No auto combat means the gameplay is designed to be played, and it shows. There's a good amount of depth to it, considering the limitations it's working with. I like it's one of the few gacha games that doesn't turn its characters into chibis, and also features plenty of units with unique body types that aren't just copy/pasted models of other units. Though the best of the game is definitely the story (once you get past the first couple of chapters, at least.)

    • @ginzzqe
      @ginzzqe Год назад +18

This kind of design philosophy also reminds me of what Genshin does with their forced unskippable cutscenes, but that combined with doing your dailies and farming for talent mats/artifacts in domains all just feel like a slog to play through.

I agree with the first part, if it wasnt for how bad the events are designed. In such events to clear the event itself you must play the same stage on repeat a lot of times with the same mobs over and over, that design is definitely made for idle games or auto-focused games specially with the lotteries. And surprisingly a game like HSR does this better. Wdym unique body types that arent copy/pasted models? Did you just suddenly forget how many artorias/rins/sakuras are in this game? lol

Truth be told - when you skipped the story... that hurt.
I think I speak for the majority of FGO players out there when I say that we stick around the game for the most part due to it's story and how it is told.
The events are mostly fun and memes. So much that things like "Fate/Grand Carnival" or "FGO: Learning with Manga" can exist.
On the other side is the main story of the game that took some time to get into it's gears, but as soon as we reach Camelot (singularity 6) the story gets more gritty and grand. Especially if you enter story part 2 (Cosmos in the Lostbelt).
The story really is the flesh and bones of FGO in my opinion. You should really read it. It enhances the experience by a vast margin. Just thinking about the current LB6. That's just great storytelling and I would not want anyone participating in this journey to miss out on that end :D

I think that one of the appeals is that, because in it's core, it's a TCG card game, where progress is fair.
Even if there are OP characters, they are exceedingly limited, but as you play, you find that any unit is viable for progress.
If you don't follow the story (honestly one of the best written ones in the latter half of part one), the battles, the music, the tension... they nail it when the stakes are high, or when the events get goofy.
Certainly not a perfect game, but still a pretty fun (and often times addictive) one.

    FGO pros and cons (IMO)
    CONS:
    - Rates are super low (1 percent for an SSR)
    - Scarce resource for beginners
-Most good servants are limited (hard to get)
    - Grinding for a certain items or mats could take hours (took 2 hours to get 3 Evil Bones)
    PROS:
-Story (one of the best and well written gacha games)
-Great and unique character designs (Male, Female, Lolis, Shotas etc. FGO got em all.)
-BGM (How good is the music in fgo? Just listen to Muramasa's theme as an example)
-Great Artwork ( your favorite artist might've designed a character from FGO)
    - Great VA ( you might recognize your favorite seiyuu in this game)
-Waifus and Husbandos (Don't judge me, but Kiara is my Waifu)
-Friend support (you can borrow a servant from your friends to aid you in your quest
-NP Animations (Some Noble Phantasm are in Cinematic/Anime Style so they're gonna look very cool)
-JRPG (If you like turn based games then this game is for you)
-F2P friendly (like most gacha games, FGO is F2P friendly. You don't need to spend money. Just have to grind, prepare and save months prior to rolling a certain gacha or event.

You know why I play FGO and why I can't let it go no matter what?. The same reason as everyone else... The story and the fact I spend a few bucks to it every year during New Years Lucky bag. The story will reel you in and they writers know how to pull your heartstrings and get you attach to the characters. So by the end you will still roll whether you actually needed the unit or not. It will be even more harder to drop the game since you already spent cash to it so it's gonna be "why not just continue since you're enjoying it anyway".
Its disappointing that not even once you mentioned the no. 1 selling point of the game... Its story. There's no doubt that 90% of the playerbase are here for that as well as the beautiful art style and NP animations. Also Fate as a whole has a dedicated fanbase. They've been there since the first Fate/StayNight anime that made the visual novel known outside Japan leading to the creation of the group mirror moon who made the unofficial english patches to the other type moon visual novels. The studio Deen adaptation of Fate/Stay Night also jumpstarted the popularity of the series. Hearing you say that the only thing the game has was it's amazing animation makes me think that you actually don't know what you're talking about at all. Its like you're trying to diss the game but making sure you won't trigger anyone at all but failing. Saying that you enjoy the game without mentioning the core aspect that makes it enjoyable is like saying a burger is delicious even without the patty. With just the cheese and veggies left, that's not even a burger anymore but a sandwich damn it.

I think big appeal is the gacha itself too. Not only because the characters are really interesting or unique (and have both men and women) but those ugly rates and frustration are part of its addiction. I played Azur Lane and games like that and getting limited SSR was basically guaranteed every event I played. In FGO getting rate up SSR or even SSR is one big frustration. You can save for year and get destroyed. But when you get that SSR, your happiness is like 10 times bigger than in lots of other gacha games.
Of course story, characters, music and stuff play big role in why it is loved too.
And gameplay is actually pretty deep, has lots of techniques, unique ways to build teams around different card types or focus of damage (crits, np spam etc) with essential support sevants and lots of options regarding damage dealers etc... it looks simple, it is basically turn based combat but I enjoy it more than majority of other turn based combat games out there.
The fact that it is fate and majority of characters are history/myth/folklore/fictional heroes types of characters really brings in the appeal for even more people too.
And finally autoplay. It is pretty interesting topic in this game. You see, sometimes when I am burned out, I am mad that there is no autoplay but at the same time I feel like that if there was, the game would be ruined. The grind, especially lottery events (iconic part of game and community practically loves the suffering), where you farm like hundreds of runs to get enough currency to obtain lots of materials... I think the game would be ruined and lots of players would leave... the suffering is part of FGO, we love the game, we hate it and it is the hardest gacha for me to drop. Almost impossible. I left like 2k bucks in it over last five to six years I have played it and it just became part of my life at this point.
Is it worth to play it? Hell if I know, Its hell after all. But still give it a try guys.

FGO is probably the only gacha to give me actual stress when I was rolling, rather than just enjoyment, because there are a few 'must get' characters that you need to really be able to push some of the harder content. Ultimately though I think you touch on a lot of good points - the brutality of the system does make the actual successes feel that much better.
As for autoplay... that's been solved with 3rd party stuff for a while now. It does make grinding much more palatable, that is for sure, but it isn't any sort of guaranteed 'it's going to work in every circumstance' option available. But I guarantee you that folks burning hundreds of apples and getting lotto boxes in the hundreds on those events are probably using one of the 3rd party farming options.

I just love to see my favorite characters hitting big numbers; i love to hear their voice lines when i pick their cards, to the point where i will randomly select -> deselect -> select their cards repeatedly, JUST to hear them TALKING; i love to see their NP animations and voice lines, i love to see their different animations and MORE voice lines when i use their skills; i also regularly go to my room to interact with my characters and i constantly dig up lore in the internet.
I might be biased because i love Fate, but i wasnt even a big fan before FGO since i only had watched Fate Extra on Netflix and fell in love with Nero, now ive watched A LOT of Fate and fell in love with half of the Fate Franchise already. top reasons to play fgo:
fgo JP is ahead of other versions with 2 years worth of content
    very rich story
people who are outside of Japan and play that version of the game ,properly explore the content/gacha characters and give good feed back on which banner you should roll for or not
i have been a f2p player for over 2 years and i have all the strong and important characters by just following a calendar that shows upcoming content to fgo NA and by checking JP fgo players review videos on the characters
you may feel extremely weak and overwhelmed by the time you start, just know that by logging in daily to claim log in rewards to just roll for the good banners is enough for a starting account for a first year, it all goes down to which of the three types you want to build :Buster/Arts/Quick, go for one and never for all.
Also, any one who tells you waifu> meta when you are new player deserves an immediate block, cuz i fell for that when i was a beginner and i regretted later on so hard.

You're really doing yourself a disservice by skipping the story segments. Granted, the first couple of singularities were rather bland, but the writing starts getting better by the third singularity, and it really kicks off once you hit the sixth singularity. The sixth singularity also happens to be a major difficulty spike and it becomes much more important to start planning out your team comps and making use of your servants' unique traits such as skills and noble phantasms that add bonus damage against different enemies. Once you get to part 1.5, which you can skip over if you want, things get further mixed up by the inclusion of the break bar mechanic. Break bars are additional health bars for the enemies you are fighting, and often times (though not always) getting through break bars will trigger changes in the battle. It could be that the enemy you are fighting will fully charge their noble phantasm gauge and immediately hammer your party, or it could be that the enemy changes class, or maybe the enemy activates new, often permanent buffs. There are even times where the enemy gets debuffed as you progress through their break bars. It really changes the dynamics of combat up quite a bit, and you never really know ahead of time what you're going to face.

However, it's next to impossible to sell this game to someone based off of the story since it takes FOREVER to get good. It's not until Oceanos that I feel the game really hits its stride, but that's like 10 hours in at that point (if you dont skip any dialogue, and you shouldnt since itll be hard to understand whats going on later, even if most of the early stuff is mediocre).

Aside from playing with a community, the difference between now and 3 years ago might have been because there have been a ton of small but impactful changes: Widescreen nps, a general engine upgrade, HQ rendering during sped up battles, and a ton of small new player experience improvements. It just looks and feels better than it used to, even if the art itself hasn't changed much.
As for gacha rates, something that often gets overlooked is that, you only really need 1. An np1 servant is, mostly, feature complete (Ok there's coins, but I'm still on a fix copium).

I've been playing gachas since brave frontier and have known about fgo for many years now. I've actually considered trying it out on numerous occasions but I haven't. why? that's because over the years I've played dozens of gachas and whenever the topic about worst gacha pull experience is being discussed, there's always that one fgo player that would insert themselves in the conversation, tell us that we should consider ourselves lucky that its not as bad as fgo's, and then proceed to share their probably exaggerated fgo gacha pull horror story. so it has cemented the idea in my mind that fgo will not only gut my wallet, not only drain my bank account, not only hijack my car, but also steal the deed to my house if I were to jump into that bottomless rabbit hole.

There are many reasons people got into this hellhole, but as alot of people have been saying, the gatcha is infernal, but still gives some massive hype moments when you finally get the one you want. Something that should be said: Even the low rarity units have their worth, and even if some are weaker than paper, with the Rank Ups and Interludes every character gets, their play-style evolves over time, making things not get too stale.
Also, the story (with some exceptions), At chapters 6 of part one it only gets better. The only sad thing is that if you start late, there are some events and units you will most likely never see outside of supports, and not really being able replay old events and do older fights from story is sad.

One thing to keep in mind, FGO is the game that not keeping you "whole day" You can just login do 3 fight a day, finish and move on to another thing you have to do. Well, FGO may keep you play during "Seasonal Events" only that the time you grind for it the entire event for 2 week depend on what you want from the event shop. And you have take rest for 1-2 week before another event come up.
Yes, the gameplay, UI, is cant keep up with 1-3 recent yrs mobile games. But one thing that FGO is still good at; still a "normal" mobile game. Mobile game, a game that you play during you do task or wait something to complete irl, for a short period of time. For example, wait for laundry to finished, waiting your friend at a shop or restaurant. And that is a still good mobile game to me. not like many game that you do in-game daily tasks like 1-3 hours to complete it all

Week 1 FGO NA player here. Though the gameplay feels old and dated, the story is top notch. The writing on the first few chapters (singularities) are not that great. The devs thought gacha games were just mass produced crap. By the 5th and 6th singularity onwards, Nasu and his team realized that people actually want a good story in their gacha games, so they cracked their knuckles and showed the world WHY the Fate franchise became such a big deal from Fate/Stay Night (a visual novel) onwards:
    Awesome storytelling.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the game as well. FGO has anime adaptations by the way. 6th singularity Camelot, and 7th singularity Babylonia had a movie and series. The story gets REALLY GOOD by Camelot onwards, with funny events every once in a while.
On a final note: The reason why players tell you not to play is... because we're all in gacha hell. I have paid off my debt, but Oberon is coming up in a couple days, and then Summer Kama in a month or two.

FGO has this evil formula of abysmal gacha rates, but amazing characters that you want to roll for. The gameplay, while interesting during story and challenging content, is often just putting together an efficient farming comp that you’ll use in 90% of your runs. The story has it’s high points, but often, especially early on is relatively mid and is just a vehicle to showcase the characters they’re trying to entice you to spend money on. As a player of 4 years I genuinely don’t recommend the game unless you’d be in it for the long haul and are okay with suffering through the gacha rollercoaster and the grind of farming materials for the vast majority of your time spent playing. If you’re cool with all that though, then welcome 😂

Nasuverse, well for this argument mostly Fate, rabbit hole is the best and the worst at the same time (for me mostly the best tho)
Its more then franchise at this point

Hot take: Fgo is better than genshin in terms of story and character design

    FGO my beloved.
Farming shit outside of events kinda sucks the fun out of it, so I just stopped doing it lol.
Doing fine in terms of mats regardless.

Fate still be my most favorite game ever. The story, animation, gameplay and character design is just top tier.
If there's one thing I don't like about it... Is the gacha. I think it's the worst ever between every other gacha games.
Fyi: I don't really like open world games like Genshin. But honkai star rail seems interesting.
