Oh yes, To Catch a Thief is such a fantastic movie! In these videos, I generally focus on one movie's style in particular. But I adore To Catch a Thief too
My style icon is Cary Grant. His style is classic and timeless. Doesn't swing wildly with seasons. I've read that article by Cary Grant mentioned in this video more than 50 years ago
Really like the look where it is very simple across the top. Suit jacket, white shirt, and a tie that compliments (not contrasts) the color of the suit.
“You must, if possible, be born with a kind of elegance. It’s part of you, of yourself.” -Hubert de Givenchy. This certainly applies to Archibald Leach, whom was born into extremely modest conditions. In spite of his circumstances, he cultivated a level of refined elegance that was undeniably innate. Elegance that had nothing to do with money. Elegance that’ll never be personified by some wealthy rappers, athletes and reality stars emblazoned in logos. Cary Grant will never be forgotten 🙏🏽
@@Gent.Z Cary Grants sunglasses were made by Oliver Peoples & are still part of their range. Funnily enough I had been very tempted earlier this week to buy a pair, but as I'm in the UK and it's November I think I can wait a couple of months lol. Another great video btw.
Good morning..Cary Grant besides being a superb actor he was always beautifully dressed a product of old Hollywood..keep it simple and you will be just fine....enjoy your day in L.A.peace
I saw a bunch of movies starring Cary Grant, including North by Northwest and Notorious. And yes, he wore that same suit in North by Northwest the whole time, including rolling around on the dusty ground, because he was on the run the whole time. He did get it "sponged" and pressed at the hotel though. Cary also was a fan of Acqua di Parma Colonia.
Yes, he was indeed a fan of that cologne! A department store saleswoman actually convinced me to buy me my first bottle by telling me this fact 😅 I would like to do a video on sophisticated, classic colognes in the future
Is this for work and if so is that your dress code? If it’s your own personal style choice, how do the people around you and people you’re with respond?
Serendipitously watched North By North-West years ago and immediately fell in love with Cary Grant’s style and energy. Great niche video! Thank you for what you’re creating.
Great video & sumary of Cary Grant's style - thanks for sharing. One small point - Cary did wear tassel loafers in both To Catch a Thief and That Touch of Mink. HIMHO though, it's hard for the modern smart-casual gent to wear tassel loafers and match them to an outfit!
Thank you! I never noticed his loafers in those movies but thank you for pointing them out! Personally I own a pair of black tassel loafers but rarely wear them because they are hard to match to outfits!
Without a doubt the best actor of his era...a icon of understated allegiance and class..like Elvis all the men wanted to be him and all the woman wanted to be with him!!!.❤️🙏🇬🇧
Great vid! When building a wardrobe it takes a lot of restraint and discipline! Have you checked out Meermin? They’re sub 220ish. 360 Goodyear welted with a blind stitch. A more modern elegant/ modern last shape than Thursday’s.
With all due respect, the actors in films are usually not responsible for the clothes they wear in the film, although they may have input. Rather, there is a designated costume designer, and the clothes are costumes, designed to help tell the story. In the case of the film "North By Northwest," for example, the costume designer was Harry Kress. The costume designer for "To Catch a Thief" was Edith Head. Cary Grant surely did not choose his own clothes in any film.
Actually, in the case of Cary Grant that is not true. It is pretty well documented that he bought and supplied his own suits. He had suits made on Savile Row and by Cifonelli for the close up scenes, then had inexpensive copies made for the rough and tumble scenes. He was well known for being fairly tight of fist with his clothing, a lot of his 'buy the best you can afford and take very good care of it' must have been rooted in him from a young age. In almost all his movies he dressed like himself.
Cary Grant has always been a style icon for me. Even his casual outfit in To Catch a Thief was classic.

Cary Grant was an impeccable dresser. His wardrobe was always immaculate.
True, but he *did* often wear a tie clip- indeed be popularized wearing it at a slant.
North by North-west the best non-Bond movie with Grant that ever was! Timeless style !
Now you say that, you’re right, it is totally Bond-esque!
He could have been a perfect Bond if he were a bit younger ..
I think you're forgetting Charade
@@Andoy12and British...
He's Bond before bond😂
Cary Grant always my favourite actor.
Funny you say that, because someone also made a similar comparison under one of my James Bond videos!
@@Gent.Z yes mate thats true.for me its Shame he never play James bond.can u imagine cary grant as James Bond?😁
But i also glad we got Sean Connery.
He was offered Bond after North by Northwest.

Glad to hear it, Mr Harry! You’re right, his style didn’t change too much with the seasons.

Cary Grant also had great taste in sunglasses.
Good point! I feel like I could have easily made this video three times longer 😅
You could do a video on the coolest wearers of sunglasses: Cary Grant, Steve McQueen, JFK, Anthony Bourdain, Pierce Brosnan, etc. @@Gent.Z
@@NigelTufnel612 that’s a good suggestion! Maybe when we get into the summer I can do this one. What are your personal favorite styles of sunglasses?
Vintage Bausch & Lomb, Persol, American Optical@@Gent.Z

He had replica suits made for rough and tumble scenes.
I’m 26 I wear suit every day when I go out the town
I love that! Good for you, we need more people like this

Good video, well organized and insightful
Thank you, sir!
Cary Grant's style was excellent!! However, he was a handsome man!! I think that anything that he wore would have looked fine!!
May I add, that Beckett Siminon has some great quality shoes. They are handmade and shipped to you. Very affordable as well.

As the legendary Hollywood style designer Edith Head said: "He is the best dressed human being on Earth" not referring to men or women.
10/10 for this video... Informative - Well explained - very well build up !.... Nice Job !! Congrats from Belgium !!!❤
Thank you Erik! I can't wait to share the next one with you, which will be about a very different type of movie star

There's even a scene in North by Northwest when he gets that grey suit pressed.
Really nice video !
Thank you!
I could listen to this guy Forever, although I prefer a different style approach.
A gray suit with a light blue tie, properly tailored, looks money for years (for example ). Less is more.

Thank you! I am not familiar with that brand but I’m going to check them out following your recommendation. Thank you!
Some starlet observed that she saw he had a botton sowed on his shirt that had cotton in a different colour from the rest of his buttons.
The CAD!
Just because you dress like him does not mean you will carry the clothes the same way as he did. Your body build may be different Etc
I tried to intimate his look at 1:58
There’s a lot to that look! I admire you. How did it go?
Next should be Alain Delon!
Funny you should say that…. ;)
List of style icons..i will mention another one Gary Cooper
Good suggestion, thank you!
My god you are a beautiful man!
