  • Two women fall through ice and discuss the role that fear plays in holding us back from life.
    This video was shot at ReWild University under professional supervision with safety checks in place. Cold water immersion creates a physiological condition of cold shock that can cause cardiac arrest. Obviously, don't try this unless you are similarly under professional supervision and have rescue personnel in place.

    I used to be painfully shy growing up. How I got over it was putting myself in uncomfortable positions and not remaining in my comfort zone. That's exactly how I describe it. And I have the tendency of ignoring discomfort but I could do better. These past three years, especially this year, I've experienced a lot of discomfort though as I explored the beliefs I had regarding several things. Your videos are awesome. I'm so glad to have found them. I've seen about 3 or 4 and I'll keep watching. I live in FL and I'm a poor college student but hopefully one day I'll have the chance tu take one of your classes. Self sufficiency is extremely important and nature is spectacular.

      cumensu This work you've been doing is so fruitful. We're taught to avoid and even fear discomfort, but you've found ways to go into discomfort and discover the treasures waiting there. That's inspiring for all of us!
      Would love to see you up here someday!

    I just have to say, what I really like about your videos, is that they are showing a "normal" person doing it. Usually, it's either super hardcore tactical special forces stuff, or mixed with some esoteric BS. Thank you for all your work!

    The boarding school I went to was one of those places where the seasons were determined by the date, not the weather. For example no radiators until official winter, and thin summer dresses even if the summer started cold.
    So on the appointed date in my first year, I and those of my class who said we could swim were to be tested for our swimming skills in the (outdoor) swimming pool. We were told to jump in and swim a width. It was freezing! We were struggling for breath and at best could manage a bit of doggie paddle, and even those of us who managed a width took far longer than the time limit.
    But nobody drowned.
    I was hardy enough back in those days, but developed an aversion for being cold for too long or when I have little prospect of getting warm again soon.
    So if I were to do this challenge, I would want a hot tub and and dry clothes waiting for me right next to the hole. lol

    @leoangere5310 9 лет назад

    "It hurts more .. or _sensations_ more" Haha, I've corrected myself also, trying to re-wire my brain about the nature of pain/discomfort. I understand Rebecca's comment about fearing that the discomfort will continue to escalate... my ventures onto the snow barefooted have gotten considerably longer since the first time, takes a while to really notice the 'pain'. But when the discomfort begins, and keeps getting more intense, there's that fear of it going too far if I stay out. It's a process.

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  9 лет назад

      Leo Angere Absolutely. Jen really hit on something when she shifted her language. And you're seeing into it as well with your barefoot snow exercises. Pain isn't as clear-cut as we've been told, is it?

    I really like your suggestions at the end of the video. I'm going to try the walking in the rain once I'm able to walk again without the walker (it's pretty muddy here). Our kids here love running and playing in the rain. I was brought up to believe that you must protect yourself from the elements but now I understand that we have to embrace them as well. Thank you for the highly encouraging video and thank your friends for being so funny and sweet but at the same time, really courageous and determined. 🤗😇😁

    I think Jens face said it all. She didn't know what point she would break through although expecting it!! Rebecca was more mind set ready as the ice was broken but good on them for doing the experience. The big danger is going under the ice , but I woukd like to think I could self rescue after watching your videos although I will not practice it on purpose. Bet those blankets were cozy after that!! Cheers Mary

      Mary McN Thanks so much for this comment, Mary. You certainly caught that expression! I agree -- kudos to them both. As you recognized, the experience was different for each of them on a number of levels, including the ice being still whole for Jen and then broken for Rebecca. I'm also happy to hear that you feel that you could perform a self-rescue after seeing the videos. That was my hope, that these videos could take a situation that can be life-threatening and give people the confidence to get themselves out if they ever do find themselves falling through ice.=) Kenton

    A lot of these videos the people are not wearing much cloths, this doesn't help me out much, when I'm ice fishing I have 3 layers of cloths, snow pants & big boots on. Once your wet that's a lot more water weight to deal with

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  7 лет назад

      True! I have done this with more clothes (we're often doing it with less just to have less clothes to dry out later on), and it's still viable. You'll feel the extra weight as you come out of the water, and it can mean that you crack through the ice more as you're trying to get out, but if you spread your weight and use this method, I haven't ever had it fail me (and I practice it more than I probably should =)

    that was a good one. I really wanted to do an ice break thru this winter but couldn’t find any pro to watch. I had my brother ready and ok ice on the pond but ran out of time on easter. Do you have any advice on how to go about it safely? I’m likely going to have to substitute our river for an actual break thru and try again next year once I’ve learned more of the safety standards

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  6 лет назад

      Hmmm. Safety precautions for something this dangerous . . . =) First, make sure it's a lake, not a river, as the current can pull you under the ice and that is a very un-fun way to die. If you have strong rope, you can do a lasso that goes under the arms of the person who will fall through, and make sure you have someone strong enough to pull you out. Ideally one also has an EMT or other medically trained person along in the rare event of the cold shock affecting the heart. When I do this with people I do a lot of pre-training to ensure they won't panic. The way someone will really get in trouble is if they panic, in which case all the safety stuff might not do any good because they are thrashing and not participating in the rescue. Some ice baths prepare the way, making sure that the person can experience extreme cold and remain calm.
      =) Kenton

    • @porkcheeks
      @porkcheeks 6 лет назад

      :-) a river because its close to home and cold. The ice will be gone when I get back home. I do know enough to not walk on frozen rivers (tho you wouldn't know I know so thanks for the warning). I was going to use the rope approach. I now have a year to figure out if there's a better way. Much appreciated.

      Taylor Hopkins Hi Taylor!AWESOME that you're doing all this at 13! Even a garden! Woohoooo! I definitely hear you about being concerned that our civilization could tumble to the ground . . . for a lot of folks, that's what gets them started. These skills are sort of an 'ultimate insurance policy'. But after time, I've found that people replace that fear-based approach with a joy-based approach. I can actually hear the joy in your writing, with your passion about connecting with the wild! =)I live in Wisconsin. I do run a school, called ReWild University. ReWildUniversity yes I am doing this for about 6-7 months now. It's a good way to overcome the gasp reflex by relaxing, breathing out while going into the cold water. Personally I use it for vitality and haven't been sick since I started the combined breathing and cold water combo. The breathing method is very simple. It's just one technique that he does.
