Chickens are fascinating, with various qualities. Oh, that was quite funny seeing Crusoe running away from Phoenix instead of running after them. I thought his reaction to the chickens was so sweet, even looking under the box to see if there was another hole he could see them from. He really is the cutest little boy. Aww can you imagine when they start laying eggs, how happy and amazed Crusoe will be. Chucky eggs and soldiers on the menu then. The hen house looks amazing. Anyway enjoy getting go know your flock. when my daughter was about 6 we had 5 chickens. She named them Flower, Eagle, Spotty, Blackie and Fluff. Then she got a silky who she named Snowflake. Silkies are real broody so we got some fertilised eggs and she hatched one! Turned out to be a Rooster who she named Chicken LIttle. She loved her chickens so much and they would follow her around and come when she called them. Crusoe and Sawyer are going to have so much fun!

These 3 chickens are beautiful!!! But can't they fly? All my chickens could fly and sometimes were on the roof of my shed. Mine always were in the coop with a run with deep grounded chicken wire by night. In the 25 years we had chickens there luckily never was an attack by predators. Still better is a deep grounded double (!) enclosure of chicken wire. Be aware it is not funny specially not for children to see their beloved chicken attacked by a fox or a marten or even by birds of prey, cats or rats. 🥰
Thanks David, we really loved there company, good people, I’m sure you know that. Our thoughts on this are that they made a really great RUclips channel, that’s made them some money and they got a nice house which they are also sharing projects from. I think if we all have some success we likely want to get nicer things, definitely move up from a one room barn. We think that hard work that pays off should be celebrated. Sorry, I'm not going to watch this. I know you're collaborating with these bigger channels to grow your own, but seriously... those of us who have watched the expat communities in Portugal for a long time, know why other off-grid/homestead type people don't associate with them. You could at the very least do your homework first. You are who you choose to hang around with.

We always do our best to provide the best videos we can 2/ Having met Theo and Bee, we can tell you that they are both lovely people to know, fun to be around, always knowledgeable about homesteading 3/ Do our homework, you say this as if we haven’t had YT accounts for very long! We have been following Theo and Bee for years. 4/ We strive so very hard to do the right thing, be friendly and especially above all be kind. Your judgement of people you have only ever seen on YT frightens us. It’s close to the same as us making a judgement on who you are for leaving this comment, we choose not to do this. Aside from all of the above, we would ask you one final question, if you don’t like someone, choose to turn the other cheek, I mean, it’s a YT channel, not a personal assault on you own being. Look after your sled Carolyne, let’s remember to be kind 👍😃

@@TheNewbys you are welcome. I showed my 85yo mum your channel the other week. I think you have a new subscriber. 🤣 She was watching and using RUclips long before I even knew it was a thing. She's quite something. Her dad, my grandfather was an urban permaculturist (back in the 1950/60s), it was his hobby, here in Perth. He pored over lots of old tomes on soil biology and ecology. I remember him doing so, avidly making notes. People laughed at him, scorned him, said it wouldn't work, but he just quietly did his thing. Their back yard food forest was friggin' incredible. It was a wonderful place to spend time as a small child. I was a very curious child and Grandpa spent time showing me how plants and trees grow, how fruit forms, all the creatures that make their home therein and why they were important. They are some of the best memories of my childhood. So when I see Crusoe being Crusoe on the farm and how you let him explore and discover (including in puddles) it brings me a lot of joy. I didn't get to have children because of some life circumstances beyond my control so watching families who let their children grow up in a healthy way (as opposed to infantalising them, helicopter parenting, but still having good boundaries) warms my heart.

You should try a thin layer of straw or dried grass in the coop. Fabric will be very difficult to keep clean. Put the used bedding (straw/grass) in you compost heap. Just be sure that it is very well composted and diluted with other organic matter before you use the compost. Chicken poop is very strong and will burn your plants.
Hello Tara and John, you really are getiing the whole project togehter now- it's a joy to watch you together with the children growing andfullfilling your dreams. My neighbours had 2 sheep, they moved tham around 2 others gardens to kepp the grass short.They didn't mow their grass! The sheep were quite easy to keep and they were sheared by a local farmer, twice a year. Do any of your neighbours have sheep they might like to move onto your land for a spell.

I’m sure your chickens will be much happier at your farm, and it honestly made me a bit sad to see how she handled them at the market, but I know they’re ok. OurHazel looked just like your speckled chicken❤ Just a heads up, please be careful getting the girls close to your faces. Our daughter was holding our very sweet Hazel, but Hazel thought her pupil was a tiny bug, so she pecked our Heather in her eye, and we ended up having to take her to the eye doctor. She got some eye drops, and healed nicely, but it was petty painful for a few days.

What an adventure this Wednesday, just giving me laughs and smiles all around, Crusoe surprised with the hens and the cockrell is even bigger than him, Tara how strong you are with Crusoe loving to play in puddles and mud. Sheep and a lamb good idea it will help with mowing the lawn. I noticed one of the herbs at the market called PIRIPIRI, this is famous in the Portuguese cuisine, here the Portuguese community uses it as a spice ingredient for their famous Portuguese chicken BBQ. I know you will not eat them just to give you an idea of the herbs. Glad Theo and Bea came with PhiPhi. John must make sure the fence has dept in the ground to prohibit foxes from entering under it. Oh, that was quite funny seeing Crusoe running away from Phoenix instead of running after them. I thought his reaction to the chickens was so sweet, even looking under the box to see if there was another hole he could see them from. He really is the cutest little boy. Aww can you imagine when they start laying eggs, how happy and amazed Crusoe will be. Chucky eggs and soldiers on the menu then. The hen house looks amazing. Anyway enjoy getting go know your flock. when my daughter was about 6 we had 5 chickens. She named them Flower, Eagle, Spotty, Blackie and Fluff. Then she got a silky who she named Snowflake. Silkies are real broody so we got some fertilised eggs and she hatched one! Turned out to be a Rooster who she named Chicken LIttle. She loved her chickens so much and they would follow her around and come when she called them. Crusoe and Sawyer are going to have so much fun!

These 3 chickens are beautiful!!! But can't they fly? All my chickens could fly and sometimes were on the roof of my shed. Mine always were in the coop with a run with deep grounded chicken wire by night. In the 25 years we had chickens there luckily never was an attack by predators. Still better is a deep grounded double (!) enclosure of chicken wire. Be aware it is not funny specially not for children to see their beloved chicken attacked by a fox or a marten or even by birds of prey, cats or rats. 🥰

Thanks David, we really loved there company, good people, I’m sure you know that. Our thoughts on this are that they made a really great RUclips channel, that’s made them some money and they got a nice house which they are also sharing projects from. I think if we all have some success we likely want to get nicer things, definitely move up from a one room barn. We think that hard work that pays off should be celebrated. Sorry, I'm not going to watch this. I know you're collaborating with these bigger channels to grow your own, but seriously... those of us who have watched the expat communities in Portugal for a long time, know why other off-grid/homestead type people don't associate with them. You could at the very least do your homework first. You are who you choose to hang around with.
Hi Carolyne, a number of points you have raised as always we are keen to reply.
1/ we collaborate with channels because it’s fun. Currently our channel gets a similar amount of views as the Indie projects, and with out going into to much YT detail this means content over growth is more important. We always do our best to provide the best videos we can
2/ Having met Theo and Bee, we can tell you that they are both lovely people to know, fun to be around, always knowledgeable about homesteading
3/ Do our homework, you say this as if we haven’t had YT accounts for very long! We have been following Theo and Bee for years.
4/ We strive so very hard to do the right thing, be friendly and especially above all be kind. Your judgement of people you have only ever seen on YT frightens us. It’s close to the same as us making a judgement on who you are for leaving this comment, we choose not to do this. Aside from all of the above, we would ask you one final question, if you don’t like someone, choose to turn the other cheek, I mean, it’s a YT channel, not a personal assault on you own being. Look after your sled Carolyne, let’s remember to be kind 👍😃

@@TheNewbys you are welcome. I showed my 85yo mum your channel the other week. I think you have a new subscriber. 🤣 She was watching and using RUclips long before I even knew it was a thing. She's quite something. Her dad, my grandfather was an urban permaculturist (back in the 1950/60s), it was his hobby, here in Perth. He pored over lots of old tomes on soil biology and ecology. I remember him doing so, avidly making notes.
People laughed at him, scorned him, said it wouldn't work, but he just quietly did his thing. Their back yard food forest was friggin' incredible. It was a wonderful place to spend time as a small child. I was a very curious child and Grandpa spent time showing me how plants and trees grow, how fruit forms, all the creatures that make their home therein and why they were important. They are some of the best memories of my childhood. So when I see Crusoe being Crusoe on the farm and how you let him explore and discover (including in puddles) it brings me a lot of joy.
I didn't get to have children because of some life circumstances beyond my control so watching families who let their children grow up in a healthy way (as opposed to infantalising them, helicopter parenting, but still having good boundaries) warms my heart.

You should try a thin layer of straw or dried grass in the coop. Fabric will be very difficult to keep clean. Put the used bedding (straw/grass) in you compost heap. Just be sure that it is very well composted and diluted with other organic matter before you use the compost. Chicken poop is very strong and will burn your plants.

Hello Tara and John, you really are getiing the whole project togehter now- it's a joy to watch you together with the children growing andfullfilling your dreams. My neighbours had 2 sheep, they moved tham around 2 others gardens to kepp the grass short.They didn't mow their grass! The sheep were quite easy to keep and they were sheared by a local farmer, twice a year. Do any of your neighbours have sheep they might like to move onto your land for a spell.

Just a heads up, please be careful getting the girls close to your faces. Our daughter was holding our very sweet Hazel, but Hazel thought her pupil was a tiny bug, so she pecked our Heather in her eye, and we ended up having to take her to the eye doctor. She got some eye drops, and healed nicely, but it was petty painful for a few days.

What an adventure this Wednesday, just giving me laughs and smiles all around, Crusoe surprised with the hens and the cockrell is even bigger than him, Tara how strong you are with Crusoe loving to play in puddles and mud. Sheep and a lamb good idea it will help with mowing the lawn. I noticed one of the herbs at the market called PIRIPIRI, this is famous in the Portuguese cuisine, here the Portuguese community uses it as a spice ingredient for their famous Portuguese chicken BBQ. I know you will not eat them just to give you an idea of the herbs. Glad Theo and Bea came with PhiPhi. John must make sure the fence has dept in the ground to prohibit foxes from entering under it.
