- Ben thought he wanted to be an engineer and took some science courses at college but decided that book learning wasn't for him. He fell in love with hands on work so he switched to Tool and Die and eventually became a machinist. Ben's favourite part of his job is when he comes into work with a big challenge in front of him where you don't even know where to start. He loves finding a way to solve any problem. Nothing is impossible, says Ben in his Job Talk.

I used to be a machinist for a few years. I grew discontent with the job and the pay. On my own time I basically taught myself computer science, the high level mathematics and all. I work as a machine learning engineer now making 3.5x what a did before. I didn't ever look down on the trades but in my opinion they stink. No respect and few are willing to pay what you're worth. Too many people romanticize blue collar jobs. I had enough.
The better trades are the ones you are more important in like electricians or plumbers. The opportunities for those jobs are endless. I know because I am doing a plumbing apprenticeship. After 5 years as a machinist I'm fucking done with the shit pay and the needless stress and constant worry if it's worth doing. I can't be outsourced, I'm marketable, will always have a job and I can actually do work on the side or even do my own business and help people. I'll already have a 30 to 40 percent pay increase. That's what is enticing and ik because I've seen it. There's no other trade I've ever seen more than machining and people always tell me as a young kid, gtfo while your young. Those same people tell me plumbing is definitely what you want to do.
I agree. The money is the #1 reason we do what we do. Gotta pick what feeds your needs and hope you'll want to stick with it for the long haul.
Same story here. Was a machinist for 5 years and never broke over 42,000 a year. Quit and got a job as an engineer and made 2 times the pay with an entry level engineering job.
Trades are great and important. But the money stinks.

Been a cnc machinist for almost 24 years now. Unfortunately I've seen it remain stagnant the bulk of the time I've been in it. Some but not many young guys try it out for 2 or 3 years and get tired of it. A lot of it is repeat, mundane boring stuff unless you are being trained by someone that wants you to learn set ups and programming. Then it gets a little more interesting and the pay will start to go up. If you're okay with 50k standard salary and maybe 70k with O.T. for the year and you're single with no kids you'll live somewhat comfortably. The insurance benefits are so so. Some companies have horrible and that's another big reason guys quit. There's been a nationwide shortage of skilled machinists for decades. The old guys are retiring at a rate that these shops can't keep up. Plus if you're like me you'll find the only really good way to get a decent raise is to quit after 2 years and go to another company at a higher rate and start over with new questionable coworkers behaviors, possibly sketchy management, rivaling engineers and hating coworkers based on skill level. I've seen it all. Been in 15 or so shops in 3 states and they're all the same. Someone ain't gonna like you if they find out you have a couple decades of experience. Especially if you're not kissing ass from day one. All the skills in the world aren't gonna help you if you work with disgruntled people. My advice if you want this type of work. Get some education, get into a smaller shop and get some experience doing everything from button pushing to setting up. Do it for 2 or 3 years and then be prepared to move somewhere where to a very large company like Northrup Gruman or Lockheed Martin and stay there. If there's a union even better if that's your thing. Too much favoritism in small and medium size shops.
I was a machinist for the better part of 20 years...I went through a 3 year apprenticeship at the shop I worked for, and had to master manuals before I ever went on anything CNC, eventually becoming an all-around machinist to the point where the boss gave me a print, pointed to the stock rack and said, "Make it!" Everything from process planning, tools and fixtures, blank roughing, CNC programming, set-up and operation, SPC, even assembly and packaging... By the time my career got outsourced, I was making about $30 an hour... Now they want people to go through an apprenticeship and invest in at least $1000 for the basic first year's assortment of inspection tools and gauges - all for $10 an hour? MAYBE $15 an hour after 3 years into it? Also, there's always the threat of your job being outsourced to Asia just for the dirt cheap labor... Who's gonna put up with all that when you can apply at Costco and make $12 an hour after 3 weeks of training and the probationary first 3 months time? Screw that! If you're gonna be that cheap in the machining trade, you're better off sending it to China anyway!

Amen my friend. One of the things stopping me from becoming a machinist: USELESS PIGS WILL GIVE MY JOB TO SOME HARD WORKING GUY IN ASIA AND WILL FORCE THEM TO WORK IN INHUMANE CONDITIONS FOR 5 PENNIES A DAY. This trade is going to shit cuz of robots and inhumanely cheap manufacturing standards.

One thing I learned as a machinist is be HUMBLE. Don't come off as a know-it-all and take everyone's opinions into consideration. be respectful and tactful about how you handle things.
Hi I have a question if you don't mind so I'm 36 years old and I'm a truck driver and I recently got hit with a couple of those traffic cameras I've never had a ticket and the last five plus years do you think I'm too old she considered moving into this field? Thx

Make videos. That's really just it.
In my opinion, find a single concept and film a few situations that use that concept while explaining it. Those are the videos I love. Look at some machinist channels like abom79, NYC CNC, or titans of cnc to see some examples of channels that do machining. Haas tip of the day does what I'm looking for. Hope for your success!

The company I work for has lost 15 machinists in the last year.
If you’re interested in becoming a Machinist, look for an apprenticeship program or OJT.

I am an actual real cnc machinist. Kids get yous notebooks...
Cnc (operators) aren't as skilled as manual machinists
@@smashyrashy CNC "machinists" do set up as well. Hell some of us even code and manually write our own programs. Manual machining was how it started. Just because someone is a CNC or even a lathe machinist doesn't mean they lack skill. Operators press buttons. Machinists do all the set up including editing and or making the actual program. Are you familiar with any code at all? Requires basic trigonometry and geometry. Yet you talk down as if people who don't run manual machines aren't skilled. I pity you.
