Emerson, Lake and Palmer were undoubtably one of the most ambitious and innovative of the British progressive rock bands. They released groundbreaking studio and live albums where they pushed musical boundaries to their limits. Although many people refer to ELP as prog rock band, they’re much more than that. Their music is eclectic. They draw inspiration from a variety of sources including folk rock, jazz, rock and classical music.
From 1970 to 1974 it seemed that ELP could do no wrong. They were one of the most successful bands on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming festival favourites and stadium fillers. ELP were true titans of progressive rock and left a lasting impact on the music scene of their era. A visionary band, their music was not only innovative and inventive but also highly influential. The albums "Emerson, Lake and Palmer," "'Pictures at an Exhibition," "Tarkus," "Trilogy," "'Brain Salad, Surgery," and 1974's "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends...." are timeless, epic and ambitious, featuring a group at the peak of their creative powers. - edited from DEREKSMUSICBLOG

Let me tell you ladies something, you've cheated yourselves. As someone who's been a big Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fan for over 50 years, there is so much more to this song. I bought "Brain Salad Surgery" in 1973 and "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends...." in 1974. The whole song goes just shy of 30 minutes on the studio album and over 35 minutes live.
Having listened to both versions probably 100's of times over the years, it's an experience that shouldn't be missed.

I never saw ELP in concert but I did see Carl Palmer playing with the group Asia. One of the few drummers that plays conventional style (One hand overarm, other hand underarm like military drummers). Sadly the only surviving member of the band here.

Really glad you reacted to this!! ELP and Yes was what we were listening to when we were 14 years old. I was fortunate to see them several times back in the day, and met them twice at meet and greets. They were very gracious!! And your circus reference is correct! Karn Evil is a reference to "carnival". The entire recording of Karn Evil 9 is over 20 minutes long with three separate impressions.

Magnificent masterpiece, difficult to digest at first glance for those who are not used to this level of complexity. This live version incorporates an excellent extended solo by Palmer, where he shows that in addition to being able to play very finely in the jazz style, he could also be a real beast on the drums.

Karn Evil 1st impression ..... Does...The Greatest Show on Turf.... sound familiar? The Rams used this song for their theme in the early 2000's. The song was played at the beginning of the broadcast of their games. This is actually Part 2 of the 1st impression. It starts at the end of side 1 on the album. The Carnival section begins during the last 3 minutes of part one. Then you flip the album over and you get part 2 which starts with welcome back my friends.

Other great listens by ELP include Tarkus and Trilogy. One little story from Emerson’s autobiography ’Pictures on an Exhibitionist’ tells of a stadium gig in Japan when due to torrential rain the power failed, Keith and Greg left the stage leaving Carl to perform a drum solo. On finding out that there was no chance of the power being restored, they got into a limo and headed back to the hotel. When they were a couple of miles away from the stadium they rolled down the window and could still hear Carl playing! Needless to say, when Carl eventually got back to the hotel he wasn’t too happy with them.

This was from a live network television program that aired weekends (I think Fridays) on ABC. The concert was the first California Jam, 1974. It was one of the first concerts that also had its audio simulcast over FM radio, the idea being that people could listen to higher quality stereo audio while watching on television. All of this would have been quite a technical logistical achievement for that time...ELP headlined over several superstar level bands, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and The Eagles...

Karn Evil is "carnival". The Karn Evil song group are 4 songs that tell a story of humanity creating technology to where technology passes humanity and finds humans to be useless. The song you saw is a show of various human acts displayed for others to see. Greg Lake sings the role of the carnival barker. The song's so busy because of the sensory overload one gets from a carnival.

So much of their music was next level and some of their best songs (like Karn Evil 9 or Tarkus) were broken up into "parts" or "movements" and you really have to listen to the whole thing to get the full effect. But that said, I think you ladies would get a kick out of a live version of "Knife Edge" or the studio version of "Pirates".

It really is about a futuristic circus with an amazing sideshow. Prog Rock at near it's zenith. However, the excesses that used to impress me; now sort of embarrass me.

This english rock band were brilliant but never quite had the success as other British bands...fanfare for the common man ....was their biggest success..they were around in the 70s and 80s.....
