We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh, down to the river we'd ride

If the camera person who filmed this ever reads this, I salute you, iconic videography.
Right?! I still think he should have done “I’m on fire” though 😂
The steam is real, this is beautiful!
Piękna piosenka, utwory, które śpiewa to odzwierciedlenie wrażliwej duszy piosenkarza.
It the video I always look for. Simply the BEST.
Absolutely. True and captivating!!!❤
The line “now those memories come back to haunt me, to haunt me like a curse” always gives me hard goosebumps.
" is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worst"
The rest of the song too
Back when the album came out, I initially heard the line as “is a dream alive if it don’t come true,” which is actually pretty chilling too.
A four hour Springsteen gig flashes past in a heartbeat, and then stays with you forever.
Great
Three hours gig in Rome in 2016... concert of my life!
Saw him 6 times and only only only one of those times was less than 4 hours!. It's like going to a revival! So positive, so filled with love!!
Exactly how I felt.
Just short of four hours when I saw Bruce live in London; honestly felt like 30 minutes. Didn’t know time could pass so quickly.
Visual proof of how hard this man works on stage. No other like him.
Master piece!!the steam coming of his clothes..need not too say anymore
No other! ❤
Bruce commands the stage...❤
And one has to believe him, believe his feelings, words, emotions. ❤️
@@katarinakorzova2076 soprattutto le sue emozioni..sono visibili..😍😘💘❤️💕💕💕
One of the greatest songs ever written🙏🏼🙌🏼
Pour moi la chanson du BOSS !!!!!
Absolutely!!
@@erichannedouche7933 ciao Eric! Una delle piu belle canzoni di Bruce! 😍😘❤️💋
@Bruce Springsteen
I've been a fan for 24 years.
The verse "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?" always sends a shiver down my spine...It's eerily beautiful!
I had that tattooed on my arm. It's one of my favourite Springsteen lines.
shouldnt it be "doesn't come true" ?
@@saroman_valar No. It's as everyone has said it's "don't come true"
@@saroman_valar normally it would.....but it is `dont´ in the lyrics
that part always made me shiver as well......in a way very philosophical
The steam coming off Bruce is better than any production gimmick
A masterpiece. Confession: I come back and watch this a few times a month. Or when I just feel the need to be moved to tears by the words and music of perhaps the greatest American poet...Thank you, Bruce.
This is truly the most beautiful folk/rock song ever written
I was there on the front row at Glastonbury. I've seen Bruce perform The River 14 times, but this is the definitive version. Just stunning.
I was there great days
All versions are good, of course, it's The Boss, but I prefer The River Tour, Tempe 1980. The energy is incredible, as well Steven's backing vocals. Give it a listen.
i was there too 7 rows back and this was one of those defining moments in my life that burned into my soul!
The boss. Big Boss. The talent he has is unbelievable. His band is not far behind, just top class musicians. Mr. Bruce greetings from Brazil. We love you.
"Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse" ....probably my favorite Springsteen lyric of all time.
Same.
I noticed it last week watching a lyric video, he really has some gems in all his songs
Totally agree. So fundamental, and so universal. And such a reflection of the nature of our existence. The trick is realizing that dreams are dreams, and when they don't come true that is just the nature of life. Not a reflection on our character. Ok, done. The song rocks, as does The Boss!!
a fun from athens, greece since I was 17 years old
Best line ever.
A song that could be about any blue collar town, anywhere in the world. That's Bruce's gift: connecting people.
The 9 people that disliked this do not qualify to the human category. If you are not touched for this performance nothing can touch you anymore.
He was not only sweating but a bit out of breath. But who cares because that was just the most exceptional singing. Brilliant performance from the undoubted Boss. Absolute class.
Being on stage is exhausting..
The shots of the steam coming off Bruce when he is singing...be still my heart. ✌🏻❤️
Working hard, kicking a##, and taking names.
He's literally SMOKIN' HOT!
Thank you.
@@luzcarrero4789 Thank you.
And how long have you been a good fan of mine?
So sexy!!
the steam coming off Bruce .. my god he's actually on fire .. talk about putting everything into a show
I remember watching this performance streamed live... and when the director found that shot of the backlit steam rising off of Bruce's shoulders I was just like... "wow." What a moment! The whole set is a great performance - so much energy from these festival crowds.
Some of his European concerts are out of this world.
@@Caperhere Absolutely! Stockholm '88 is my all time favorite show 😁
Love u jogwheel, will Bruce Springsteen microwave? thanks for all the great content Jon. i really loved the movie review series.
jon is the best!
"Smoldering"
I have listened to this song hundreds of times but still don't get bored. Whoever the singer is, when I hear this song I will sing along. What an iconic song
It's Bruce Springsteen!
Are u for real...
This song is about the early married life of Bruce's sister Virginia (she's named Mary in the song) and her husband. Bruce dedicated his earliest public performances of The River to them.
"This is a song about my brother in law and my sister"
@Bruce Springsteen
Since The River album came out in 1980.
The body heat come off him backlit is fucking epic.
YESSSS!!! there is truly nothing better than Bruce when you need a pick-me-up! I honestly don't know where I would be without his music. The River is a masterpiece too, the song and the album. ❤️❤️
Yes, yes, yes. 🙌🏻
me too
Without him and his music I would definitely not be able to listen now. Thank you Bruce and ESB.
Whoever did the videography is phenomenal
He's a true blue straight shooter !.the best at his game
The BBC has still got it. Or at least, they did in 2009...
This performance will go down in History, truly Iconic, that shot with the spotlight behind The Boss and the steam rising WOW!
Because of that song I started to listen Bruce Springsteen.
When I die this song will be on my funeral.
Version on "Live 75-85" blew me away!
The first time when I attended his concert was Easter 1993. in Verona (IT) - 11 Apr, then 07. May 1997., Vienna (A) and so on, and so on...
This song never fails to impress me no matter how many times I hear it 😩😍
Pointgant
This version is really great comparing to others
Same here !!!!!
God bless the BBC for that camera angle and god bless Bruce.
Springsteen have gotten even better with age...just like fine wine. Gave me chill every single time listening to this piece of masterful art work, a symphony of music and emotion.
The harmonica in this song is one of the haunting things I've ever heard ! Just grabs you and pulls you in. Springsteen shows are EPIC ! I highly recommend it. It'll change your life !
Thanks for your love and support Are you one of my fans out there if yes you can call or message me on my talk tour number +15099035190 to know it's really me message me on Whatsapp for video call
We Miss you Brotha ! You come to Detroit, you call me ! I got your back !
@@springsteendisciple3543 thanks for your support I really appreciate I'll be waiting for you message on WhatsApp
@@springsteendisciple3543: Don't tell me you thought that guy was Bruce??? The real Bruce doesn't fart around like that and get up to such mischief (hell no)!!! And he would never randomly ask people to message him, and wouldn't bother his ass with Whatsapp either. This guy is not "Brotha" - just a "scammer". Way too many of that type all over the internet. Do hope you didn't ring the number he left - most prob some toxic scam-number that'll drain out your entire bank account. Have to be on your guard from those rattlesnakes.
IMO, this is Springsteen's masterpiece (it's a tough field!) and this performance is the best I've seen.
The gospel-like near-falsetto vocals pull you into the narrative, and the final harmonica solo breaks the heart.
When the sad day comes and TV stations are paying their respects to The Boss, this would be a suitable final clip to illustrate the genius of the man.
A beautiful song that tells a beautiful and true story - and I think it's Bruce's favorite one among his own songs... his sister's story.
Smoke on THE BOSS, very beautiful moment for one of the best song of the 20th century.
4:45 *That part is so beautiful that it gives me the chills! "The River" is a gem.*
Yes
The first gift I received from him- 2 tapes of this album set
so many can identify with this song...I think that is what makes it GREAT
A lot of the time when singers write and sing songs they just do it to make good music and make money. But here you can truly see that this song and it’s lyrics mean something to him like he experienced this happen to him or people he knows. That is true with most Springsteen songs where you can tell it truly means something to him.
life fails music heals
When music and lyrics have a meaning! Only a few musicians could write such powerful songs! This is a song for the Ages!
One of the greatest videos ever.
Perfect Birthday Present for my mum today:) She is a g fan!
There's Bruce and the E-Street Band, and then there's Bruce and the band LIVE. Watching and hearing this is too beautiful for my words.
It tells of loss and heartbreak. Breaks me up with it's intensity every time.
I think I will drop to my knees and cry the next time I see him in concert
We are all desperate to see him & the E Street band tour again, probably for the last time , hoping its soon 🤞
Right there with you.
Ja, vor allem nach dieser scheiss pandemie Zeit!
So ein toller Song!!
They uploaded it, FINALLY! 🙌 I hope they put up the whole Glastonbury show, it was amazing! 🤞🤞🤞
Pretty sure the entire Glatsonbury show has been available since the day it first streamed...
@Caroline C thanks 💋

The River my 1st record i ever bought of this amazing man. Will always bring back lovely memoties of my youth, before worry and stress. When i listen to this song and the whole slbum i am a ternager again. Thanks for posting
Didn’t realize Bruce could hit those high notes like he does towards the end and hold them with such control. I thought it was Steven or even Patti at first. A very powerful performance all the way through.
I saw Bruce ar Roundhay Park in Leeds in 1984 at his Born in the USA tour . It was boiling hot and I caught sunstroke . Me and my ex wife nearly missed the coach home!!🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲☮️🏴😁❤️🇸🇪🏴🇦🇺🎸
Wow...There's nothing like it, Bruce is the best of the best..I Love you ❤❤

@Bruce Springsteen I'm great boss ❤❤
@Bruce Springsteen I love all your music and your voice is something divine. I'm from São Paulo, Brazil. ❤❤
Am I the only one seeing smoke coming out of Him? He is on Fire 😉
Ever since I started hearing western songs, i have been hearing his songs. I am his age. All his songs are amazing. The lirics, the music, his way of delivery, the live performances, the team etc. 👍👍
« Now those memories come back to haunt me, they haut me like a curse » I always shiver when I hear these lyrics
Jesus Christus😊 ist mein Friede!
I was there ! About 10 people from the front :)
I'm envious Steve !
My life is summarized by this song,Thunder Road and The Wrestler.
This song and I'm on fire is 2 among the greatest pieces of music ever written.
Every concert is special, what a shot of steam rising from his back. That's why they call him The Boss xx
This must me magic to witness in person
How did I ever miss Janey Don't You Lose Heart? Its been so hard for me over the last few months. Been listening to this song almost every hour since last Thursday. Every time it's just like an injection of hope, energy, positive feelings. It's like having summer night inside me. Your songs are the so much-needed rescue. Thank you Thank you.
Good songs don't age.
So haunting......
Man, he was literally steaming. Great performance. Thanks for the upload.
Best Version ever.
The steam out of his body shows how hard he performs
Two weeks after this we saw him twice on consecutive nights in Dublin. Fantastic
The real national hymn of the states of America..

One of my fav Bruce songs, but credit to the video director and lighting to get the steam seeping off his back. That image is just stunning.
there is so much i despise about the US, but there is Bruce and so everything is ok in the end
The steam around him… this dude doesn’t need any special effects.
This song is so beautiful, it means so many different things to each one of us. Sad, yet so deep...... pure poetry!

Unreal
President Obama was right while giving the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Boss - these are not concerts, these are (indeed) communions.
Love and Respect ... from India.
@Bruce Springsteen You are welcome, sir! Yes, I am one of your millions of fans. We, like most of urban India, grew up listening to a lot of western music. But I did not listen to you and the E Street Band when I was young. In fact I have been rather old fashioned in my choices - starting with The Beatles, ABBA, Jim Reeves, Simon Garfunkel, Elton John, Eric Clapton and many others. We used to love American country music also when we were young - John Denver and Kenny Rogers mainly. Possibly because of the language and the accent, music used to appeal more than lyrics. But age and time changes a lot of things. Songs which are not just sweet love songs but which tell a story of life started to appeal. I was surprised at my own change! And then President Obama started his 8 year run in 2008 and I discovered you singing "This Land is Your Land" alongside Pete Seeger at the Lincoln Memorial. I heard Sting singing The Rising - and that was it! I searched out all your songs and you won't believe how many times I have relished the albums and live show renditions - especially Waitin' On A Sunny Day, Tougher Than The Rest & If I Should Fall Behind (with your wife Patti), Streets of Philadelphia, The River, My Hometown, Born to Run and The Rising. Though we are thousands of miles away and culturally very different, your and Patti's songs are a huge part of my existence. I wish all of you in the E Street Band the best of health and many many more decades of creation. Lots of love from India and God bless you.
@@SayanMukherjee2405: Ha ha, Don't tell me you thought that guy is Bruce??? The real Bruce wouldn't fart around like that, asking strangers to ring him, and wouldn't bother his ass with Whatsapp either. And you wasted all this time telling him all this stuff. This guy is not Springsteen (believe me) he is just a scammer (the internet is full of them). And you blessed him too.
Hope you don't ring that number he left, because it is most likely some scam number that will drain out your entire bank account. And hope I am not too late telling you this.
@@bigcityjunglecatenvisageth1422: If somebody masquerades for Bruce and knows how much I like the real Bruce and his music, I don't mind. If my blabber and chatter makes one extra person listen to Bruce's albums, my purpose is served. Similarly, blessing doesn't cost me - if you listen to The River, you are already blessed. :)
@@bigcityjunglecatenvisageth1422 : As for the phone number and my bank account, I don't have enough money to be robbed! :))) So, bless all of them. Just listen to Streets of Philadelphia and The Rising and feel good.
@@SayanMukherjee2405: Yes of course, but I was just trying to help you incase you were not aware this person was a scammer. They are working all over the internet and on phones too. These are very bad people - not honest like us. And this guy is definitely a fake - not who he says he is. Even if we don't have very much in our bank, we still do not want people getting in there and stealing the little we have. Take care.
