Carl is so accomplished, a terrific percussionist and drummer. Loved his playing with ELP...a standout British drummer, along with Bonham, Collins and Bruford!
It was a kit he collaborated with British Steel. It was British Steel who initiated it.. Drummers love the sound of Steel but its expensive and heavy. A logistics nightmare. It was a complete half inch Steel drum kit. More to it. A jeweller engraved animal scenes on each drum Another fact. It was one of if not the first drum synthesizers kits. He worked with Bob moog to make several drums synthesizers when triggered. Everyone thought it was Emerson during toccata. It was all palmer. Another problem was 2.5 ton bass was too heavy for most venues. Many needed to be reinforced. Ringo auctioned the kit. A friend of carls i believe named frangioni purchased it last I heard. They're attempting to get it for a museum last I heard
I saw Carl Palmer with Atomic Rooster in a small club in 1969 and his thing then was to take his t-shirt off during his solo. Your "short and sweet" comment made me think of it and how many guitar players have gotten grumpy through drum solos that were either way too long or lacked some other kind of distraction. Hahahaha
I was once told that to become a master of the drum set, you first had to master each component of the drum set, practice until you can get every sound possible on each individual component, then you start putting those sounds together, from sticking/brush techniques on drums, to same on cymbals, scratches, butt strikes etc,
I first saw ELP on 1 April 1973 at Vorst National in Brussels. What a great band live and Carl is an awesome 😎 and interesting drummer who crafted such beautiful details into the music 👏👏👏🥂
Carl kept up straight classical studies for a very long time, not sure how long. There's a clip of him from a 1973 ELP documentary that shows him playing through "William Tell Overture" on timpani with his very old, very British, very not-rock instructor looking on.
That 'very not rock looking instructor' was James Blades master percussionist who was the Professor of Percussion at the Royal Academy of Music he also taught Evelyn Glennie!
Carl Palmer has to be one of favorite rock drummer's today.Ive seen ELP at least 4 times incredible performance. Carl displays old school drumming techniques. When Johnny Carson asked who he liked in today's music Ala 70's, he said with out hesitation Carl Palmer..he said he was a fan of the group.
If you go to the description in the original video, you'll see this is one in a five-part film of Carl soloing on various parts of the kit, leading up to an 11-minute solo with the full kit.
Always Been My Favorite Percussionist ( if that is how it is Spelled lol ) Since 1975 .. 🇺🇸 In My Eye's And Ears Hands Down For Mr.Palmer for the Best AND Cozy Powell As Well 😉
As I think I told you before, Carl took lessons years ago from my neighbor, Roy Burns. I know YOU know who Roy is...but many people sadly don't. Roy was AS GOOD AS ANY DRUMMER TO EVER GRACE THE EARTH. RIP, Mr. Burns
i have a wonderful suggestion for the 1 individual who gave carl palmer a thumbs down: TURN THE VOLUME ON YOUR COMPUTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's difficult to listen to music when the volume is off!!!!!!!!!!!!! so therefore turn the volume on,slide ithe volume all the way to the right and then GIVE CARL PALMER A THUMBS UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I suppose you are aware of the Black Page drum solo composed by Frank Zappa and played by Terry Bozio. I would like to know what you think of that. I am not an expert, but from what I hear it is one of the most difficult pieces in existence
Not back in the day. HGe routinely won many top drummer awards, impressive when one stops to consider who were playing in their prime back then. People forget him now thanks to a passionate aversion of progressive rock in general and ELP in particular by the "esteemed rock press." That ELP is not in the RRHoF is a crime...
those who where in Montreal Olympic stadium 1977 witched a master like no other with incredible playing - I have seen many groups with good drummers like Billy Cobham Cosy Powell etc but to me no one can match Carl in the 70s note he is older there Carls Palmer at California Jam and Monteral in 1977 - Carl would play long long peaces like Carnival 9. and Tarkus or Pictures at an Exhibition and then do a long solo - while most just play easy 3-4 min songs and then a drum solo ELP's long songs where like a long solo. so demanding - but yes Play Toccata from ELP's live concert in Monteral just the intro and ending of song are demanding - b Here is the link ruclips.net/video/PrfqVAaR2YQ/видео.html seen Collins and Powell and Cobham and others - to me no match. - just the amount of drumming during an ELP concert where they play 20 to 30 min songs full speed and then this
Not really you're wrong anybody can make a lot of noise but a lot of drums . You might be a drum kedron what you need to really listen and watch him and Keith Moon will always be the world's two top best drummers . And he is the world's fastest .
Carl was at his best in the mid 70s Check out his Works Tour Solo in 77 For me Carl is the best drummer of my generation Buddy Rich would be for me the only drummer better
Who the hell is better? Advanced? How? I've never seen anything like him or Buddy or Roy. I watch all these famous drummers people claim are the best. Then I show them Carl..
Carl is so accomplished, a terrific percussionist and drummer. Loved his playing with ELP...a standout British drummer, along with Bonham, Collins and Bruford!
Don't forget about John Marshall , Jon Hiseman and Cozy Powell
@@lamecasuelas2 Yes sorry you are absolutely right. How could I forget, I attended a workshop with John Marshall and a gig with Jon Hiseman! 🙏
@@carlnewman5448 woah! That must have been cool. In my mind he Is Up There with the likes of Billy Cobham and Narada Michael Walden
@@lamecasuelas2 yes definitely, so talented!
Barrymore Barlow of Tull
CARL HAD SO MUCH SKILL AS A YOUNG MAN AND HES STILL GOT THE SPEED I JUST LOVE HIM
His solo performances with elp in the 70s is unforgettable
Carl is one of my favourite drummers and a nice guy too. To think he toured with ELP playing a 2.5 tonne kit!!!
And if I remember correctly Ringo Starr sold that kit to auction.
It was a kit he collaborated with British Steel. It was British Steel who initiated it..
Drummers love the sound of Steel but its expensive and heavy. A logistics nightmare.

More to it. A jeweller engraved animal scenes on each drum

When I cross myself, I say"Emerson Lake and Palmer "🗿
CARL PALMER IS TRULY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,,,buddy rich is looking down from heaven with such pride and joy !!!!!!!!!!!!
Buddy rich once called Carl the most technically proficient drummers he'd ever seen
Hahahaha
How clever was that Garey. Loved it. I am a big ELP fan.

I attended an ELP concert during the summer of 1977. This would be their “Works” tour... Fantastic show! 👍🏻☘️
The concept, by the way, was at the, then, Baltimore Civic Center.. It was a relic when it was built..
Check out Carl's Solo after "Wildest Dreams" on the Asia in Asia Concert in Tokyo with Greg Lake. Excellent.
I love "Wildest Dreams." He has a cool feature in Asia's "Holy War," too.
Oh, I love that! And the Japanese camera crew working that show understood the assignment!
Terrific. My only wish is that we'd gotten more recorded output from him over the years.
Carl kept up straight classical studies for a very long time, not sure how long. There's a clip of him from a 1973 ELP documentary that shows him playing through "William Tell Overture" on timpani with his very old, very British, very not-rock instructor looking on.

there is a longer version of this live at one of carls drum clinics .. go check it out! .... his back sticking speed on that is breathtaking!
How about a Terry Bozzio video Carl is my favorite out of all drummers personally but Terry is really amazing too
Tarzan
Amazing soloist
FYI buddy rich had no use for rock music other than emerson lake and palmer because of Carl! That is cool.
Buddy called carls one of the most technically proficient drummers he'd ever seen
Carl could play a number of genres including jazz.
ELP Cal Jam One ! 1974 😍 HS Class of 1975 😊
I like this channel!!!

Someone showed up early for band camp back in the day.
Palmer is the reason why I play drums.
Same. He, Billy Cobham, and Neil Peart were my triumverate.
Search for Emerson lake and Palmer California jam. Karnevil @ part 2
Awesome solo
This was part of a film made about Carl and this is just one short part of it!
As I think I told you before, Carl took lessons years ago from my neighbor, Roy Burns. I know YOU know who Roy is...but many people sadly don't. Roy was AS GOOD AS ANY DRUMMER TO EVER GRACE THE EARTH. RIP, Mr. Burns
Time for a Roy Burns drum solo! Thanks for sharing!
You should check out Carl Palmer doing a solo on a full kit
RUclips has a couple of him playing the steel kit with one of the first of not the first drum synthesizers kits designed by Carl and moog.

Thanks!
A master i would say...
Hey Carl, Wanna Play!!!
Get whacky w that Ringo and Moonie video. It’s not them playing it’s them drinking and getting silly !?!

Notice that his hair is completely grey.
Romain Goulon is the king of modern drumming.
