The fried hokkien mee which you had tried is actually a Malaysian Chinese food, to be exact, created and made popular in Kuala Lumpur, the style and ingredient actually varies in different parts of the country, e.g. in Penang, the dish with the same name is totally different.

Just to add to conversation, most durians that are home grown and/or uncategorized are likely to be tough and tasteless. If you're going to start trying out durians for the first time, it is important to know which types of durian you're going for because they taste very very different. The Musang King would be a safe start for people who've never had durian. It has a sweet taste and an almost creamy like texture, maybe you won't like it as much but you definitely wouldn't hate it. My personal favourite durian is the D24. It has a light bitter taste at the beginning followed by a mellow sweetness. Hope this helps out any aspiring durian eaters out there. Cheers.

what you had was kl hokkien mee. in northen states, hokkien mee is a soup noodle made of prawn broth or what we in kl call "prawn noodle".
also, consuming durian with alcohol/carbonated water will create a huge gas built up in your body which may cause discomfort.

Like many others said here, that Hokkien Mee you had is not from Mainland China, but a KL speciality. It is called Hokkien Mee just because the original cook is of Hokkien (Fujian) heritage. It's too oily and lardy for me personally.
And on alcohol and durian, there seems to be some truth to it. There is a study by Tsukuba Univeristy on this. That stinkiness in durian comes from having a lot of sulphurous compounds, and sulphur can put a burden on your liver. That slows down your body's capability to process alcohol.

But it's convenient if you wanna try different dishes. Also the taste isn't bad and reason it's touristy is because of the price and I don't think that's their concern. I personally would bring my foreign friends there it just saves so much trouble traveling to different places.
