  • In this episode, we give you a brief insight into how we source our whisky casks and what it's like to work with The Whisky Baron as a cask client.
A big thanks as always to The Waverley Inn Weybridge for providing us with some great food and a fantastic team.

Very interesting video and I'm glad you managed to persuade the cask owner to bottle his cask. I'm sure you were even happier.
I find it amazing that the investor had no idea what he had bought. He'd never heard of Ben Nevis and didn't even know which type cask he had purchased. Would you say that he was very lucky not to have been scammed?
Is this normal or are most cask owners a bit more knowledgeable? It certainly makes me concerned about the possible ways someone who has no knowledge of the cask industry could get caught out.
Surely he must have received a document of cask description?
Ben Nevis is of course much more famous for its Sherry butts (rather than this Refill Ex-Bourbon hogshead), and its influence in the Japanese whisky industry. The distillery owner, the Japanese spirits company, Nikka, ships a lot of these sherry casks to Japan to marry with other whisky.
I have seen a few Ben Nevis Ex-Bourbon Refill barrels and hogshead bottlings by independent bottlers and actually bought a Signatory bottle from their "Unchillfiltered" series back in 2019. It was a real education tasting Ben Nevis matured in an Ex-Bourbon cask, rather than the usual flavour profile of Ex-Sherry. It's a shame that there are no official bottlings in Ex-Bourbon. It actually works very well.

we were absolutely delighted Reb; it ended up being the top rated whisky in Forbes' 'Top 10 Whiskies of 2022' and is still one of my favourite expressions that we've released under The Whisky Baron brand.
I'd say it's fairly common for private owners to not fully understand what they're holding. Granted a lot of people who own casks are enthusiasts so may know brands like Ben Nevis, but when it comes to cask types, values etc. I'd say this is fairly standard unfortunately.
you're absolutely right - a lot of liquid ends up in 'Japanese Whisky' expressions so being able to source a clean, refill bourbon expression was such a privilege for us. Thanks for watching and glad you're enjoying the content. Sláinte!

Fascinating to watch this knowing you finally bottled it along with the 2 others...as for the "Export label", really looking forward to hear to whom it might be distributed here in France to have a chance some day to try & buy your whiskies, as there are a lot of quality single malt drinkers & collectors out there...
