After thoroughly addressing the first dimension of Islam in his first four lectures of this series, Abdal Hakim uniquely explores the final two dimensions in Islam of iman and ihsan. This talk, which consists of two parts, is another highly intellectual discourse about a vast religious science. The speaker begins by providing a historical background in an effort to identify the processes that brought this science about. This lecture effectively paints a colorful picture of the nature of the spiritual life in Islam and examines its foundation. What does the Qur'an say about these two types of higher knowledges, imam and ihsan? How does the Muslim come to know God if He cannot be seen? And what about the early Islamic controversies of free will vs. predestination and the existence or "problem" of evil? How does Islam answer the age-old philosophical questions of why the world exists and what the purpose of life is? (Recorded at the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute seminar). Other topics discussed: Emanuel Kant, the 99 names of God, the film "Barakah", the volition of God to create the universe, heedlessness, thikr (meditation or contemplation), and the absence of symbols for God in Islam.
The disconnect between Shaykh Abdal's elucidation of the classical Islamic tradition and the stultifying muck we see from so-called salafists and wahhabis is astonishing. If this were presented on a large scale to the Western world, more people would turn to Islam than we could possibly imagine.
If it’s any consolation there is always going to be a disconnect between the ideal and the real in the realm of religious thought contra lived religious experience in the world. I experience this even as a Christian and it drives me nuts having to lower the bar to accomodate the dire state of things in the Church versus in the abstract world of theological study.
*Ya Allah, grant us the strength and protection to overcome difficulties. Alhamdulillah for the blessings of faith*
I have heard this talk more than once and every time I learn something new.
As a simple mystic, allied with no religion or philosophy, whose first love is Source/God, I find so much of deep beauty here. It's my first deeper look into Islam. Such depth! Such vision. Amazingly beautiful.
It's as if somehow you're closer to your inner being or soul - don't know your words. So wonderful, too, that you didn't get sidetracked by going completely into linear mind. There is life in this that is refreshing - clear connection to Source.
Glad I stopped by to take a look.

TheseEyesGod Listening again. I know what it is that sets this out for me from all other religious stuff I've encountered. It's that you're far more aware than most of the great wisdom of the Heart (by which I don't mean the chakra or the organ, but that of the divine within). Great, shining beauty, here.
Too bad we can't all live together in honor & peace - respecting each one's individual choices - those of every faith & of none. We're getting there, overall. I see & sense much more understanding, overall, even in many RUclips comment threads.
You may not agree, but my dream is for all among humanity to wrap arms of divine, unconditional Love & respect around one another - not seeking to change or convert one another, but rather to just live the experience of the divine love affair - between Source & the being/soul - trusting to the divine within each one to bring what is best about.
Deep Respect to you

+TheseEyesGod I have the perfect book for you! It's named "knowing yourself and god" by Al-ghazzali. You can order it from amazon. On another note, how has your spiritual journey been thus far? have you researched into Islam more?
+"So where are you going?" (chapter 81 verse 26) - Thanks for sharing. These physical eyes aren't so good for reading these days, so I looked for a PDF or some sort of electronic version (so I could magnify the text to suit). Didn't find anything - but I did find that it's a highly respected text. May find a way to read it one day.
Have pondered how to sum up my "spiritual journey," but don't find the words to contain that. Can say it's very active, productive - like going thru many "deaths," as older selfs who I thought I was drop away - always new. I find things to be accelerating at an ever increasing pace - for those of us actively journeying. Confusion/chaos seems to be increasing among those more wedded to mind & 3D.
All is ever well, tho - can't be otherwise, once one finds one's way more deeply within. Hope things are well with you, too. As for Islam, my "research" consists of the Arise My India vids, to which I'm subbed.

Such kind words, reflecting a kind soul! May The Creator grant you success in every avenue of life.
You still here.
Alhamdulilah for the Quran.
Very indepth and extremely well prepared lecture. A person like me needs to rather must listen to it more than once to get some benefit out of it.
excellent lecture, and the topic touches on the truth. Please continue doing lectures to help us understand
I don't know how to describe this lecture but I would say my heart on my mind was on a banquet this lecture I was truly taken by the hand and I was given an insight from a very beautiful unique perspective. Love to the story in the end about it teacher who asked students to pick up flowers. Students go out and bring all kinds of different flowers and one student brings a dead flower and his explanation will be in the lecture so listen Thank you for uploading May Allah reward It's blessed The teacher with a long healthy life 🙏❤️ Amin.
I share the same feelings. Not exactly describable. He is telling us of God after all.
It would be great if all the sources and books are sourced in the description so we could go deeper in these arguments for our own pleasure and benefit.
i dont think this is the purpose though...
Assalam Aleikoem,
Iblis was not an Angel, he was a Djinn sitting among the Angles.
Besides that, amazing lecture.
source?
@@faisalhakim5920 The Qur'an.
@@faisalhakim5920 and the Hadiths and scholarly traditions. Even many early Islamic scholars did believe iblis was an angel at first, but it seems they go that from Jewish/Christian sources
@@MAbdusson 5 year reply. Good going!
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. 18:50.
thank you sir for replying on my post . may Allah reward you for uploading this wonderful and very useful lectures.thank you indeed.god bless you.
really thank you for replying on my post .may Allah reward you for uploading these wonderful lectures.may Allah bless you.
Fantastic. Very clear and concise, thank you
very fine lecture, thank you very much for sharing it with us
The exception in the ayah “Fe sajadu illa Iblis= They all prostrated except Iblis”, is not continuous but separated. In the separated/ discrete exception, the exception is not from the kind of the one it was excepted from. E.g, in the sentence “Jaal qawmu illa baqarah= the entire of the community came except a cow”, the word cow is exceptional from the community but is not from their kind. So, from that verse, -in terms of grammar- there is no obligation to say that satan is from the angels.
May Allah bless you..wonderful indeed.
The thumbnail would be perfect if it had a cup of british tea and a kettle on the table
Jazakallah khair! May Allah bless him.
Peace upon you. Thank you for sharing this lecture which I found insightful.
Just a small comment: The film 'Baraka' was a documentary film directed by Ron Fricke and not Coppola.
I really enjoyed this maaa-shaa-Allah
Yes but Mr Murad's use of the word was in context of the meaning, ie, Fallen Angels = Jinns. Jinn is not an english word. I know that the christian interpretation is very confusing but Mr Murad is not wrong. Just saying.
@5:01
Satan was a Jinn, Not an Angel.
An Angel does that what Allah the Almighty says to him. A Jinn can do what he wants! So Please Satan was not a Angel, he was a Jinn!!!!

'Angel' here @4:50 meaning, that this jinn, Iblis was once angel-like, as he was so devout in worship. See Quran 2,34 and 18,50.
seekershub.org/ans-blog/2015/02/04/is-iblis-really-from-the-jinn-why-is-iblis-blaming-allah-for-leading-him-astray/
Iblis was the teacher of The angels but he had fallen when resisted the order of neeling down in front of Adam. Well I am sure Abdal Hakim's tongue just slipped.
Tolstoy, so close to Islam in many respects, wrote: "Life is a dream; death is wakening".
Such a thing as Christian marriage never was and never could be. Christ did not marry, nor did he establish marriage; neither did his disciples marry. But if Christian marriage cannot exist, there is such a thing as a Christian view of marriage. And this is how it may be formulated: A Christian (and by this term I understand not those who call themselves Christians merely because they were baptized and still receive the sacrament once a year, but those whose lives are shaped and regulated by the teachings of Christ), I say, cannot view the marriage relation otherwise than as a deviation from the doctrine of Christ,-as a sin. This is clearly laid down in Matt. v. 28, and the ceremony called Christian marriage does not alter its character one jot. A Christian will never, therefore, desire marriage, but will always avoid it.
thats Tolstoy
The Quran Contradicts Itself
Quran Sura 2:29 & Quran 41:9-11 says the earth was created first, then heaven.
Quran 79:27-30 says heaven was created first, then allah went to finish earth.
It cannot decide if earth was created first or heaven. To make matters worse, the consensus of Muslims is that the earth that was created first, which is materialism. It is like saying a virtual reality is created first.
Excellent lecture
there is only one right way of Islam and its practices...If we find our selves connected to our egoes and parties more then connecting to our prophet and his beautiful lifestyle, then we should probe into the matter and ourselves if we really want to make Allah happy and what path takes us to Allah's happiness.
Yes, and Islam is the straight path.
Yes we need to follow the sunnah teaching of prophet Mohammad (pbuh), Quran and hadith
same for the Muslims following the Hanafi Fiqh as well
But what's the Ashari solution to the 3 brothers story? I notice that every time that story is brought up, Asharis put down the Mutazila thought without actually explaining the solution to the problem...
Cha the problem doesn't need a solution because it's only purpose was to illustrate the weaknesses in the Mu'tazilite philosophy. If we have to explain why God made one brother live a life of sin that led him to hell, this is like us asking why God made hell and sin in the first place. Part of the answer lies in how God wants to test us. So for example he allows Iblis (Satan) "free will" knowing that Iblis will sin, and that this will lead him to hell. So if that wasn't good for Iblis why did God create him in the first place? Well we know how Iblis is actually a big part of the test of this life, in that we must defeat his attempts to seduce us to sin. If that is part of his purpose then should God punish him? If God was fair and just with him, giving him a fair chance to repent and do right for himself then it surely won't be God that oppresses him, but Iblis that puts himself in hell by his own oppression. And in any case his existence although leads to punishment for him, leads to blessings and rewards of paradise for others who strove to overcome him.
Think about it, why have cruel tyrants on earth? What would Moses have been without having to overcome Pharaoh? In causing suffering to others there was ironically some long term benefit in Pharaoh's tyranny in that it made heroes out of those that were patient and sought God's help and support to oppose him.
Hope that helps answer your question. And Allah knows best.
@saraheeeeeee90 Summer of 1997.
what about music? is it allowed in islam?
when exactly was these lectures given?
"@saraheeeeeee90 Summer of 1997."
Actually Qur'an chapter 2 states that Iblis is from the Jinn.
Yep that was a mistake
so Angels were made of light and Jinns were made of fire.this is according to Islam
Correction for anyone watching in 2023…. But there was no fallen Angel in Islam, it was a Jinn (the devil) that disobeyed bowing to Adam
What is the Islamic teaching on God's sovereignty and predestination?
where dose he talk about some of the stuff that was already on the board at the beggining, written in black pen?
Just sat up for a while watching this. I feel even closer to alpha now
Azazil is actually present in the bible as well. Look it up.
@cuhullan89 : Brother, he (Iblis) was elevated to a great status because of his piety and enjoyed the company of angles but he was a Djinn. Angles are made of light and Djinn or of smokeless fire. When he refused to prostrate, he said that he is created from fire. Similarly, Allah say that He created Humans out of Clay and other place out a sperm drop. "Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] sperm-drop - then at once he is a clear adversary?" 36:77. Continues in part two.
5:48 "You can't really use Reason to determine Ultimate Truth"
-Abdal Hakim Murad, 2011
He's right. What do you think?
@@Ag____20000 well it's why we need revelation.
Assalamulaikum
These are not his own words, rather it is a view held by the ulama that he is quoting
And this lecture although posted in 2011, was not actually delivered in that year. Its from 1997 as told in the comment by the channel.
People knew it since early greeks. If there is an ultimate truth, it is outside sense perceptions and logic. Just ignorant imbeciles don't read enough to realize it.
Al-Baqara 34- "And when We said to the angels: Prostrate yourselves before Adam! So they prostrated themselves, all but Iblis (Satan). He refused, and became one of the infidels."
That seems pretty clear. He was an Angel.
@SuperKas111 I agree with you, but some scholars had discussions over whether jinn were "fallen angels" like some of the ahlul kitab mentioned, difference of agreement, not a particularly important one, but thats what he was refering to.
Its Allah swt nature to be all knowing so Allah knows how it will all conclude. But people do not know the future , that is free will the abscence of knowledge of the future. Purpose of life is for people to come to know themselves , because if you punish a child for something he will do in the future he will surely say but maybe i will not do that. Allah swt has given life for you to see who you are, and then there is no escape from that realisation.
Yes free will does mean absence of knowledge of the future. However that is not all free will is. You have the same free will as Allah. Allah breathed his ruh into you, as explained at 54:00. So you do have true free will. It's just that Allah knows all outcomes. Allah is infinite.
You are very right about Allah is has given you life to realize who you are. To discover your true self, basically to achieve enlightenment.
Yes, that's what I was told too in my younger years.
Then why does it clearly say he refused when the angels were told. It doesn't make sense. Was he just hanging around with the angels? Perhaps it is English translation that makes it confusing. Maybe when I learn to read it in Arabic it will make more sense:) Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Deep!
❤
thank you for replying .God bless you
Prof HAKIM is a good teacher
Allah (SWT) Created Shaitan from smokeless fire and it is not an angel ; whereas angels are created from noble light - Noor..... 💐
what is the brother's Name?
Abdul Hakim Murad
no in arabic we can say all mens came to dinner all but a women. so you can understand both explication in this sentens.anyway just after Iblis say you created me from fire (and angel are created from light not fire )anyway tha majority of muslim scholars sayed that iblis was a king of jens and he was against that human being as khalifa in this earth and not him.to understand angel is like programme can do anything that allah ask him to do they don't have the freedom as human or jins or animals.
During Clinton admin time. I got that from session 1.
thank you for replying on me.god bless you.
Read more of chapter 2, it says quite clearly that Iblis was not an angel but was from the Jinn.
Bruh the audience is English non Muslims i believe.they have no concept of jins thats why maybe he used the word Fallen Angel.
Also You think abdul hakim won't know such minor detail?
I dont know why i'm writing this here.
I love god so much. I can feel his existence. But i am so scared if am not in the right way.
I am so confused and scared. Dont even know if this is a true feeling or not since i have anxiety.
I wish i can see the real and true way and follow it me and my family..
I care about my afterlife.
I know that "maybe" i don't deserve guidance... I am not totally a good person. But i know that the mercy of god is greater than anything..
God please forgive me .. and guide me to your true way..
There is alot of ways. But i believe that there is only one way which is the true one..
Islam is the true way
Jazakulumulah good lecture
Can someone give me that handout he was talking about ?
Email me at temporaryemail1234@aol.com and I can send it to you
You should capitalize when writing Allah.
I would to hear Timothy give a talk about that time long ago when Man invented Allah and also those times when Man imagined thousands of other Gods and their creation myths. ?
Humans are born with the innate disposition to believe in a higher power.
People are Deists by default unless guided further by truth or lies. God is a necessary existence which can be proven by the contingency argument, which is still unrefuted. The Islamic definition of God is exactly that. The true religion is monotheism, and Islam fits all the criteria of a perfect system. Human beings are imperfect and will make mistakes. God doesn't

@al natla, By suggesting that "blondes" or whites have nothing in common with Islam or Arabic names, you just exposed your ignorance. Islam means submission to God & people of any race or ethnicity can submit to God. There are Arabs who are Christians & others of the Jewish faith!
iblis is not a djinn either, but both of them are fire creatures..salam
Thanks ;)

even christian used mysticism greek orthodox
no i guess after judgement between animals all of them will be part of earth and then bad people will say ohh god if also we can as earth ...
Next time before replying, try coming in with a better comprehension of what has been said. I am well aware what a Jinn is according to Islamic interpretation. The Judeo-Christian understanding of these entities termed them as demons/fallen angel. That's what Abdal Hakim mentioned. No one is claiming that Jinns are fallen angel in it's literal term. It's semantics.
Tawbah- to return, turning back.. .. out of the cave in Plato's Allegory?
Iblis was not an angel he was from jin
The Q'uran says in many Sura Allah gave land of Israel to children of Israel as well as many kind things about the Jews....why is this ignored ?
"And Allah created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop; then He made you mates. And no female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register. Indeed, that for Allah is easy." 35:11. For example, if I say for tea you need water and at other place I say milk and at other place I say you need sugar and so on. It is additional information and not contradictions. Allah knows best.
Muslim Theology and Islamic Mysticism - Part 1 of 2 (Understanding Islam Series: Session 5)"
Islam is only a destructive philosophy/ political Laws!
Asrat Mengesha
???
No more destructive than any philosophy that or belief that requires you to suspend free will (all religions)
it's too bad that people must look to a book to ultimately understand themselves or some outside creature like a god.
Its not about understanding yourself :), it's about developing yourself.
Abdalla Ahmed Mahmoud but don't you think that in order to develop yourself you must understand yourself? I read once that our deepest desires help us to understand God and ourselves.
Afcourse you have to understand yourself, but you are never one thing, everyday you learn something new, and thus everyday hopefully you are changing. but when I sent that message I'm talking about the Quran though, literaly one of the things that it does is teach human beings how to be Human, to show love, compassion, and forgivness to all people.
one of my favourite Sayings of the prophet is this;
"None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.", brother here being human brother.
Abdalla Ahmed Mahmoud that's a very good saying! It reminds me of the Jewish saying that what is hateful to you do not do unto others. Or the Christian Golden Rule. There are many similar thoughts and sentiments that run through Islam that echo the other two Great monotheisms.
Wrong quotation from Quran please. Azazeal was not rejected for using the mind but he was rejected after a knowledge test was put before two sides angels and Adam. Adam passed it with distinction but angels expressed their limited role of being less informed. So they were ordered to bow to Adam who was more knowledgeable. That was refused by Azazeal who referred to his creation better than Adam. So in banishing Azazeal what Allah reflected was that superiority belonged to knowledge not the material of creation. And that has proven correct airways.
Please don't impose on Islam your limited and half cooked knowledge of Islam. If you are an analyst be objective and observant not subjective and judgemental.
@cuhullan89: Well you have to read Quran in entirety to understand the nature of Satan. When the Satan said that 'You have created me out of fire' it proves that he was not an angle because they are created from light and dzinn are out of fire. "And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire". Chapter 55:15.
"Satan was an Angel?"...he never was an angle.... Sorry i stoped watching this video as soon as i heard him say that.
Bruh the audience is English non Muslims i believe.they have no concept of jins thats why maybe he used the word Fallen Angel.
Also You think abdul hakim won't know such minor detail?
Also please dont be so judgemental. This lecture is full of wisdom.
