When handled by capable writers, she seems very much like a satirical take on the idealized 1950s mother/wife.

The Simpsons as a whole was conceived as ‘the 1950s American idyll gone a bit wrong’. The essence of the early seasons was taking nostalgic tropes and twisting them. One of those tropes being the typical submissive suburban housewife. I think the show’s decline is partly attributable to that early idea being forgotten, and Marge is the character who has suffered the most in that regard. What she signifies is now ludicrously out of date.
