedom to explain any element of the gameplay -- it's all part of the simulation! -- which therefore means that very little in the core game has any narrative significance. In games like Riven (the other Myst games do this too, though to a lesser extent, and I believe Portal does as well), every area you explore and item you investigate helps flesh out the core narrative and expresses, even if indirectly, the themes of the game. (One of the simplest, and most effective, ways it does this is by letting you rummage through rooms and possessions belonging to a particular character -- giving you an image of that individual and what kind of person they are.) Imagine if Talos let you explore the abandoned research lab belonging to the characters we hear of in the recordings -- it would have a much more powerful story. (I know they couldn't do this without completely overhauling the game, but I think it would be the right direction to go in.)

    This is the type of game I love. Like Myst and portal. I really liked the graphics and I enjoyed solving the puzzles but there's ridiculously just too many. It began getting too repetitive, not only the puzzles, but the terminals and the desert scenery. I was doing well in puzzles and feeling good about them until some puzzle really became impossible (without cheats), especially some of the stars. Unfortunately, the puzzles and the game felt detached. It's an awful lot of puzzle just to tell you what I think most already know. I did begin enjoying it but later actually disliking it. It was getting painful doing yet another puzzle. You can only do so many using the same tools over and over again. All the writings on the walls, time capsules, pc terminal and the many puzzles just got you to the same end game feeling you missed something. Sure, the Easter eggs were cute, but added little to the game. After so many puzzle and levels, I didn't feel satisfied that I really accomplished anything and the ending left me and the cat with not much left to do.

    the game has terrible bugs that the testers missed in the release version. It spoils the whole impression.

    I hate puzzle game, especially this one, I also hate the setting (platforms floating in space and no continuity between civilisation).
    But the story, the graphics and the voice actors made me love thid game and buy the DLC. I've finished both 100% for the Lore and love them (but please if you are attached to the lore don't find secrets in the DLC, all endings are the same cutscene followed by a black screen and only the quote read differs, huge waste of time).

      You especially hate this game but you love it at the same time and finished it 100%? Take your pills next time before you comment, please.
