The only reason Damian is hated is because every time someone tries to give him character development and make him more than the "Selfish Bat-Brat blood son", they undo it and revert him to an annoyance which is terrible to see because I genuinely like Damian in certain continuities.

"Character Development" in the modern age is really just removing any traits from a character that might cause conflict with others in the cast. Ever notice how it's only ever the prideful, selfish & confident characters that need "development" to be well-written?

Injustice 2 in-game is a great example of this. In the prequel comics, it was shown that Damien that went through significant character development, from showing lots of remorse for killing Dick, to outright rebelling against Ra’s Al Ghul and thwarting his plans. I wonder if the dislike is partially people not having the chance to read his initial comic run with Dick and how it's basically been retconned in other media. It does his character a huge disservice to remove that and not show how damaged he was at the start, and how much he was eventually able to open up thanks to Dick, the same way Bruce was. It personified him as that vulnerable, traumatized part of Bruce who didn't have a chance for a normal life.

I love all the Robins, but Damian is just the most intriguing to me personally, he isn't my favorite character, but his potential is what draws me in. He's awful at first, but that's kind of the point of him, he's supposed to be a new issue for the family to figure out how to adapt to.
I understand not liking him, but frankly, people hate wayyy too much on his character, especially because his first introduction has him being terrible to everyone, and people can't seem to move past it.
But just try and imagine you're this 10yr old child who has been raised to kill and claim your "birthrights" since birth, like you were literally are created and groomed for these purposes!
And then your mom abandons you in a different country with a father who doesn't know you existed who you thought would want you immediately, and brothers you've been raised to believe are below you and less than you because of your blood relations, and none of these people act like how you were expecting them to. And you're now stuck in a situation with basically strangers who hate you and your existence and don't understand or believe in any of what you've been taught your entire life until then. And there's probably more stuff I'm forgetting honestly.
I genuinely cannot imagine how I, as a 10 YEAR OLD CHILD raised to slaughter people, would deal with any of that. I'd probably be worse or more likely died immediately, at least Damian usually grows from the views and lifestyle he was GROOMED into, and becomes a better person(at least when the person writing him doesn't hate his character anyway).
He's a little kid at the start, and just left a death cult for the first time in his life, give the boy a break. If anything, you should be despising Talia's character for rasing him like this in the first place, or in other versions, violating Bruce to create him. But blaming Damian's character for acting like a brat, who was raised explicitly to be a brat, makes so little sense.
Either way, I love all of the bat family, I have my favorites obviously, but I'm glad all of their characters were created because they all add something fun to the dynamic. Hating on one character for specific writing someone did is just wasting your energy. "Canon" isn't real at this point, so you might as well just pick you're favorite bits and ignore what you don't like, because getting mad at it doesn't do anything but fuel anger that won't do anything.
And btw, I do not hate people who dislike Damian, that's not what my comment is meant for, so please do not think I'm upset at people for their personal opinion. I'm just frustrated I find more hate on his character than anything more interesting when I'm looking up stuff about Damian's character, tbh.
Enjoying these characters is supposed to be fun and a break from sad and boring reality, let it be fun for yourself!

The thing about Damian Wayne (to me, anyway!) Is that his character only really works when the other major Robins were there first. Dick, in particular, is extremely important to Damian's characterization, because it's not Bruce who managed to get through to him and encourage Damian to be kind, it was DICK!
Dick is essential to Damian's character growth because he is the driving force behind Damian _choosing_ to be good. Because Dick was angry and vengeful once, but then he found himself a support system (outside of Bruce's largely unhelpful ass. love the guy but he's like a solid C parent, and was like a D during Dick's tenure) and grew into someone who chooses to be kind. He's helpful, empathetic, friendly and passionate, both in and out of the mask. Dick's unwavering belief in Damian, and his leading by example, is what finally got Damian's head out of his ass. Damian started to become a true hero because he wanted to do right by Dick. Furthermore, was Dick who softened Batman to a point where he could take on the other Robins; I don't think Damian would have wanted to be Robin to the Batman before Dick.
Jason is important because he is the cautionary tale. Jason is a reflection of what Damian could be - angry, violent and vengeful... or dead. It's easier to sympathize with Damian because we have seen what anger has done to Jason. It makes sense why Bruce is so determined to keep this kid on the right path, even beyond his strong morals, because he has already lost a child to their own anger. To me, Jason is what makes Bruce's dogged faith in Damian more believable, and their relationship so much more meaningful, because Bruce has seen Jason crawl his way back into something resembling heroism, even after everything - so too could Damian.
Tim is the point of contrast. Tim is what Robin should be, the ideals and moral code that Damian lacks. Their conflict, mainly that Damian believes himself to be more worthy of the Robin mantle and thinks very little of Tim, is a driving force of Damian's character as he goes out of his way to one up Tim at every opportunity. And that he's forced to face the fact that he is *wrong* and Tim is/was the superior Robin in all the ways that truly matter is a very juicy internal conflict and turning point for Damian.
Furthermore, going from a friendly, bubbly robin with some shithead tendencies and a strong moral code straight to a spoilt, haughty brat who struggles with not killing just isn't nearly as interesting as watching the progression of Robins beforehand. Plus, it robs Dick of some really important characterization regarding the other two robins - Jason's replacement of him as Robin and subsequent death are two very important turning points in his character, and his experience with Tim is what allows him to handle Damian in the first place.
Also Damian and Stephanie have a really fun dynamic, I like when they're together. She's not really foundational to his character but I wanted to mention her because I think she's neat. Also him and Cass are great together! If he's going to be with any Bat other than Bruce going forward, I think she's a great choice. I've seen the idea of him becoming Nightwing's sidekick rolling around, and I'm not completely against it, but I would really like to see him and Cass together.

Yes, thank you! His entire character was written specifically for the scenario of Dick being his Batman, and him needing Dick's warmth to overcome his own darkness. Just like Bruce did! The idea of Bruce being able to heal this damaged child is absurd. It does such a disservice to Damian as a character, and Dick's entire purpose in Bruce's life, ffs. Awful decision by the writers here.

I'm not going to lie: I was a Tim stan. Dare I say, Tim Drake is the Wally West of Robins: Gave fans a majority of the things they like about the character (lore, personality, costume, etc.) but every future and past person who has the mantle afterwards keep borrowing from them to the point the audience doesn't remember where the origin point was. Great example: Jason died in the Robin suit with the short-shorts and little boots. When Time officially became Robin, he was the first Robin to have darker colors, his own arsenal, and of course, pants. Jason dying in the old Robin costume also symbolized the death of what Robin used to be. Future adaptations and reboots, however, retconned all the earlier Robins having costumes similar to Tim's, lessening the importance of Tim taking up the mantle.

To be fair, Injustice was when Damien was truly introduce to the mainstream DC normie audience - which did not leave a good impression about him on fans. My biggest gripe with Damian as Robin even tho I love him is that sometimes it just doesn’t make sense timeline wise. Like how is Damian Robin and Barbra is his batgirl counterpart when it should be stef in my opinion. Not only is it erasing other robins but batgirls too.

Barbara is not his batgirl counterpart😂. His Batgirl is Stephanie.
Its stupid to blame Damian for that batgirls when its clear he has nothing to do with it. Its just Dc's obsession with regressing Barbara and keeping her as Batgirl instead of letting her be Oracle.

Tim's my favorite, but I acknowledge he'll never be featured in live action. I think I've heard comics creators say how difficult it is explaining to today's audiences how Bruce Wayne keeps acquiring young boys to fight crime.
Saying Dick's his adopted son? That works. Saying Batman has a son? That works. Saying Batman found a kid on the streets or his neighbor's son just shows up on his doorstep and decides to train them to fight crime? Harder for audiences to buy. I get that it's comics and I'm cool with it, but movie crowds probably won't get it. It sucks.

    1. MORDRED Prince of Camelot forever torn between his father King Arthur ( Batman ) and
his mother Morgana La Fey (Talia ).
    2. OCTAVIAN CAESAR, the heir of Julius Caesar ( Ras Al Ghul ) and the son of his grand niece
Atia Of The Julii ( Talia ).

Damian did have development over the years. And DC and WB really pushed him to be the main Robin.
Wish Jon Kent have all that growth and development but nah, Bendis and Tom Taylor got their hands on Jon.
But Battle of the Super Son was a good movie.
0:57 I read this comic call Robins by Tim Seeley. There was a hypothetical/what-if-scenario, of what if Batman’s Robins didn’t meet Batman. If Damian Wayne never met Batman, he’ll become a peaceful Monk. Does that make any sense? If Damian Never met Batman he would mostly like become Ra’s Al Ghul’s successor and new leader of league of Shadow. The Bat family gave Damian a moral compass.
7:31 Yeah The Teen Titans were trapped in the Phantom Zone but injustice 2 issue 37, Batman and Plastic Man helped the titans escape. But Sadly after they escaped. Tim was murdered by Zod. That really sucks. But it was cool that Connor took up the Superman mantle. I think Connor and Cassie went into the future with Legion of Superheroes.
6:36 I hate Teen Jon Kent more than Injustice Damian. The last interaction that Teen Jon had with Damian, Teen Jon said go back to Alfred. *This dumb mother-f*¢ker doesn’t know Alfred is dead in Injustice universe at that time.* Alfred was revive until Injustice 2 comics by Damian.
Remember Adventure of Jon Kent takes place before the first Injustice video game. It Most likely take place between Injustice year 4 and year 5 comics.
So After Jon told Damian to go see Alfred but Damian didn’t do that until he and Superman regime lost? And Damian is still loyal to Superman’s Regime.
    Teen Jon Kent is stupid.
7:12 True. And Cassandra didn’t get adaptions until that birds of prey movie, but kid is only Cassandra by Name nothing else.
I blame WB have their put their *over-reliance* on Barbara Gordon. Thus making Barbara Gordon an overrated character. It is true.

Damien works great as a dynamic character. He starts as an annoying brat, who then can go through a character arc to become a hero, shedding his flaws. But when the storytelling is put in the hands of a corporation instead of a good storyteller, they just amalgamate all of their qualities regardless of place in the arc and you end up with all of the skills and status of their final version mixed up with all of the negative qualities they were supposed to have overcome to earn those skills and status

  • @CLDJ227
    @CLDJ227 7 месяцев назад

Thank you 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 😎. I can't help but agree with everything you've said here.
The dcmu was also my introduction to Damian, and he ranges from tolerable like in Bat Blood to insufferable like Justice League vs Teen Titans.
It would be one thing if we are supposed to dislike the character. However, those dcmu movies feel like they want you to like him and see his growth, but I feel like that growth never really came despite me waiting for it.
In addition, when people defend this character they either do so by mentioning his backstory or finding his behavior cute. To which I and others respond with a resounding: his background explains him but doesn't excuse his actions, and no one IRL would find this behavior cute 🤔.
Therefore, instead of rooting for Damian to become the next Robin we are instead eager to see him get his face blown off by blue beetle or get his butt whooped by Deathstroke.
Lastly, you brought up Injustice and honestly the animated film version is where I actually like Damian. There he regrets killing Nightwing accidentally and shows a lot more respect to his father and is likable. Similarly, I found him likable in Batman vs Ninja Turtles where they balance him being a kid and a warrior well.
Those examples show that this character can be done right, as opposed to versions like the injustice 2 game where you don't blame Batman for disowning him. Speaking of which at 4:39 Batman could have easily been like "you weren't an accident, your mother drugged and r*** me to bring you here" 🤨.

I read a fanfiction crossover of Harry Potter\Batman where Harry is related to BOTH Bruce Wayne AND Tony Stark and after discovering his relation to them, sends both a letter asking for help to get him out of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. In THIS story Nightwing (Dick Grayson) AND the other three kids Bruce had, yes including Damian lived together as a family. The boys working together (along with Peter Parker) even easily came to the conclusion Harry was being abused. Even though the story wasn't and still isn't finished it was great watching then work together in their own way and keeping roughly with their personalities (Damian went about things more roughly-like a bull in a china store-than the others) to try and find out what he was hiding and try and 'make friends' with him.

I clearly had something confused because I was pretty sure Dick was Robin in more than the DCAU, Teen Titans, and Young Justice... but it obviously wasn't the DCAMU. Anyway, he's still my favorite ROBIN AND I like him as Nightwing.
Someone was saying in a Robin Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions video that almost everyone's favorite Robin was Tim. Doesn't matter if you prefer Nightwing as a character, you probably like Tim as Robin most. And I was trying to say how that really wasn't true since I'm basically an animation fan, not a comic fan, and basically every Robin I like was Dick. (Or a bit of a composite, like you could argue Teen Titans Robin was, since he used Tim's no staff, and arguably kinda became Red Hood (Red X) like Jason for a bit. (I can't quite remember but Red X may have been a thing before Jason Red Hood was?)
Anyway, regardless, he becomes Nightwing. He's Dick. Dick is my favorite Robin.

DC doesn't know what that want to do with Tim. Because everything that made Tim special and standout, they gave it to Damian. Tim was Robin, now it's Damian. Tim had the BEST relationship with Superboy. They made Jon Kent and gave it to Damian. They took away Tim's identity of "Red Robin" but didn't give him anything else to grow into/replace it with. Now all Tim has is being the one dating a boy. And thats not much to go off of in terms of making an interesting character that people want to read

Contrary to popular belief, Jason was actually pretty well-adjusted. He really only lost his cool a couple times during his run. The first was with Two-Face, who he recently learned murdered his father. And the second was when a serial rapist got off scot-free due to diplomatic immunity and tormented his victim into taking her own life just for kicks.
