    I read one of the comments and they said they like the simplicity of the content….I would have to agree… not so much simple…but direct to the point , we can feel your sincerity, and compassion, Your not trying to sell me a generator, trailer, or posting constant links. Also the length of the videos are great. Sometimes if I see a video is 50 minutes,I’m not going to click on it. Great job Buzz.

    Agree on fishing as a hobby. I got back into fishing more seriously after I retired. Catching fish is great but being out in nature is the real joy. As for retirement, it took me six months to adjust to not going to work each day.

    A fun hobby for me is gardening but not going bonkers with it. Growing tomatoes with flavor is my specialty. I get compliments from people because they comment on the flavor. I don’t bring this subject up with people to skew their opinions. It’s what I hear back from people. Sharing what grow with people is a blessing for me.

      I agree. I have 45 plants under the grow light in the basement right now. I plant a mix of red, orange tomatoes along with cherry tomatoes. We share with the neighbors. This will be my first year that I get to tend the garden every day weather permitting. I can't wait! Buzz

    Volkswagens are my passion. I also have an old 1956 cadillac to work on. I am renovating a 2 bedroom row house I bought like 9 years ago. Feels so good to be closing in on completing that. It's taken ALOT of TIME, way more than I ever imagined. When you work, have a family, you just shut down or shut off so many things. BUT, you need a purpose when you retire. If you boss at 80 retired, he would drop in a week since work gives him purpose. I want to travel and get a RV also. Lots to do in the little time remaining. Lake Erie is about 90 min from me.

    I retired at your age myself. I’ve always had hobbies, and I wonder now, how I ever worked full time. Well, I did only 9 years of full time work at my last job. Most of my younger life, I worked a job that allowed me flexible hours. I enjoyed bike racing and mountain bike racing. Traveling in my early fifties. Now that I’m retired from from age 64, now I’m 68. I still cycle for my health, have two great dogs, older Husky and a younger Husky/Shepard mix (4yrs old). Work on my old 100 year old house, and my other hobby is trading stocks. I also gamble at a casino every so often. Some times I wonder how I have time for everything. Oh, I love technology and computers, so life is never boring. I also like to make and edit videos using my old family 8mm movies and photographs. It’s a long process. Anyway, keeping busy, keeps my brain working, and exercising also helps there too. Oh, I almost forget. I work on vintage cars also. That I’ve done since I was 16 years. It’s funny, allot of my friends were so depressed after retiring. I never had the time to feel that way I guess. When I retired (laid off). I walk out of the building with my box of personal belongings, with a big grin on my face. 😊

    Gosh, I used to love metal detecting when I was in my teens and 20s. Had an older Whites detector. Back then I lived in an old area of Columbus Ohio. Used to find lots of coins, skeleton keys etc. I've spent most of my life out west though and I got out of the hobby because of a lack of areas to search. Now that I'm retired that would be such a fun hobby! Not a lot of old areas to search though around Las Vegas!

    We actually went out to dinner, and then hit the casino for a couple of hours. That place was packed, so we left early minus 60-70 bucks. I'm one of those guys that don't have a hobby ... yet. No offense, but I think that fishing pole fits you more than that violin. It's been years since I've fished, but I could probably drown a worm or two. I'd have to go with someone who could tell me what I caught. Now that metal detector. That looks like something I'd like to try out. Good idea, thanks. Sorry again for the loss of your FIL. I'm 67, retired 22 years ago. I seem to have endless hobbies...or obsessions. I have Asperger's so intense "hobbies" is common. I've been having a ball. There are many hobbies I don't do just because I don't have time. I went thru the fishing hobby and it was fun. Hunting too. Even a ran a trapline for awhile. I was a software engineer in my career and writing code, creates app was a lot of fun. I continue writing code for years when I retired. Water gardens/fish pond was a very intense hobby. I'm kind of odd I built another fish pond, liner, all the plumbing, rock work, landscaping, ready for water and ... I was done with that hobby. The "pond" has been sitting empty for 8 years...hahaha. That's how it is. Super interested but at some point it's like I've learned enough. Then I'm on to the next thing.
    I'm getting ready to move to SE Asia and wonder what my hobbies will be there.
    I think some people find everything interesting and some people find almost nothing interesting. I don't think it can be forced.

    I am looking thru your older vids, so I may add my comments on a few. Before you retire and are still on full incomes it is best to try to buy things you know you will want to do. Things like non-consumables. Like your fishing gear and metal detector, woodworking, electronics (cheap arduinos),3d printing. There is a difference between what did you retire from vs what are you retiring too.

    If you ask me , Wintertime is the worst time to be retired - too cold outside to do many of my hobbies. The month of January is the most depressed month for everyone , all ages. The only thing I had to look forward to is taking a trip to Detroit in Jan and attending the Detroit Auto Show , lol. and I lived near the East Coast.. so it was a nice weekend trip .. now they don't have it in Jan anymore and much smaller etc. If I'm not sick I guess I will be hitting the gym everyday in Jan when I retire.

    Hi Buzz, newbie to your channel and really enjoying your content and your down to earth vibe. It's great to hear from a "normal" person who is getting by, so far, on SS alone. You had mentioned in a previous vid that your were going with a medical plan through ACA until you reach 65. Question, does ACA count income from 401k etc in assessing whether you're within the guidelines for "free" coverage? My biggest concern about retiring early (without Medicare) is the cost of private insurance, which i guess, is why some people wait until 65. What a racket the government has going on! Lol!

    • @tjtexas5130
      @tjtexas5130 10 месяцев назад +2

      Withdrawals from a 401K do count as income for Obama Care / ACA. Our second year of retirement (we retired mid-year) we withdrew $ from one of our IRAs to ensure we met the minimum income requirement to qualify for subsidies. (We were blessed to have enough in our bank account to live on until we started hubby’s social security at 65.) Just be aware if you withdraw $10,000 or greater there may be some hoops to jump through at the bank (I think federal reporting requirements for deposits $10K or greater).

    • @BuzzRetirementGarage

    I'm 65 and plan, Lord willing, to fully retire in 8 years. Sue is going to retire in 2 years. We have the money to retire now but we want to do some travel and complete a few home improvements and build as big of a nest egg as possible. That's why we work now, to build up our nest egg, no other reason. Our home is paid for (since 2017) we have no debt at all and have one years expenses in a HYSA savings account, presently adding to a sinking fund to buy a new car cash for Sue when she retires. I have some friends that tell me life is too short you never know when your time is up, enjoy it now, but for me it's not dying young and leaving money on the table rather it's living old and not having the money to even own a table. We are quite frugal and are what some might call extreme budgeters and super-savers, putting north of 50% of our net income into retirement and savings. When you are used to putting $4500/month or more into savings it is hard to imagine living on SS alone even as a individual that like us lives on less than $3K/month. But I get it and the "why" some do that.

      Thank you for your comment. I see it both ways. There is no right answer and even the decision you're making now could change next week. I'll give you a true, sad, example. Two weeks ago, while seeing my father In law for the last time, (we saw him every Sunday and the next Saturday he passed at 96 years old) my sister in laws boyfriend said he was peeing blood. He's in his early 60's and doctor said he had advanced bladder cancer. For me, 10 years ago, I had lymphoma and had chemo and radiation treatments. You just never know. Do what works for you but you can't put a dollar figure on TIME. Have a great 2024! Enjoy your upcoming travels. What kind of vehicle does your wife want? Bob

      @@BuzzRetirementGarage Sorry to hear about your FIL. I think Sue is going to get a Mazda CX-5. Probably a 2 or 3 year old model. Her present car, which we both use to commute to work together (95 miles/day) is a 2012 Ford Escape. Probably the first week of February it will turn 200K miles. Not much to look at but we hope it lasts until she retires then last for more as I will continue to drive it until it refuses to go another inch. We have a Toyota Tacoma which I don't want to kill commuting. I really want that to be the last truck I ever buy. For hobbies I have a 16' boat not too crazy but do some bass fishing with it. I have a few banjos one is a Deering Basic the other is a Recording King. I ride bicycles on the road usually about 150/miles week. I'm always reading a book on personal finances or investing, obviously work full time and I'm a volly firefighter at 65 proud to say I still do interior fire suppression in full bunkers and on air. In the past I did a lot of competitive handgun shooting have backed off on that a little but intend to get back to it. Some of my friends my age are deep in debt (I mean really deep) giving little thought to financing their retirement. I on the other hand probably worry too much about financing ours but both Sue and I grew up in families that struggled, and we don't want to go that route. Take care Bob...Tom
