@@MelbaMakes I do have a favorite. I had my mother’s china for years with no way to display it and hutches didn’t seem really current. But I found one on Facebook marketplace place that caught my eye so I had to have it. It was a mission style hutch with some leaded glass diamond shapes in the doors, plus it was lighted with a mirrored back. As it was, it wasn’t modern enough so I painted it with a dark blue mineral paint and it is a huge feature of the room. I absolutely love it and my mother’s china looks beautiful displayed inside along with many of my other treasures. In some homes it might seem old fashion but with an updated finish it looks great in my eclectic space and gives me such joy.

I like the new layout, I liked the old layout, I love the dutch door. The hutch between the plant and the curtain looks forced to fit into that one little corner of the room and looks very linear. Try centering the hutch in between the wall and where the curtain naturally hangs. Maybe the plant can be moved in front of the hutch a bit, or on the other side of the hutch or chair? I do like how you used the sewing table as a furniture piece. Hanging the blanket off the back of the sofa will help ground the sofa in the room better since there is nothing behind it. Cozy room

@susanmulvey6311 my friend tried those for her kitty! I think she had some success with them. Moving the pictures higher made a big difference in terms of the room feeling less cluttered. Also, especially for now when you are using half of the room for storage, the sofa helps to block off that view. I think I still preferred when the sofa was against the first wall but think this looks great. I wonder if you will at any time put a TV in this space. I think having a family room without a TV is unusual for most people.

Oh and I 100% feel you about the cat, I remodeled my living room and dining room a few months ago, all my furniture looks good except for one accent chair that my cat took over, the poor chair is all scratched, strings hanging out and all, but my cat loves it so I've been dealing with it. Get clear double sided 2-inch wide sticky tape and put it on your furniture where the cats like to scratch. Cats hate it and won’t scratch it and after a few weeks you can remove it, because they will be out of the habit of scratching in those places. They like to scratch on furniture because it is sturdy and doesn’t move, so buy them a very heavy scratching post or just put low pile carpet on a couple 4’ long 2x4’s and mount them on the wall in a place that seeing them won’t bother you. They will usually start scratching there instead of the furniture with the sticky tape.

Melba, heavy duty clear packing tape is your best friend as a cat scratching deterrent. I have had an unnumbered army (so it seems) of cats over several decades, and after MUCH research, trial, and error, that is what I found to be must effective and least destructive. I feel strongly about the whole declawing topic and as they are not allowed out of the back fenced in yard, they do not need the defensive murder-claws. The tape does no lasting harm and if by some chance residue remains, rubbing alcohol take it off.

Glad you found an option that has worked well for your kitties over the years and your furniture items!

We puddle our window treatments; we also put at least one curtain hook to the outside of the rod bracket, extending the width of the window visually. Don't hem anything until you're absolutely sure of your design choice. Congrats on the Necchi machine; that's a workhorse brand!!! As for cats vs furniture; guess I'm not an animal-minded person willing to put up with damage. Maybe have the cat de-clawed??? Blessings!

I much prefer the original layout with the sofa against the left wall. To me, to new arrangement makes the room look closed off and crowded.
If you want sheers, I'd say to get the dual curtain rod.
My cat clawed a gigantic, gaping crater in my sofa before I gave in and declawed her. Even years after being declawed, she still "scratches" at all the same places that she damaged before. She's got a compulsion.

I have an 8-foot window, actually 3 windows together. I put a tension rod inside my window frame for my sheers. A basic plain white one as the sheers are off white and it barely shows. My main curtain rod is very attractive. It is done in a rustic bronze with flur de'lis finials, but it is the only one that is noticeable. You could do the same thing if a tension rod is impossible. Mount it slightly below and an inch of so inside your main curtain rod. Your main rod should hide it. Do the same thing. Keep it plain and simple. The least expensive that will do the job as it won't be seen anyway.
