Yeah, like in classical music all those pieces would be called movements. I was confused as heck about that until researching info on ELP to figure out what was going on. A very unique way for a rock band to present. But they were PROGRESSIVE rock, which would make sense.

Not forgetting the lines "Performing on a stool, we've a sight to make you drool - seven virgins and a mule. Keep it cool, keep it cool!" which were edited out of the clip (presumably because of the prudish attitude of the American TV networks at the time).

What's funny is how Carl's drums absolutely do not move when he's playing that drum kit he had in the 70s. Look at any other drum kit, even the mega-sturdy sets Neil Peart used, and the drums move from the force you hit them with. But not Carl, who was using a stainless steel kit with half-inch steel shells that weighed nearly 2.5 TONS! Neil Peart's kit probably weighed 10% of that. So those suckers don't move, no matter how hard he played. Google "Carl Palmer Steel Drum Set" if you are interested.

ELP are simply the best band ever appeared in the "rock" era(but they also include amazing classical and jazz on their incredible music). The best thing of ELP is that they are a keyboard led band with the superhuman Keith Emerson so that they have very different sounds rather than usually boring guitars. Then they have the incredible angel voice of Greg Lake and the powerful drumming of Carl Palmer in order to complete the picture.

Three of the best musicians of their time and any time. Greg Lake also had a terrific voice. Other songs to check out from them would be Peter Gunn and Fanfare for the Common Man (both instrumentals), Lucky Man a classic ballad and one of my favorites Knifes Edge which had a heavy metal feel to it from a mostly Prog band. Amazing group of musicians. Finally, I think it was also from this show and not sure which song but keyboardist Keith Emerson spins in the air while playing his keyboard.

As luck would have it, after a concert in 1987 I got to hang out with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer for a few minutes on the tour bus!!! They were so gracious!!! Also, after a reunion tour in 1995 I got to go to a meet and greet with the band before the show, and again an experience of a lifetime!!! Browsing through the huge selection, I saw a big display of the newly released album by Emerson, Lake, & Palmer titled of all things 'Brain Salad Surgery'. Wow, how wild & cool is that ? I hadn't heard them before, but my eyes were transfixed to the amazing artwork on the cover by H.R. Geiger. "Holy Crap,. that's freakin amazing looking." I bought the album just because of that cover art. I pedaled my butt home just as fast as my legs could go, so I could fire up the record player & hear what this could be. my friends in college introduced me to ELP. i was immediately struck by the genius of Greg Lake and Keith Emerson. i had never heard a keyboard / organ / piano played like Keith did. i often think of Kai and Jukka in terms of ELP's drummers, Kai is the technician like Carl Palmer, and Jukka is the powerhouse like Cozy Powell. sad that Keith and Greg both died the same year. Greg died from cancer and Keith killed himself. Cozy was lost to a car wreck. RIP.
songs to explore for those new to these guys: "Still...You Turn Me On", "Lucky Man", "Hoedown"
from Emerson, Lake, and Powell: "Touch and Go", "Step Aside", "Lay Down Your Guns", "Love Blind", "The Score", "Mars, The Bringer of War"
from 3 to The Power of 3, their last project, Greg Lake was replaced by Robert Berry: "Talkin 'Bout", "Lover to Lover", "Chains", "8 Miles High"
i had despaired that i would never find another group that amazed me like these guys. until i found Nightwish.

Definitely the "Greatest Show On Earth" that night. I was there! Just a side note, ELP is not pronounced as a word just say the letters. Glad you enjoyed this video. ELP were the headliners and closed the show. The day started with Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, The Eagles, Seals and Croft, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and ELP. Linda Lovelace stopped by to say hello during the day.

Was lucky enough to see them live in 1977 The Works tour with a 70 piece orchestra on stage with them. Keith Emerson on keys Greg Lake vocals Guitar and Bass and Carl Palmer Percussions. I think they edited out a verse.. Performing on a stool we've a sight to make you drool. Seven Virgins and Mule keep it cool keep it cool. Couldn't write that in today's environment. Ha!

I saw them live at the WVU Coliseum in January 1978. I didn't know anything about them before the show, but with my first opportunity after, I scampered downtown to the record shop and bought their live album "Welcome Back My Friends, to the Show that Never Ends". Do yourself a favor and listen to all the movements of this song. It's available on RUclips. Then do us a favor and do a reaction video to Tarkus off of that live album.

Back to my childhood! I was 6 years old in '74. Emerson, Lake and Palmer are most known for their cover of Fanfare For The Common Man by Aaron Copeland. They filmed the video in the Toronto Olympic Stadium. Greg Lake is also famous for his solo hit, I Believe In Father Christmas.

Most known for their cover of "Fanfare for the Common man?" They were known for a lot more than that. At the time Carl Palmer was arguably the best rock drummer in the word as keith Emerson remains to this day, the best rock keyboard player ever. Greg lake one of the best rock voices ever. One of the first to be known as a "super group" given their origins in The Nice, King Crimson and The Crazy World of Authur Brown.

This section of "Karn Evil 9", it's 4 parts on the "Brain Salad Surgery" album 1st impression part 1 & 2, 2nd Impression and 3rd impression, the 1st impression was the last track on side 1 this started the 1st track on side 2. This video was turned into their live triple album "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends", it was also a double casette, 8-track and compact disc. I've owned Brain Salad Surgery and Welcome Back my Friends on album, 8-track, cassette and CD in the last 50 years. Well kids, this is what us KIDS who grew up in the seventies enjoyed when it came out.

It’s E. L. P. - Emerson Lake & Palmer. Keith Emerson, Keys, committed suicide when his arthritis got so bad he couldn’t play anymore. Greg Lake, singer , guitarist, bassist died of brain cancer. Palmer is still playing. I never realized he had such chops til I saw him live. Just as good as Peart.
