Amazing video! All I can say is that the world was fine before they retired the maddogs
Happens a couple of times a day at SAN when they get stacked up too close or when someone is moving too fast. The joys of a single runway airport.
Yeah R D...It happened to me many moons ago when flying to Gambia and trying to land twice,so we were diverted to Dakar to apparently wait until the runway had cooled down? I kid you not,but that was the excuse that we were given, because the runway was melting!!! 🤣
Now imagine the thumbnail was real. Like the second one passing that low
That would be insane
Good old MD80 👍 Amazing footage!
Gotta love the JT8D!
This is not JT8D
@@samyacoub4858 What is it then?
@@samyacoub4858 yes it is
@@samyacoub4858 A lot of people forget that the versions of the JT8D didn't stop with the -17; there were also the -209 and 219 variants that were on the Mad Dogs..
That was sharp, very very nice. Long live the MD-83s!!
The little boy in the background, super thrilled with all that power: “what the heck!”
Awesome to see this old Mad Dog footage from DCA! Reminds me of watching 99carnot's videos before he passed away... He frequented Gravelly Point
Must've sounded awesome in person. Nice misleading thumbnail !!!
I do know one thing, these trained pilots handled the situation very well. Besides that, it was a joy to see these amazing and beautiful MD's. I do miss seeing them, but at least we got these videos. They really do sound and look amazing. I love it, awesome clip.
Wow that was incredible footage thanku so much love and god bless x
HELLO. THANK YOU.
JP......Fantastic! So much thanks for this video! Have a great
weekend and stay safe;) Lovely greetings.......Betsy.
WOW, good to see someone was on the ball..
I MISS THE MADDOG. Never got to fly in one :(
Maddogs are the best! JT8D power!
-217 that is.
Strong amazing ladies 🙏❤
Captain maybe looked left, but didn't LOOK left.
This wasn't a separation issue. National airport often runs aircraft very tightly, and if the AA MD80 hadn't rejected its takeoff there would have been no issue. ATC instructed the Delta MD80 to go around when the AA rejected. Nobody did anything wrong here.
This is an old one!!
Nice catch
When was this filmed? Delta MD80 has already been retired
So has American’s.
I think this is a Simulator
@@ricardopr54 no this is real. 100%
Wow, that's some old footage. Daft question but as someone that loves planes, I must ask, I assume TCAS doesn't work in this situation? If TCAS existed in the 70's, would that have avoided the Tenerife crash? If 2 transponders talk in the air, surely the same logic would apply on the ground on the ground?
Nice catch gentleman
Where was this?
DCA
@@saxmanb777 ah ok 👍
Was this a near collision (one plane attempting to take off, another attempting to land)? Not sure what happened.
Read the Title , man. Says exactly what you see in the vid...although the thumbnail pic was kind of shamefully misrepresentational.
One doesn't take off....one can't immediately land.
Not that tough to figure it out...
@@garyjohnson1392 Wonderful that you answer so kindly and thoughtfully to a question by someone who is not an expert and cannot clearly discern what the video shows, especially given the title. I could imagine you might work as a teacher, encouraging students and helping them to develop their self-esteem.
What happened, Mario, is that the AA plane taking off didn't anticipate having to reject his/her take off roll. When AA couldn't clear the active runway quickly enough, the Delta crew had to call a go around.
This sort of thing happens a lot and the procedures for a "missed attempt" are always reviewed as part of the flight deck pre-landing briefing that takes place as per standard operating procedures.
FWIW, had the AA aircraft not had to reject its take off, it likely would have cleared the runway (by taking off) in plenty of time for Delta to have landed as per normal.
@@carriestuart9921 Thank you, I appreciate the explanation :) Once I was on a flight about to touch ground that suddenly had to pull off. My heart was beating fast and I was holding my boyfriend's hand because I thought we had almost slammed into another plane, and sure enough, the pilot said that was a close call.
@@mariogoldenuniverse I'm a retired flight attendant of 20 yrs of service. Fortunately, I experienced scant few incidents of this kind, but over my career it did happen a few times.
Usually, it's no big deal. FWIW, it typically more often occurs at airports that don't have twin or parallel runways, and almost routinely during busy hours of operation whenever there are lot of scheduled departures and arrivals.
Bad atc timing ?
No, aborted takeoff...
I have a question gentleman we have an aircraft in the city of Torrance flying around in circles day and night who are these aircrafts and who did they belong to that is my question we have tried calling airport and they give us no answers and they keep on making us go in circles call this number call that number nothing happens so who are these aircrafts by any chance
could be the FAA making sure the glide slope and localizer for a runway are operating correctly. If it is the FAA they could also be testing other NAV aids around your area. Download the app FlightRadar24. With that app, you can see and identify aircraft flying over in real time.

When did this happen? I thought they were all retired from the fleet.
They were, this is an older video.
@@Aurayia2218 Ok. Thank you.
Who misjudged his speed? :)
Nobody
Mind blowing
The abort looked to be not a max effort stop. Thrust reverser buckets looks to have stayed stowed... Might have been able to taxi back and try again without any brake cooling delay..
Who let him run while another is above his head?
Reagan National is an extremely busy airport with a single runway so this is not uncommon
@@jamesvazquez2491 that sounds really dangerous
@@reinhart482 it’s not.
They didn’t. American aborted the takeoff meaning they would occupy the runway too long for the landing traffic. So ATC instructed landing traffic to go around.
He was supposed to take off but he saw something he didn't like and aborted. The Delta was cleared to land figuring the American would have been airborne. Pilots train for these situations
Wow
American MD-80 take-off Delta MD-80 go around.
I thought they retired all these heaps of scrap metal several years ago 🤔
AA did in 2019 and DL a few months ago.
@@saxmanb777 maybe the 73 max groundings and covid changed the dates and pulled
Some back form the bone yards . I know they all wanted them gone several years ago
@@tritontransport No. They didn’t pull any from retirement. AA retired theirs in September 2019 and Delta retired theirs in June 2020. This video is old.
@@saxmanb777 yeah I was wondering the age of the video because it looked quite older than the actual upload date
@@saxmanb777 never was a fan of the mad dogs and don’t miss them. I will miss the 757 rocket ships though
i experienced aborted take off when flying md80. one of the engines stopped during full power and the pilot decided to abort the take off.
