What happens when the Rowan trees form a canopy? Don't the Alpine plants then die?
You need some management in the form of grazing to keep a balance surely.
Having an exclosure to keep herbivores out is as artificial as stocking the fell with sheep.

Thanks for the question. In these conditions, the Rowan trees won't grow in such densities that they totally shade out the Alpine plants, and they are unlikely to grow particularly tall either. Mountainous trees tend to be low-growing and sparse due to the terrain and weather. It's all about balance, so you're right, some grazing is important in the future but when an area has been over-grazed for decades, a long rest period is required before bringing back grazing. The grazing then needed is with lower numbers of heavy herbivores like cattle and ponies. - Annabel
