  • Remembering Rushmore
In 2011, I hadn't been on a vacation in a very long time. Sharon told me I really needed to get away. I asked what vacation spot was her favorite, and she said without a pause, "Mount Rushmore." Okay, I didn't get it. A mountain in South Dakota? But, okay.
We packed out bags, got on a flight, rented a car, and drove to Mount Rushmore. There is a place on the drive where you round a corner, and there it is. We rounded that corner, and I could finally see Mount Rushmore. It took my breath away. It was so majestic. Patriotism flowed through my veins.
That moment changed my view about traveling. I've since been to Mount Rushmore twice, and each time I've been it has produced those same feelings -- awe, patriotism, gratitude. The Bible talks about memorial stones. Mount Rushmore is one of mine; it was a life changing trip.
A memorial stone that is more about the Christian life is my participation in Celebrate Recovery, (CR). Going, working the steps, continuing to work with a sponsor has led me into an adult Christianity. I was saved when I was eight. But my Christian growth had stayed at eight years old. The Holy Spirit has worked to give me a deeper meaning to the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for me.
My hope is that I continue life on the road to recovery, I will have more memorial stones. I pray you will look at your memorial stones to see how awe-inspiring your journey with Christ is.

Amen! As a public school teacher, I share with my classes that I am a Christian when I introduce myself. I don't say much to them after that, but I strive to be an example to them and a living testimony of my savior Jesus. Thank you for sharing!
