Thank you!! This validates how I teach my clients when working an in-home private lesson. Unstructured walk = equipment before training. Structured walk/ training session = long line + designated training collar. I like to say “It’s not about a destination. It’s about consistency, position and focus” I also like to be goal oriented. Can you maintain position and a loose leash to your neighbors mailbox, to the light post, to the stop sign. Most people are motivated by measured success!
Totally agree with all this. Having the “work” and “leisure” mode makes it easier to be completely consistent. It’s the most successful method I’ve found for my own dogs and for clients. If it starts raining, or you realise you should have been home 5 minutes ago, or you need your dog to pull you up a hill because you’ve put on a few lockdown pounds - onto leisure mode 😁
😊great video. QUESTION. Why not do bitework on a harness and have a easier time loose leash walking and communication with the dog through the dogs neck via any collar? What is it about collar bite work that is so superior? Seems everyone sport and work do protection work with a collar.
I tell this to every client! 'you may want to go for 2 miles- you may be able to do that, but it's going to be in-front of your house in short sessions, so if your dog goes downhill, goes over threshold, etc, you are right there'
It's a long time since you posted this, but I just found it. Question, have you ever come across a dog that HAD to walk quite fast. My 10 mth GSD became VERY distressed on a really slow walk with my son [he was showing me where a park was], insisted on taking his 2 yr old daughter walking with us. On the way back she "lost her gait and became very distressed. Immediately improved when I left him and continued at normal pace. Next day the vet said it was because she wasn't yet mature skeletally to endure the strain of the short stride. OK, so, now she's 2, but the other day, doing loose leash walk down a 1/4 straight road a herd of sheep came onto the road in front of us [happens all the time]. These are the sheep from hell, decided to walk REALLY slowly, not grazing on the verge, all going the same way, looking behind, slowing even more. LOL. My dog again appeared to get distressed. Anyway. when doing loose leash walking, I now slow down, she can't take it and begins to forge, which she never does at normal pace, I have to correct every few paces. I would rather just put it down to a "quirk" than make an issue.
Thanks this is super helpful

Been sharing this gold nugget concept with some new clients this week bro. Takes the pressure off them too in the early stages!

Awesome!
This makes incredible sense 🤯
A good point, very well made 👍🏻
Dude I love the way you explain things.
Thanks dude! That’s a nice way of saying I can talk underwater with a mouth full of marbles!

It’s not always practical or possible to use a harness unfortunately. Also there’s a few things that can only be taught with a collar

Exactly!!
Thank you
My pleasure.
Very good one.
Very good info i used harness for pulling till my dog got bigger🤣🤣
Exactly why my puppy is wearing a harness and a collar! Collar is for communication, but most of the time he's just hanging with me on a harness.

I’m show this video to my dachshund.
Let me know what he says!
@@PatStuart he said that is a smart dog. He walked pretty good today when I was in no rush to walk around the block.
😂
If the dog is highly leash reactive should you do leisure walks at all?
I think depends on the likelihood of you encountering the triggers. At that point you probably have more important things to worry about.
Or don't have a time limit lol
Exactly!
