Great video! I love watching regular owners learn even more than watching a professional showing perfect performance. Makes me think I can do it too!
Walk walk! We are getting a puppy in a month. Your videos have taught us so much. Can’t wait to put our new found knowledge into practice.
I have been watching this video on repeat. There are so many subtlies in dog training which i love.. Working on this and maybe, just maybe, Ned and I will get past level 3 withiout him being a zamboni cleaning up the floor.
Every time I watch one of your videos I come away with useful little tidbits. Thank you so much, keep up the good work….
Love those edits - air treat, I can't find my cheese 😆 Really informative, thank you!
Love all of your videos! So helpful! You are a great trainer!
Great video! Good advice delivered in a clear concise way.
I love these videos, they are so useful especially for new dog owners. 😊
Walk walk! Loved this video!!!
I think y'all are the best dog trainers on the internet. I would love it if you would do a video about leash management and getting a dog to stay at your side for someone who uses a wheelchair or power scooter.
Walk walk, this is great info.
Must be nice to have a dog that is food/treat motivated!
oh absolutely but you can also train them to value something more than they do! i trained mine to be food motivated because training with toys was a bit too hard for me.
@@HazeyEy3s Can u help me? My dog acts aggressive towards people when it seems inappropriate. Like in the house, between family members. He mostly seems to protect me, so whenever anyone in the family is talking to me? He stands between us and barks loudly. But he also protects my teen daughter. If I'm standing near her or talking to her, he takes the protective stance in front of her (and interrupts with intermittent loud barks) So here's my question, is there something safe and natural that I can give my dog to make him more calm? Alleviate anxiety and make him more relaxed? He is extremely large and tall (120 lbs) German Shepard/Mastiff. I'm a very small female only 125 lbs. I cant control him at all on a leash. Even when a man is walking him? its an intense struggle to keep him from pursuing other dogs and people that he sees. Its seems like he just wants to play with other dogs (but im not 100% sure he won't fight if provoked) and he shows real growling and aggression towards people. I had to heavily sedate and muzzle him just to get him to walk into the vets office for his neutering at 18 months old. Then, they had to knock him cold to take him away for surgery bc he is so terrifying and strong. He is really a good dog in the sense that he is compliant to commands in a calm setting. He will go into his kennel on command. He respects small gates/boundaries that are set up in the house (even though he can easily scale them). He co-exists with small dogs and cats. But he is over protective to a fault, becomes wildly protective and out of control. I want to be able to take my large dog for walks and the parks and places I go, but I can't control him. I want my family to feel comfortable around him and be able to have guests in my house without worrying he will bite them. I wont get rid of this dog. I love him so much. He's 3 yrs old. Unless he bites someone in my family? I can't see myself getting rid of him. But I would love to give him a better quality of life by taking him out for adventures and socialization without worry that he will bite someone. ALSO, sidenote: I've never ever felt safer in my own home before. Nobody lingers near my yard or my door. Nobody is going to enter my yard or my house. He is very smart and dedicated in his duty to protect. He never barks excessively. If he's barking? Its bc someone or something is near our property. He assesses threat level and alerts with a certain bark, I call it his "serious bark" when there is actually a person near the house or the yard.
@@HazeyEy3s any advice would be appreciated. His name is Bear. He's beautiful, red brindle. Looks like an extra extra large red brindle German Sheppard with short hair. People tell me he is both beautiful and terrifying. To me, he looks like Scooby doo.
You could do it when they are hungry. I started mine before breakfast when I knew they would pay attention.
@@winterblossom4446 I would get a trainer in.
Walk walk. I love your videos!
Awesome!!
Walk walk!!! 😍
-My son is ALL about the “walk-walk” while I am always tired & slow, so I encourage “sniff-ari walks” 😂
I'll try it
This real-life episode really resonated with me-THANK YOU! I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!!
Thank you, my husky doesn't care about learning anything. I will do this
Laurie, huskys don't care about what we want in general lol. Hang in there! The only thing that worked for me and my husky is getting rid of his bowl. I'd feed him his meal by hand while training. Good luck!
Walk walk 😊
We call them Sniffing Walks and Working Walks. They learn the difference.
I'm 63 yo, my dog is a mini dachshund (4 inches high), there is no way I can hold a treat in front of him while walking!!!! Got any solution for a mini wiener ?
I use a long handled plastic spoon with treat paste on to reward. Can be fiddly but saves me (and my back😅) bending down to my little doggie.
You can get a large syringe and put some peanut butter or other treat paste
@lizrock1442 I was just gona say the same thing as I've a cocker spaniel puppy.
You can guy long BBQ tongs at a discount store - hold treat in tongs. Hope that helps?
I recommend a long teasing stick toy.
I'm still with you
I loved: in beginning, dog 10-human 3, for their responses 😂
I walk two labs, they are awesome as long as I have treats in my hand, the moment I don’t, they pull. I’m guessing I need to work them both separately for this exercise. We go on “sniffy” walks and “walk walks”.
Walk walk! Squirrel! 😊
Walk walk. Same issue with my two year old lab. He's with me, but he just likes to be in front. When I stop 9 out od 10 times he stops and hustles back to my side. I usually change direction when he pulls. The pulling is getting old though.
i have a one year old cocker spaniel that likes to try and great very human being on a walk. i don't know if this walk walk training would help
Is it safe to do leash pops using the gentle leader?
O this is great! It's the walk walk that we have trouble with. She can heal but pulls when released so no in-between.(Walk walk to me is Jack Russell mix 20 min before and after work to walk to burn energy and guarantee a poop, enjoy sniffing and checking holes)
Is this a basic leash/collar or any specific type?
I think Kayl's high pitch is the biggest distraction for the dog, more than the toys and the food bowl 😂
Prong collar?
Our Grand puppy is a Pit bull Dalmatian Cross. She will be a year old in July.
She is a beautiful, smart dog.
But I’m so glad that this video came across my feed!!! It has affirmed some things I’m doing right and pointing out what I’m doing wrong.
Thank you for the information. I’ll be putting it to good use!!!!
Walk walk!
So used to walking my dogs on the right because a few of mine have been therapy dogs so we walk them on our right because walls and sidewalks are ….hard to explain but it keeps them from ppl when we need them to be. So will try these steps with some tweaking.
I would prefer them on the right too. It keeps them out of the way of other people walking the opposite directions
I have a small dog, Pomsky, and am using a halter rather than a collar. Are there any adjustments to these lessons that I need to make?
A halter like a harness? Ones that go around their body encourage pulling. They were originally made for sled dogs to pull the sleds comfortably. Need to use a flat collar. Dogs will keep pulling on harnesses. No dog trainer worth their salt recommends harnesses or halters. If you mean a halti, still not a great choice in my opinion. The pops could hurt the dogs neck from twisting.
I have a toy poodle, 8 inch’s tall. I can’t get down to her for a treat and walk. I’m also almost 67.
My puppy has been doing great with the beginning of our walks. But as soon as we head home, she begins pulling. Even at the park, she is so smart - she pulls when we near the car. 😅 and when cars pass she will sit and wait, which seems better than lounging at the car but makes the walk experience a struggle.
WALK WALK 😁
What I’ve been struggling with is carrying this over to more distance, and also dogs as distractions. He loves dogs way too much, so that level of distraction is still way too hard.
Wok wok!
Walk walk :D
Walk walk. Any recommendations for a dog who is completely unmotivated by food?
They have a video where a lady is using toys as a motivation.
Walk the dog when they’re hungry. Make the first meal of the day a walk to earn their breakfast. Put their kibble in a treat pouch instead of treats. If they’re hungry they’ll be motivated.
My problem is my dog is a ball obsessed Border collie crossbreed who isn't pulling because he is distracted by something in sight but by any place anywhere where we ever played with the ball. He knows each place within half an hour walk in whatever direction we walk. So, lets say I start walking North..he knows a place he played in the north and that is what he is pulling towards, even if it is say a 20 minutes walk away.I don't understand how to use a "leave it" on that?
If your dog is trying to go another direction, walk that way, make sure there is a little slack in it and right before leash extends bust a u turn and keep walking do not look back or let him pull, it teaches him/her to focus on you cause they see "hey this guy is going the other direction, I gotta pay attention to them." (If you are worried about hurting their neck, don't be, use common sense behind it) and if you use a harness even better cause no stressing about hurting puppys neck
@@UnknownPr0digydon’t use a harness. They’re designed to encourage pulling. They’re not for training.
Get a prong collar. They work great when used properly and it doesn’t hurt them. Sounds like he just pulls on walks in general. If you drove a half hour and hopped out of the car and randomly walked around I’d bet he’d still pull. And if he isn’t maybe it’s because he’s sniffing. Once the sniffs are old sniffs it’s not as exciting and they don’t stop as much or as slow.
Walk Walk
I have a dog that has high hunt instincts and squirrels are more interesting than food or pops. Any suggestions?
I've got a similar problem. I make my pup sit, look at me, and wait for a while until I'm ready to keep going (and usually whatever bird or squirrel is gone).
Whenever we go outside my 8 month male english setter old puppy seem to be interested in smells more than anything and loses interest in food. Any recommendations?
Maybe better food or a toy? A lot of time is about engagement. Setters are great dogs for sniffing games/training. If we are boring (according to the dog), they find interesting things somewhere else. Depending on what your ideal walk looks like, you need more/different communication with your dog. Trained dogs don’t have to focus on us all the time (because they’re still aware enough for when you can recall them) but at 8 months old, it’s still all about building a relationship, so that they basically need to "store" you as more important than anything else.
Don’t feed the dog before the walk. If they’re hungry then they’ll be motivated. Put their whole meal in a treat pouch.
Bentley’s “What gives?” face when he isn’t rewarded just for being cute 😂😂

What happens when your dog likes "the thing

I have a 6 month old golden retriever who about
Rips my Arm off she pulls so hard! but at the same time also refuses to walk anywhere but my street ! So she pulls
Like Crazy and she's scared of anywhere new(noises, cars etc) I don't even know where to start .
I'm in the same boat. Our dog is 2 and he still pulls so hard that we've stopped walking him. I have a bad shoulder and it's just become unbearably difficult to walk him.
Unfortunately, that is very difficult to manage with a very small dog...
Walk Walk I've struggled so much trying to train my deaf dog. Havent found any really helpful advice so far.
I've been told hand signals instead of verbal commands
You didn't really address the part about how to differentiate between different walks? For example, now you can sniff, to now we walk and you don't stop or sniff (as much)
I use a harness and long leash (20 or 50 ft depending on where we are) for a sniffy walk. I use a regular 6ft leash and a martingale collar for my working or structured walks. I'm hoping the different hardware clues my pup in, but it's hard to know for sure.
Walk walk.
Walk walk. Need more help with the pop and closeups of leash holding
Walk walk 😂
What if my dog isn't motivated by food? He doesn't ever want treats.
Walk walk still here...
We call the sniff walk a 'sniffari'.
I see a human that holds the leash so short and tight so the dog has no choice but to pull. Also, allowing the dog to go forward and following behind on a tight leash, teaching the dog that a tight leash is the desired thing.
Begin at the beginning, before attempting to walk anywhere. Teach the dog where you want him to be. Pay him well for being there. Show him how to get back to that spot.
I think people expect to be able to walk their dog all over, with distractions and triggers without working on foundations first. It is so important to teach what we want. You can’t correct if the dog doesn’t understand the behaviors we want.
Walk
Tall money 32
Jeez, that little lipstick! This is why I only have female dogs! ❤
Put simply the reason dogs pull is because you let them. No clarity for where the dog needs to be.
