Western North Carolina, in general, is a wonderland. Asheville is plagued with police shortages, crime, drugs, homelessness and makes the national news for these problems. Asheville lives up to it's reputation as San Francisco east. Natives, like me, stay out of downtown.

Not true! I was surprised to see several during my visit and they appeared to be residents.
