      Exactly, surviving =/= thriving!!! The only application of this data is if you are in p erfect health, are under 45, and never see people that are over that age/have preexisting health conditions then its totally okay to fuck around. but i agree with the fact that majority of these restrictions have been pointless and have driven quality of life for most people to shit. we are here for a good time, not a long time.

      Your second point is fair, but your first point is a little more tricky. Most people who get covid will not experience "long covid" or post covid symptoms, it is at around 20-37% (see the CDC, Medical News, Time Magazine). Even then, most who do will only experience minor symptoms. Even then, most who do experience harsher symptoms are mostly going to already be in the at risk population.

      I hate to say this folks, but we can't shut the planet down to make a virus go away. It would take over 100 years of perfectly clean global super quarantine just to make the flu go away for a single generation. The flu will just come back m8. Same with many other viruses able to survive outside of humans. I'm not exactly sure that the Rona is gonna be an exception.

    • @ChiggenWingz
      @ChiggenWingz 2 года назад +111

      An analogy that can also be used is car accidents and car accidents that result in deaths. Theres a LOT more car accidents that don't result in death, but result in injury ranging from extremely dilapidating for the rest of the life, through to wounded for a period of time, to a slight bruise.
      Covid is the same, while the death statistic is what you see in the news, everyone else will have stories from friends or family ranging from "yeah all I had was a sniffle", though to "I cant extert myself otherwise I have trouble breathing and its been like this for months now".
      The precautions in place to reduce covid spread and the vaccine are like having crossing walks, seat belts and traffic lights; they dont stop traffic accidents, but they sure as hell reduce them.

      @@banana_na Even the data he showed is terrifying. Out of 37000 people, almost a thousand die? How many families are ii that 37000? People aren't numbers in a void, they're part of communities, families, and have friends. Next how many of those people survived by taking up space in the hospital? How many lives were lost because everybody got covid and putting people on ventilators has become the prime goal at hospitals? How many of those people who died had children or were married? How will they survive the loss of half or possibly all of their income? These are all terrifying questions to me. With all the "fear" the media is throwing down our throat a huge percentage of our population doesn't even want to do anything period to combat these questions. We will have to answer them, not the people in imaginary 37000 land.

    I think it would have been better to calculate hospitalization rates rather than death rates. Using death statistics gives the idea that you either have no symptoms at all or drop dead, which isn't fully true. If you instead look at hospitalization you are able to see the more realistic group of people who didn't die but were severely negatively affected physically and even financially.

    allright it's been fucking bugging me for so long how this misses the point of covid so much (imo).
    First off, it's not just about the deaths; getting covid can lead to reduced lung capacity; there's a number of issues that can arise from the rona; from nothing, to pneumonia to sepsis (gradual shutdown of organs, if survived brings permanent lung injuries). Some patients have even shown to have scarring in the lungs, and whether the effects are permanent or not from this scarring is unknown.
    Secondly, yes, only a small percentage of people die from it but if we look at the infectivity we get a disease that will spread beyond rapidly; to put it into perspective if you get the flu, on average you will infect 1.4 people (if such a division exists), if those people go out and infect more and more and more (untill you have 10 generations of infections) you're responsible for 1.3^10 = roughly 14 people getting sick. And here comes the kicker which noone sees coming; Coronavirus' infections are much higher, on average *3*.
    If we run that through the same calculation; if 10 generations of infections happen you get 3^10 = 59.049 people. From ONE infection.
    I agree the coronavirus is overhyped but its infectivity and negative side-effects should NOT be overlooked like you do in this video. I love you Grade but goddamn, this missed the mark IMO.

In fact, some hospitals in the country entered a state of collapse during the second wave.

    Ok so the main problem with just looking at death rates is, that death rate should always be compared to infection rates. A good example of this is Italy, where people just ended up in mass graves because nobody could keep up with the body count. Even though 2% doesn't seem high, if it's 2% of just a million (and there were many more cases than that), that still 20000 dead. And Italy had a much higher deathrate than that because their health system couldn't keep up with the insane demands put on it. Also yeah, it is by far the most dangerous to people who are already suffering from old age or other health issues. Problem with that is, that while it might not be as dangerous for young healthy people, we can still give it to people who don't have the advantage of being young and healthy. So in order to protect the vulnerable people in society, the healthy people have to avoid getting it as well.
    Also death isn't the only issue with covid. There are many cases of lasting effects such as brain damage and lung damage even in young people as well. It isn't a case of "if you survive it, then you won't have any issues at all". You might not, but you also just might.
    Rant over.

    There's a lot more things that needs to be considered. Firstly there are many variants and the fatality and transmissibility rates will vary between them. I have a friend from Wuhan who told me that one of the original variant that existed in Wuhan was a lot more fatal and the COVID situation there was a lot worse than other countries, such as in the UK.
    Secondly COVID is very transmissible. Even if it only kills 1% of the people that is a lot. You used 37000 in your example, but realistically, if it is not controlled by lockdown, etc, if it infects like a billion people then millions will die. A virus with a high infection rate and low mortality can probably end up killing more people than a virus with just a very high mortality rate, as such a virus will kill of its own host before they can transmit. So a low mortality rate is not necessarily a good thing.
    A very important thing is that a lot of these people with COVID who may or may not end up dead will go to the hospital. The increase in the hospitalisation rates due to COVID can overburden the health care system. People who are supposed to have surgeries and stuff may have to get postponed because there aren't enough doctors and facilities. So an important thing to compare is how the increase in patients in a country compares to the capability of their healthcare system. If the health care system is overwhelmed due to insufficient funding in that country (like the NHS) then it can easily kill a lot more people as a secondary impact.
    I am no expert on COVID and I thought of these points. I am sure those who are actually into it will be aware of a lot more. It is important to consider all of these points as well.

    To me it would be pretty horrifying if out of 50 people I knew would die just of covid. This is apart from the fact that a lot of people who get the virus but survive, have long lasting effects that fuck up their lives. My uncle for example isn't included in this death statistic. However, he lay unconscious on the ICU for weeks before thankfully waking up, but he will never go back to being even close to his old self. He might be a pretty severe case, however a lot of young people just like me will continue to have long lasting symptoms, like being tired all the time, to the degree that they're not even able to do their job. Furthermore, these statistics only account for the situation where we actually took pretty severe measures to contain the virus. Death tolls per infection would've been way higher at the point where our healthcare system wouldn't be able to provide adequate care for all patients anymore. As a matter of fact, this already sort of happened, because what at least is the case according to medical professionals in my country, a lot of plannable healthcare had to be cancelled or delayed. This has also lead to many preventable deaths. Then there is the toll on the health care workers themselves, which I've personally experienced, due to my girlfriend and other family members working in healthcare. I know this is a long ramble, however there are just too much points to be adressed when you just tell us to look at the numbers. Numbers by themselves don't mean anything, they need context and interpretation.

The morality rate isn't the huge issue, it's the infection rate. They affect each other. More infections = more deaths. The reason why people didn't die as fast is berceuse we had restrictions, online school and similar and thus, less people got infected with it which means one less grandma dead. It also means much less strain on health care. Many people haven't gotten the treatment - covid or not - they needed and many therefore died, regardless of having covid.

    It is not the deadlyness, it is how quickly it spreads, and how many gets so sick they can't do work. you are not sick one week and then back to normal the next. Most suffer sever hit to their condition and muscle mass. Buddy of mine was not back to 100% for a year, but it took a month to shake the fatigue, and further three before he could start martial arts again. and for nearly eight more to get back to the strength he had before covid.
    It is this that is dangerous, as it removes people for a long time from the workforce, and if you do labour, instead of a cushy office work, you might need months to get back into full time work hours.
    second is precisely that it kills our elders, I got grandparents and friends that can't risk getting sick with this virus(grandpa's lungs are especially in poor order, the main area damaged by this virus), and them dying because I spread it to them is what really got the fear.

    I've sort of been saying this since the very beginning, to the people who are super frightened of it. BUT the problem with this is that it treats people with underlying illnesses or older people like they're expendable or something.
    Main thing is all the lockdowns are because the hospitals got overwhelmed. It may only be old people and people with underlying conditions but there were so many at the same time that there wasn't enough ventilators to help them or bed spaces, and all the other parts of the hospitals run low on staff and space etc., which is why we did all the lockdowns and wear masks and stuff.
    But ultimately, yes, MOST of us don't have to be as scared as a lot of people seem to be, and the press have had a field day with the fear stuff, but do spare a thought for the people who ARE old and DO have underlying conditions, they're not expendable, ya know?

    • @Soulessblur
      @Soulessblur 2 года назад +7

      Exactly. The reason young, healthy people have such a large survival rate NOW is because our taking strides in reducing spread helps with hospital resources. Obviously most of them are stretched thin already, but if everybody just decided to say "screw it, I'm not 60, I'm safe", then there'd be a lot more sick people, a lot less resources to go around, and an increased death rate than we currently have. Low numbers doesn't automatically mean a disease isn't dangerous, it could just mean we're doing something right.

    • @Lerpzoid

      This is a great summation of it yes. To add to it, my partners mum works in a care home for the elderly. At the start of last year there were around 84 patients. By summer it was around 30. Most dying from covid. Each one someone's mum, dad, friend etc. The opinion of "well lockdown shouldn't have happened because it only effects older people" is daft. You're basically saying "well f them they're expendible". Not to mention if the hospitals become overwhelmed because we didn't lock down, then how many more people would have died?

    • @rattenwahn
      @rattenwahn 2 года назад +8

      This is the thing I dislike about the statistic he put out. Yea the numbers don't lie. But you leave out a lot of the finer details, like calculating those numbers up to the whole world population, ignoring that there's more after effects than just dying, and also the reality of being able to be infected more than once and maybe every year without proper vaccination and safety. Suddenly all the healthy people below 45 that had covid once, are now the "prior condition" group and may have a bad case the next year, and a worse the next... There's a lot of stuff that got ignored or dismissed in this video.
      And I think 800 something people dying from 37000 is still a lot of people that wouldn't have died otherwise (at least not at that point in time)

    • @o55oono

      Also, with hospitals filled up and doctors/nurses run ragged, it makes things worse for other people trying to get treatment at the hospital. Wait times have exploded and you are discouraged from going at all if it isn't critical (potentially missing a vital diagnosis etc.).
      Further, while it doesn't KILL younger people, plenty get permanent lung damage. Wouldn't be surprised if a decade from now we see lung cancer rates explode in that population.

    •2% of a population is still a really big number. 4,846,981 covid deaths have occurred globally at the time of this video's publishing (info was taken directly the WHO's website).
    •Why is the death rate the only thing that's talked about? Why don't we talk about the amount of patients in the hospital due to covid compared to other medical conditions? Why don't we talk about the amount of people who survived but are suffering long term effects? There's more to covid than just a death rate. And the more it spreads and mutates, the more severe it will become.

      That's a good wisdom

    • @aunteater4902
      @aunteater4902 2 года назад +6

      A. 4million is a big number if we consider small numbers that we consider in our daily life. Like how many spoons of sugar in a single cup of tea. Then 4 million is a lot. "That's a lot of sugar" you might tell me. And I'd nod with a toothless smile.
      But if we consider it relative to what it's actually relevant to, it's a very small number. If we took 8 billion bulls and 8 billion people and shut them in a room for one and a half years, and only 4 million people died, that'd be a really low number. You'd suddenly feel pretty safe sitting with a bull for one and a half years. Because you know that 4 million out of 8 billion is a really low number. And if someone then told you that 3 of 4 million were already old, injured, sick or dying then you'd suddenly feel a lot safer about sitting with the bull than, for instance, idk, living in Fort greene, or using heavy machinery, or driving a car.
      After all, driving a car will kill 1.3 million perfectly healthy people per year and vehicle saturation is less than 20% globally. Imagine the numbers in a year and a half if everyone could drive. We'd expect that to be about 10 million if everything scaled linearly.
      B. Because hospitalizations is a response and not a result. We could overreact to the flu and treat it the same way, and then if we looked at hospitalizations we'd be convinced that flu is also deadly by that logic.
      But regardless hospitalizations are 0.0046% of Americans and 0.0056% of Britons, 75% over 55, 89.3% with underlying illnesses.
      Covid will hospitalise 6 people per 1 million who do not have another illness. And 4 of those 6 will be the elderly.
      C. Mutation won't stop through hospitalizations, in fact that's how you breed illnesses. And in that process that's how you breed resistant illnesses. Like MRSA.
      Flu is incredibly fast to reproduce generations and mutates extremely easily hence why there's so many strains every year dependant on regions. But you stay home with the flu so only you get it and then your body kills it off and you can go back to being around other people. So it doesn't get resistant to medications and it doesn't spread and create millions of different cultures each breeding new strains, increasing the rate of mutation.

    This video is a pretty great analysis of the raw numbers, but I think it's worth mentioning that a) a person can be infected with Covid more than once, at least twice from the alpha strain and then reinfected by any other strain, which rerolls the dice for them, and b), surviving covid isn't necessarily a "great, you're fine" deal. There are a slew of health conditions that you are far more likely to develop, or are a direct side effect of covid. I don't know the numbers, but in any case as much as covid's death toll is overhyped by the media i don't think that fear is unwarranted. Nobody wins if we let covid run rampant across the planet, both from its mutagenic potential and because it sets a bad precedent for what happens when we're met with a future potential threat.

    This is a very difficult topic to talk about, In my case we just came out of a 312 day lock down, It saved many peoples lives from covid, but also changed/ruined so many others, all sports clubs around have run out of money, same as small businesses, everyone was really behind on school work and antidepressants sold were at an all-time high. In my opinion, the lockdown here ruined more lives than it has saved

      No. Thats just wrong. Disease spread exponentially and over the world. Think if every one in your country got covid but no one recieved any medical help at all. For many months.
      Not just people suffering from cocid. People with deadly injury, rare disease, cancer, anything at all.
      The danger with covid is that its infectious as fuck and without any drastic covid measre response, every one would have gotten it.
      A fixed number of people can recieve medical help(in a country) and that number is negligeable compared to the size of a country.
      So Basically, 99.99% of people wouldn't recieve any kind of medical help.
      Just think about that.

      -> all evidence of infection points to people actually staying at home, because of the psychological damage done to people through fear mongering. it lowers people's immune system. and is therefor more vulnerable to viruses. netherlands report 3/4 infections are spread within homes.
      -> yes, it is infectious. but locking people up is just throwing fuel to the fire. as I explained above.
      -> you are pretending that if everyone didn't get locked up. everyone would have had covid already.
      -> Countries like Florida and Sweden already demonstrated that this is a lie.

      In the Netherlands there was a investigation (WOB) by an old executive from CBS. it turned out that in the Netherlands 100.000 years of people's lives were "saved".
      however this lockdown also caused over 500.000 years of people's lives.
      not to mention the horrible economic aftereffects and psychological damage done to people.
      one day people are gonna be held responsible.
