Best dialogue in the movie. Xavier: "Erik. They're just following orders." Erik: "I've been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again.". Relevant today, as well.
No doubt...
Charles making excuses for men under orders like the Nazis did in their extermination of the Jews. Charles actual called there actions innocent: not a shinning moment for Charles; a flawed Charles as is Magneto.
It’s crazy. Orders are a military law as long as they’re done within reason. Any immoral orders can be disregarded based on the articles of war which you’re not bound to obey. But if your superior officer insists, he can simply take over command of your unit to make them do more immoral acts while you’re suspended & for any gov’t to act takes time for anything. You have process more paperwork & connect with the right people to help sort out such issues. While all that takes time, your soldiers are already doing horrible things. Imagine they’ve done actions but the a-hole leader is held accountable as much as the men who are under him. Worst case scenario, they can render punishment on their soldiers under wartime law & possibility of giving a made up excuse for good soldiers to be shot before ever returning home.
If you were a good officer leading the men you trained with from bootcamp. Would you & your unit not take part when given an immoral order by your commanding officer while on the field? Would do it in order to remain loyal to your unit & these young soldiers are better of being led by you than your commanding officer? Or you wouldn’t & leave your men under a a-hole officer but the men you owe your freedom to as well as theirs given that they volunteered to be a soldier. Again, your CO can suspend you from current position until all is processed & sorted to court. Who knows, maybe half of them would be dead or imprisoned cuz a madman is leading compared to you who could prevent or minimize those risks.
Best example for this. Watch Glory (1990). Few well known actors are in it.
I mean Erik and Charles are the mutant Malcolm X and MLK, and they always have been IMO. Their struggles will always be relevant to society as long as there are different groups of people.
The scene with Charles helping Erik expand his powers by retrieving a memory of Erik & his mother is so freaking powerful. Michael Fassbender is unbelievable in this role.

Erik’s life is a sad story.
No matter your thoughts about all of the First Class movie series (when Charles and Erik are younger), I don't think anyone can deny that the casting choices were perfect!
Magneto is motivated by more than vengeance. He's a Holocaust survivor and is going to do everything he can to prevent mutants from the same fate as the Jews.

Magneto may be a villain, but his motives are understandable. He's not evil for the sake of being evil. He sums it up very well when he says, "I've been at the mercy of men following orders. Never again."

The scene of Erik pushing the coin thru Shaws head and you go back and forth from Shaw and Charles with the music gives me chills every time.

The pain Charles is feeling yet he doesn't release Shaw is what gets me.
When Mystique 'ages up' to appeal to Magneto... that is Rebecca Romijn... the original Mystique from the earlier X-men movies.

The reason why the coin killed Shaw was not because Charles took away Shaw's powers. It was because Magneto reduced the kinetic energy of the coin to close to zero by moving it at such a slow pace. Had he moved it at a fast pace, Shaw would have absorbed the kinetic energy and the coin would just bounce off of his skin. That's why bullets didn't affect him. And that's also why Shaw's death is probably the coolest of any death in any superhero movie ever.
This was one of my favorite concepts. I love the backstory on Charles, Eric and Mystique.
Magneto is not planting cult leader vibes. It's how he really feels. You should be okay being yourself. Pretending to be someone you're not for others isn't great.

So Azazeal is nightcrawlers father (if the teleportung and tail werent a giveaway. Also mystique is his mother somehow (shes also rogues mother) and alex summers/havok is cyclops brother

The old Stryker in this film is the father of the Stryker you know from the prior films.
Alex Summers (Havok) is the older brother of Scott Summers (Cyclops). Both have the ability to fire kinetic blasts, but Havok's is much harder to control, hence his moniker.
Angel Salvadore is known in the comics as Tempest, and is in a much later timeframe than this, but her powers are pretty much similar to her comic version. She also eats her food like a fly, vomiting on it and letting it dissolve before slurping it up. The ACTUAL X-Man codenamed Angel is Warren Worthington III, who WAS one of the founding members of the X-Men in this timeframe. Why the studio swapped him for her is beyond me.

We all loved the way they rebooted this awesome franchise and the great ensemble of actors they got to ''replace,, the originals, not to mention the way they explained the relationships between characters. 👍
What I like about these movies is how powerful they depict the higher tier mutants being.

To me, the beauty of the First Class series is how they tie it to historical events. I guess it means so much because I lived through them, but also because I've followed the X-Men since issue #7, the first Marvel comic I purchased off the stand. It doesn't follow the original story line, but it does a great job. The Magneto origin has been fleshed out to be the greatest villain storyline in comics, well deeper than Stan Lee & Jack Kirby's early days. I'm looking forward to the second in this series with you, which apparently you have already watched. Well done, it was a nice ride through my memories.
Alex Summers a.k.a. Havoc is Cyclops' brother, and also since this is the 60s this was decades before Wolverine did that experiment where they put adamantium on his and lost his memories

You guys asked in a previous X-Men movie why they don't ever come down to Georgia, and for this movie, they did. This was filmed in Savannah, its coast was deemed to most closely resemble Cuba's.
I LOVE the relationship between Xavier and Magneto ( ultimate bromance-LOL ) but the kinship between Xavier and Raven was so unexpected,yet so GOOD,they were-BESTIES. LOL. They never did this in the comics either.

Hank is one of the mutants where his mutation accelerates multiple times throughout the course of his life. Originally he just has big feet, Then he becomes a blue ape, and then his face becomes a blue lion.
Yes, although the later changes when he's blue resulted from his own experimentation, not just natural progression of his mutation.
His blue form isn't part of his mutation, not naturally anyway. Like in this movie, that happened due to experimentation.
This was originally going to be a prequel origin story for Magneto, but it was considered to be the origin store of the X MEN, and it's said to be inspired by the STAR WARS prequel trilogy, showing us how Charles and Erik tuned from best friends to sworn enemies.
They are not "sworn enemies". They have differing views, but both ultimately want the best for mutants. And they are still friends, that goes throughout the franchise.

Love this film, kind of acts as a soft reboot for the series introducing new actors to take over these younger versions of beloved characters, minus Wolverine naturally. Heavily inspired by the first X-Men comics during the 1960s with a slightly differant line-up for timeline reasons. In the comics the original team was made up of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. Cyclops during X-Men (2000) was in his twenties or early thirties so he most likely wouldn't of even been born yet during the events of X-Men: First Class. Same goes with Jean Grey also known as Marvel Girl in the original comics, along with Angel and Iceman all young teenagers to adults during the original X-Men films.
Beast who we saw in X-Men: The Last Stand was old enough to be a young adult in the 1960s and plus he just happens to be one of the original X-Men members in the comics. Banshee and Havok were introduced during the late 1960s so they can fit into a 1960s team. But like I said the only reason the other members like Jean, Scott, and Bobby were not featured in this film is simply because of how the original X-Men films feature these characters in their early adulthoods so they simply couldn't of existed yet during the 1960s.
Also just a funny thought but this film released the same year as Captain America: The First Avenger so we had two Marvel period films during the same year. From my understanding this was around the same time they tired to get Hughe Jackman to cameo as Logan in Captain America. Most likely a scene of Logan fighting alongside Captain America, even if he didn't use his claws and just fought with a gun we would've still known it was Logan from his iconic facial hair, Referring to characters as Bub, and of course being called Howlett, Logan's surname with his full name being James Howlett. And the biggest clue being the fact Jackman is playing him and that he 100% looks and sounds like Logan from the X-Men films.
The teleporter Azazel and mystique are the parents to night crawler. The character from X2 United film. Alex Summers is the brother of Scott Summers AKA cyclops. Both Scott and Alex Powers aren't lasers there are dimensional energy from another universe. In fact my theory it's a similar energy to the sling Rings sorcerer used in the MCU. The stryker in this movie was William Stryker father not the Stryker who experimented on wolverine or the mutant telepath Jason Stryker from X2 United.

Alex is also the younger brother in the comics, but they made him the older brother in the movies because we hadn't seen him yet.
grew up watching it and love them all except for the more recent ones also when he says h can't feel his legs it hits hard and even though i no longer cry for some reason still pulls on the heart stings
Yeah, let's go! First Class is my favorite of the newer X-Men movies with Fassbender and McAvoy.... they're both so awesome as younger Charles & Erik.
There are some conflicts in the history between the two trilogies though. For example, remember in X3 there was a flashback of Xavier and Magento traveling together to recruit Jean Grey as a young girl- and Charles could still walk. And the whole childhood friendship with Mystique doesn't fit their (lack of) relationship in the older movies.
Even through they'd gone their separate ways, would she be willing to sabotage Cerebro and risk killing Charles or giving him permanent brain damage? That plus Mystique and Charles never said a word to each other in X1 through X3. And of course Hank being the inventor of Cerebro instead of Charles & Erik. But all in all, we just overlook these inconsistencies and enjoy the movies...

This is DEFINITELY one of my favorites in the X- Men franchise. 52:05 Alex Somers is Scott's older brother. You can tell from the similarities in their powers involving red lasers. Emma Frost was supposed to be Kayla's sister from "Origins: Wolverine", but they messed up the timeline a little. 55:06 i have my notification bell on for you guys!

I like the older movies but these ones are far much better. The next one will probably be your favorite. Y'all should give the 90s X-Men cartoon series a viewing. Not to upload it on here or anything if you don't want, but to watch and see how awesome they were. It does some of the comics stuff correctly like the Phoenix Saga. They were well written and well voiced by talented VO.

You have to remember that what’s you’re seeing in these films was retrofitted around the later films. Most of it is not canon in the comics. They’ve tried to do their best to make it all work.

Alex is Cyclops's older brother. The devil creature and Mystique are Nightcrawler's parents. That's why he is blue and can teleport.
In the Cyclops is the older brother, Alex is the middle brother. A third Summers brother, Gabriel, was revealed a few years ago. This was changed for this movie. Also recently in the comics, they changed Nightcrawler's parentage.

In the comics, Moira McTaggert was an ally of the X-Men, she was based on an island where they did research and stuff, and she was always helping the X-men so that's where she comes from. She does come back in future movies too.
Also, not sure if you picked up on it but Alex Summers has the same last name as Cyclops (Scott) so that's something that might come up in a future movie.
Fox Studios were originally gonna make more X-Men Origins movies and they were gonna do Magneto as one of them, but they scratched that idea, so a lot of his Origin story got folded up into this movie's plot, and they turned out to be some of th BEST scenes in this movie. I love the idea of Magneto: Nazi Hunter as a movie on its own. Would be fun.

I've seen people mention that Nightcrawler is the son of Azazel and Mystique. Eventhough he has characteristics of both, he isn't. Mystique is his father, which also makes him Rogue's brother. Mystique transformed into a guy and had s3x with another female mutant, Nightcrawler was the result.
This is my favorite of the X-men franchise.
The Stryker in the War Room is the father of (later) Colonel William Stryker. They are not meant to be the same character.

In my opinion... this movie revived the franchise.

Random, but guy at 5:49 was Randall Tarly on Game Of Thrones. This was my second time “watching” First Class, so it was interesting picking up on new things this time around. It’s not my favourite of the franchise, but I loved the addition of Alex Summers (Scott/Cyclops brother) and also Cassidy/Banshee the screaming boy, who is (in the Marvel Universe) the father of Siryn from X-Men 2 (the girl who siren screams the mansion awake during the attack by William Stryker. I enjoyed the film for what it is, but in my personal opinion as cute and adorable as the interaction with young Mystique and Charles was, I preferred Mystique with a more ambiguous, or dare I say…”Mysterious” background, I would rather had her backstory remain more anonymous if that makes any sense. Also I wasn’t a fan of Jennifer as Mystique. I think Rebecca Romijn just naturally embodied everything about Mystique, as if the character was created for her. The acting otherwise was on point from all the cast. Great reaction guys! New subscriber here 😁🙌🏼

A fun timeline
One of the things about this movie that made me so annoyed is that the guy who can adapt to anything should never have died! Like his powers are insane and to have him nerfed like that doesn’t make sense

They did Darwin so dirty in this movie. Darwin is way more powerful in the comics. During an event called world war hulk ,Darwin was one of the X-Men who heeded the call for help when Hulk came to the Xavier Institute. While fighting the Hulk he evolved the ability to absorb gamma radiation. Darwin attempted to absorb gamma radiation from the Hulk only to find that the Hulk's gamma radiation supply was far more than he could drain. His body then determined the best way to confront the Hulk was to not confront the Hulk at all, and Darwin gained teleportation powers which promptly teleported him out of the Hulk's path of destruction. He's perfectly capable of adapting to absorb energy
