    Emma is an ethical queen! Instead of using her platform with affiliate codes to encourage people to buy, buy, buy, she’s encouraging better shopping behavior! This was such a welcome reminder for me personally, and I’m sure for others too :)

      Yess and her style is very classic and wearable. It's not about everchanging trends but about building a nice wardrobe over time. Does not produce that anxiety of having to buy constantly to keep up with the trends that will become obsolete and unwearable next season.

    I'm gradually learning that before making any purchase, I ask myself, "Do I really need this? Will I get use out of it? Do I already own something that resembles this?" These questions save me from making unnecessary purchases. In fact, I didnt buy anything this past Black Friday, except groceries 🙌🏽

    Yes, I really appreciated this discussion and reminders. We needed these encouragements and review. I am a 🌟list maker,too. It amazes me to find an old list and discovered that I have lived WELL without the clutter of ownership. I have a smaller closet now, and it is working better. I kept only the favorite/quality items, no matter how old, and I’m getting compliments!! You are our style consultant and always look so smart and stunning. When looking deeper, your look is simple and classic and sophisticated. Polished is the correct word. That’s a high goal to work toward !!

    I have had a "no buy" year (I have a lot of unworn clothes) and next year is going to be "low buy". My style is Scandinavian minimalistic (I am Danish). Second hand is new to me, but for sure something I'm going use. I have always loved good quality, but found in later years that brands I used to find high quality really wasn't any more. And also I would love if there was some transparency in sustainability, a lot brands claim they are but, oh no they are not. Would love a "tag" like when I buy a ecological apple it has a tag...
    Loved your video, don't think I have made such a long comment before 💗

    Same, Emma. I also add clothes and shoes on my favourite list so I can go back to them after a month and I always ask myself if I still want to purchase them. Most often than not, I always remove things on that favourites list and give another month to the remaining items so I can be really sure that the things I’m purchasing are the things that will add value in my life. Great video! 🤎

    I would love to hear from you about how this journey has impacted you? Like we all know that it’s better for the environment to be more sustainable in our purchases, but I don’t think enough is being said about how it impacts us the consumers!
    I live in a society where the herd mentality of buying what’s new, trendy and expensive is very much the norm, and if you don’t you’re looked down upon! Crazy, I know! And I’m not falling for that trap but I do sometimes feel the pressure

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  3 года назад +14

      To be honest I haven’t felt a single negative impact in terms of mental health. It’s actually had a positive impact. Buying less has meant less stress of having to fit everything into the storage we have but also I just feel much happier with the investments that I have made. I’m a consumer but I also work in this industry so the only negative for me has been a drop in earnings from not doing hauls and that kind of content, as it is a very lucrative form of content which embodies the ‘buy buy buy’ message. However this wouldn’t apply to anyone that doesn’t work in this industry and to be honest I think there can be an element getting greedy rather than being satisfied with what you can earn honestly and responsibly.
      I totally understand what you’re saying about herd mentality though. This is just something you have to separate yourself from and be proud to say things like “oh this? It’s second hand” and “yeh had this for years and I love it”. There’s so much more satisfaction in that than there is the reality “I’ve got all this new stuff but it’s wasted money that I’ll never see again”.

    Some great tips and resources mentioned that I wasn’t aware of so will add to my list of things to look into going forward. None of us are perfect but if we all do a small part in making a change it does make a difference. I think ultimately the more store closures that are happening consumerism is already changing in a way. I know in your particular line of work it must be very challenging but love the enthusiasm and commitment you’re making to move in this direction and to also help educate others (ourselves) on this sometimes controversial topic 🙏🏼🌎.

    Silent watcher 🙋🏻‍♀️ thank you for making these videos. I’ve been watching since before you started this journey and have found it so helpful and interesting😊 I think you do a great job of setting an example and encouraging us to make better choices without them coming across as extreme/ judgemental. I think it helps people that maybe haven’t embarked on this journey yet to not feel totally alienated or like they have to start a new minimalist +100% ethical wardrobe tomorrow.

    • @NoxTenebrisEternum
      @NoxTenebrisEternum 3 года назад

      + I feel like if you make content around clothes for a living ( with all the expectation of consumption and variety that comes with said job) and still make some better choices, then people like me that truly don’t need to worry about whether or not they’ve been seen in an outfit before can go even further and finally shed that silly societal pressure of having ‘new’ stuff all of the time 🖤😎

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  3 года назад +10

      Yes I’m afraid Everlane are nothing like what they have claimed to be which is why I stopped working with them/buying from them last year. They did some pretty shady stuff at the start of the pandemic with regards to their staff as well 😕 Sadly, ‘greenwashing’ is their area of expertise. I think it’s great if a brand is transparent, even if they’re not ethical or sustainable because at least the info is laid out for the consumer to see and measure changes, albeit with a lot of reading through their reports 🙈 But Everlane marketed themselves to be transparent with their clever marketing techniques which definitely appealed to a lot of people. Myself included. I was so sucked in by Everlane because they sold us the dream, guilt free shopping 😕

    Thank you for speaking up about this. I have a lot I want to say on the subject that I've learned through my life long love of fashion. I started working in retail in the early 90's and studied fashion merchandising, not ever imagining it would turn into what it is today. I just lived as an average consumer who was raised purchasing from 2nd hand shops and the mall.
    I miss the quality of anything made before the very early 2000's.
    Buying and selling on Ebay since 2002 has been one way of supporting my clothes addiction. As a list writer and a bit of a clothes hoarder it gets overwhelming wanting everything I find from a particular brand and era. I do enjoy the excitement of finding something I had regretted donating and I would buy again. That is much more satisfying than shopping at the mall for me. Thank you for letting me share. Always sending you positive vibes and well wishes xo

    I love these videos - it's how I came across your channel! I would love to shop more responsibly and any advice on how to do this is fantastic. Such a refreshing change from all the high street "haul" videos which encourage people to buy loads of cheap items they're hardly going to wear!

    Yes I do think we need more videos like this because it is the right path toward conscious buying/buyer, sustainable fashion, quality over quantity, so yes Emma please do more videos like this, sharing personal/first hand experiences and sharing your knowledge about fashion and other things as well of course (books, apps, , lifestyle etc.). I always learn something new and what is most important it makes me rethink about my purchases and the way I will be buying in the future, also what I love is to do my own research before I decide what to buy. Thank you for sharing. 👍

    Well done great tips! Resource recommendations are excellent. I too have been very conscious of where and how the clothes I consider buying. I've now gone into the beauty side, I'm finding the cosmetics are quite hard, the skincare products I've conquered.

    There are already plenty of comments so this may be redundant. But I really enjoy fashion content creators who buy second so much more. It feels like it takes more creativity to be able to successfully articulate a style. In a day and age where high fashion is tumbling down to the rabbit hole of fast fashion*eh hem, vuitton*... being mindful of your consumption is so so so important. More of this type of content is a certainly an outlier in the most positive and exciting way 😊

    Loved this video and all your others of late (tbh). I think encouraging us viewers to be responsible with our shopping habits is such a good way to use your voice and platform especially compared to a lot of other influencers/content creators. Would love to hear more recommendations of podcasts, docs, books etc we should be reading! ❤️

    I turned 30 this year and I feel like my wardrobe is need of a major style overhaul, but my goal is to do it in a more thoughtful and considered way - both for the sake of the environment and my wallet. Videos like this help so much!! (Plus I love your style. I get so much inspiration from you all around!)

    I loved this well timed and thoughtful video. Our email inboxes are busting with tempting titles this time of year. I think probably a lot of your viewers are on this sort of journey of “buy better, buy less” and a handful of accessible documentaries, podcasts, and book recommendations (with the EH seal of approval) can be quite impactful. 🤍

    Yes absolutely use your platform to inform on better consumption. I did shop in this black friday for items on my wishlist and it felt so good to be able to save some money on better quality items and ethical brands. This black friday felt different. More awareness of thoughtful buying and ethical brands saying, actually black friday can call more people into sustainability.

    Thanks Emma just starting this journey so this is very helpful and have downloaded the app to help! Think your approach especially the ‘buy to sell idea’ is a really good one and is helping me to have a more focussed wardrobe of clothes. The more ‘interchangeable’ the clothes are the more outfits I can create with less. Plus... now adopted the rule of 3 too!! Thank you 🙏 👍❤️

    I have loved seeing how your shopping habits have changed and always enjoy these type of videos from you. I actually made my first #secondhandbutgrand eBay purchase this week and it was exhilarating winning something I had given a lot of thought to. I saved £105 off the retail price and felt good that i had given an unloved bag which was in perfect condition a new home! Thank you for inspiring me to shop more sustainably 💗

    Great video and I would love to hear more about your sustainable journey! It’s been interesting and inspiring to watch how you’ve delved more into the second-hand market. I’ve been shopping second-hand for some time but know it can be a little intimidating for some people. You have a couple of videos that are really instructive re: making second-hand purchases and showing how that process works which I’ve found particularly useful!
    Thanks for all your hard work in this area and for using your platform for a good purpose ❤️

    Thank you for such an insightful video. It’s really great to see a honest approach to more sustainable consumption that has given me a lot to think about. This year I made a promise to myself to only buy anything in the Black Friday sales if it had been on my wish list for over a month and it has drastically reduced the number of items I purchased - only a small step but I’m determined to make it the first of many.

    I loved the buy better T-shirt comparison.
    I remember buying one simple grey T-shirt from Acne’s own outlet, and had it for ca 3 years before the first marks got visible. (I still have it in my wardrobe). It made me stop shopping cheap shirts that I know will last for 6 months or less.

    I have been obsessed with eBay ever since you made one of your first videos on second hand buying. I spent most of my twenties buying without consideration and it makes me sick to know how much money I wasted in the process. I still fall into the trap occasionally and order a bunch of items from places like Zara or H&M but this is usually followed by instant regret and I end of sending most (if not all) of it back. Anyway, I appreciate these videos and your honest portrayal because we’re all learning and it’s a tough habit to beat when you’ve been shopping a certain way your entire life.

    • @EmmaHill

      Oh gosh yes, the amount of money I wasted over the years makes me feel sick. When I think back to the days where I used to order huge bags full of Missguided, boohoo and Asos on a WEEKLY basis I just wish I could go back and shake myself 🤦🏼‍♀️
