I whole heartedly concur with your statement. I consider myself lucky to have seen them in concert three times, and I am fortunate to have known what I was seeing and hearing at the time. My all time favorite band. Also, was thrilled to be standing within 4 feet of Carl after a concert that they put on at the " Snitz " [ the Arlene Snitzer Concert Hall ] in Portland Oregon in I believe sometime in the 90s. I still chuckle over that memory because my buddy that I attended the concert with had to reach out and just touch Carl as he was talking to approx. 3 or 4 girls at the door of his bus. Carl didn't even blink an eye. But inside I was chuckling because my buddy Charlie is like a genius IQ and was compelled to " touch " Carl. I would have loved to have gotten his autograph but it was obvious to me he was simply to involved in conversation with these girls. I will say this though about Carl. He is " the " best drummer, most technical, musical, physical there has ever been. Yes there are and have been amazing, phenomenal, wonderful drummers. Not to take anything away from them. I love them too. But Carl was something else, on a much higher level in his prime than anybody. As was Keith and Greg.
Classy and full of humility. All three have hearts of gold and such clarity and precision in their music. I remember when I heard them when they first became popular, I thought they must have landed from another planet. As Greg said, in their maturity they came to appreciate each other that much more. Same with me. To me they will always be appreciated. I only wish that Kieth and Greg had the good health that Carl still has. I’m a drummer and you are so amazing, Carl. I had the privilege - I mean THE privilege - of seeing them live twice in Argentina (1993 and 1997), and they blew me away. Speechless. Absolutely amazing. I do hope Carl brings his new ELP Legacy show to Argentina soon.

There are better bass players than Greg Lake but what makes a great group is not so much the best individual players but players that work well together.
The phrase, "Super Group" has aptly been applied to artists like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Cream's Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, but far and away it finds its best manifestation in Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Keith's incomparable and devastatingly consistent keyboard mastery over complex and sophisticated charts is a marvel to witness and hear; Greg's guitar, bass and vocal prowess are second to none; and Carl's over-the-top drumming and percussion made them a unique and cohesive unit comprised of three extraordinarily talented and gifted creators of music that will stand the test of time. No one has ever done it better, and probably never will this side of heaven.
Not only exceptional musicians, but really sympathetic persons. The way they talk, he view they put foward - they were really something fantastic! There will be nothing comparable for a long time, I think.
Listening several times to this, I just repeat myself: not just the most exceptional musicians of the late 20th century, but also very sympathetic guys. The way they talk, their view on the computerized "music", their friendship - all of it. I regret that I never had the chance to shake their hands.

They were magnificent artists that cared about their creations and Greg sang his poetry. What a thrill it would have been to see them perform live. They were truly one of a kind and we don't get music like theirs anymore. Auto tune is not music. The 60's, 70's and early 80's were a special time.

I loved this band!! These guys had so much class in everything they did. Very different, especially for the 70s!! Never to be equalled. I just read about Emerson's death, and was shocked to hear he took his own life after receiving "troll" comments about his disability effecting his performances. That people could be so cruel to a great artist who played and wrote music for people to enjoy, makes me sick!!!
What a great interview. The main reason it was a great interview was because of how the interviewer posed his questions and kept BS dialog and opinions out of it. This is textbook on how to interview musicians and keep them actually interested in the interview .... after of course them doing a thousand of these every year. I remember being back stage with a group such as this years ago and having no more than a few minutes with each band member and having to come up with a couple of quick questions for each and hoping the questions would be enough to actually engage them to answer them from the heart. It's not easy but in the end it turned out fantastic. Great job Barry ....

I born in '90 and I agree with Greg. The first album that I heard of them was Trilogy... amazing. They' re genius. I starting to studying piano because Keith. Palmer you're the Percussion!
Young people have no idea how valuable it is to have so much direct real time access to their heros. I was such an ELP fan and even spoke with Carl a few times when I lived in NY, sent him birthday cards in Spain, etc. But we had no access to people like these without extraordinary effort (which I made to have this contact!)--otherwise so much happened around us that we maybe only accidentally witnessed.

Wish this was an announcement for an upcoming tour. Fans can be brutal and it's tragic it contributed to pushing Keith Emerson to the brink. Even with no longer to performing there's so many other related areas he could have been involved with, even teaching. I've had my down moments and I make myself aware I still have so much potential challenging me. But Keith I guess is now performing the show that never ends and never will. Thank you, Keith Emerson for being part of one of my favorite studio and live bands.

Later he looked like Jerry Mathers ( leave it to beaver) damn now he looks so Bloated. Like he's got a medical condition . That's dangerous health wise . He can get diabetes , or worse. I can empathize with Keith Emerson . I have several autoimmune diseases- and am taking a biologic that further diminished my immune system . But who knows if the benefit outweighs the risk. Additionally I have reynauds syndrome , dupertrins contracture, trigger finger and deep nerve like pain in my hands , so for Keith not being able to play keyboards and having other health issues- me coupled with my own depression are getting dangerously close to repeating his fate! To quote a passage in the book Neal Peart refers to in "ghost rider", " the only reason I'm alive is because I cannot die " you may know of (cont'd)

But yes composing - and still make use of technology- I have that double CD. in 1974 I saw that welcome back tour High energy. Sometimes a band is better off calling it a day when at their peak. So it's not about the money - But bands like moody blues - 50 year anniversary of days of further passed- without Mike Pinder and without Ray Thomas ? And ethereal vocal harmonies? I observe it my own way- Listen to it on a high end audio system The vinyl with the original Track to evening time to get away Where they all harmonize and John Lodge's haunting falsetto just weaves in and out of the music. Days of live performance past.
Many medications can make you gain weight, including high blood pressure medications. I should know. Plus it just could be genetics. Some people put on weight, no matter how little they eat or how much exercise they do. It could have also been something that had to do with his thyroid. But God Bless Him, it was pancreatic cancer that got him in the end, and considering he was a long time smoker I would have thought it would have been lung cancer instead. But he and Keith are up there in heaven where they are both forever young and handsome and having a great time playing in God's band with all the other musicians who went before and after them. You know that has to be one great band! I can't wait to see that concert when I get there. The Show That Never Ends!!
I think these guys could care less about fame or awards.They are all accomplished musicians and fantastic at their instruments of choice.Alot of the people in the hall of fame are not songwriters.Its all laid out for them.ELP does it all.They compose,produce and engineer their music.
hi john, I have seen comments like yours before. In all due respect & understanding of your opinion, we all know ELP is their own legacy. They don't need awards to be recognized nor remembered for their contributions, creativity, etc. But add another dimension to the thought: their families and loved ones. I just saw Carl & ELP Legacy band in California on 3/25/18 and I asked Carl directly about this exact thing. His response was "why bother this late?" I said "but it is as much about your loved ones and families as it is anything else." He responded with a nod "yes." As with Moody Blues, who were just nominated last year (2017) and are being inducted 4/14/18, they, too, once expressed "why bother this late?" but as of recent. have expressed joy over getting the award and thank their fans. We know ELP doesn't need another award but maybe, just maybe, them being nominated will help others that may have never heard about them "discover" who ELP was. That in itself is an added bonus! The term 'best in the world' gets thrown around a lot and at times overused but i can't think of any 3 musicians in any genre who embodies that title more than Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. It doesn't get any better than ELP.
As a drummer ( in my younger years ) I get into discussions about greatest bands and drummers. I know for a fact Buddy Rich is the grand dad to set the high mark but Carl Palmer is Bruce Lee when it comes to precise and technical style.
Back in the day, you could have been a fan of all of the usual suspects for many years, but never heard any of them so much as speak never mind interviewed at length. They were like some kind of mystical gods that seems to come from nowhere and go back to where ever that was afterward. Now especially with RUclips, you can see that they were just reasonably ordinary lower-middle-class guys from somewhere in the UK and usually the southeastern part of it. It is amazing how my little part of the world has produced so many of these never to be replaced or forgotten individuals. Greg in particular wrote some of the best ballads ever written and had a vocal style all of his own.
Here it is, 2021. My avatar is Keith Emerson, and ELP still my favorite band with the Moody Blues and Beach Boys close after. Strange top three to some, but to each his own.

Not only exceptional musicians, but really sympathetic persons. The way they talk, he view they put foward - they were really something fantastic! There will be nothing comparable for a long time, I think.
Listening several times to this, I just repeat myself: not just the most exceptional musicians of the late 20th century, but also very sympathetic guys. The way they talk, their view on the computerized "music", their friendship - all of it.
I regret that I never had the chance to shake their hands.

All the frequencies of music with acoustic back ground and all the mechanisms and talent will never be replaced. I surely miss Greg Lake and all the people that enfluenced me to play 50 odd or not so odd years. Thank you all!
They were magnificent artists that cared about their creations and Greg sang his poetry. What a thrill it would have been to see them perform live. They were truly one of a kind and we don't get music like theirs anymore. Auto tune is not music. The 60's, 70's and early 80's were a special time.

Being of a certain age, I was able to see ELP live multiple times and each show was better than the last. I didn't think that was possible but it truly was...three of the greatest artists of their era, and there were a lot of great artists during that period...
Saw ELP in 1972, and in 1974 at the infamous California Jam. Total class, pros, good guys all. We'll never see this level of rock again.

I loved this band!! These guys had so much class in everything they did. Very different, especially for the 70s!! Never to be equalled. I just read about Emerson's death, and was shocked to hear he took his own life after receiving "troll" comments about his disability effecting his performances. That people could be so cruel to a great artist who played and wrote music for people to enjoy, makes me sick!!!

What a great interview. The main reason it was a great interview was because of how the interviewer posed his questions and kept BS dialog and opinions out of it. This is textbook on how to interview musicians and keep them actually interested in the interview .... after of course them doing a thousand of these every year. I remember being back stage with a group such as this years ago and having no more than a few minutes with each band member and having to come up with a couple of quick questions for each and hoping the questions would be enough to actually engage them to answer them from the heart. It's not easy but in the end it turned out fantastic. Great job Barry ....

Great album. Usually when groups come bach after a long time away they seem lose a little something. This album simply seemed to be the next album in their evolution.
Some people say that ELP wasn’t a very good band because they didn’t play music to dance to. That’s because ELP didn’t play music just to sell records, they played it because they were artists showing off their talents.When ELP formed they combined 3 of the best musical minds of all time. Greg Lake was a visionary of words through his music and Keith Emerson was the alchemist of visionary keyboards. Even from this 27 year old interview, Lake was precise about he forcast about the future of the music industry.
So many examples are there to prove your point. The one that's in my mind right now is Farewell To Arms.
These gentlemen should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were the best at Prog Rock. And sadly 2 of them are gone and will never get the chance to experience that feeling. And the gentleman asking questions, I know it was done in the early 90s , but he asked the same question 4 different times , just reworded, about sampling and their thoughts on it.

I born in '90 and I agree with Greg. The first album that I heard of them was Trilogy... amazing. They' re genius. I starting to studying piano because Keith. Palmer you're the Percussion!
Young people have no idea how valuable it is to have so much direct real time access to their heros. I was such an ELP fan and even spoke with Carl a few times when I lived in NY, sent him birthday cards in Spain, etc. But we had no access to people like these without extraordinary effort (which I made to have this contact!)--otherwise so much happened around us that we maybe only accidentally witnessed.

Wish this was an announcement for an upcoming tour. Fans can be brutal and it's tragic it contributed to pushing Keith Emerson to the brink. Even with no longer to performing there's so many other related areas he could have been involved with, even teaching.
I've had my down moments and I make myself aware I still have so much potential challenging me.
But Keith I guess is now performing the show that never ends and never will. Thank you, Keith Emerson for being part of one of my favorite studio and live bands.

Bloated. Like he's got a medical condition . That's dangerous health wise . He can get diabetes , or worse. I can empathize with Keith Emerson . I have several autoimmune diseases- and am taking a biologic that further diminished my immune system . But who knows if the benefit outweighs the risk.
Additionally I have reynauds syndrome , dupertrins contracture, trigger finger and deep nerve like pain in my hands , so for Keith not being able to play keyboards and having other health issues- me coupled with my own depression are getting dangerously close to repeating his fate!
To quote a passage in the book Neal Peart refers to in "ghost rider", " the only reason I'm alive is because I cannot die " you may know of (cont'd)

Days of live performance past.
Many medications can make you gain weight, including high blood pressure medications. I should know. Plus it just could be genetics. Some people put on weight, no matter how little they eat or how much exercise they do. It could have also been something that had to do with his thyroid. But God Bless Him, it was pancreatic cancer that got him in the end, and considering he was a long time smoker I would have thought it would have been lung cancer instead. But he and Keith are up there in heaven where they are both forever young and handsome and having a great time playing in God's band with all the other musicians who went before and after them. You know that has to be one great band! I can't wait to see that concert when I get there. The Show That Never Ends!!

I think these guys could care less about fame or awards.They are all accomplished musicians and fantastic at their instruments of choice.Alot of the people in the hall of fame are not songwriters.Its all laid out for them.ELP does it all.They compose,produce and engineer their music.
hi john, I have seen comments like yours before. In all due respect & understanding of your opinion, we all know ELP is their own legacy. They don't need awards to be recognized nor remembered for their contributions, creativity, etc. But add another dimension to the thought: their families and loved ones. I just saw Carl & ELP Legacy band in California on 3/25/18 and I asked Carl directly about this exact thing. His response was "why bother this late?" I said "but it is as much about your loved ones and families as it is anything else." He responded with a nod "yes." As with Moody Blues, who were just nominated last year (2017) and are being inducted 4/14/18, they, too, once expressed "why bother this late?" but as of recent. have expressed joy over getting the award and thank their fans. We know ELP doesn't need another award but maybe, just maybe, them being nominated will help others that may have never heard about them "discover" who ELP was. That in itself is an added bonus! Have a great day.

Wow....asked the question....where they'd be in five years. Keith took his life, and Greg passed with cancer. I loved their music....their shows.....technically and eclectically brilliant...with soul....spanning various genres and styles. RIP Keith and Greg.

Same here. I wish I could have told him that his fans still love him that he has done great works and still does. Not to give any respect for those who criticized him for one can't be criticized unless you have respect for their opinion. Greg kept quiet about his cancer. I could have shown him that cancer can be overcome with a change is lifestyle and diet as I have others. Thank God for youtube for giving us a forum to vent out our feelings.

The term 'best in the world' gets thrown around a lot and at times overused but i can't think of any 3 musicians in any genre who embodies that title more than Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. It doesn't get any better than ELP.
I watched their 1992 tour concert in MA. I'm so glad for the memories.
As a drummer ( in my younger years ) I get into discussions about greatest bands and drummers. I know for a fact Buddy Rich is the grand dad to set the high mark but Carl Palmer is Bruce Lee when it comes to precise and technical style.

Back in the day, you could have been a fan of all of the usual suspects for many years, but never heard any of them so much as speak never mind interviewed at length. They were like some kind of mystical gods that seems to come from nowhere and go back to where ever that was afterward.
Now especially with RUclips, you can see that they were just reasonably ordinary lower-middle-class guys from somewhere in the UK and usually the southeastern part of it. It is amazing how my little part of the world has produced so many of these never to be replaced or forgotten individuals.
Greg in particular wrote some of the best ballads ever written and had a vocal style all of his own.
