Psychology of (Israeli-Palestinian) Conflict (Read DESCRIPTION)

  • CORRECTION and APOLOGY: The Hamas beheaded soldiers and murdered babies. But mercifully, they did not behead the babies. My apologies for getting this detail wrong.
There is a trauma response playing on both sides. Israel is a product of the Holocaust and the Palestinians have their Naqba.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a form of competitive victimhood: a clash between two entitled and self-centred dysempathic victimhood movements.
Like every conflict in history, it gives rise to:
    Paranoid ideation and conspiracism
Narcissistic defenses (cognitive distortions such as grandiosity),
    Impaired reality testing,
    Magical thinking,
Splitting (dichotomous thinking): We are all good, our enemies are all bad.
    Reactance (defiance and contumaciousness),
    Recklessness,
    Mood lability and emotional dysregulation,
Suicidal ideation coupled with religious righteousness (Masada, shahada)
The parties to the conflict abuse and manipulate each other by
    externalizing aggression,
    gaslighting,
and projective identification (provoking the other party to behave in a way that conforms to expectations and negates a negative self-image).

Armenia betrayed Turkey and went with Europe, that’s why turkish did what they did. In wars betrayals are not at all acceptable because they make you lose your land and your people. And indeed Turkey lost so many of them due to the betrayal, In all countries and in war laws betrayals are punished … Was the genocide wrong ? YES of course. Turkey should have dealt with those who betray her in the Armenian government not all Armenians … But sticking to that narrative is stupid, they should apologize and you should forgive and turn the page as Sam Vaknin said … We all make mistakes and living in the past mistakes and keeping the grudges won’t help anyone … Europe for example is using that as a mean to divide these 2 populations… And you are falling for it…

Professor Sam I had no idea that Narcissim was so insiduous to the point of such poisonous infection for thousands of years. Being born Jewish, but converted to Christianity, I have long experienced narcissim as a common trait in my family. To get this broader perspective of identity distortion to the point of suicidal outcomes is horrific. To see these traits so explicitly expounded in both Palestine and Israel is an evil with a very dark and hollow sound. It echoes and haunts the future fantasy sharing. How beautiful it would be if empathy could resolve and infiltrate these horror scenes. Your discourse is scary in its accuracy. You are truly remarkable in insight and perception. A unique talent. Yes sad that unless each side can face itself and it’s mistakes, there is no chance for peace…..in fact it goes beyond psychology …it goes into the past and past lives too, which very very few can see and therefore will not accept. Within the oppressed, there is the oppressor and within the oppressor the oppressed, as is the case for those who take sides to the extremes. As generally people cannot face themselves, they project that which they cannot face outwards onto others. If one could look at oneself ..not from a place of blame but as part of the way to accessing eternal peace within, then one can be a vehicle for peace for others willing to do the same ….most are not willing to let go of their blind beliefs and what they see as being right and so anger, fear, recriminations continue and all suffer more.

Interestingly enough, the person who traumatized me enough to delve into the realm of narcissism because of his immense maladaptive behaviors is the son of a Palestinian man who grew up in the camps and was brought to the US by Christian missionaries to be raised as their own. That young man eventually married a woman and fathered a child on her. That marriage disintegrated because of the husbands abusive behavior when the child was less than a year old and then the mother abused the child mercilessly because he resembled his father. That child is now 54 years old and a malignant narcissist.

There are more than 7 million Muslims who chose to live, coexist, share their fortunes with the 7 million Jews in Israel.
Gaza is bigger than 50 or more countries and could be an example of how a small Palestine Nation can work and be next to Israel but I suspect it has few others than Muslims and possibly one of the purist of places with few other ethnic groups?
Belgium is both smaller and with more people but there aren’t many calling Belgium over crowded or resembling an open air prison but it does also have a few murderous Muslims there who occasionally inflict their murders on innocents in Europe for blasphemy of their past leader.
I do get the feeling that there are many Little Hitlers ( going under the name of various Muslim factions ) still around trying to get the Final Solution to the Jewish settlement in Canaan.

I have been thinking about this psychopathic insanity all week and have been strongly reminded of a story I was told by someone who I took a financial planning course from years ago. The story was about a family of fairly modest financial means (4 children) who collectively inherited their parents’ farm. In today’s dollars let’s say the farm was worth $40 million dollars - a lot of money for people of modest means. Well there was some lack of clarity in the will and two of the children thought they deserved a bigger share; so they lawyered up to contest the will. The other children were infuriated and lawyered up as well. To make a long story short this legal battle continued on for years to the point where the entire $40 million was gone and all of them were in debt with legal fees, when each of these people of modest means could have just walked away with $10 million each and been very comfortably set for life. But instead they let rage and an overpowering sense of entitlement destroy them. Human nature definitely has some very strange and tragic maladaptations.

I grew up in Northern Ireland and I lived through all the period of terrible violence there. In fact I am older than the professor.
I think this video could be applied so well to the NI situation. Something I see often is that people will say that Muslims have some inherent tendency to violence and I will see many terrible things said about Jewish people.
Well in Northern Ireland it was Protestants and Catholics, there were no Muslims or Jews present. Those Protestants and Catholics would commit appalling acts of violence upon each other. So it is clear to me that the violence in Israel/Palestine has nothing to do with either being a Muslim or being a Jew.
Both sides in Northern Ireland had very developed myths about their own histories, very often casting themselves as victims but also as heroic victors.
The myths were all about dehumanising the other side. The other side was always portrayed as cowardly and cunning, full of moral perversion.
So from what I can see it is not at all that the people in this current conflict are either Muslim or Jewish, but rather that each side is trapped in very damaging myths about themselves and the people they have chosen to see as their enemies.

Anyway, I have been able to see how governments, employers, churches, religions etc can operate in the same manner. It has been the silver lining.

      Thank you for sharing!!
Your comment totally resonated for me. I can relate as my father has been a cruel narcissist towards me my whole life.
I studied psychology. Got an honours degree in it along with sociology & philosophy. Probably the main learning point was from Sociology 101, how easy & necessary it is to dehumanize & demonize the "other" to justify conflict, hatred & war.
Went to therapy for years... just made me feel pathologized & useless.
Coaching via landmark helped empower me.
CoDA resources via "therooms" (Trauma & Recovery mtg & "Healthy Love" mtg) offered me so much more than studying psychology & spiralling in psychotherapy. Real people in recovery sharing their stories of recovery, strength & hope.
All this has helped me too to see-as you have- how trauma & distorted psychology plays out in the world on all levels.
The old skool way of leading requires & rewards narcissists... and can & has taken its authority to extremes in every facet of society & culture. The school-education-indoctrination system... medical-drug cartel ... legal injustice system... churches & religions in general ... economic-financial central banking industry ... military-prison industrial complex ... the gov-corp media propaganda ... HollyWeird ... FashistBook... even the art world ...
We all need to learn how to lead ourselves & then to share leadership.

As an Arab and a father of Celiac Disease child I have been always emotionally connected with Celiac decease children either Jew or Palestinian or any other child in this world. when you minimize the layers of collateral Identity forms, Human is the real identity.

The Bible says God will protect those who stand with Israel so in my opinion the U.S. ignores or dismisses anything bad Israelites may do. This inturn enrages Palestineians more and probably makes things worse.
