Let me tell you, I work on container ships and the standard of food varies enormously depending on the galley staff you have onboard. If you are lucky and you get a chef who loves to cook and prepare delicious meals for the crew then that is a bonus. Unfortunately, my last ship I had an absolutely terrible chef who did not care one bit what he served to us and most of the time we just went hungry as the food was so poor. For example he once served fried chicken and we thought mmm delicious, then when we bite into it the chicken is completely raw! The chef makes all the difference to the atmosphere and work environment onboard. So don't expect awesome food on every ship!!

+Carl Monk oh that's good to know man! I had no idea. I just remember speaking to the representatives from the companies and they had mentioned that the cargo lines that take passengers always have adequate to above standard food. But thanks for the heads up!

@ TheTravellingClatt Thanks for the insights and the videos
@CarlMOnk Your description of the food reminds me when I was in the Navy.. That food was horrible too.
That's too bad your ship's crew had to endure this and shame on the captian for not getting on the chef about stepping up their game. Thank for your insights here too .. I Hope your ship gets a better chef that cares ! Can't mess with a mans food

Totally agree with Carl too. As someone who has worked on-board container ships I have had some of the best food I have had and some of the worst. It all depends on the Cook.

Unless you're doing it for the adventure, $1700 for a one way across the Atlantic is about twice the ticket of a.flight.

At least. With Norwegian airlines you can get one way for as little as 200 $. But then again, it is two completely different ways of traveling. Sometimes the journey it self is the goal.

It was very easy in the 90s. I travelled extensively in the 90s by container ship...
But then again I was friends with several merchant navy captains and the regs were much lower.

  • @cameraman655

Did a container ship run between Sydney and LA with stops in NZ, New Caledonia, Samoa (both Samoas), Hawaii and finally LA, now bear in mind this was 1988 (I was a spry 21 year old). Definitely not for those who are partiers and get bored easily, nor for the queasy (STRONGLY suggest getting your sea legs before setting off). Prices quoted are strictly for 3 squares and a bed, they do not include air fare back home, spending while ashore (and the time ashore can be very brief), insurance, Visa costs (which can be very price, especially nowadays). As mentioned, depending upon the cook, the tucker can be first rate or rubbish you would not feed your dog, both experiences with cargo ship food were fairly good from my experience. Most of those that travel those way tend to be pensioners (retirees for you Yanks), few youthful travelers, save for the occasional backpacker, in most cases, you might be the only passenger aboard. If you have a flexible schedule, few responsibilities ashore (family, job, bills) and a sense of adventure and can entertain yourself, definitely worth it. This video has re-piqued my interest in this form of travel, might just have to look into it again..

You should awesome story also dude. From Sydney to La that sounds amazing!

    • @cameraman655
      @cameraman655 7 лет назад +8

Yes, it was. I have some notes that I took whilst on that voyage, 29 years ago, however most are at my parent's home in Perth, I have to see if I can dig them up when I visit next month, as I have forgotten a lot of the details (like the name of the shipping company, though it was German (West German back then) company, perhaps Hapag Lloyd. Other advice, when ashore DO NOT venture too far from the Port city, as most of these ships are pressured to "get in and get out" as quickly as possible and many leave ahead of scheduled and if you "miss the boat", you have to catch it at it's next Port Of Call. Back in the 80s, these container companies began using a "RO-RO' operation (Roll On and Roll Off) on a more frequent basis, minimizing the time in port
Traveling companions, make bloody sure you get along, especially those whom you might be romantically involved. A month long voyage or longer with few activities will put that relationship to the test, at the risk of sounding sexist, most females get bored very easily. While all of my voyages (both of em), I traveled solo, many whom I met have passed on that advice.
I'll see if I can find those notes and pass on any useful advice.

I have read the book " Running Away to Sea" by George Featherling, 3X !. Interesting story about around the world on a tramp freighter. A long time ago when I was in College, my prof used to tell story about his yearly cruise on a tramp freighter in the western Pacific. So, I am all primed to go. Before the internet I used to get copies of Freighter Travel published by a travel agency in Pasadena. Oh, I miss those copies.

  • @MCP53

I've travelled on many cruise ships, but usually on the budget deck with no portholes and minimum space. However, on a family trip from Sweden to the UK, my wife was delayed by travel document problems. Me and the kids went ahead in our tiny cabin in the bowels of the cruise ship, with little spare time to enjoy the entertainments on offer. My wife followed a day or two later on a DFDS freighter, great big cabin all to herself, windows and all, and lots of friendly advice from the crew. To be honest, if you don't want a booze cruise, but just want to travel, why pay the extra?

As a second mate in the merchant navy I can tell you that the food can be hit and miss, all depends on the chief cook and also depends on nationalities, its truly a worldwide profession, so don't go on board expecting what you're use to at home. Also every cargo ship (As long as they have the spare space on board) can take up to 12 passengers at a time, any more then they would be classed as a passenger ship and have to deal with all the extra safety regulations that come with that. And honestly you get use to it, being at sea months at a time, all depends on the trade and how much you get into port, even then most ships are in and out, time is money as they say.

This was once the most popular way to cross the ocean. It wasn't until a little more than a century ago that ships became specialized passenger and specialized cargo ships and today passenger ships are almost all nothing but joy ride ships and not for actual transportation. But cargo ships still offer paid passenger service and have for the last century and a half. There are people who still travel this way all around the world.

I did this and went from New York to Southampton U.K...The trip was fun but I took 2 Stratocasters for the gigs I was going to be playing and the humidity almost completely ruined them!! I expected some humidity issues but not as bad as it was. The 1st time I travelled by Cargo Ship I took my 63 Tele and I had absolutely zero issues. Nothing was different the 2nd trip...Same month with same weather..Oh well.It all worked out ok AND iys awesome to be out there with just your girl in the middle of the Atlantic is really special. laying there on the deck, eatching the pitch black sky with giant bright stars along with thousands of shooting stars and the Northern Lights is simply jaw dropping. It feels so nice to connect with someone you love when you feel so infinitesimal yet so connected.

In Colorado I also own a Vintage/Exotic Auto Dealership with a Certified Repair Center and in San Francisco I have a Vintage guitar& Amplifier store which I specialize in PRE CBS Strats and Telecasters for the most part without spending HOURS telling about it.Im 42 so im not the usually RUclips guy. If you stay intouch, ill give you my YT info..I have a bit over 1 million subs. I have a 2015 RADICAL RXC Twin Turbo 500R which is much more performance oriented than the 500. Anyway..The last thing I want to do is sound like a DOUCHE BAG!! Last thing I would EVER want.Just wanted to give u a lil info about our businesses and what my YT pages will be about. I have 2 pages, one is about our vehicles as well as testing them and the other is about my guitar collection, session work and live shows..The guitar part is VERY IN DEPTH about Strats and Teles..I have 3 books about just Stratocasters and 2 about Broadcasters,NoCasters,Esquires"both single&double single coils and of course Teles starting with my personal 51. All guitars used are mine or rather my pops. He bought tgem ALL either new in the late 50s or used from C&S Music or pawn shops..That goes with the Strats as well. if you are into Fender then let me lnow. The cars will come as well. ALL OF THE CARS WE PURCHASE OR HAVE IN OUR VIDEOS ARE TRUE MANUALS!! I OWN 2 86 Lamborghini QV 500 Countachs which are both U.K. cars I bought from my uncle They are veryvrare not only because only 104 U.K. cars were shipped in 86 but they are Down draft webers instead of the Bosch injection that KILLED OVER 50HP. us the colours arent common.A metallic French Racing blue and Sky Blue Single stage...Single stage itself wasnt a common practice for the company at all but mine is 100% real! If you are ever interested in some cool rare vehicles..message this name..This name is only used for viewing videos..Haveca great day.Im about to board my plane to LA to pick up a 1993 5 SPEED MANUAL W140 AMG 500SEC 2 Door coupe..There werent many 500 SC Coupes and ZERO were manuals in the states BUT as far as S class Coupes.......500s are very very rare in mint condition!!! plus the majority were 600s..Obviously the V12 which for some reason Merc used A fckn BIODEGRADABLE WIRING HARNES!!!Needles to say, there are some CHOICE V12 140s out there..i gotta go man..I hope u inquire but if you do,please dont share the info..If peps REALLY want the info, they will look or ASK ME...People assume,I wouldnt I wouldn't give any info!...Thanks again..Take care !! done this a few times in Alaska seas on Russian , Korean and other trampers and container ships as a US longshoreman in the early 00s . We watched a russian version of LOTRs saga where the whole soundtracks was classic rock like Led-Zep and Pink Floyd ! We fished off the side and caught skatefish and huge halibut . of course we didn't have to pay tho , but we didnt get paid until moving cargo . No more Russian ships here now unfortunately . the Korean and Burmese trampers had no sit down toilet but a squat hole . that may take getting used to most . the food is totally authentic of the place(s) the crew is from .

This kept popping up in my recommended so i bit ;) What is the draw to this versus taking one of those re-positioning cruise ships that have a similar cost and has more entertainment options/food choices, possible internet if needed? Is it the lack of distraction, to really concentrate on stuff, like a forced de-tox from the hustle and bustle of life? Great info on here, what a crazy thing I've never even heard of.

Great clear video, great energy but you didn't mention the cost of the food, just that you had to pay & it was good. Did you stop in ports, how many? For how long? Did you have showers in your cabin or communal? Did you socialise with any crew? What about alcohol on board? Any restrictions for anything? It looks like flying is cheaper & faster.

It honestly isn't that hard to get into the Merchant Navy. If any teens are reading this and wondering what to do with their lives, LOOK AT THE MERCHANT NAVY (Particularly becoming an officer of the watch)! Pays good, you get accommodation paid for you for half the year+, you get to travel around the world, it isn't super stressful and you can stay in the industry until retirement. Don't want to leave your family for long periods? Try to work for a ferry company instead. Dont want to settle down? Try to get on a cargo ship.

I've never taken a cruise but I'm considering this. I've done a good bit of train travel (a bedroom is a must) and always enjoyed the pace. I live in Charleston, SC, US. Cruise ships call here often. Being stuck on a ship with hundreds of middle aged, mostly overweight white people doesn't excite me.

I do wonder why cargo ships even bother with passengers. It would seem the profit margin would be so insignificantly small compared to the cargo hauling profits, that it's not worth the hassle.

During this pandemic, I need to travel to Canada and have to get to an island close to me whos borders are open. On a cargo ship, it might be a 16 hour journey I think ill be so seasick that I wont need to bring anything to do as I will probably be pewking my guts out the whole time until i get into port of my destination. First I have to see if I can find a vessel to take me.

I'm not sure that there would be an economic advantage to traveling this way. For example, It might take ten days for a cargo ship to go from New York to Dublin and another ten days to return. That would cost roughly $3000 for the round trip assuming one could find such a route available and I could not and that is based on a per night pricing. Aer Lingus offers NY to Dublin business class luxury flights for $2000 round trip. Coach class is far cheaper than that. While I think this could be an interesting experience under the right circumstances, I don't see it being a viable way of travel due to the high expense. Even if a room is shared by two people, it still costs more than flying coach class and takes far too long. Most people travel either on business or as a tourist. Business travel would preclude this sort of transportation and most people only get a limited amount of vacation time, typically two weeks at the high end of the scale The web sites I checked out show travel times ranging from 10 to 35 days each way. In other words, the shortest travel time would far exceed the longest vacation most people would get.

Hello, I'm from Serbia and I'd like to have a trip from Europe to Latin America.
The thing is I'm afraid to travel by plane and my question is if I could have a trip by Ship.
