The dynamic between Jimmy and Chuck in my opinion, is the most interesting and fantastic dynamic on TV. It is so so well written and I can’t wait to see you react to it all play out, as well as some other surprises a long the way 🫢
The dynamic between Jimmy and Chuck feels very real and both actors are great. Idk how people who don't have siblings felt watching it, but people who do I'm sure recognized the love/hate relationship that's very common between siblings, the show just takes it up a notch
Michael Mando, Michael Mando, Mando all the waay!! He is Nacho in this show & his performance is a slay! (to the tune of jingle bells) Love every episode and scene he is in, brilliant, nuanced acting.
It's been pointed out to me that the grandma might not be as oblivious as she makes herself out to be. She specifically grabs cleaning supplies that are known for removing blood from carpet. They wouldn't work on salsa, or nearly as well.
Tuco's grandma isn't completely oblivious. She insists on using club soda to clean up the stain. Fun fact, club soda isn't any better for salsa, but it is good for cleaning up protein stains like blood. There might be a lot she doesn't want to know, but at the end of the day, she's a Salamanca too. One thing I appreciate about this episode is it shows something that lawyers are good for that people don't think about: sometimes you need someone else to speak on your behalf when you aren't really in a position to negotiate for yourself. Glad to see you're a MIchael Mando fan. Nacho is one of the best characters in this show.
7:24 Tuco has a "Taurus Raging Bull", which is probably the most apt handgun he could have. Its chambered to fire shotgun shells rather than the standard cartridge ammunition you would have in a typical revolver.
Michael Mando became my favorite actor from the Breaking Bad universe because of this show. You will absolutely love Nacho. God I can't wait to see you react to later seasons
Nacho (Micheal mando) is one of the best characters in this show. He might even be the best. His entire story arch is so satisfying to, but I cant tell more without spoiling it. So I wont. I really love the interaction between Jimmy and Mike in these first episode, so funny!
I remember popping big time when Michael Mando was on screen. My wife had never saw me play Far Cry 3 so she hadn't seen how fantastic he was just on motion capture and voice overs. By the end of the show, she absolutely LOVED him. He's absolutely fantastic in this show and he deserves everything. I hope his role in Spiderman pans out, he'd be an amazing Scorpion.
Can't wait to go on this ride with you! Here's some 'Mijo' BTS trivia for you - I'll try and hurl some at you with every reaction to enlighten you (there's often a lot, *cracks knuckles*...) So, first off, this episode spans three weeks: May 25th - June 15th 2002. Throughout production, keeping it a secret that they were bringing back Tuco was a real five-star nightmare, so they called the character “Mijo” - even in the scripts, on set, way before they even began filming the pilot, so it didn’t ruin the surprise. Ray Cruz who plays him didn’t even attend the pilot premiere. Dedication, my friend. And Tuco’s grandmother is played by Miriam Colon who’s also in Scarface, along with the late Mark Margolis (Hector) and Steven Bauer (Don Eladio). Also, recognise pictures of a baby Ray Cruz around the grandmother’s house. It’s also worth noting, would you believe, that this is pre-meth Tuco. And his gun is a model called 'The Judge' by Taurus. I think it holds five rounds, each one the size of a thumb. The desert scene was 13 pages long in the script, shot over two days, and was a nightmare to film due to the high winds, heat, dust. It’s also filmed in the exact spot where Walter gave his “say my name” speech. You’ll notice a lot throughout BCS that there’s not as much handheld camera work as there was in BB. Ray and Bob rehearsed quite a lot to get the tone of this whole scene just perfect, and it’s an acting masterclass. Jonathan Banks (Mike) still sings praise over it. Tuco foaming at the mouth over giving Cal and Lars both ‘Columbian Neckties’ - a nice and subtle nod to episode two of BB - ‘Cat’s in the Bag…’ as Jesse says to Walt that this is exactly what Krazy-8 will do to their families. And that handshake between Tuco and Jimmy was improvised by Ray. (note: THAT. F’KING. ZOOM.) Michael McKean tossing the phone onto the lawn and it landing near camera: one take. Just as well because Vince needed to use that camera asap to shoot his scene around the corner. Chuck’s space blankets are lined also, so it doesn’t make so much noise for the sound crew and they're more comfy to wear. They bought quite a lot of them, only for NASA to send them a lifetime's worth for free. The “It’s showtime, folks!” montage was filmed in just under a day, as they only had the courtroom building for that one day. A testament to the planning and professionalism of the BCS team. Jimmy’s office/home is the smallest box room on a massive sound stage, it’s insane just how claustrophobic it is. Vince Gilligan wanted small, and each time the set designers rebuilt it (I think it was three), he’d want it smaller, until they ended up with a room that can barely fit three crew members in. You’ll notice down the line that they’ll shoot static shots from the corner of the room with a camera that’s fitted with a custom lens that Vince had made, and it’s able to take in the entire room. Super filmmaking technique. And the final scene between Nacho and Jimmy - quite an significant one that the writers talked about it for about a year, as they kept coming back to the question: what is the different between Jimmy and Saul? - and we get that line, “I’m a lawyer, not a criminal.” And then you recall back to Jesse’s introduction to him in BB - “You need a *criminal* lawyer.” So much weight behind this scene. Anyway, hope you liked all that! Keep 'em coming, broseph. x
i love the continuity of the salamancas in the kitchen. it feels like the only time they are truly calm and it feels like the source of their family/love.
The “it’s showtime!” sequence of Saul working as a public defender is a tribute to “All that Jazz”, Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical film. It’s a masterpiece, you should watch it!
My partner mixed up the names so much that he eventually just started calling ALL of it Breaking Bad. I'll be watching season 4 episode 8 of Better Call Saul and he'll come up to me and be like "Oh so you're watching Breaking Bad again, huh?" I used to correct him but now I'm just like... "yup"
"He's a magician... That just really like to get paid." Get real paid. LMFAO. Truth. Long time lover of this show. I miss it like a phantom limb, so I troll RUclips looking for the good reaction channels. Looks like ZI've found another one :) Rock on, James...
Good idea about having a notepad handy! A lot of Breaking Bad was shot with a handheld feel to it, not many locked down or steadicam-style sequences (with maybe the exception of season 5). Better Call Saul is so full of static shots that can just be breathtaking, and a LOT of wides. They really turned everything up to 11 for this show.
Michael Mando is a central character in this series. He is incredible to watch. Just wait until the last two seasons when he carries many of the episodes
Tuco Salamanca is one of the best recurring characters in the BB universe! Raymond Cruz was perfect for the role!!! His character was Tight Tight Tight Yeah! 😂
If you ever want to feel mad about the Emmys, just remember: Better Caull Saul was never even nominated for best cinematography. Wednesday got nominated. A documentary about The Lakers got nominated. Star Wars: Andor got nominated. The Game of Thrones Finale? It got nominated. Amazon's Lord of the Rings series? It got nominated. AppleTV+'s terrible adaptation of Foundation? It got nominated. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has won the award. The Crown? Won. Twice. Like, I don't have anything against those other shows. In fact, when it comes to the Game of Thrones finale, the Lord of the Rings series and Foundation, the cinematography was basically the only thing holding those together (though all of those were mostly just because of CGI budgets larger than the GDP of some mid-sized nations). But, Better Call Saul, even the first season, set a new standard for cinematography on the small screen. And, as great as Season 1 is, subsequent seasons make earlier seasons look amateur in comparison. It's something unforgivable.
Its so awesome that Vince Gilligan is a huge fan of Scarface. To have Mark Margolis as Hector Salamanca, Steven Bauer as Don Eladio, and now Miriam Colon the mother of Tony Montana in Scarface to play Tucos abuelita. Bravo Vince 👏
There are actually some shorts they did of different characters cooking stuff they did in the show lol. But I would hold off on watching those until you get closer to the end of the series. Also you said 'that's what makes Saul so freaking good, man' - you might say it's what makes him Saul so freaking Goodman...
idk if you caught this and mentioned it on Patreon, but the montage of public defense work is a direct homage to a scene from All That Jazz (1979) by Bob Fosse, it's a fantastic movie and I can't recommend it enough!
If you remember back to breaking bad when Walt and Jesse kidnap Saul he first said friend of the cartel it was Ignacio he was the one aka nacho Vince Gilligan is a amazing that he made a whole character from that
I believe what chuck has is called Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, I don't know if its real but it basically makes you feel like your burning due the the electricity and light, i think its one of those things where some say fake and others say real so take what i say with a grain of salt, Also i'm so fuckin' happy he noticed Vaas who was a peak psychopath of an antagonists in gaming history, Also i'm glad we all appreciate those wide shots and angles, its very breaking bad like but not at the same time, Also seeing Tuco and that whole barter deal was fantastic
Dude I’ve really got into reaction vids lately but yours are always my favourite. You really get these shows and what they’re about and your positive vibes just honestly cheer me up
I don’t think I’m saying too much by saying this, this show has one of my favorite villain performances of all time, different but on the same level as Gus. I’m so hyped for these reactions, keep up the passion and great work!
Chuck is allergic to electricity. But Jimmy coming in supercharged with all that static from outside.. It's as if he were shooting lightning bolts from his fingertips.... Although I believe it's a psychosomatic condition... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's refreshing. EVERYBODY and their mama has reacted to BB. So Im so happy that you dove into BCS. It really has some spicy exposition.. and the origin story of Slippin Jimmy is what I enjoy. This Mike is great. Kim is unbelievable..truly an unsung character.. and boy there's so much more to come! Enjoy the show my guy
You should be far ahead already so this isn’t spoiler but I really love how at the beginning everyone (including me) rooted for Jimmy to become Saul and fall into the life of crime and showmanship as soon as possible but then as the show progresses you compare Jimmy to Saul we’ve seen in BB and you slowly start to dread this transition Such an incredible character
The show is great at showing us the amount bad decisions and shear trauma that resulted in Jimmy becoming Saul. It tuns out that Saul was not an "upgrade" for Jimmy but actually a horrible "downgrade".
I’ve believed since your Breaking Bad reactions that you would have an extremely high appreciation for this show on so many levels and so far I have no reason to believe otherwise. Like Breaking Bad, it only gets better from here!
I’ve actually shot the gun Tuco has a few times. The size and weight of the gun actually helps reduce the kickback. It’s surprisingly easy to shoot. It’s those little snub nose 357 revolvers that REALLY suck to shoot.
Keep going on with this series, James. You often point out details I missed originally so they give a deeper significance to think about and consider. Wishing you and your family a holiday season with peace, love, friendship, laughter, meaning, and every memorable experience. You are appreciated.❤
Saul has always been shown as a man with a conscience. He had his darker moments in BB yes, when he suggested some murders. But he also showed fierce loyalty towards his clients, and went above and beyond to help them, even when the smart thing was to run. That is a trait that makes him so unique.
Tight! Tight! Tight! Hope you all can enjoy the holidays along side this! Better Call Saul & The Last of Us & The Bear on Patreon! Click here: www.patreon.com/jamesvscinema Much love!
I always found it funny that Chuck made ppl ground themselves to prevent ESD, when he's wearing clothes, sitting on surface like his couch and chair, and rugs on the floor, which can all generate a charge.
Brooo i wish youd watch Mr Robot. The cinematography ALONE is enough to make someone watch, let alone the soundtrack, characters, development, plot twists and overall meaning. Only show that I've watched that rivals breaking bad and better call saul. Even if u just watched like a non spoiler clip of cinematography clips of Mr. Robot
Also, you have to jump into season 2 of Loki! One of the best character archs since Iron man. From start to finish, the characters, writing, music & the mystery element is delightful brain candy. Easily the best marvel show to me.
Ignacio is definitely one of my favorite characters because Mando does such a good job of playing his role, but I'm biased because of Far Cry as well..
She wasn't the maid. She was driving a brown taurus, which is the ford version of the mercury sable. They hit the wrong car. The show's attention to detail is off the charts.
It's kinda awesome that the actor that plays Tuco, Raymond Cruz, is such a nice guy that he actually HATED playing Tuco. It stressed him out playing such a loudmouthed asshole the entire time hes on screen. Great actor!
Love your critiques, you are going to be a great filmmaker ! You will love watching Jimmy McGill turn into Saul Goodman. As in it’s all good ,man! Saul Goodman.
Gotta love that shot, where Tuco and Saul are shaking hands in agreement, meanwhile the skateboarder twins are laying on the ground watching saul seal thier legs fate 😅 Tuco may have broken thier legs, but Saul signed off on it.
It’s really cool to see Jimmy interacting with Tuco and his crew. It’s also cool to see the introduction of Nacho. Great reaction James, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
The lesson everyone should learn from "Mijo" is never, under any circumstances, call an old grandmother "biznatch" or any derogatory term. Tuco's actions weren't completely unjustified in this episode.
A great follow up with the psychotic Tuco back again. Saul/Jimmy back out in the desert again! Of course this was first!. Jimmy trying to pretend he is an FBI SA just hilarious. A super scene when Jimmy begs for the life of the skater dudes. Tuco at his crazy best again, loving inflicting physical pain. Switch to Jimmy and Chuck, and his crazy phobias regarding electricity! Nacho visiting Saul a great scene, a pivotal character from the BBverse! James you will find out! This show will blow your mind!
my best friend, my pal, my home-boy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good-time boyeh: Nacho Varga. Honest to God my favorite character in the whole breaking bad universe, rotating the title with Kim.
These reactions make me appreciate these shows even more
Love hearing this!
michael mando is indeed a great actor. love his performance as nacho.
He is one of my top BB universe favourites after I watched BCS 😊
... "YOU THINK OF ME" -ifykyk
If you like Michael Mando, you're in for a treat! He's one of my fave characters in the show!
You mentioned Far Cry villains couple of times during Breaking Bad reactions and I was waiting for this episode... There you have it.
The dynamic between Jimmy and Chuck in my opinion, is the most interesting and fantastic dynamic on TV. It is so so well written and I can’t wait to see you react to it all play out, as well as some other surprises a long the way 🫢
The only dynamic that rivals Jimmy and Chuck is Jimmy and Kim.
You would like the characters in succession, very similar broken family dynamics at play in that show :)
The dynamic between Jimmy and Chuck feels very real and both actors are great. Idk how people who don't have siblings felt watching it, but people who do I'm sure recognized the love/hate relationship that's very common between siblings, the show just takes it up a notch

Or shes done it before

Nacho is terrific. Really wish he was in other shows because that actor is great in this show.
Better Eat Your Nachos is gonna be the new spin-off.

Michael Mandos performance in this show is incredible. Love seeing the praise already
I'm sorry, but the entire convo Jimmy has with Tuco about how to punish the two skaters is solid gold 👌😂
Michael Mando became my favorite actor from the Breaking Bad universe because of this show. You will absolutely love Nacho. God I can't wait to see you react to later seasons
Michael Mando is a great actor, and he gets better with each episode. He’s my favorite character.

I hope his role in Spiderman pans out, he'd be an amazing Scorpion.
I'm glad they were able to get Tuco back after the actor said he had a hard time being that intense of a character the first time around
He said that his wife hated the Tuco character and he did not want to upset his wife or something.
I wouldnt like my husband playing tuco either. He is terrifying and would scare me to death when he comes home still in character lol

Idk if I’ve ever been more excited for a reaction series, this show gets better and better with every season. It’s the cherry on top of breaking bad

"Nacho" is a major character in BCS
Chuck is "allergic to electricity"
The breaking of the bread sticks, soaked Saul's memories of the two skateboarders leg breakings.
Nacho is one of my top five characters in this show. And that's saying something with this outstanding cast.
If you remember back to breaking bad when Walt and Jesse kidnap Saul he first said friend of the cartel it was Ignacio he was the one aka nacho Vince Gilligan is a amazing that he made a whole character from that
Saul has the superpower of how to use words in every moment. All his xp are into charisma/ trickster.
FUN FACT: The grandma of Tuco was not oblivious at all.
Club Soda does not remove Salsa Stains. It does however remove Blood.
She is a real Salamanca!

“You’re the worst lawyer ever!”
“I just talked you down from a death sentence to a six month probation. I’m the BEST lawyer ever!”

The cinematography goes god tier in the first half of the final season.

Tight! Tight! Tight! Hope you all can enjoy the holidays along side this!

Much love!
James I am TELLING you man, I KNOW you’ll love this show just as much as breaking bad just seeing your reaction to Michael mando as nacho!
Robot
The thing you said about jimmy and Walter with regrets, remember that for the series finale lol that’s wild you said this in S1E2
Watched your ep1 reaction not 2 hours ago and im praising the Lord that ep2 hit YT so fast!
Hahaha cheers!
This show was so much better than I ever expected.
Just remember, a lot of these new characters were put in this show because they were mentioned once or twice in passing in breaking bad lol.
Gotta love that shot, where Tuco and Saul are shaking hands in agreement, meanwhile the skateboarder twins are laying on the ground watching saul seal thier legs fate 😅
Tuco may have broken thier legs, but Saul signed off on it.
Love the notebook idea. At the end of the day, enjoy the show how you like to do it. We're just along for the ride. 🙂
It’s really cool to see Jimmy interacting with Tuco and his crew. It’s also cool to see the introduction of Nacho. Great reaction James, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!
13:00 If you think Colombian necktie is brutal, look up the Viking Blood Eagle 😉
Ever since I started this show, I keep saying "it's showtime folks" every single time I start my shift at work.
The lesson everyone should learn from "Mijo" is never, under any circumstances, call an old grandmother "biznatch" or any derogatory term. Tuco's actions weren't completely unjustified in this episode.
Yo I never realized that was Vaas! And I played a butt load of Far Cry 3. I got the Platinum Trophy in that.
The first time I see Vaas on screen I’m freak out and I just know his acting gonna be top notch in this show
12:07 "This is what makes Saul so Goodman!"
-James, 2023
A great follow up with the psychotic Tuco back again. Saul/Jimmy back out in the desert again! Of course this was first!. Jimmy trying to pretend he is an FBI SA just hilarious. A super scene when Jimmy begs for the life of the skater dudes. Tuco at his crazy best again, loving inflicting physical pain. Switch to Jimmy and Chuck, and his crazy phobias regarding electricity! Nacho visiting Saul a great scene, a pivotal character from the BBverse! James you will find out! This show will blow your mind!
This show is just perfect
I laughed my ass off when he took them to the ER & they said he was a horrible lawyer! He’ says I’m a GREAT LAWYER, I saved your dumb ass lives!
I remember watching this episode and laughing for 30 minutes, they squeezed every possible great interaction out of the desert scene 😂
Im so exited to se more and more of ur reactions th this show, love it!
my best friend, my pal, my home-boy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good-time boyeh: Nacho Varga. Honest to God my favorite character in the whole breaking bad universe, rotating the title with Kim.
fun fact: club soda won't help getting salsa out of the carpet, but it will get blood out! abuelita knows what's up. she is a salamanca after all
