4K UHD YEAR IN REVIEW inc. TOP TEN of 2022

  • This is the 100th MOVIE COLLECTOR upload and is an extensive look at the 4K UHD disc releases of 2022 including many of those I haven't seen to make it a more complete round-up of the year than it otherwise would have been. I detail many of the 4K discs released in 2022 that I've seen and then give a run down of my ten best picks which are bound to be different to just about everyone else and sure to cause some consternation with some. I have selected these ten best based on the overall package rather than which has the better image and/or sound quality, but image and sound do still have a bearing because if I thought either were not up to scratch, then they wouldn't feature in the ten best.

I actually knocked that one out comparatively quickly. Last year was a good year for 4K disc releases but this year hasn't matched it by a long way so far. Let's hope it improves otherwise I'm going to find it hard repeating the process. I think most of the really good 4K discs I've seen first appeared on the format last year or even the year before. I think the Changeling is the best overall package so far for 2023.

I look forward to an even better 2023 slate of films (the Rocky films, The Exorcist, The Abyss, and the 100th anniversary of King Kong, to name a few) and continued improvements in the technology for the best possible home presentations. Thank you Joe. It's difficult to see how home video could get much better now but little upticks here and there with video projection in particular could improve things a little further. There's never been a better time for home cinema... except perhaps the exciting days when Super 8 was relaunched in the 1980's with previously unimaginable print quality and in 'Scope and stereo sound where applicable. Although, much of the stereo sound on Super 8 doesn't exactly rival what was being offered on Laser Vision and VHS at the time. John.

Super 8 is something I grew up with so all the little foibles that come with that tiny gauge have always been part of its charm but when you see a top-notch print and know just how good it can be it is a bit of a revelation. The plan is to put some extracts from good prints on at the BFCC on April 29th and if all goes to plan, some 35mm too and hopefully 4K video projection.

Oh, and I am grateful to you for having given me a heads-up for the Get Carter release; I may be from across the pond but I've always loved the movie. Last Night In Soho surely has all the requisite hallmarks of a cult movie so it will be interesting to see if it does enter cult status as the years go on. I've seen most today and just got around to yours and glad I did, as the "save the best for last" worked out. I enjoyed all the reviewers but this video stood out as the best for its overall quality. I agree. Most of these 4K discs have achieved the apparent look of film and I never would have thought that was possible with video. If manufacturers of video cameras and video projectors now work out how to put shutters in their products then I think even video projection in cinemas will achieve the impossible and be as natural as film projection and easier on our eyes. I might even go back to regular cinema outings if that happens because at the moment I feel like I need to wear sunglasses with most cinema video projections.

A happy new year to you and your loved ones too Colum. When it comes to home video most of us have only ever known video in the home and so have got used to the low contrast transfers we've had up to the arrival of 4K. Film has always looked different but now that video equipment can replicate the look of a film we suddenly have to get used to these increased density images and sometimes make the mistake of comparing a dense 4K to a previous VHS, DVD or Blu-ray transferred from a low contrast print. Basically, I think 4K tends to be darker just like a film.

As a major fan of that film, I really appreciated the nods to that underrated film. The soundtrack helped underscore beautifully. The IMAX shots of Bond’s arrival in Matera, Italy were sublime. I don't know if you're familiar with this type of surround sound, but during the commentary of Apocalypse Now Francis Ford Coppola discusses something called Sensesurround (or Sensurround). It was developed by Universal Studios and what it added to the film was the ability to feel the film, sort of what they do in DBOX theaters. You feel the explosions and loud noises in your seat. The seats themselves don't move but there were speakers under the seats. He was offered this for Apocalypse Now but turned it down since they would take a percentage of the profits for the use of the technology.
Francis Ford Coppola said that they made their own version for Apocalypse during its original theatrical run. I'm not sure how many theaters ran with it but it sounded like an experience.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Год назад +2

Earthquake and Battlestar Galactica are the two films I always think of when I think of Sensurround. It was a deep bass addition and the soundtrack on the film had air pockets in it somehow (if I recall correctly) that boosted the bass to make a cinema shake. Few cinemas went for the system and I never saw a film in Sensurround but I expect modern subwoofers are producing similar or better results today. Maybe others who know more than I will chime in here. There was an article all about Sensurround in Cinema Retro magazine a few years ago.

There are a few I haven’t seen and probably won’t either, just due to cost and having to be picky on the films we buy.
I loved Heat, and while dark I didn’t find it as bad as some people and was happy with the image.
Dune was a little troubling on UHD compared to how I remembered it at the cinema, however I still found it watchable and it didn’t take anything away from the experience.
Robocop was a good release and as it’s a film I love from my childhood I’m more than happy with its transfer.
I’ve recently got around to watching The Batman on UHD and loved every second. I’d already seen the film but I found the transfer to be exceptional, especially on OLED.
We’ve recently just picked up Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Tenet & Interstellar up along with the 5 film set of Daniel Craig’s James Bond films. These take us up to 115 UHD films.
2023 promises some big releases from James Cameron (if the rumours are to be believed) and hopefully some other great films to see in cinemas.

The most important thing we all have to do is to support any physical shops that still sell them and that should help to ensure the market survives for many years to come. I should say the same for cinema but after the big downgrade in 2011 it's hard to recommend going to see sub-standard quality. This is why film is making a bit of a comeback and some cinemas are putting prints of classic films in to screen to try to generate a bit of box office to help stem the tide of the inevitable.

I have to hope they carry on making players for the next couple of decades.

@@jedlomax100 If you think about it Stu, with around half of all cinema screens in the UK projecting 2K video until recently (might still be almost half today) I think that confirms that there is little perceptible difference between 4K and Blu-ray on our tiny home screens. 8K seems like another marketing ploy to get us to stick our existing equipment in landfill and purchase the same thing all over again. HDR is what has made the big difference and if it had have been applied to Blu-ray then we wouldn't have needed 4K for the home... unless you have a 40 foot wide screen perhaps. John.

So just gonna say for this year all the best and thanks so much for these fine works and will say you've led me to some great pick ups and helped me avoid some as well. Also of note from this yr I want to thank you for introducing me and others to Trevor from Double Bill Movies who I've been following and learning from I'd think his channel could grow with the knowledge and experience he has and love of movies. So out on a limb here but wanted to get that in as well being that here is probably the only forum to say that. Hoping it's not to tacky to add but damn its done already lol Cheers for now D in BC!!

Good to hear from you again Dave and thank you for commenting on so many videos this year. I think this channel has done okay because so many movie enthusiasts comment on here and you're one of them. Trevor's great and he's actually looking at getting some new equipment in the near future which should give him the possibility of more complicated videos which should help his reach to grow.
Blow Out is near the top of my list but has been for a while. I went onto WowHD to finally get it about six weeks ago but they'd sold out. I must have another look but every other dealer I've seen has it for considerably more money so it might have to wait a while yet.

There were really some great releases on 4K and Blu-ray this year. Thanks for the great video highlighting many of them! I have the Top Gun: Maverick 4K steelbook which I really loved, and which I got for Christmas and watched for the third time finally on disc. It was such a great release! I plan to wait for Dune once the new one is out on disc as I hope to pick up a complete Dune set if they do well with Part 2. I loved the first one, for sure. I quite enjoyed a number of those others that you mentioned, as well. We Iaughed a lot with The Lost City, so I was glad to hear you mention it, and I actually had fun with the last Jurassic film, as well (it doesn't touch Jurassic Park, or even Jurassic World, for me, but I liked it as well as the other sequels and enjoyed seeing the casts of both trilogies interacting). I got the No Way Home 4K steel on reprint, though I haven't gone back to watch that one yet. Several of my favorite classic films had 4K releases this past year, including two all-time favorites, Singin' in the Rain (which I got for mom for her birthday) and Casablanca. Both looked and sounded fantastic. A few other favorites that I watched the new releases of last year included Kino's editions of The Great Escape and Eastern Promises; the 4K steelbooks of Fright Night, The Untouchables, and The Hurt Locker; 1776; and Drive (the 1997 one from 88 Films). I also picked up some other favorite films on 4K that I haven't watched the new discs of yet but that I am really looking forward to checking out, including True Romance, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The Return of the Living Dead, Hard Target, and Cloak & Dagger. It really was a terrific year for film fans!

I would love to see you feature that Laserdisc sometime, as I really do like the look of a lot of the Laserdisc packages, and I enjoy when you show some of them, as well as some of the other types of film releases you have. I do love The Untouchables. I got that steel book for my birthday last summer, and I really dig the design of it. Most important, of course, the film itself looked and sounded wonderful.

Great video John. I heard you mention Silent Running. I will be excited to see this movie come out in 4K. i have seen this movie on TV back in the early 70s. Then I so it on VHS, DVD the Blu Ray. This movie for as low budget as it was and simple it was and the music does date the movie to 70's but for me it is just a movie I have seen so many times I just enjoy the movie so much. Bruce Dern's performance I have always been impressed with. Also the Shaky Cam is something that really bothers me and I have actually turned off a movie because it it.

John Thank you for an excellent summation of the years highlights. Surprised at how many of these I actually own much to my bank managers disgust. Recently went from LED to OLED and the difference between the two displays is sometimes quite marked. Loved Ambulance never notice the shaky camera Dune played fine no darker ending HEAT can't understand what the fuss is about. Thought Saturday Night Fever poor. As you are no doubt aware next year is Warner's 100th anniversary they are hinting at releasing a number of 4ks to mark this. Personally I want The Witches of Eastwick colour purple and mars attacks.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Год назад

I suspect that people are basing the look of Saturday Night Fever on previous video releases where it doesn't look particularly like a film but the 4K does. If you want to see how bad shaky cam can be Mike then take a look at Mission Impossible 3 and I dare you to keep your eyes on the screen and make out what is happening whenever any action starts. If you can get through that then nothing will ever be a problem for you. OLED's are a bit like Technicolor so a little fake but that was why we all loved 3 strip Technicolor too. John.

My favourite 4K’s of the year for PQ and SQ
1: Top Gun Maverick (also my fav film along with Everything Everywhere all at Once but that’s not out on 4k in the Uk yet)
    2: Reservoir Dogs
    3: Pulp Fiction
    4: Matrix Resurrections
    5: The Godfather Trilogy
    5: Bullet Train
    6) Edge of Tomorrow
    7) The Batman
    8) Last night in soho
The first 5 make my all time list I think. Of course there are many I’ve not seen and I’ve a few from this year still to catch.

Matrix Resurrections is becoming increasingly intriguing to me because fans of the Matrix series tend to dislike it. I don't class myself as a fan so I suspect I may like it. Bullet Train is one I hadn't considered purchasing but maybe I'll take a fresh look now.

@@TomGur147 The original film didn't really have very good image quality but that was issued around the beginning of the general decline in cinema image quality. If I remember correctly the main issue was around so low quality computer graphics shots that didn't even match up to the quality of the rest of it but because of the fast moving nature of the film they somehow got away with it with most. The latest Matrix movie was shot on a variety of large video formats up to 8K I think so that should be another reason for me to take a look.
