people can complain about her rudeness, but she was the perfect choice of comedian for the times - I'm 100% sure this will end up a future classic. She descends all the way to the bottom were things are actually at. Congrats for all this courage Michelle Wolf! I hope we can rise above it all again soon.

Hah, you know, I'm not typically of fan of "rudeness", but you are so right....this is a classic. It's 2023 as I write this, and for some reason I wanted to find it and watch it again. She hits every joke right on the money, and maybe what is telling is that when you look at the audience, many are not finding it funny. All I can say is it shows how many are out of touch, be they politicians or journalists in the audience. Ms. Wolf calls out all "mainstream news" for its sensationalism, which I personally find unwatchable. The entire piece is not only jaw-droppingly funny, it is a point-blank accurate assessment of Washington in 2018. Brilliant indeed, and even some of her crude language is nothing compared to the cesspool of policitians! and "news" organizations.

My favorite line is when she says "You shoulda done more research before you got me to do this". That was great. A nod to the fact that she's a comedian first and foremost, and all she cares about is making people laugh. Her jokes are meant to be rough, comedy in general is meant to be rough, and she just dgaf. Gotta love that.

Hate the media as much as the next guy, but constant updates about 30,000 service laterals to homes being replaced, miles of pipeline being ripped out of the ground and replaced with new main, and approximately 2 more years of work still being needed (yes it's going to be overall at least a 6 year to completely fix, re-doing the majority of the infrastructure of a 100,000 person populated city isn't easy) probably isn't very interesting to the general public... Probably why they aren't covering it all that frequently...
If people actually cared they could just go on their water utility website and get all the information they could possibly want on there
Cynthia O - I agree with you on a shift of focus being needed. However, I would suggest that the issue is more suited to be reported on at the state level as opposed to the national level. The west coast has their own problems with water shortages... I'm not sure they would be too fond of their news reporting another state's (similar) issue. I like your comment though.

As someone who spends most of my life avoiding confrontation, my brain could not compute when I saw her just sit down in the same room as everyone she just roasted. She is braver than I.
There are only two types of quiet audiences at a comedy. Usually its because the comedian just isn't that funny, but every once in awhile, its because a comedian at the top of their game is telling the uncomfortable truth, and laughing is the litmus test that separates everyone else, from those who should be ashamed.
I’d estimate that 80-90% of her jokes were at the Republican Party’s expense. Do you think 80-90% of the crowd is Republican? Hardly. The audience was quiet because the material just wasn’t good. She relied too much on one liners and lazy jokes. She’s supposed to be a professional, but her jokes were so gimmicky and obvious. How many “how broke is he?” jokes did she do? I’m surprised she is getting criticized for her SHS jokes, because they definitely weren’t epic burns (they’d have to be funnier and way meaner). She should be criticized for sucking at her job though

I do agree that a portion of the jokes were "low hanging fruit", also adding in a bit of excessive vulgarity by sexualizing topics unnecessarily. I thought a good 30-50% landed well (with me), but I do understand how, if I had different beliefs, that some stuff was blatantly offensive. BUT, look at who she is roasting! Trump, Huckabee, Conway, Pruitt! Amoral, xenophobic, conmen bullies. People who DAILY LIE TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ABOUT EVERYTHING, normalizing the insanity of Trump and his administration, elected because Politically Correct talk is for snowflakes! She wanted to remind everyone of who these people are, with the same respect these people have treated the truth that binds this country together.
An insight into the goal and inspiration for what she had to say was a quote she carried to the dinner and read to herself before her performance - "Be true to yourself. Never apologize. Burn it to the ground.”

John M I’m just curious...what do you think Trump lies about? In my opinion, he’s pretty upfront about who he is and what he wants to do for the country. He’s kept a lot of his campaign promises (which is a good or bad thing depending on who you ask). I feel like he is the president he campaigned as. Also, they’ve been investigating the Russia collusion for over a year, and they have not found anything to charge him with yet. You know if there was anything at all to impeach him with, they would have used it by now. There have been some people caught lying from his campaign, but it seems like a lot of the people getting in (potential) trouble right now are Obama era bureaucrats (Comey, Clapper, McCabe, etc). I don’t agree with everything Trump does, but I don’t feel like he is as evil as the left makes him out to be. He’s been the president for 15 months now, and the world is still functioning. The economy is improving, ISIS is not front page news anymore, unemployment is low, NoKo might denuclearize...there is a lot of things to be happy about right now.

A perfect roast.... ruthless and scathing. What was the problem? Roasts are suppose to be no holds barred. The drama is ridiculous.
Why don't they call it a roast then, instead of a correspondence dinner? And I thought even a roast was supposed to be funny and lighthearted, this was just rude and false and in bad taste.
A lot of the drama has to do with the fact that in a normal roast, or the Washington Correspondents Dinner, the president, or whoever is being roasted, comes up afterwards or before and is able to roast back the person roasting them. Because Trump was not present people see this part of the dinner as inappropriate or an "attack" against the Presidency.
Imagine if it was the right roasting the left, and then you see the hypocrisy.

She did exactly what she is supposed to do: make half the audience crack up and half the audience uncomfortable. The Correspondents dinner is supposed to be satirical and satire means barbed or it isn’t satire at all but sycophantic mush. Comedians are supposed to make jokes at the expense of famous and powerful people. That’s what they exist for. The court jester was the only one who could make fun of the king without getting his head lopped off. You knew someone was a tyrant if they beheaded the jester. Same as it ever was.

Yep, freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. I love that we can say unpopular things in this country and not have to worry that we've been "Too offensive". Oh, wait. Isn't that why we're getting hate speech protests and restricting free expression college campuses to small "Free Speech Zones" and having "controversial speakers" disrupted, uninvited, and threatened?
