    The greatest Pretender is likely Kaleid Illya. She's such a good Pretender even she herself and even most of the fandom don't recognize Chloe as the original.

    An F grade is fine for what we got as a character honestly. Oberon is such a great character in spite of the changes.

    • @CrazyYurie
      @CrazyYurie  Год назад +81

      Indeed, but I also made that point to say that I personally adore the character in FGO despite him not being accurate to his past depictions. To be honest, I don't even care that he isn't accurate because he's such a great character as is. :D

      @CrazyYurie For sure! I think Vortigern being more independent design wise and marginally more tied to the history and myth around him, but Oberon Vortigern being so unique its worth it.

  • @ShadowAraun
    @ShadowAraun Год назад +120

    I think you hit the nail on the head, he is better at being Oberon than Vortigern. Something people tend to overlook when they call Vortigern his true form is how untrue that statement is, about as untrue as it was when he said it because nothing he says can ever be considered the truth. Vortigern, the destroyer of britain is his true NATURE sure, but it isn't even what he wants, and it most certainly isn't his true form anymore after being contaminated by the concept of Oberon and inheriting the skill A Midsummer Nights Dream which renders anything and everything he says and does as a fleeting midsummer nights dream, that is to say, false.
    another way to look at him is nearly everything he does and says is about as true as it is false, his lies are not something as simple as taking the opposite of what he says or means, he CAN AND DOES SPEAK THE TRUTH, the problem is whenever he does it becomes a lie in some way. He wanted to destroy proper human history and yet in his failure he was happy
    he liked faerie Britain yet for his desire to see a fictitious world usurp PHH he still destroyed it.
    so in the end, him being rather bad at representing Vortigern, who he was supposed to be, but better at representing Oberon, who he isn't supposed to be, is rather fitting.

    The thing about Nasu is that he loves Arthurian legend so much that he loves to make his own abridged version of it. Although, tbf, that's par for the course for Arthurian stories throughout the centuries. Would love to get an Oberon version that incorporates more of his powers beyond his sleeping powers

  • @GamerJosh2611
    @GamerJosh2611 8 месяцев назад +22

    Honestly, of course it's a low grade, it's kind of explained in-universe too. The aspects that Oberon embodies aren't that of the actual mythos involving him, but rather the Oberon from A Midsummer Night's Dream. You CAN see him taking from his mythological self in some regards, such as concerning his attack animations, but he's very explicitly stated to be more "Oberon from A Midsummer Night's Dream" than "Oberon from Mythology", which isn't new because it's already established that Servants, when summoned, tend to focus on a single aspect of themselves rather than the whole picture. Hence, his powers are focused more towards Dreams.

    I find it interesting the juxtaposition Project Moon has with Type Moon; as their version of Titania is an anomaly that exists to specifically try and find Oberon who is implied to not exist and so therefore workers have to pretend to be Oberon to satisfy her. Where as in Fate, Oberon only exists as a disguise for someone else and it's Titania who doesn't exist at all.
    With how Sinclair looks in his Fae Lantern Ego it definitely seems as though heavy inspiration bounces back and forth between the two

    So I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm genuinely curious if the reason they picked oberon and vortigern to pair together for the pretender has something to do with Vortigern and Rowena, the widely known forgery orginally claimed to have been a lost work of shakespeare. I haven't heard anyone comment of this, but it does connect vortigern to Shakespeare, and by extension oberon, by way of a forgery

    This was really interesting and I even heard a very useful piece of lore I didn't know about. However, when it comes to grading Vortigern I think that you just should not have. I don't think Lostbelt Vortigern was supposed to be THE Vortigern, it was a phenomenon original to the lostbelt that simply recycled the name so another element of Arthurian legend would be there. Of course Oberon was better at being "Shakespearan style Oberon" that's why he was a Pretender. He needed to pretend to be something else otherwise he'd just be a disembodied black hole/gnat fusion.

      Believe it or not? Not all of us are rabid ignorant isolationists with no knowledge of history. Though, in my case? I'm actually a dual citizen of the US and Canada, currently residing in Canada. Anyway, I'm guessing you stumbled onto this video without knowing the subject? These videos are connected to a mobile game called Fate/Grand Order, which is part of a wider franchise called the 'Fate Franchise'. The short version is that it focuses on battles between magic users who summon beings from the past called 'servants' to fight for them - with these servants being characters from history, literature, or mythology. The videos I make on this channel are basically about taking the version of these historical/literary/mythological figures found in-game or in the wider franchise, then comparing them to their real/literary/mythical counterparts and seeing how well they compare.
      It's not just European history though. Since this is a Japanese franchise, it should not come as a surprise that it's largest cast of characters come from Japan. You can find characters from all over the world, though admittedly some regions have gotten far less attention than they deserve - above all Africa. Still, I'm a history nerd who likes seeing how this franchise depicts these characters, and so I started making these videos. :D
