    On the morning of 9th February 1855, the people of mid-Devon awoke to find their homes smothered by a thick blanket of snow. But it soon became apparent that whilst they had been sleeping, some unknown entity had apparently cut a path straight through their county, leaving a mysterious trail where its feet had passed upon the ground. Who or what was responsible for the Devil’s Footprints?
    We'll be doing a livestream interview with Radiant Creators this Sunday (28th February) at 10:30 GMT. Come and join the whole team, face reveals and all, and take part in the audience Q&A afterwards. Radiant Creators can be found here: / @radiantcreators

    I love how the when the constable was summoned by the son of a farmer in the early hours of the morning, he agreed to go check things out but told the kid to build a snowman for his daughters before departing from his house. That's the most charmingly benign abuse of police authority ever. "If you want my help, it's going to cost you--one snowman."

    This really gave me the creeps. My grandfather witnessed a similar event in New England, in the early 1920s. Bipedal footprints in the snow, going on for miles on end. Local Native Americans said they recognized this as the visitation of a Wendigo. There was more to it, but that's all my grandfather was willing to say about the event. Whatever else he knew he took to his grave.

    • @Luminousreign
      @Luminousreign 3 года назад +20

      Yeah there is a specific reason not to talk about those specific things if you believe in them. Essentially names are important and just talking about them in general causes you to attract them. If you ever need to get out of a speeding ticket on native land, is always worth a shot to claim something chased you. By the time you even start generically describing it, Cop is liable to shove a hand in your face and tell you to shut up before quickly hopping back in his own car and also speeding away. It is super taboo and taken pretty seriously in some indigenous cultures. It is actually kind of funny because given modern conveniences they arent super threatening, they are like 0 for a million against cars for instance, but they are known for being horrifying so the like slim chance they are real makes people go why bother and follow the traditions.

    The Loosemore girls woke up that morning to find that a snowman had indeed been constructed in the front yard, but their delight would soon turn to terror. Not only was the snowman crudely made, as if constructed with a lack of care uncharacteristic of their diligent father, but the footprints surrounding it were the wrong size and did not resemble those left by the sturdy winter boots of the constable, which did indeed lead away from the house without coming near the snowman.
    The girls deduced that their father must have neglected to keep his promise, perhaps in a rush to begin his shift due to some unforeseen circumstance. Seeing no other explanation, the horrified sisters concluded that the pitiful snowman must have been created by none other than Lucifer himself!

    I've found something similar: One winter day I was at my mother's and I was doing something in the garden and while looking over the stone wall I saw foot prints in the snow on the farm field. That was strange and I'm curious so I decided to investigate, so I walked around to the field and found a trail of hoof prints. I was puzzled by why someone wouldv'e ridden there, expecially in the night or early morning. I followed the hoof prints along my mother's property and strangely it looked as if the creature that had made them was walking on two legs. The "horse" did not walk over things though, it had walked around the stone wall and when reaching the neighbours fence had been stopped, at the fence it had done a sharp u turn, which was too small a turn for something four-legged to make. I have a lot of experience with horses, so I know what prints they usually leave. I guess the most plausible explanation is still a horse, but it's super strange that the tracks appeared to have been made by something on two legs.

      Same here. This story was always one of the scariest to read during my childhood. But the older I get, the more I believe it was just a profound hoax. It wouldn't be hard to apply horseshoes to the bottom of your boots and just walk through the snow, jump over walls and land on the other side. And i feel like a lot of the reports were probably embellished a bit as mass hysteria began to arise.
      Now the similar story of the "Devil's footprints," that happened in Quebec Canada, would've been a bit harder to pull off as the hoofprints were found "seared," into the pavement. Not sure how someone would pull that off unless they worked for the road company or something.

    Snow had fallen in the night
    Leaving a blanket pristine, and angel white

    Something strange and alien had walked right through the town
    And everyone’s door had been visited once.
    It even walked up a wall.
    100 miles, 100 miles

      I actually think the Jersey Devil might be a bird of prey or raptor, like an eagle. Apparently there are colonies of bald eagles living in the Pine Barrens according to Audubon so if we were to look at the number of eagles living in the Pine Barrens recorded by year and compare it to the number of sightings of the Jersey Devil we could find a connection. Of course this is just a theory but to me it makes more sense than the sandhill crane theory.

It was later proved that this was a prank perpetrated by two siblings, who had used their father's rhino-foot waste basket to create the prints - it was quite common in "olden days" to make waste baskets and ash trays out of animal feet, like rhinos and elephants.
    Still, it makes a good story.

    I remember this ,I read it in a book called mysteries of England or something like that from a little local library in my village on the Norfolk coast, it was a brilliant book,it also told the sightings of spring heeled Jack in the victorian London about a strange man like creature that could jump on roof tops and just disappear.

    I first heard of this story from Blurry Photos and learned more details via NightTerrors. I have wondered if the footprints were those of a goat that somehow managed to get up the roof. One theorist has speculated they were made by a kangaroo as apparently a local noble, a baronet I believe, kept one as a pet and they believed it escaped. To me the footprints are more goat like.

    • @mirandagoldstine8548
      @mirandagoldstine8548 3 года назад

      @@conveyor2 Maybe. Sadly the fact we don’t have any daguerreotypes (early photos) of the tracks makes it hard to confirm if they were made by a goat. Back then photography was still quite young and I don’t think there were any professional photographers living in the area the footprints were spotted. Had they occurred at a later period, say the late 19th century, we might have had a higher chance of any surviving photos with the decreasing cost of cameras.

    • @mirandagoldstine8548
      @mirandagoldstine8548 3 года назад +2

      Yep. I think the balloon is the most likely answer, depending on exactly how strong those winter winds were that night. I wonder if there are any meteorological records from that period of time that have survived. If we had access to those records and calculated how much the shackles weighed plus how securely fastened the balloon was to the area we could, within a good percentage, confirm if this theory is indeed the correct theory or at the very least plausible.

    • @friendcomputer2293
      @friendcomputer2293 3 года назад +9

      Only issue I see with the balloon theory is the way the tracks in the snow were laid out in regular intervals instead of being continuous trails one would expect a balloon to leave behind if it was dragging things., and how the tracks allegedly circled around some houses as if something were looking in windows. I will admit that without more evidence than claims and sketches, the tracks could've been less regular. People seeing strange marks in the snow could easily decide on a fantastic origin.
