As an Eastern NC resident, everything you said is very accurate! You’ll notice that Tarheels around the state stick too their areas! The only downfall of living in NC! The map might say 24 miles too a destination but be prepared that it might take longer than 24 minutes too get to your destination! The infrastructure is a bit dated but here in NC you’ll realize that we’re a very patient state!
Another point on driving in NC. If you’re not from the region, you should be prepared for the possibility that a summer rainstorm can suddenly reduce visibility on the road to an alarming degree. And to point out the obvious, don’t keep driving forward if you can’t see where you’re going.
I’m a NC native. My family were Bavarian immigrants who moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1760’s. If you appreciate the various cultures within the state, do not move here and try to change them. We’ve done very well for ourselves for the last 300 years. We don’t care how you did it where you came from. If you have no intentions of assimilating, stay where you are. We will all be happier in the end. Bless your heart.
@@estherbosbach377 ….how can I “come back to Bavaria” if I’ve never even been there? My family left Bavaria in 1748, that’s 275 years ago for the mathematically challenged. If this is some awkward attempt to virtue signal support for the “indigenous peoples” of North Carolina….. too late. The early European settlers and Cherokee got along with each other quite well. So well in fact, they intermarried, which is why everyone on my father’s side of the family has direct lineage to the Eastern Band of Cherokee. The Cherokee adopted many European customs and technology. From European examples, they created an alphabet, their own centralized government, a written constitution, trade with European settlers, etc….( research “five civilized tribes” ). It wasn’t until 1830 that most Cherokee were forced off of their land. They were not forced off by the local European settlers, but by decree of then Democrat President Andrew Jackson in Washington DC. So go wag your finger at someone who’ll buy your woke BS. Thank you for mentioning that Pepsi is from NC (I grew up in New Bern where it was invented). Also huge kudos for making the distinction of Eastern (vinegar) and Western (tomato) NC bbq, and mentioning all three Triangle schools. Cheerwine, Bojangles, and Krispy Kreme are all NC fast food staples, but check out “Cook Out” next time you come through here (i.e. you can get a burger, two quesadillas for sides, and a drink for about $6, not to mention the 50+ milkshakes).
I'm in New Bern and the Cook Out, other than their shakes, is a joke. Their so-called combo has a hamburger the size of a McD's cheeseburger, but $ 5.00 without cheese. Their sides, like onion rings, you get all of 3. And the cole slaw is two fork fulls. There are too many better options.
I just moved to Charlotte last week. You are absolutely correct about the crazy driving, it was quite a shock for me. Apparently if you drive more than 10 miles over the speed limit then you are still driving way too slow 😁

A friend even booked the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Biltmore and said it was amazing(I have NO IDEA what the cost is). We also saw the Reynolds estate which is also worth going to see. These is also an eighteenth centuary (around the Revolutionary War era) town worth seeing all within driving distances.

Born and raised in NC. Lived just about everywhere in the state at one time or another. From Wilmington on the coast to 45 miles north of Asheville in the high country, and most places in between, there is something for everyone there. We moved north recently and found that there are places as nice to live if you look a little.
Grew up in Biltmore Forest, South of Asheville. Played on the Estate grounds all through my childhood. Love the mountains all around the town, but won't ever go back to Asheville. In the pic with the obelisk, yeah the obelisk is gone and there's much controversy regarding that. But going back isn't about the obelisk. AVL has always been a bit weird, but used to be in a quieter way. Went to high school with Roy Williams. Great guy. Pilot Mountain is nice, but definitely not representative of the Blue Ridge; it's too far East. When I lived in AZ and CA in the 1970s, people there laughed at me coming from North Carolina. BoJangles fresh is awesome. If it's sat for a while, that awesomness goes away quickly. Good call pointing out the cost of the Biltmore. As someone living in Asheville, that keeps us from going, and also 100% agree with you about downtown Asheville. We'd love to buy you guys a beer next time you're in Asheville.
I haven’t been to it in years, but I liked the Museum of Life & Science in Durham a lot when I was a kid. I want to check out the Greensboro Science Center. It looks really cool. I had no idea Greensboro had so many attractions. You should check that out, too. It’s not far from Raleigh or Durham.
Mount Mitchell was a really unique experience. It is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and we were literally walking through the clouds. Also, it was about 55 degrees at the summit, which is absurd for NC in June. The trees were also much different up there, just a cool experience
But of course, there is no such town. I think Andy just combined Mt. Airy, where he was from, and Pilot Mountain to come up with the fictional town of Mt. Pilot.
Absolutely love hearing you talk about my home state! Born and raised south of Raleigh - would agree with everything you said! The biltmore is my favorite destination in the state.
You can't actually go to the top of that rocky Devil's Tower like formation at Pilot Mountain but you can hike up to the top of the hill closest to it and get spectacular views and see dozens of hawks constantly circling the tower.
I hope the Outer Banks, or the Mountains are once again the #1 Tourist Destination in NC. For a time, it was Concord Mills Mall. Also, you left out Sun Drop.
When i moved to NC over thirty years ago, I soon found out that many people were from, or knew people from Yonder. I tried to find the town on a map, but never could. Then I was invited to a pig picking and wondered what sort of people had a pig beauty contest. No kidding.
Lines at the Bojangles? I've never seen that. Maybe 3 or 4 cars or a few more at lunch hour. Chic-Fil-A is a whole different story though. Always packed.
Yeah, Pepsi! "Brad's Drink", as it was originally called. I spent the summer of 85 in Maryland and it seemed like RC Cola had one hundred percent of the soda pop market there. Regional foods are culture and are awesome!
Great overview! i have loved living in Raleigh for the past 20 or so years - the best part is that we are almost equal distance to the beach or the mountains, for fun long weekend trips. I think for me the biggest shock was people eating chicken biscuits (Bojangles of course!) for breakfast! :D Long ago, chicken and waffles weren't widely known either so it just seemed weird. Love it though! :D Asheville has gotten more corporate/less Bohemian over the years unfortunately, the beers shown weren't from there either but all good choices from around the state! My favorite brewery in NC right now is Bond Brothers in Cary, NC. They make great beers.
I had to buy almost all-new furniture when I moved to East Carolina. A relative bargained and wheedled and went to Cary (think: the rich folks in Raleigh) and I ended up with a 3-bed house full of top-end furniture (all 3 beds, living room, dining set) for a total of about $2,300. Not low-end stuff, but seriously nice real-wood sleigh beds, a heavy-wood dining set that looks like it belongs in a billionaire's home, and a massive sectional sofa. This is THE place for used furniture as well as new. A lot of Eastern Carolina beyond the ocean-side isn't worth a lot of visiting, most people are thinking Western Carolina when they think of the state being beautiful. People where I'm at (not close to the ocean) are horrible litterbugs.
As a local, I don’t think many tourists are ready for just how much the cities actually have to offer, and how big they are. Particularly Charlotte and Raleigh. We have the theater in the ballet in the orchestra, and whatever type of food you want, if you look, we probably have one or two places to get it. And if you want New York style pizza, we probably have as many places for that as northern jersey in New York. New York has come down here and they have brought the pizza with them.
Lol. What??? Raleigh is a mini-city with absolutely ZERO night life! The bars literally close at 9 or 10 pm. Nobody goes out here anyway. I've lived in 6 different states, and I've been around the world 4 times. Raleigh is the most boring city on the planet. The food is nasty. Cheap chain restaurants or nasty mom and pops that serve everything fried. Raleigh is where you go when you're ready to die... ☠️
@Blind panther vlogs The nightlife in Raleigh is BETTER than Charlotte??? Wow. That's scary. We moved here to Raleigh from Los Angeles a year ago. We literally did EVERYTHING there is to do in Raleigh over a 2-3 day period. This is the most sterile, boring place we've been to. 🤯 We bought a huge custom-built home for cash that we love. Our house and the lack of traffic are the only positives for us.
@@MCLBC not to mention, you can also drink on the street downtown in Raleigh. Plus if you get bored of Raleigh, which you clearly have, you also have Durham and Chapel Hill nearby. And Charlotte it’s the nightlife that we have which is not much or nothing. There’s also the state fair. And I know quite a few bars in Raleigh that stay open until 2 AM, they are mostly on Glenwood Avenue.
im North Carolina Native. i do not recommend Asheville, waste of time. I prefer Boone/Blowing Rock area..... For Asheville, if you cant go see Biltmore estate, i recommend checking out the hotel in Asheville, similar views. great bar! easy parking. recommend to drink a beverage/meal at the THe Omni Park Inn
I used to a own a Jeep Liberty and rented a Chevy Cruze when I visited Charlotte and Asheville in 2013. That little car was not a good thing visually when driving through mountains. Since that trip, I’ve only rented SUVs on my travel because that’s what I need to feel safe. The higher price than compact car really stinks, but it’s more important to feel safe. Also, a shock was when my GPS directed me down a "road" that wasn’t actually a road at least in sense that it wasn’t paved, dirt, or gravel. It was all grass, and I had to turn around out of there once I had space to do so. It would’ve been fun to drive it more if I had my Jeep and in 4W.
Another excellent video! I've been wanting to visit North Carolina for years! I'm waiting for a good friend from my Spain days to go to visit family in South Carolina...then I'll have someone to explore with. Question: are there many vegetarian-friendly places to eat? I definitely have a California palate, so I'm on the lookout for Asian, Mediterranean and vegetarian/vegan restaurants.
@deezoG8 sounds great. I'm not a vegetarian but I stopped eating red meat about 30 years ago, and poultry soon after. I love Thai, Vietnamese and Indian food.
Asheville is full of places like that and a nice city to visit. Plan a day trip to Mount Mitchell. Make sure the weather is clear and you will be amazed.
It's the grand residence of the Vanderbilt family. Lots of fancy rooms with carvings, giant fire places, book cases, etc. It's worth seeing if you are into that kind of thing. They also have a winery and small farm on site. Not quite on the same scale as Versailles but that is the closest approximation in my experience. See how the super rich lived a century ago.
@@carrielynnmiller The Biltmore Estate is the 250-room grand residence of the Vanderbilt family - NOT the Carnegie family! It took 5 years to build and opened with a party in the ballroom Christmas 1895. I’ve visited at least a dozen times over the past 25 years. The history behind the family and the house is fascinating. It receives no funds from the government for upkeep and is still privately owned and operated. No one lives in the house anymore as it is run as a business and tourist attraction now.
If Biltmore costs that much to get in, they can keep it. No wonder they could afford such a CASTLE with how they ripped people off back then and now.$64 and $70. Ain't no way. I'm retired. Not Rich.
I’m in Goldsboro, NC and I moved here from New Mexico in 1996 at about 5 or 6 years old when my dad was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB. Been here ever since. I’ve never really considered myself a true North Carolinian of course but I do love the state. It’s pretty much got something for everyone. Beaches, Mountains, a great amusement park (Carowinds), cities, and if you like flat open cotton fields then come to the coastal plains region where I’m at 😂
Shock is a pretty strong word. Much of the furniture manufacturing has left NC sadly. Also textile mills have left. Wild horses are not on the beaches of NC. There is one island where they have them. Chick fi la has lines. Bojangles does not. I’ve lived here 45 years and I know this state fault well. Crappy drivers are everywhere in the country. I travel for a living and I don’t notice any difference in the way people drive here compared to other parts of the country. Why would it be shocking college basketball is popular here?
Which city is the safest in NC? I am planning to move there and buy some real estate, but can't choose the city, coz I know nothing about this state, would appreciate your advice :)
Ask someone who worked in furniture before it went to China. Comes here and a Sticker from whichever manufacture that had it made placed on it. And the Mountains are the big draw, the Smokies are the most visited place in eastern US.
Brother, i wouldnt mention the water in Asheville. Our waterlines have existed since the biltmore house was made. Weve had multiple times at restaurants ive worked at in downtown where weve had to serve bottled water cause the watermains broke. Almost every house ive lived when it rained hard our water got brown. Lmao. Still an amazing vity. Lived there 16 years and im only 34. Ive loved all over nc. Ill bever leave. Go duke. Best bbq in the nation. Sc aint got shit on us. Except maybe Charleston. Honestly their Asheville.
Two things: BBQ sauce is vinegar based. Some other types of sauces have tomatoes or mustard in them as well. And, there are no lines for Bojangles. With good reason.
I know that you should never judge a place by one person but I had to deal with a man in Apex North Carolina that was the biggest jerk I have ever met in my life and I will say his coworkers hated him as well he left a bad taste in my mouth for NC for a long time
Jerks are common everywhere unfortunately. They were where I used to live and there are some here in NC. But, overall, there are some very nice people. You just have to ignore the jerks! They are in all states and no, you shouldn't judge an entire state from the actions of one. If I had done that, years ago, I would've literally turned into a real mountain hermit and stayed away from everyone
Seriously? You talked about how cool Asheville is and showed video of a Church's Chicken? No folks, that ain't Ashville. It is worth the trip. And it isn't like they have Chicago level crime, they don't. But if you are worried about, go to Boone instead.
I guess the first thing that shocked me when I came to North Carolina was the Obstetrician slapping me on the butt. NC native born at Duke University Hospital. 😏

Morganton NC resident here. Born and raised
Lived there 23 years!!!
Missed 1 of the best spots blowing rock and boone area...skiing and mountain food....
Mount Mitchell was a really unique experience. It is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and we were literally walking through the clouds. Also, it was about 55 degrees at the summit, which is absurd for NC in June. The trees were also much different up there, just a cool experience
That temp isn't absurd for Mt Mitchell. It's rather normal. Grew up in Asheville and have camped up on Mitchell.
Beautiful place! Often gets a lot of snow in the Winter.
The flora around there is similar to New England and Southern Canada. North Carolina’s mountains are on average the tallest in the Appalachians.
0:22 Andy Taylor & Barney Fife were always going to Mount Pilot
NC is the best!
great video!! for someone not here, it was a good video. great presentation.
We are going to Jolo Vineyard at Pilot Mountain tomorrow. Next time you’re in town feel free to reach out.
I live in North Carolina. It's such a pretty state.
Asheville has gotten more corporate/less Bohemian over the years unfortunately, the beers shown weren't from there either but all good choices from around the state! My favorite brewery in NC right now is Bond Brothers in Cary, NC. They make great beers.
Great Video!
Sorry if this is sounds bitchy, but please don't encourage more people to move here ...
Awesome video
You should go to OBX NC!!👍👍👍
This place is epic. Great video
Geez, what isn't "epic" now?
Appreciate you
I had to buy almost all-new furniture when I moved to East Carolina.
Cary: Containment Area For Relocated Yankees.
Livermush, some good stuff!!!!!
@@MCLBC nightlife is better than Charlotte, I have spent extensive time in both cities. When was the last time you have been to Raleigh?
@Blind panther vlogs The nightlife in Raleigh is BETTER than Charlotte???
Wow. That's scary. We moved here to Raleigh from Los Angeles a year ago. We literally did EVERYTHING there is to do in Raleigh over a 2-3 day period. This is the most sterile, boring place we've been to. 🤯
We bought a huge custom-built home for cash that we love.
@@blindpanthervlogs The best times we've had here are when we went out at night in Durham. The place is still extremely boring.
im North Carolina Native. i do not recommend Asheville, waste of time. I prefer Boone/Blowing Rock area..... For Asheville, if you cant go see Biltmore estate, i recommend checking out the hotel in Asheville, similar views. great bar! easy parking. recommend to drink a beverage/meal at the THe Omni Park Inn
You can’t get to heaven in a red canoe, because God’s favorite color is Carolina blue! 😂
Which was the toughest of the hiking routes?
Try hiking the Linville Gorge area in Linville Falls. Some of the trails are pretty steep and rugged.
Had no idea Asheville had higher crime rates. We haven't done much in North Carolina. Thank you
Another excellent video!
Plenty in Charlotte, near the sc border as well, I recommend optimist hall, plenty of options.
@@myrtlebeachsara thank you!!
@@guitarzan2626it sounds beautiful
If the Outer Banks seems too far, ant it is, go to Wilmington. Very cool city but do it in the spring or fall.
I never knew this, NC is never talked about much. So what's inside the Balimore Estate castle? (I know I spelt it wrong, sorry)
We went through it, and there really isn't much to see. If you want to see a real mansion, go to Hearst Castle in Cali.
@@CelticMusicUSA Whoops, thank you :)
If Biltmore costs that much to get in, they can keep it. No wonder they could afford such a CASTLE with how they ripped people off back then and now.$64 and $70. Ain't no way. I'm retired. Not Rich.
In Canada we do not have Cheerwine , we have Rootbeer it tastes like coke + cough syrop '😫 , many people love it 😋 😘
I’m in Goldsboro, NC and I moved here from New Mexico in 1996 at about 5 or 6 years old when my dad was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB. Been here ever since. I’ve never really considered myself a true North Carolinian of course but I do love the state. It’s pretty much got something for everyone. Beaches, Mountains, a great amusement park (Carowinds), cities, and if you like flat open cotton fields then come to the coastal plains region where I’m at 😂
I wouldn't spend too much time in line for fast food. The hype in the US (chic fil, in and out) is unreal.
Cheerwine is GOATed. It’s like Cherry coke with more cherry than coke
Which city is the safest in NC? I am planning to move there and buy some real estate, but can't choose the city, coz I know nothing about this state, would appreciate your advice :)
You can google that but every city has its good places and bad places. All of them are better than Chicago, DC, NYC, Detroit, etc in terms of crime.
Great puppetry tradition. Particularly Papaerhand. Look 'em up.
Los dulces muy bueno 🎉🎉
No wonder that my lead foot felt at home😜🤣🤣🤣🚔🏎️🏁🚔🤣
Ask someone who worked in furniture before it went to China. Comes here and a Sticker from whichever manufacture that had it made placed on it. And the Mountains are the big draw, the Smokies are the most visited place in eastern US.
You are so right. Most the furniture nowadays is just at best assembled here. Sad but true.
Lived and loved NC … Bojangles not so much
Mark, you can say hella, it’s fine lol
Woud you recomend camp america to get to know the USA?
North Carolina is one place where it's still possible to purchase a home without being wealthy too!
This is only true if you are retired.

@@raziel4559 I don't know what you mean. I receive listings weekly and just now am looking at a home for $20k.
@@bela-sofia34 99.99999% chance it says "must be 55+ to live here"
@@raziel4559 No, I am not ever looking at senior apartments. I am speaking of an actual house on land.

Is there a destination where he does NOT comment on the driving? Drivers are bad everywhere.
Unfortunately there is a LOT less furniture made here.
Two things: BBQ sauce is vinegar based. Some other types of sauces have tomatoes or mustard in them as well.
And, there are no lines for Bojangles. With good reason.
I know that you should never judge a place by one person but I had to deal with a man in Apex North Carolina that was the biggest jerk I have ever met in my life and I will say his coworkers hated him as well he left a bad taste in my mouth for NC for a long time
Apex? He was probably a New Yorker lol
0:05 That is not where Pilot Mountain State Park is...
People’s Porter is made in Winston-Salem. And it’s killer.
Seriously? You talked about how cool Asheville is and showed video of a Church's Chicken? No folks, that ain't Ashville. It is worth the trip. And it isn't like they have Chicago level crime, they don't. But if you are worried about, go to Boone instead.
Like 4 of them were food 😂
I guess the first thing that shocked me when I came to North Carolina was the Obstetrician slapping me on the butt. NC native born at Duke University Hospital. 😏
