Hey everyone, I've seen a lot of comments about rejection and being put off applying so i thought id try address it. Of course not everyone can attend but the rejection here is mostly based on not being marginal enough in terms of people from your area or school at Oxbridge as opposed to ability. I know it probs seems daft me saying 'rejection from UNIQ shouldn't deter application to Oxford' because I didn't get rejected from UNIQ buuut honestly UNIQ only improves accessibility by showing candidates that Oxford isn't just a place for rich/posh/white/legacy students thus increasing confidence amongst "non stereotypically oxford" students to apply. It would be extremely sad and of course counterintuitive for people to be put off applying bc of a UNIQ rejection, especially seen as the circumstances of rejection are likely out of your control (I.e. postcode) and wouldn't make a difference when applying to the actual uni. In terms of why we're making these videos, as someone from a pupil premium (free school meals eligible for a period), working class, state school, first gen etc background I can't thank UNIQ enough for what it has given me and I would feel like I wasn't giving back enough to repay them if I didn't spread the word about it. Eve and I are in positions of privilege now being at Oxford - we are incredibly lucky to be here and we both know that. The least we can do in this position of privilege is try to help anyone possible get the same opportunities that we did and hopefully shed light on aspects of applying that we didn't get. I hope you all can understand that titles and thumbnails are for views purposes and of course, the REAL reason we got in is because we worked our butts off all throughout school, made a goal and pushed through to reach it. UNIQ simply made that goal seem actually doable. If you don't get in please dont take it personally (rich coming from me I know). Understand that they physically cant help everyone in need and that IS NOT YOUR FAULT. You can still reach the end goal if you push for it and have confidence in your abilities regardless of help a long the way. I believe in you xxxxx
The video should have mentioned the funding of Uniq. The Helsington Foundation was established to deliver opportunities for disadvantaged young talent giving under privileged state school and college students the chance to experience higher education at its best. Unless you are from a disadvantaged enough background it is probably not worth applying. It's a shame Uniq's website and these videos promoting it could not be more upfront about this to prevent people wasting their time. Plus there's only 750 places a year on average.
@@RosieCrawford No need to apologise. I love Eve's videos. I'll check out your channel as well. Ha ha. I did not more than divide 6000 by 8 (the figure on the website). Good that there's now more places.
I went on UNIQ in the summer for geography at Hertford College, was honestly one of the most amazing weeks I’ve had, completely free, I met a lot of the department, got to know oxford, made amazing friends and most importantly made me love my subject even more and convinced me to apply! I’ve had my interviews now which was another amazing week meeting (and catching up with) amazing friends and amazing tutors. Honestly whatever the outcome I have a lot to thank Oxford for already, what an incredible environment to be in, I have learned so much. Thank you for this video Eve!!
I would love to do geography or geology at uni and especially oxford. Do you think somebody from Leicester who hasn’t gone to like a grammar school like me would have a chance?
xabbie. jeanx Geography is a heavily private school subject at oxford right now, so I think anyone that has the potential from a state school background will always stand out, especially when applying to summer schools - honestly just apply it’s 100% worth it!!! I would honestly just say do lots of research, read a lot of books (physical, environmental and human geography for oxford!) and make sure the degree is right for you, bear in mind oxford geography is completely interdisciplinary upon applying Good luck!!! Geography is such a great subject 😄😄😄
Hey Eve! I was wondering if you could do a video on things you did on the Summer of Year 12 that you think helped you get your place at Oxford? Or just University related things you did in general? I know it's a while ago now but I'm starting to apply for things and I'd love to hear what you did before you went back in year 13. xx
Widening access is SO important, but programs like this can be equally damaging as helpful- especially if a large proportion of applicants are rejected. What better way to discourage a state school applicant than reject them from a widening access program? I know I would feel like there was no point wasting an application on Oxbridge when I couldn’t even make it to their summer school program. You say at the start of the video “no one knows about it” but then later say “UNIQ is more competitive than Oxford itself for some courses”. If it’s that competitive you and UNIQ should be focusing on increasing the number of students you accept NOT encouraging hundreds more to apply. The only thing this video ensures is that now even more state school students will be rejected from UNIQ and even more state school students will be left feeling that an application to Oxbridge is an application wasted.
Hellooo the reason we're working with them on this is to raise awareness and also because around 400 more places have been added this year for brand new subjects! Much of the summer school is run off donations as it is completely free from travel to accommodation to meals so ofc it costs the uni a lot (not that theyre short of cash but believe me that's reserved for state of the art research ugh 🙄). This year UNIQ received a huge donation from the Moritz-Heyman family to increase the places and help follow demand. Hope that answers your message xxx
See I love that you promote UNIQ, but most people I know who applied to it got rejected! It's kinda disheartening to hear you talk about that as the main reason you get in when it's not available to everyome. I undoubtedky understand that it's super important to share it but please just bear in mind that not everyone can get on!!
Well I’m sorry you think that but it is the reason Rosie had the confidence to apply, and there are plenty of other people who get in for different reasons, so I stand by my choice :) x
Eve Bennett I do see what you mean, but for me, the application process has changed a lot since you applied! It was only something like 200 words for the personal statement which really threw me off when it came to writing my UCAS - I really truly appreciate what you're doing w uniq because I know it'll help lots of people but yea, I've just been applying and have found your kinda 'as a state school student I only got in because of uniq' a little unnerving - if u could promote other access stuff too that'd be incredible!!
While it's disheartening trust me. Uniq is there for targeted groups of young people. So many people don't even know it exists. And some people won't apply because they don't realise how important it can be. Also the people who go on it are probably the most in need/from deprived areas. A lot of people I know have been accepted onto uniq or the Cambridge version but they are all LAC or young carers. They aren't just students. I don't know a single person (apart from RUclipsrs) who got to go on Uniq which aren't from very deprived areas, LAC, young carers, ESL students or from an ethnic minorities. While uniq isn't an automatical acceptance it does increase your chance of being accepted and that is why they have targeted groups. It's to encourage the under represented students to apply and also help them to be accepted.
You both just have such a calming presence! It’s like 3 weeks until the UCAS deadline and I’ve only just decided to apply to University at all so I really don’t know why I’m here 😂💗
I believe you went to a single sex selective Grammar School? Not really the State school of most pupils. Not that don’t admire you getting in versus certain people I’ve seen on RUclips.

Don’t know if you’ll ever see this but the applications for UNIQ 2019 have started today. I’ve read somewhere that appli can needs to write a short essay explaining why they should be accepted for the course, but ai haven’t seen this in the application. There’s a section for special consideration (illness/ death of relative close to exam dates). Is this where I need to write this ‘essay’? Or is there no such thing

The thing that's annoying and wrong about summer schools is that you can have a priveleged person whose parents went to Oxbridge who goes to the best state school in the country WHO CAN GO but a bursary student at a private school (just for sixth form, and not all private schools are good quality) whose parents left school at 15 and single parent family, young carer etc etc etc WHO CANNOT APPLY like it just doesn't make sense in terms of social mobility. Also apparently attending summer schools makes no difference to your application- its much better to read books etc - that's according to an admissions tutor.

Is it harder to get good grades at top universities compared to other universities? I usually get the best grade, and at my uni. around 3-8% is in the top tier. Now, if I apply to a elite university, will a lot more be demanded of me, if I want a decent grade? I am not the kind of student that sits and study all day, I'm actually quite lazy.
