    Nowadays, many people don't even wear bowties, and, if they do, they are probably pre-tied, thank you Kirby for teaching the youth about how to dress well.

      One of the things I firmly believe is that dressing well is actually easy. Modern day fashion (which sells a lie) makes it to seem hard.

    Wish I had this when I learned to tie a bow tie in the pre-internet era. I had to rely on a card with illustrations on it that Nordstrom's generously provided with the tie. I got good at it though. When I was a law clerk the judges used to marvel at my ability to un-tie and re-tie the bow tie without looking in a mirror. It was a like a magic trick! Great video.

      Funny you mention this. When I went to college in the early 2000’s, RUclips didn’t even exist yet. In an effort to try to learn how to tie a proper bow tie, I went to the local menswear store. The sales rep only knew how to tie a bow tie on his thigh -he had actually never tied one around his own neck. Needless to say, that wasn’t helpful. Finally, after searching on the internet (who know what I even used to search - aol? Yahoo?), I found a video on a website of some small northeastern liberal arts college by the college President who was known for his bow ties. Without that video, I would have never learned. Happy to pay that gift forward here on this RUclips channel. Everything is so much easier these days!

      @@kirbyallison hahaha I was just messing with you! You have one of the best cigar channels I very much enjoy your all your videos! Literally everything you do. And I noticed episode 5 of your Cuba trip released! Congratulations! I'm Very excited! I have also been snooping around you website, looking at cutters.. not sure what it's called but you put the cigar in the top and it has handles you squeeze, Very stylish. DuPont lights are way kewl as well, but I think I'd have to save for that one.
      Well cheers to you and Happy new Year, I wish the best for you and yours. Have a cigar for me and I will you, relax and burn easy my friend.

    In short, Tying a bow tie is the same as tying shoe laces, just with shorter ends. It can be a bit tricky to get one end through the loop, and it will look a bit messy, but a few adjustments and it should be good!
    I really wanted to get a proper bow tie instead of a neck tie for my first suit, but had to go around the whole city without luck. They just sold pre tied ones. Even the more higher end stores in my area.

    Kirby, do you not feel a shawl collar is proper black tie attire? 😮
    BTW, this trick of putting your finger through the back of the knot is a great one! Can't wait to have an occasion to get the tuxedo out and try it!

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you! For “proper” black tie - aka the “standard” - peak lapel is the only way to go.

      There's nothing wrong with a shawl collar for a dinner suit, though it is less formal than the peak lapel. Shawl collars are perhaps a better option for the less formal dinner jacket in velvet

    • @DavidKasan
      @DavidKasan 9 месяцев назад

      @@kirbyallison Am I correct that shawl collars are for dinner jackets and smoking jackets, but not formal? Not sure where I came to that distinction.

    • @bheinatz1
      @bheinatz1 9 месяцев назад

      @@kirbyallison while a peak lapel may be a tad more formal than the shawl, the shawl cannot be labeled improper. If anything, black tie is one of the very few opportunities one has to wear a shawl collar; albeit, the same could be said about the seldom opportunities of wearing a peak lapel on a single-breasted jacket (unless one wears a lot of Tom Ford! 😉).
      I must kindly object to tossing us shawl collar guys into the trash heap of improper. We are a tad less formal, yes, but a bit more easy going! Some might even say we are (ahem...) more stylish...😁 Let's not forget, if our aim is the peak of formality, we'd be wearing white tie, right?
