I stumbled upon this series today and watched all six. Great job. Your perseverance is amazing. I'm very proud of you. Tighten your cam chain asap tho! LOL
Watched all 6 videos this morning while searching for old memories. I had one of these 73' XL's in 1973 when I was 13 yrs old. So many great memories brought back watching your video series. This was my 3rd bike at that point but the first full sized and street legal one I had gotten. My father had licensed it so that I could ride the dirt roads without being hassled. Mine had over 12k miles when I finally retired it for a bigger bike around 1980. Wish now I'd never done that. I rode that bike into the ground and it just kept on going. One of the best all around small bikes I ever owned. Many thanks for posting the videos. Be proud of what you've accomplished. Looks like you've won your bet with Mom as well. Cheers from the Motor City.
Hey Josh. I laughed so hard I spat coffee all over my iPad with the “kick starting” sequence. Calvin once said,” Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. So very true. Damn good job.
I don't think that pregnancy is a strange comparison. You worked hard for a significant period of time and are now able to bear the results of your labor. I am meeting a guy soon to purchase his Honda XL 175. This series has been a significant inspiration. I appreciate your enthusiasm and your smile. No homo, you have a beautiful soul.
You're right, it's been a solid 9 months of nurturing this beautiful little baby until it popped out (of you?) AND everyone's well and healthy, what a magical love story!
sweet sound there matey thrilled for you im grinning as tho it were mine .well done for keeping at it .if you were to do another i saw that you struggled a biton the floor .make a motorcycle lift table ,i made mine for fifteen quid out of some scrap box its on my channel it made a world of difference to my back and knees as im 62 now a real pleasure to use wish id got one yeard ago i dident realise what i was missing out on .or jus pay 300 dollars but the latter idea is better as you made it your self .was great watching your journey look forward to seeing more bike projects dont give up ,Ant from wales . by the way yes a wierd analogy lol.
Glad you made it. Each I watched each part there a building concern that, after all that effort, you still didn't know if you would eventually get a usable bike at the end of it.
Enjoyed each and everyone of your video's, at 17 mine was a XL185s now at 56 I wish I still had it. But my 954 Blade will have to do ;) well done to you.
I have the same bike only paid $75 for it!!! Same problem with the kick start shaft is broken. Don't really want to get into the motor like that but as soon as the shop manual comes in, I'll give it a try. Great video!!!
This is awesome. You learned shitloads. This was my first bike arriving in Los Angeles from Montreal in 1984. Wished I’d had the loot for an XL350 but I didn’t I’d ride it on the freeway wide open @55mph and the cop cars would sit on my tail & blast ” we recommend you exist the freeway at the next exit”. I couldn’t afford a car until 3 years later. Never had Kickstarter shaft problems but Honda fasteners are shit. After all this you’re ready for a Yamaha XL or TT500. Allen screw fasteners all round. Yamaha XT500’s have upper Cyl lubrication issues, get the large volume rocker box lubrication aftermarket kit . I blew up three of them. Late for work, the last one cost me my job. Keep this up. YOU Are the fucking legend. People your age should get inspired Good for you for putting this together. My take home is... you can’t beat having a mentor...Count yourself lucky. You made some mistakes but look at all you didn’t make👍👍 commaful.com/play/fishmouth500/cafe-racer/
I had a 78 Xl 175 back in the 80s. It was a hand me down that had went through both my brothers. Some people hand down clothes, we did motorbikes and guns.
No better feeling than a bike finally starting after all that work, been in the same boat many times, that's tits. Love old bikes, rebuilt a 78 Suzuki gp100 myself and I know what it's like trying to deal with old shit
I found your series while attempting to figure out how to complete a restoration of my newly purchased 1973 honda xl175. I was hoping that you could send me a copy of the wiring diagram you spoke of and wanted the opportunity to ask questions from time to time?
Excellent bike restoration series of videos, dare I say, best I have seen anywhere. Great comentary, great videography, even the music bits were spot on. Congratulations on the whole effort, and the result. The XL175 is a sentimental fave of mine - my second bike, purchased new in '75 for $600. I still have the receipt. A joy to watch one being brought back to life. I am subscribed now. Many thanks. :o)
Great videos man. I enjoyed it. For once someone like me, who doesn't redo it to be a million dollar show bike, instead a bike that is taken out and used. Got yourself a new sub.
I have a good working wiring loom minus the instrument wiring do i need to buy the instruemnt wiring just so everything can be wired up properly and a new ignition coil for my XL175 on having a chance on running
Awesome man! Because of this I just bought a 19774 Kawasaki KDX 2 stroke engine to rebuild. I want to get into bikes, and I am a rally car guy, so I figured it might be a good way to get introduced! It would be a massive help if you let me know what special tools I would need other than your basic ones! Subscribed to your channel man keep the content coming!
Unreal dude, love hearing this!! You don't really need much to work on bikes, obviously a few basic tools: tyre irons, socket set, screwdrivers, alan keys, wrenches, multigrips, vice grips, lots of rags, degreaser, gasket sealant, chain braker tool, multimeter, sandpaper, spraypaint. Haha, maybe that's a fair bit of stuff... If your bike doesn't have a centre stand you will also benefit from getting some kind of jack for it! Best of luck dude, keep me updated! Cheers
Brilliant. Very well done. Impressive determination. Your face when it finally fired was awesome to behold. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. I suggest you head on over to Mustie1's channel and see how he tackled the 125cc version of your bike. You are chalk and cheese when it comes to being experienced and yet did the same job for different reasons. You might learn a bit more about the art of vlogging as well. Mustie has a uniquely accessible style not dissimilar to your own. We can all learn :) Thank you.
Mate that was awesome, by the way I have an even better self portrait than the one you made of you. We could do a calendar together, call it “snail trails 2019”
Cool and thumbed! Did you use a gasket and sealant when mating the valve cover to head? Need to do this soon... Any idea for joining/sealing/mating/feking leaks on crankcase covers one week after its feking rebuilt. Some use gasket only, others sealant or gasket with grease etc. Whats the best way? Thanks.
Hey man, my dad and I are trying to restore his 1974 xl175, I was wondering where you managed to find parts for your bike? We have had a hard time finding parts that fit, even if they say they do.
I thought you were gonna have to weld a wrench to those valve covers....ask me how I know Sad that Honda destroyed the British Motorcycle Industry in the space of 5 years. Your video emphasizes the awesome Japanese production design👍👍👍
Excellent series. I highly recommend making your own gaskets instead of using that goop rubbish. It's a nuisance having a sloppily repaired bike that constantly leaks. Life is too short for that nonsense. I hope your channel explodes - it definitely will if you keep restoring Honda bikes.
Hey ,how is the little Honda going ,broke the kick start shaft again yet ,such an annoying but common problem .I have a bunch of these bike to restore one day ,they are a funky old model and to some ,quite alluring inspite of them once being rated the worst dirt bike ever made ,
I stumbled upon this series today and watched all six. Great job. Your perseverance is amazing. I'm very proud of you. Tighten your cam chain asap tho! LOL
Your reaction when bike kicked over was priceless!
I'm restoring an XL 175 my self as my first project/motorcycle. These videos have helped me a lot, thanks man!

Damn good job.
So much frustration and work, I can imagine how that felt- AMAZING, thanks for sharing this!! Now, go find another one!!
Everyone should have this much joy!!! Awesome! Congrats!!

Very enjoyable series. I now know to avoid the XL175 since I don't have access to the sort of resources you've got. An amazing project, nicely done!
i experienced that joy with my 74 cb125s last week!
😎
Glad you made it. Each I watched each part there a building concern that, after all that effort, you still didn't know if you would eventually get a usable bike at the end of it.

I had a 78 Xl 175 back in the 80s. It was a hand me down that had went through both my brothers. Some people hand down clothes, we did motorbikes and guns.
Good job, I must admit I was shaking my head at a few things you were doing. But no big deal.
No better feeling than a bike finally starting after all that work, been in the same boat many times, that's tits. Love old bikes, rebuilt a 78 Suzuki gp100 myself and I know what it's like trying to deal with old shit
